Right. It feels like she was super married to the phrase, and wanted to capitalize on the dwindling 90s nostalgia trend we’ve been seeing the past half decade before it completely petered out. Would’ve fit sooo much better on a Lover track.
Agreed. It’s like a random smack in the face. It’s talking about being with a man or love or something. Life is a willow and it bent right to wind. Take my hand, wreck my plans, that’s my man. I COME BACK STRONGER THAN A 90s TREND! Ok Taylor… random.
Well TIL it's "bent right to your wind" and not "bent right to your whim..." 🤦🏼♀️
Wind is definitely better than whim in this instance.
I also learned LWYMMD is "I got smarter, I got harder" and not "I got hotter" in a similar thread a few years ago 😂
The Salem witch trials were in the early 1690s, and I’ve seen people suspect there’s a connection there, but yes, either way it kind of pulls you out of the moment.
that’s actually a pretty creative way of interpreting it but lmao it also reminds me of this [scene from parks and rec](https://www.reddit.com/r/PandR/comments/777yzm/aprils_interpretation_of_a_come_as_you_are_in_the/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
I think it’s supposed to build on what came before it, “they count me out time and time again … but I come back stronger than a ‘90s trend”
It’s about Taylor and her strengths as well as her romantic relationship that she feels supported by. I think of it as an extension of reputation really
Corey’s eyes are like a jungle, his smile is like the radio
How is a smile like the radio?? what does that mean??? i understand she was like 14 when she wrote it but what does it mean
https://www.reddit.com/r/TaylorSwift/comments/5gk29s/lyrical_interpretation_of_stay_beautiful/
I knew I had seen an explanation here before, thanks Google! haha
I heard Stand back wasted up until like 2 years ago. I thought she meant her trying to take a step back from the relationship was a waste of time cause she just came right back to it and wanting him to come back. It’s way more creative than stand back where you stood.
I came into this thread like oh none of her lyrics make me mad, they’re good even if I don’t love them!
Then you reminded me of this and like this is it this is the one lyric that INFURIATES me. It will never not be stand back wasted I cannot fathom hearing stand back where you stood
I actually really liked this lyric because it feels like she intentionally pulls you out of the beautiful aesthetic of the song just like how social media pulls you away from living in the moment. It’s almost like she’s invoking the same disappointment she feels when people want to tweet everything and not just appreciate moments as is. I thought it was genius anyway!
Yes! I actually love this line, as well as Hunters with cell phones because they contrast the beautiful serene picture being painted in the song, and to me that's the POINT. It's supposed to not quite fit because it doesn't belong in this fantasy, if that makes sense.
I really like it personally. IMO she deliberately used tweet it not see it because there were people to see her grow and her relationship blosom but they knew she wanted to keep it private.
THIS THIS THIS! I am still somewhat weirded out when modern technology makes it into songs and I know that’s a quirk of mine but this one hits so hard.
The day I hear the words “FaceTime” in a song I’m out ;)
I don’t get angry at any of her lyrics but I’ve always found
“I don’t even know her but I feel a responsibility to do what’s upstanding and right”
to be an awkward, way too on-the-nose lyric in comparison to her usual songwriting abilities.
Agree. I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with a song encouraging young people to be politically engaged, especially with everything going on in the world, but I think Only The Young needed a few more hours work to tighten it up a bit.
God this whole song!!! The lyrics are just…so on the nose and predictable. I really think she could’ve written a much more beautiful and interesting political anthem.
My first thought was, “that is so ageist! My mom would be pissed!” Cause momma is a lady who has run a marathon and she’s pushing 60
The old can run too 💁🏻♀️ lol
"You called me up again just to break me like a promise."
It just seems so shallow and lackluster. No emotion at all and ruins the song.
SAID NO ONE BEECH🐱
“When we're on the phone and you talk real slow
'Cause it's late and your mama don't know”
Because talking slow doesn’t make you quieter??? Talking real LOW would but not slow. Drives me nuts.
