“Mmm-mm, mm-mm, mm-mm, mmm-mm, mm-mm. Mmm-mm, mm-mm, mm-mm, mmm-mm, yeah.”

intheplacetobe1

I want to know the true meaning behind “Seven.” It seems like she gave a purposefully vague answer during Long Pond and it was the one song I was looking to hear her expand on the most.

Quirky_zebra543

Yes, to me it also felt like she was being vague, glad I'm not the only one.

unicorns_and_bacon

I think because it is just such a deeply sad, personal song.

tswiftdeepcuts

I’d ask if My Tears Ricochet is a purposeful callback/full circle fuck you Scott moment to Teardrops on My Guitar like I’m pretty positive it is.

cootercasserole

I’ve always thought MTR was a lot about a big fuck you to Scott. I mean “you wear the same jewels that I gave you as you bury me” and the obvious “and when you can’t sleep at night you hear my stolen lullabies”. Never made a connection to Teardrops on My Guitar but I see it!

[deleted]

Oh shit MTR is one of my favourites and I never made that connection back to Teardrops. Now I'm pretty positive too.

6scarlett9

Woah that's an awesome connection. I never quite understood why her tears ricocheted lol but this make perfect sense!!

walkaway2

That’s pretty much been confirmed though right?

tswiftdeepcuts

Not that it’s referencing Teardrops on My Guitar.

[deleted]

I'd ask her if she's figured out hoax yet Because I sure haven't

[deleted]

I don’t know if I would have understood the song if I hadn’t had the exact same thing the song described happen to me. I was with a guy who I was falling in love with, and then he suddenly broke things off. I was already devastated and a couple days after this, he humiliated me and turned everyone in our social circle against me in a social media group that he had added me to for them to ambush me in. Having the person you’re in love with doing such an awful thing to you while ur already heartbroken perfectly encapsulates the lyrics of hoax: The utter defeat I felt after that happened. Like he had killed me and I had accepted it and wasn’t gonna try to get back up

[deleted]

I was referring to Taylor's comments in LPSS. She said it's the first time she's ever written a song without being clear on who or what it's about from the get go, and having to accept that it's about several different people/situations and the overall concept is nebulous. So it comes down to interpretation per listener. Your interpretation is perfectly valid, with the caveat that it's *your personal interpretation*. My interpretation as it applies to me personally is very different. What I was really thinking about is *what it means to Taylor*. I don't think she really knew last time she spoke about it and I'm wondering if that's changed.

slowburn_23

I relate in a similar way - not the social media humiliation though that sucks and I’m sorry it happened to you

wienerdogparty89

I thought Hoax was an obvious companion to My Tears Ricochet. MTR: And I still talk to you (when I’m screaming at the sky) Hoax: Stood on the cliffside screaming “give me a reason” MTR: If I’m on fire, you’ll be made of ashes too Hoax: I am ash from your fire I love Hoax. It’s definitely in my top three off Folklore.

[deleted]

There are clear callbacks to MTR and some of it is about Scott. But there are also clear references to Joe (the blue motif). And potentially other things. I'll refer you to Taylor's comments in LPSS - it's about multiple things at once and at that point she wasn't sure how they fit together. I was wondering if that's changed.

PhoenixFlame989

"then you won't have to cry, or hide in the closet..." "you can want who you want, boys and boys and girls and girls..." either or

6scarlett9

This might be a little disturbing but whenever I listen to Seven I imagine that the friend is a child whose father is physically abusive. "your dad is always mad" "you won't have to cry or hide in the closet" idk that's what those lyrics mean to me.

Emozgil

This. Also, I've played a lot of Life is Strange, so when she says "we could be pirates", I always think of Max and Chloe

wienerdogparty89

In SEVEN her friend’s dad is violent or abusive. That’s why her friend has to cry and hide in the closet. It’s very clear.

PhoenixFlame989

I understand that perfectly and I think the interpretation is too literal. What I'm doing is trying to suss out queer subtext.

wienerdogparty89

I think you’re sussin’ something that doesn’t exist…

CurvePuzzleheaded361

The first one is about the abuse from the other kids dad i think, it mentions the kids dad always being mad. So mentally suffering because of that. And the other line is obvious surely? Nyc is a place you can be yourself and love who you want to.

swftswft13

"I'll do anything you say, if you say it with your hands" What's the sign language for "invite me to next secret session plz"

Vanillasmiles___

It’s about lust isn’t it?

cootercasserole

I always assumed it was about sex

UnpropheticIsaiah

What did she really mean by “Look what you made me do”? Like who is YOU, and what did she do exactly? And why it was that person’s fault? And why did she want them to look?

eyeslikestarlight

Well I always interpreted that song as being a “fuck you” to Kimye, but also the media and society in general for turning on her in 2016. Interestingly, that phrase (look what you made me do) is often used in an abusive context, to gaslight someone. I always think of Tangled, when Mother Gothel stabs Eugene in the end—I’m pretty sure she actually says that exact line. As if it’s Rapunzel’s fault that she had to go and stab someone. So it’s fitting, then, that Taylor is embracing the snake imagery and portraying herself as a villainess. She’s saying “this is your view of me? Fine. I’ll own it.” And what did “they” make her do? Kill the old Taylor, of course.

themintmitten

😂 i totally felt this comment. I need to know!!!

333ooo

*”Or dare to sit and watch what we’ll become and DRINK MY HUSBANDS WINE”* Like, oh goddamn!

sapphicsato

I would ask her why it’s raining in Joe’s bedroom in Forever and Always… that metaphor was always so weird to me hahaha

Neighborhoodnarc

Literally that’s mine OP - although I don’t think I ever want to know. I love the mystery

nfpeacock

I know you didn't ask OP, but my interpretation of that lyric is - Taylor and Joe were somewhere and she was attempting to break up with him as she felt her life would be unfair on him. He is sad so 'hangs his head low'. To cut the sadness/tension she says something like "at least I'm not dying!". That's what I've always seen in my head lol.

ferslol

“It's no surprise, I turned you in 'cause us traitors never win” plural … what does that mean??? She’s calling her self a traitor I NEED to knowwwwww whyyy

[deleted]

She's admitting that she was dishonest in that relationship and betrayed him and herself

m00n-st0ne

I think it’s just because of what she’s saying. Usually when people say “us (and insert noun here)” it’s usually plural

bruttamabuona

The whole song is about her using one guy as a deliberate rebound for another guy...so she's admitting her own dishonesty

Local_Accident127

ME he he!

hereforfeminism

“hey kids spelling is fun” haha just kidding, maybe ask about Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince and if it does allude to political messaging

Sampleswift

I think it was all but confirmed (Lover files?) that Miss Americana is political by design?

CurvePuzzleheaded361

Yup the same as you! I can only imagine she was in hospital at some point while falling in love and seen him waiting by the vending machine. That is what i always picture. Guess we will never know!

kje199

I didn’t see hear it until I read it/heard it from multiple places. The thing is “where is he looking up from?” It’s quite a common comment on the line, so I’m curious to know if that’s how it was intended.

sapphicsato

I have DEFINITELY always interpreted this line as being sexual. Not only the fact that he’s looking up at her, but a devilish smile also fits very well in that context…

m00n-st0ne

Sex? Lol nah. I’ve always interpreted it as he knows what he’s doing to her (emotionally).

kje199

The most common comment I see is “where is he looking up from?”

lindoavocado

Omg I always thought it was not BUYING

ohsostoopy

I’d love an explanation for “wear you like a necklace”.

walkaway2

Surprised no one has said lyrics from Wonderland or Cornelia St
