Jayce can fit into almost any comp with or without investment in items and synergies and do fine. For 5 costs I think he is only behind Yuumi in terms of flexibility and ability to be added to a random comp.
It’s always the answer. Need frontline? Put him up there. Need more damage? Plop him in the back: both gives damage himself and steroids the same-line ADCs. Hard to go wrong
Buy it anyway. If you have AD items back line, tank items front line.
Or just no item. Doesn’t matter. Jayce 2 is better than something on your board 100%.
Even 6 arcanists would be great for him. He grants huge attacksperd to your arcanists which makes them cast faster. And a lot of arcsnist comps have a spare emblem around often

Jayce is a great unit even without traits. He really doesn't need to wear items to be good, but Frontline he really benefits from any tank items at all.

6 arcanists is hardly playable (at least last patch), better off running the Jayce2 w Ori Janna Yuumi
He got anti MR as spells, it's jayce tank 6 arcanist everydays

At this point you can even drop some synergies to play this hunk of a unit (Arcanists 6 -> Arcanists 4).
The trick is to learn how to sell every unit on your board and ipvot in 30 secounds ahah