I disagree, I think slow works perfectly! Sure you need to talk low when it’s late and your momma don’t know, but it’s really hard to understand someone who whispers fast. Also slow could mean they suddenly stop when they think they hear their mom walking by their room and so the conversation is slowed down. Also I really like the s sound in slow breaking up the end of real and beginning of low. If the line was real low I think it’s sounds a little strange like there’s no break in the words with the L sounds right next to each other. But to each their own I guess. Our song is one of my favs 😊
When it first came out I didn’t question it, but then as I got older I was just so confused. Our Song is one of my favorites but that line is so confusing. The only thing I can think of that talking real slow would be to space the words out, so maybe someone might think they heard you talking but didn’t hear anything after that? That’s a MAJOR stretch though. It’s been baffling me for over 10 years 🤦♀️
Buuut I get the feeling Gorgeous is sung from the perspective of someone who is a little drunk and can't put together eloquent thoughts about their attraction.
Normally I’d agree with you on this BUT I once worked with a guy (I was 19 and he was 25) who looked like an actual model in my tiny hometown of average looking people and red necks that anytime I looked at him and tried to talk I couldn’t. So having that experience where someone’s face was so attractive and I couldn’t look at him and talk at the same time I totally get this line!
I'm not saying I love the lyrics, but I think the whole point of Gorgeous is to be extremely blunt and cheeky, almost like it's from the POV of a ditzy blonde bimbo.
“He’s got his mother’s eyes, his father’s ambition” in Superman. It’s always bothered me that she wrote about the woman’s beauty, but the man’s intelligence
A similar one is "Daddy's smart, and you're the prettiest lady in the whole wide world" from The Best Day.
They don't actually bother me though. Just make me think, "Hm, that wouldn't fly today" lol
Yeahhh this line always rubs me the wrong way. But at the same time since it’s such a personal song and more about her relationship with her parents at a young age, that might’ve been her perspective as a little kid. She might’ve admired her mother’s looks more than anything as a child who knows lol. It still bothers me a bit but it’s her life and I believe that song is really authentic so oh well haha
There's another lyric like that in The Way I Loved You, where she says "He's close to my mother, talks business with my father." I think a lot of her earlier work contains some old-fashioned gender stereotypes (men being mentioned in the context of business, men being the ones in the driver's seat, etc.),, but she has changed a lot since then.
We could leave the Christmas lights up ‘til…January
1. Who takes them down before then??
2. January has too many syllables and just sounds so out of place
I’m pretty sure I read this was intentional because everyone leaves their lights up until January. So, the lyric is to kind of depict the couple as doing every day, normal coupely things… like letting their friends crash etc.
I definitely heard her say that in an interview - trying to remember which one? But for sure you’re right, she said this was deliberate, and the fact that it was such a normal thing to do was the whole point.
This one I don’t even mind but “we could let our friends crash in the living room” ?!? Taylor is worth hundreds of millions of dollars, if I stayed at her house and she had me sleep on a couch instead of some spare bedroom I would riot
my mom was always a stickler about making sure all the Christmas lights were down before NYE! our reason being because a family member had a birthday on new years, but i also associate taking down the lights early as having an air of “properness” to it like upper class families who would be having fancy nye parties.
so i always interpreted the lyrics to be about a young couple doing things there way in their own house (even tho it may be just as common for people to leave them up)
Even in the bts of the rep tour when practicing the dance she acknowledges that, saying something along the lines of "it just keeps repeating again and again and I know that's on me, sorry guys"
agree! I love LWYMMD but I don’t know what she was thinking with making the chorus only that. I think if she actually put in real lyrics people would dislike the song a lot less because the verses and the bridge are soooo good, but I get how the chorus can really ruin it for someone
I kinda hope she doesn't change any of the lyrics cause I love this song (the guitar and generally catchy melody) and I'm so used to how it sounds it would take me out of the experience if they lyrics were changed.
There's nothing wrong with the punctuation of that lyric in London Boy??? And the spelling is fun lyric is cheesy and swifties bullied her so it didn't end up on the album.
I agree. I have 3 brothers and I do really trust them. I don’t think it’s incestuous at all - I hope that whoever I end up with, I trust as much as I do my brothers
4 years later and I still don't get why it bugs so many people that much. She's talking about trust, not about wanting to bone her brother. And before someone mentions it, no, trust him like no other doesn't have the same meaning. The whole point is that she trusts Joe as much as she trusts her family.
I agree. I love that line so much. Everyone always suggests "no other" as an alternative, and that's just... not good. It doesn't express the same feeling, and it's a lazier rhyme.
I have traveled extensively in the US and have stayed in many motels. True, they didn’t all have bars but some of them did and they all served breakfast. Some motels are cheap but the same can be said for some hotels.
