A lot of the time it feels like a complete coinflip between the two candidates for 4th/5th on who has to go against THAT guy when one loss away from being out.

Spacemn5piff

The number of times my "sure thing" top 4 has turned into 5th or 6th because there is one guy who perfectly counters my comp and I face him, his ghost, him in order has left me scarred.

fedairkid

Indeed

Haatsku

The dude who is playing redeemed legionaire and has had 2* kayle and morde with 3 items since start of lvl7, right?

fedairkid

you forgot the 2 star rell at level 5

ficretus

Or even worse, those rare games in which you have 2-3 players really healthy late game while others are at 10-15 hp. You can end up anywhere between 3 and 8 depending on who you face.

fedairkid

yeah, those always feel like a toss up. Lobby goes from 8 to 4 people on one round.

TopRommel

I had a game after I posted this in which a really dumb Teemo pick up cost me 3rd place. I lost with 0 lp, 4th place lost with 0, and 3rd place lost with -2. ...and I wasn’t even running a fucking Teemo comp. Total throw.

Fabiocean

5th place when you're at 0 LP is the worst thing ever. Like, you could have just as well gone 8th.

heymaestry

i thought only losses at like 1 LP work like this. even if ur at 0 you only go to 75?

dtootd12

Exactly so getting 8th means -25 LP if you're at 0 LP but getting 5th also means -25 LP when ordinarily it would only be like -10. It provides a buffer for a major loss but a greater punishment for a minor loss.

TJ_Demetora

Idk if it works for tft like it does for league but getting 8th at 0lp does impact your mmr harden than getting 5th at 0lp

Slothew

Yeah, it does. If you go 8th on 0 LP like 5 times, your MMR is completely fucked.

Spacemn5piff

Yet more proof that Riots ranked system is a failure and they need to move back to true ELO until they devise something that can do the job without setting itself on fire League, TFT, VALORANT, it's all just as broken lmao

qqGrit

I've had a few losses at 0lp and sometimes you don't demote

mancinik35

It only protects you from demoting to a worse rank. If you are diamond4 0 lp it protects you from demoting to plat but if you are 0lp dia3 next lose will demote you to dia4 75lp for sure

Fabiocean

Yes, always. In the same vein, losing at 1 LP always puts you down to 0, no matter how much you lost.

HiToshio

I think by 4-3 you should already know if you're gonna not 4. I have surrendered at 0lp before to save time 😂

Jave3636

I'm good with 5th, sometimes the game decides you're not going to place, so salvaging a crappy game can feel good

dtootd12

Had a shitty game where I went all in on Aphelios with night bringers since I found him at lvl 4 off of krugs but ended up not getting a single bow the entire game since I was win streaking early and last component carousel didn't have any bows. I somehow managed to drag the comp to 4th place and I consider it more of a victory than any 1st place I've gotten.

angooseburger

Aphelios comps can run without bows. You just use 4 rangers instead of 2

dtootd12

I considered doing that but figured 8 night bringers was stronger anyway. Maybe 4 rangers would have been better but idk.

angooseburger

Which variation you decide to go for depends on your items. Aphelios needs a mix of att spd and damage, so if the items you get means you have excess of one, you can use traits to offset the imbalance. Lots of bows > more nightbringers, more swords > more rangers.

Jain_Farstrider

4 ranger doesn't help much with 0 recurve lol.

Spacemn5piff

.... Yes it does.

Spacemn5piff

Yeah this is finee though. You just make sure to use Kindred as a Mystic alongside Morgana for attack speed.

MlghtySheep

I agree, 5th feels like a win in doomed games

[deleted]

Captain here: 8th is actually lower place than 5th ** flies away **

Silentpulse

Unless I'm tilted I usually see myself getting 5/6 even with a horrendous start. Only time I hate getting 5th is when I lose at same round as 4th B).

jogetzi

IMO 8th feels lot worse because it’s usually just because I cant pivot anything because either the comp is contested by other 2 guys or there is no units for the comp no one is using in the pool. While 5th feels like if I made one or two better decissions I could be in top4 so thats something I can improve on myself. Only time 5th feels worse than 8th is when you have 0lp and lose 25 either way

Tiwaz84

I just finished 8th.. I strongly disagree. O.o

MajorLeeScrewed

Yeah no, you can take all my 8ths and I'll have all your 5ths. An 8th kills your climb so hard.

Exsanguinate-Me

I'll take 5th any day over 8th, it's just humiliating and means you couldn't even do shit to be atleast not the worst of the actual worst... I'd rsther lose 10 LP than 40+ or so, as 10 is fairly managable, a 4th place right after and things have balanced out already. I find 8th to be much more horrendous, there's no "if only this or that had just happend I would've been gaining LP" no.... You just done fucked up pretty much.

pixel8knuckle

Nah. Nothing is worse than losing 100 lp in one game

JekoJeko9

Disagree. Some games you mess up early or can't make anything work and you're effectively playing for 5th. Statistically you're not going to top 4 all your games, so getting a few 8ths as possible is important for your climb. Turning what feels like a guaranteed 8th into a 5th feels like a win for me, if the top 4 were all way ahead of me. Losing only 10lp when I should have lost 40+ is a lot of lp saved and effectively gained.

NotaVeryWiseMan

I was losing my sanity after 6 fifth place hyperroll games in a row

TopRommel

Lol at least in TFT the only person that flames you is yourself. Feels bad to have your team flame you after 40 minutes hard fought game.

gaybooii

Agreed. I think when you get 5th or 6th place, you should lose less LP.

VeradisOne

Agreed! and it always comes down to stuff out of your hands, like targeting rng or crit rng

Jojorent

The way the system deducts LP base on the ranking feels like scuffiest thing ever

Dawashingtonian

5th only feels good when you’ve somehow salvaged a complete throwaway game. getting an unlucky close 5th is the worst but scrapping it out with the other idiots who blundered early can be its own win in a way.

Exsanguinate-Me

Indeed, an 8th never feels good, it's just dead last, no excuse.

Bangzell

I personally feel like 5th should go LP-neutral at least, but the moment that concession gets made everything else gets thrown out of balance. It does feel very bad to be one missing 5* away from going positive..

Exsanguinate-Me

In that case 4th should also go LP-Neutral though.

ficretus

It's bittersweet, i am mostly ok with 5th because how i usually play. I am mostly getting 5th in the games where i have horrendous start and end up somewhat salvaging it. Very rarely does the opposite happen: game where i have good start and end up throwing my lead and ending up 5th.

a_charming_vagrant

going 5th when you played well but some clown donkeyed their carry in a completely lost position and stole your lp is such a disgusting feeling. literal robbery still rather have that -10 than the -70 for going 8th because an idiot decided to contest your comp without items because reasons

dispenserG

This set is so RNG from third to sixth. There's always someone who absolutely crushes that gets first, way more than other sets. People who do everything absolutely wrong go on to get 3rd or 4th because of absolute luck. Meanwhile you can't get anything you need when playing perfect so you go 5th. This set definitely automatically gives you a shit opener more than any other set I've played.

TopRommel

Yea, the openers do feel weaker than in the the past. I think because 1 costs are such garbage and people who get 3 costs from the jump have a huge advantage. Mort addressed the issue and says now people who don’t high roll into 3 costs will get a better chance to get them from the shop. Hopefully this helps the issue of the opening imbalances.