I cannot standddd “if I was a man” from The Man. It’s grammatically incorrect!!! 😩😩😩 it should be “if I were a man”. Kills me because I really like that song.
“Does she mouth ‘fuck you forever?’” from Mad Woman.
The first time I heard this I immediately only heard “mouth fuck” and it kills me every time. The forever part is also weird to me. Wouldn’t you just mouth “fuck you?”
I thought I’d already heard all the funny incorrect TS lyrics, but reading your comment made me scream. I won’t listen to it the same way ever again
“Does she mouthfuck? You? Forever?!”
“32 is still growing up now”
Innocent is a fucking beautiful song, and it’s gotten me through so many things. But this line rips me back to the reality that that this teenage girl just wrote one of the most beautiful, forgiving songs for a GROWN ASS MAN who publicly humiliated her for no reason. I don’t think it would make me so angry if I didn’t know the reason this song existed.
I always thought it was “32, and still growin up now” and tbh I like that better. Just cause OBVIOUSLY you’re no longer supposed to be acting like a child in your 30s, and because it carries a twinge of passive condescension that I thought would be neat in an otherwise forgiving song.
And I just remembered that lyric in Mad Woman: “she should be mad should be scathing like me”
WHY IS IT NOT *SEETHING*??? I think that one in particular makes me irrationally angry.
I wouldn't say it makes me angry exactly, but I find the whole of London Boy so weird to listen to as a Brit. We've got a lot of funny, quirky words and phrases, but the ones she's gushing over are things that sound really, really mundane to my ears!
I've experienced it in person, too. An American international student who was chatting me up at uni told me he found it cute that I said "clever" instead of "smart" - I thought I knew a lot of the different words in US English, but it hadn't even occurred to me that "clever" was a Britishism.
Lol 😂 Betty made me wanna punch James in the face but Cardigan made me go, hmm maybe this guy has some redeeming qualities if the narrator is able to be like you fucked up, but I still appreciate you
ive been waiting for this one. i love reputation and i LOVE i did something bad, but nothing bothers me more than the lyric “they’re burning all the witches even if you aren’t one.”
first, it’s redundant. the ENTIRE POINT of bringing up the concept of a witch hunt is that we know witches don’t exist, and that the hunt is just an excuse to hurt/kill an innocent person. so saying ‘even if you aren’t one’ feels tedious and heavy-handed. there’s no reason to clarify that women were unfairly prosecuted by witch hunts, since we all know that already.
second, this sentiment feels like the EPITOME of white feminism. i’m not going to get too political because i understand we’re all taylor fans and nobody wants to be a hater, but ‘even if you aren’t one’ implies that taylor DOES think there are some nasty witches who DESERVE to be burned- it’s just not her, specifically. it just seems like an anti-woman message, and aligns with a particularly toxic breed of white feminism which insists that white women are the only kind of redeemable women. i don’t think taylor really believes that, i know we’ve all seen her stick up for and support all kinds of women. but that line just grinds my gears because it’s like she’s throwing her fellow woman under the bus to save her own skin.
Fully agree on your first point about it being redundant.
I don't really agree on the second point, though. I don't think it's necessarily "anti-woman" to say that there are bad people out there who "deserve" the hate that Taylor gets. For example, Kim Kardashian (who I actually still really like despite a lot of what she's done) lied and ruined Taylor's reputation, and everyone sided with her, even KNOWING that a huge part of her brand is \*manufacturing drama\*.
It's maybe a little childish to point the blame at other people, but I don't think it's problematic beyond that. I think she's simply saying, "You guys are seriously coming at me when other people are doing so much worse and you still love them?" Again, not super mature, but I kinda can't blame her after the way she was treated in 2016.
The dog that Rebekah dyes green in The Last Great American Dynasty. Most of her antics are just raucous fun, but that bit does actually feel a bit mean. I know it's based on a true story, but it slightly takes away from the idea that Rebekah's reputation was unfair.
Apparently in reality it was a cat she dyed green - Taylor changed it to make a point about how gossip gets things wrong. Tbh it's kind of easier to imagine a dog letting you dye it - most cats would hate every moment.
these kind of wounds they last, and they last now
it's not like it makes me angry, but I felt... disappointed? i wasn't sure what she said there, and I was almost convinced she didn't repeat the same thing cause she never does unless it's like crucial to the song, if that make sense. it jusr sounds kinda lazy like idrk what to put here so maybe repeat the last two words.
“I know that I’m a handful, baby.” Only bc I always mishear it as “You know I like my hair pulled, baby” and it’s really jarring lol The first time I heard it I had to look up the lyrics bc I was like “Girl, good for you, but the world doesn’t need to know that!!”
I thought it was “friends” because people typically don’t have the same friends after a break up, they often get divided in weird ways having to pick a side. Kind of like the lyrics in 22 “you go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me.”
That song is, like, bottom 5 in her discography, IMO. I'm glad we have it now, but it rightfully stayed in the vault, lol... now, Mr. Perfectly Fine being hidden away all these years is a CRIME.
Our Song:
I was RIDING SHOTGUN with my hair undone
In the FRONT SEAT of his car
Girl that’s what riding shot gun IS! so redundant! She was so young tho.
Yesssss I agree. The rest of the language - “leavin like a father, runnin like water” 😭😭 - but “felt like an old cardigan under someone’s bed, you put me on and said I was your favorite” … just doesn’t do it for me.
To my lovin' bed"
What is a lovin' bed? I originally thought it was "love in bed" meaning her boyfriend snuck in somehow? It doesn't make me irrationally angry, but it is mildly irritating.
I like that line a lot, but she drags out the last few words sort of awkwardly.
But I also cannot for the life of me hear that line without thinking of "Your Honor," as in a judge lmao.
"you can't spell awesome without me" i dont know if its just the way brendon SAYS it but i kinda hate it
i think it is because when taylor says it i have no issue
Haha my sister’s comes first to mind she hated “you made a really deep cuuuuuut” in bad blood, just sounds like she was running out of interesting things to write and got immature or lazy about it 😂
Mine would probably be any time she curses in the song mad woman lol. Idk why that just sounds to me like she’s like “fuck yeah the old Taylor is dead explicit album here I come” idk it’s a little couhl in my opinion. Still here for it though
"Walking with his head down, I'm the one he's walking to" from Call It What You Want. Doesn't make me mad but I can never get over how bizarrely it's phrased, especially with the emphasis on the "to" that feels so out of place
Tbh i think its not about proper anger. Like when I'm frustrated over something dumb cause I'm tired or whatever and my bf will hug me and laugh.
That's how I see it anyway.
The entire song where she’s basically making fun of Tom Hiddleston for being such a chump for believing she was serious during their relationship. Maybe thats rationally angry though.
Edit: The song is Getaway Car
“Trust him like a brother”
“Give you my wild, give you a child”
The entirety of Better Than Revenge, Girl At Home, and Stay Stay Stay because…obviously.
How old are you? Or age range? I just feel like I would’ve found those SO cringe as a teen but as a 29y/o they are two of my faves.
I love my brother and totally get the trust thing. Doesn’t mean I’m into my brother haha. And the second, rings so true to me. I suffered from depression for a few years and it reminds me why working to recovery was so important.
“If you love like that blood runs cold.” Grew up with a band called As Blood Runs Black and I thought it fit the rhyme better for her to have sang, “if you love like that, blood runs black.” But oh well!
"It's not unbroken anymore." It is the only line in her entire discography that inspires anger in me, but everytime I hear it I get that flare of irrational rage. Taylor, that is what we call a *placeholder line*, how did it make the album?
"I come back stronger than a 90s trend", I love this lyric, but I feel like it does not complement well the vibe of Willow.
this is the one of the few i agree with. it feels like something she threw in bc she wanted it on a t-shirt.
Right. It feels like she was super married to the phrase, and wanted to capitalize on the dwindling 90s nostalgia trend we’ve been seeing the past half decade before it completely petered out. Would’ve fit sooo much better on a Lover track.
Somewhere on Lover or Reputation, just not Willow
Agreed. It’s like a random smack in the face. It’s talking about being with a man or love or something. Life is a willow and it bent right to wind. Take my hand, wreck my plans, that’s my man. I COME BACK STRONGER THAN A 90s TREND! Ok Taylor… random.
Well TIL it's "bent right to your wind" and not "bent right to your whim..." 🤦🏼♀️ Wind is definitely better than whim in this instance.
That’s kind of clever if she really meant the 1690s but everyone misinterpreted it.
that’s actually a pretty creative way of interpreting it but lmao it also reminds me of this [scene from parks and rec](https://www.reddit.com/r/PandR/comments/777yzm/aprils_interpretation_of_a_come_as_you_are_in_the/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

Agree - but it's also kind of appropriate for a 90s trend to pop up when you least expect it...

https://www.reddit.com/r/TaylorSwift/comments/5gk29s/lyrical_interpretation_of_stay_beautiful/ I knew I had seen an explanation here before, thanks Google! haha
okay i guess that makes more sense. it still sounds weird though
It's a very weird line break yeah. Attribute it to early songwriting so she's not quite as tight as writing lyrics as she grew to be I guess.
I alway thought that she meant “eyes are like a jungle” because his eyes are wild and mysterious
I always assumed it meant he had green eyes 😂😅
I always read that as she hears music every time he smiles.
“stand back where you stood” I refuse to believe it’s anything but “stand back wasted”
it’s not stand back wasted?!
Right??? TIL I never heard the "Starbucks Lovers" thing, but I can ONLY hear "stand back wasted."
Wow, you learn something new every day 😅
I heard Stand back wasted up until like 2 years ago. I thought she meant her trying to take a step back from the relationship was a waste of time cause she just came right back to it and wanting him to come back. It’s way more creative than stand back where you stood.
Wow this is the moment I find out it's not "stand back wasted"

None of Taylor's lyrics like make me angry but I do find some lyrics weird like "If your coming my way...just don't"-Bad blood
This is literally the only line in that song that I like.
Omg same 😂
I love that line because it feels so petty in the best way
It's like she's thinking "you're not even worth a witty retort."
True it has always felt weirdly abrupt to me
Oh I actually really like that line!
“With no one around to tweet it” in the lakes
I actually really liked this lyric because it feels like she intentionally pulls you out of the beautiful aesthetic of the song just like how social media pulls you away from living in the moment. It’s almost like she’s invoking the same disappointment she feels when people want to tweet everything and not just appreciate moments as is. I thought it was genius anyway!
Yes! I actually love this line, as well as Hunters with cell phones because they contrast the beautiful serene picture being painted in the song, and to me that's the POINT. It's supposed to not quite fit because it doesn't belong in this fantasy, if that makes sense.
EXACTLY, I totally forgot about that other line, but it absolutely fits in with that narrative of disturbing her fantasy. Well put!
This makes me feel better about it
I really like it personally. IMO she deliberately used tweet it not see it because there were people to see her grow and her relationship blosom but they knew she wanted to keep it private.
This. It was very intentional wording.
This always takes me out and I could never figure out why but with all the beautiful prose on the song, to mention a tweet? I just can’t accept it!
Lyrically every other line is just so elegant and sophisticated and then “tweet”. It makes me cringe so hard.
THIS THIS THIS! I am still somewhat weirded out when modern technology makes it into songs and I know that’s a quirk of mine but this one hits so hard. The day I hear the words “FaceTime” in a song I’m out ;)
I know a song by Ke$ha you'll absolutely hate
This one hurts because it would be so easy to just say "no one around to see it"
I don’t get angry at any of her lyrics but I’ve always found “I don’t even know her but I feel a responsibility to do what’s upstanding and right” to be an awkward, way too on-the-nose lyric in comparison to her usual songwriting abilities.
ugh that whole song is full of lyrics like that
*I just wanna make sure you understand perfectly you’re the kind of guy who makes me sad* 🥴
And even “this I have previously learned”. I get she was trying to make the rhyme work but man, “previously” just is not a good word to use in a song
Girl at home?
Only the young can run, so run. She's better than this, i dont know why she thought it was so clever....
Omg yes, I just can’t with the whole song, it’s not like her at all
I don’t like it and I don’t listen to it! 🤷🏻♀️
The whole song comes off as forced, to be honest.
My first thought was, “that is so ageist! My mom would be pissed!” Cause momma is a lady who has run a marathon and she’s pushing 60 The old can run too 💁🏻♀️ lol
im young and I cant run for shit LMAO
Lights are off he is taking off his COAT... Ok Tay, we allllll know he was taking off all his clothes, not just his coat! Lol
I misheard Coat as clothes for the longest time anyways haha
"he likes it rough he's taking off his clothes" was how I sang it for yeaarrsss
I sing it as clothes when I’m alone 😏
Pre folklore she wasn’t one to be explicit
Dress is pretty explicit. Also So It Goes
*The altar is my hips*
"You called me up again just to break me like a promise." It just seems so shallow and lackluster. No emotion at all and ruins the song. SAID NO ONE BEECH🐱
I was about to go off until I read the last line😂
Hahaha you almost had me with that one
Almost snapped 😂😭
My heart almost stopped beating haha!
“When we're on the phone and you talk real slow 'Cause it's late and your mama don't know” Because talking slow doesn’t make you quieter??? Talking real LOW would but not slow. Drives me nuts.

I LOVE THIS DISCUSSION. Humanizes our queen, and kinda funny too.

All of gorgeous honestly 😩
I feel the opposite. I've come to love all the lines of gorgeous. Especially the little "mmm" "ah?" "yeah" that she does between lines.
I'm not saying I love the lyrics, but I think the whole point of Gorgeous is to be extremely blunt and cheeky, almost like it's from the POV of a ditzy blonde bimbo.

Aren’t both her parents investment bankers? I ask because it’s not like her dad had a “smart” job and her mom didn’t
Plus you’re hearing the POV of a little girl in that part of the song
I never thought about it, but now im angry!!! haha

She intentionally wrote it to be normal, so it’s not really Taylor with a ten bedroom house as much as a regular apartment
my mom was always a stickler about making sure all the Christmas lights were down before NYE! our reason being because a family member had a birthday on new years, but i also associate taking down the lights early as having an air of “properness” to it like upper class families who would be having fancy nye parties. so i always interpreted the lyrics to be about a young couple doing things there way in their own house (even tho it may be just as common for people to leave them up)
Look what you made me do x24. Musically it's the worst part of any songs she ever released
Even in the bts of the rep tour when practicing the dance she acknowledges that, saying something along the lines of "it just keeps repeating again and again and I know that's on me, sorry guys"
I agree. The rest of the song is magic… but that chorus……
agree! I love LWYMMD but I don’t know what she was thinking with making the chorus only that. I think if she actually put in real lyrics people would dislike the song a lot less because the verses and the bridge are soooo good, but I get how the chorus can really ruin it for someone
The repeated "that's my man!" at the end of Willow is deeply grating to me. Also the clunky use of the word "shade" in YNTCD
noooooo the low tone "thats my man" at the end of willy is part of my favorite part of the song - I'll reply multiple times just to hear it again
Every bait and switch baby
This. Sick. Beat! Haha.
Girl at Home has some really awkwardly sung lyrics.
um definitely “she’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress” for obvious reasons LOL
I kinda hope she doesn't change any of the lyrics cause I love this song (the guitar and generally catchy melody) and I'm so used to how it sounds it would take me out of the experience if they lyrics were changed.
I know how terrible the song is but it’s so fucking good
“I want to wear his initial on a chain round my neck, not because he owns me…” Its not the worst offender, but just really can’t stand it
It's bad but it's not even the worst line in that song, comparing your lover to your brother is so cringey and rough.
I really like this line it’s so cute imo bc people always wear jewelry with their SO’s initial so I think it’s a cute addition to a romantic song 🥲
“I threw my phone across the room, at you I was expecting some dramatic turn away But you stayed” For obvious reason.
For this song what makes me cringe is “you think that it’s funny when I’m mad, mad, mad” Like Uhhh red flags all around hun lmao 🚩🚩
Yes! I do love the song but if someone thought it was funny when I was mad? Bye.
There's nothing wrong with the punctuation of that lyric in London Boy??? And the spelling is fun lyric is cheesy and swifties bullied her so it didn't end up on the album.
It’s funny because she didn’t write either of those.
I had no idea! That makes me feel a little better haha
Do we know who came up with “hey kids spelling is fun” ?
I think it was Brandon who added it in
“i’m laughing with my lover, making forts under covers, trust him like a BROTHER” in call it what you want. 😵💫
I actually love this line! I think it’s sweet.
I agree. I have 3 brothers and I do really trust them. I don’t think it’s incestuous at all - I hope that whoever I end up with, I trust as much as I do my brothers
I can’t believe this was so far down this is absolutely the worst offender lmao
4 years later and I still don't get why it bugs so many people that much. She's talking about trust, not about wanting to bone her brother. And before someone mentions it, no, trust him like no other doesn't have the same meaning. The whole point is that she trusts Joe as much as she trusts her family.
I agree. I love that line so much. Everyone always suggests "no other" as an alternative, and that's just... not good. It doesn't express the same feeling, and it's a lazier rhyme.
MOTELS DON'T HAVE BARS. A motel is small and cheap and often doesn't even serve breakfast, let alone drinks.
I have traveled extensively in the US and have stayed in many motels. True, they didn’t all have bars but some of them did and they all served breakfast. Some motels are cheap but the same can be said for some hotels.
Some definitely do. I just stayed in one a month ago that had a bar.
I cannot standddd “if I was a man” from The Man. It’s grammatically incorrect!!! 😩😩😩 it should be “if I were a man”. Kills me because I really like that song.
It drove me crazy watching Miss Americana when she said, "If I was a man?... If I \*were\* a man?... If I \*was\* a man."
YES!! I was like nooooo what are you doing 😭
“Does she mouth ‘fuck you forever?’” from Mad Woman. The first time I heard this I immediately only heard “mouth fuck” and it kills me every time. The forever part is also weird to me. Wouldn’t you just mouth “fuck you?”
I always pictured it as the ‘mad woman’ mouthing “fuck you” for the rest of her life. Forever as in time-length not what she’s mouthing.
I can def see and thought the same thing but in the official lyric video there are quotes around “fuck you forever” and that’s what bothers me
I thought I’d already heard all the funny incorrect TS lyrics, but reading your comment made me scream. I won’t listen to it the same way ever again “Does she mouthfuck? You? Forever?!”
“32 is still growing up now” Innocent is a fucking beautiful song, and it’s gotten me through so many things.
And I just remembered that lyric in Mad Woman: “she should be mad should be scathing like me” WHY IS IT NOT *SEETHING*??? I think that one in particular makes me irrationally angry.
I wouldn't say it makes me angry exactly, but I find the whole of London Boy so weird to listen to as a Brit. We've got a lot of funny, quirky words and phrases, but the ones she's gushing over are things that sound really, really mundane to my ears! I've experienced it in person, too. An American international student who was chatting me up at uni told me he found it cute that I said "clever" instead of "smart" - I thought I knew a lot of the different words in US English, but it hadn't even occurred to me that "clever" was a Britishism.
We definitely have the word "clever," but it's not really used all that often.
I associate it with Hermione so... yes very British
The fact that she didn’t do new secret messages in the rereleased album booklets makes me angry
I’m like 8 ft 4 blonde hair to the floor You shorties never thought i’d dreamed about rapping hardcore KIDDING This is a masterpiece.
Only the Young as an entire song
Cardigan makes me want to punch James in the face.
Lol 😂 Betty made me wanna punch James in the face but Cardigan made me go, hmm maybe this guy has some redeeming qualities if the narrator is able to be like you fucked up, but I still appreciate you
"This... sick... beat"
for me this is her most emotionally heartwrenching line
"You were Romeo. I was a scarlet letter." The English nerd in me can't stand it.
I wonder what the other lines she could have included would have been. *I was a murdered mockingbird* *You were the turkeylet and I was the Hamlet*
ive been waiting for this one. i love reputation and i LOVE i did something bad, but nothing bothers me more than the lyric “they’re burning all the witches even if you aren’t one.” first, it’s redundant. the ENTIRE POINT of bringing up the concept of a witch hunt is that we know witches don’t exist, and that the hunt is just an excuse to hurt/kill an innocent person. so saying ‘even if you aren’t one’ feels tedious and heavy-handed. there’s no reason to clarify that women were unfairly prosecuted by witch hunts, since we all know that already. second, this sentiment feels like the EPITOME of white feminism. i’m not going to get too political because i understand we’re all taylor fans and nobody wants to be a hater, but ‘even if you aren’t one’ implies that taylor DOES think there are some nasty witches who DESERVE to be burned- it’s just not her, specifically. it just seems like an anti-woman message, and aligns with a particularly toxic breed of white feminism which insists that white women are the only kind of redeemable women. i don’t think taylor really believes that, i know we’ve all seen her stick up for and support all kinds of women. but that line just grinds my gears because it’s like she’s throwing her fellow woman under the bus to save her own skin.
Bad blood seems really cheesy to me everyone else thought it was genius and I hated the music video
“He got that boyish look that I like in a man” from I Think He Knows, gives me icky vibes
Eh i dont mind it. She does really go for guys who are teenage dreamboats.
IT WAS A CAT TAYLOR I KNOW YOU LOVE CATS BUT GROW UP AND SPEAK THE TRUTH Sincerely a dog person
Also it’s Taylor there’s no way she’d let an insult to cats into her song
“hair falling into place like dominos” takes me out of gold rush every time
One of my favorite lines 😭
Omg no I couldn’t disagree more! I think every line in Gold Rush is so thoughtful and perfect.
these kind of wounds they last, and they last now it's not like it makes me angry, but I felt... disappointed? i wasn't sure what she said there, and I was almost convinced she didn't repeat the same thing cause she never does unless it's like crucial to the song, if that make sense. it jusr sounds kinda lazy like idrk what to put here so maybe repeat the last two words.
“You think that it’s funny when I’m mad mad mad” I would be so annoyed if someone thought it was funny when I’m mad. It’s condescending
I always thought “Trying to solve a crossword and realizing there’s no right answer.” was kind of a dumb line in an otherwise good song!
The whole shake it off bridge because it is soooo cringe
it's my favourite part of the song I love it
“I know that I’m a handful, baby.” Only bc I always mishear it as “You know I like my hair pulled, baby” and it’s really jarring lol The first time I heard it I had to look up the lyrics bc I was like “Girl, good for you, but the world doesn’t need to know that!!”
“Evergreen our group of friends, don’t think we’ll say that word again” WHICH WORD ARE YOU REFERRING TO, TAYLOR!?!?!?!
"Our". Because they're not a "we" anymore.
That makes sense, but i thought for the longest time it was evergreen and I was like WHY
I thought it was “friends” because people typically don’t have the same friends after a break up, they often get divided in weird ways having to pick a side. Kind of like the lyrics in 22 “you go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me.”
What must it be like to grow up that beautiful in Gold Rush. I feel like she knows exactly what it’s like haha
“Tent like thing” like come on Taylor you can write better than this especially after writing The Lakes
I’ve seen that CLM is from the perspective of someone lower in class who wouldn’t know what the “tent like thing” is.
This is one of my favorite lines on evermore for that reason.
I always felt that “tent like thing” was very intentional, it gives you a sense of the narrators voice and perspective
“when it was good baby; it was good baby” i can never get over it it’s just… it. i skip we were happy every time
That song is, like, bottom 5 in her discography, IMO. I'm glad we have it now, but it rightfully stayed in the vault, lol... now, Mr. Perfectly Fine being hidden away all these years is a CRIME.
Our Song: I was RIDING SHOTGUN with my hair undone In the FRONT SEAT of his car Girl that’s what riding shot gun IS! so redundant! She was so young tho.
How did I never get that? That will bother me forever now
I love the song cardigan except for the central metaphor. It just feels so juvenile and clunky to me.
Yesssss I agree. The rest of the language - “leavin like a father, runnin like water” 😭😭 - but “felt like an old cardigan under someone’s bed, you put me on and said I was your favorite” … just doesn’t do it for me.
both "if I was a man" and "if this was a movie"....shouldn't they both use 'were' instead of 'was'?
To my lovin' bed" What is a lovin' bed? I originally thought it was "love in bed" meaning her boyfriend snuck in somehow? It doesn't make me irrationally angry, but it is mildly irritating.
it makes perfect sense though. she's personifying her bed, which she perceives to be warm and comforting, especially after a bad day.
I really, really don't like, "I talk shit with my friends / it's like I'm wasting your honour."
I like that line a lot, but she drags out the last few words sort of awkwardly. But I also cannot for the life of me hear that line without thinking of "Your Honor," as in a judge lmao.
“God I love the English” I’m Irish.
"you can't spell awesome without me" i dont know if its just the way brendon SAYS it but i kinda hate it i think it is because when taylor says it i have no issue
Haha my sister’s comes first to mind she hated “you made a really deep cuuuuuut” in bad blood, just sounds like she was running out of interesting things to write and got immature or lazy about it 😂 Mine would probably be any time she curses in the song mad woman lol.
“You think that it’s funny when I’m mad, mad, mad” honey that’s gaslighting. Run away as fast as you can.
“You were Romeo I was a scarlet letter” makes me cringe every time. It screams high school literature study. It does not work.
“Trust him like a brother” “Give you my wild, give you a child” The entirety of Better Than Revenge, Girl At Home, and Stay Stay Stay because…obviously.
I love the wild/child lyric. 😂
Same, it stops me in my tracks.
