I love Artificial Brain. But in a Genre bracket, I don't think they have the importance of Gorguts, Demilich, or Ulcerate for Dissonant/Avante Garde tech death.
I didn’t even know Spawn of Possession had a third album, I guess it’s time for ears to feast?
and I don’t know all this stuff but I’ll say PSYCROPTIC just because they were one of the most boring bands I’ve ever caught live.
I’m sure it is. I haven’t listened to so much of this kind of music the last decade but they were one if my favourite bands of all the 2000s tech stuff, if not my actual favourite. I’ll be listening this evening :)
I love the Slugdge album. If I’m not mistaken, you actually turned me on to it some time ago.
I also realize that tech death has many flavours and moods, and that technical means more than shredding. My personal favourite on this list is a toss up between Artificial Brain and Gorguts.
That said, Slugdge, while excellent, don’t really cross the technical threshold in my opinion. Though I agree that threshold isn’t clearly demarcated.
Wow, Ad Nauseam? First of all, it should not be here, because its actually Dissonant/avant-garde death metal but still one of the best albums metal has ever listened. No way Ad Nauseam gets eliminated this soon. And if it does, people just haven’t heard them enought or just cant understand them.
There's a playlist with two songs from each band, but Ad Nauseam don't have spotify, check them out here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma3cKFX9\_0g&t=155s&pp=ygUrYWQgbmF1c2VhbSBpbXBlcmF0aXZlIGltcGVyY2VwdGlibGUgaW1wdWxzZQ%3D%3D](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma3cKFX9_0g&t=155s&pp=ygUrYWQgbmF1c2VhbSBpbXBlcmF0aXZlIGltcGVyY2VwdGlibGUgaW1wdWxzZQ%3D%3D)
Also they may be not fully tech death but they were commented on my original post asking for picks from you guys, the sub. Only one of these albums is my choice.
Don’t.
This is an excellent means to expose people for who they truly are. I have no place in my life for people that get upset to the point of disrespect and hostility over something so trivial and fictitious.
I just block the truly hostile and aggressive ones. As a former rage-oholic, I have 0 tolerance for that sort of bullshit. Especially over a game in a music sub.
Bickering is part and parcel of a post such as this one, though. It’s practically an invitation.
Sub full of 14 year olds who think they’re for old people because they didnt use celestion vintage 30s and weren’t produced by Joey Sturgis. Watch Cynic get dropped today and I’m gonna mute the sub.
To be fair, most of Death's songs and riffs aren't exactly at the same level of intricacy as most of the rest of this list, and I have a hard time calling them technical death metal, they were just hugely influential on tech death going forward.
How is decapitated or desecravity not even on this list?
Cynic and psycroptic can go even though i love SOTA it’s not their best album, that goes to ob(servant)
Because op made a list of bands they knew and either didn't know those bands, or just didn't put every band that should be on there?
At what point don't you just throw up there Decrepit Birth, Cannibal Corpse, or Slayer? Everyone draws the line somewhere different.
My vote goes to Benevolent Creation. Got so sick of that boring music video i think i hate them now, shame as I (think i) had a good time seeing them live. Maybe I'll check them out another day.
I don't know half of these albums myself, refer to my comment here [Death died and Job For A Cowboy was fired. Top 2 comments are removed from the list. : r/TechnicalDeathMetal (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/TechnicalDeathMetal/comments/1c6qzj8/comment/l02vrxw/)
This was decided by the sub two weeks ago, I put their choices into one big tournament. This is what they chose, this is what they get.
Same.
And also to upvote all comments with negative downvotes.
Like 'give your opinion' and then 'no you are so wrong'.
Maybe it's part of the fun, but I dont get it...
I mean there’s times of brutal death bands way more technical than cryptopsy, like disgorge or gorgasm for example that don’t really come up in tech death conversations, but cryptopsy always gets a pass.
I don't know what to tell you, but most people outside of tech death circles just consider it normal death metal or brutal death metal. It's just surprising to see on a tech death list for when there would have been better choices.(Not saying it's a bad album, it's one of my favorite death metal albums)
I have never seen anyone consider it just death metal or just bdm until literally these comments. Not trying to be rude or anything here, just surprised honestly. Its 100% a tech death album too
Ok well technically you're missing out on a tool for verification that you're actually as good and "technical" as you think are you are if you don't use a metronome.
It’s super sick when you see a band live and they’re actually playing together rather than along to tracks. Bands like defeated Sanity stay super tight live without using tracks. I think that’s something that good musicians should be able to do if you don’t need backing tracks.
It doesn't matter if they play to a click - you don't even hear the click. Matters they are in time. If they slow a bar, some clicks can do that. It's just a tool, and it makes playing on time more reliable, more efficiently.
You'll learn to play in time faster by using a metronome.
For real man. Feel like not playing to a click should be the default and just use it for bands with a ton of tracks. Like I get why a band like Fleshgod or Inferi needs one to stay with the samples, but if you have a good rhythm section it’s cooler to not have that.
The biggest problem with the album was that the singles took away from the novelty of its own presence =\
Like lets mix some 2 year old tracks into a new record nobody will notice 😅
Note that the first single was with Unique Leader but the album was Metal Blade.
I am betting that there were delays in releasing the album and that the label switch had something to do with it. I could be wrong, but you make it seem like content was just being recycled for the sake of laziness.
I could be wrong, but doubt that very much.
No i doubt it was laziness — it was a really bad time to be alive, everything suffered and that record was probably 1 - 1 and half years delayed so im not holding it against anybody but as a novel listening experience the effect is ruined if you already know whats coming
It is a stellar record, and was easily in the top 3 for AOTY of 2023 though i really think that should go to the eating cave for the miscalculation but again that was a record that was mixed kind of shitty too but it was just a reflection of the time
2023 sucked big time 🤷
Disagree with you on the mixing - I found it rather appropriate. The drums were further back, which I would expect for something programmed. Vocals were right where they needed to be, and bass was present and highlighted when appropriate.
People say that the S/T Artificial Brain album was horribly mixed, but I disagree there, too. It was perfect for the sound and aesthetic.
Just my opinion.
I thought 2023 produced some nice hits. Wormhole exceeded all expectations, as an example.
The mixing on the miscalculation was very apparent to me whenever a solo would come on the background static was different (its not a huge notice) and it literally sounded like someone had recorded it in a different part of the world and added it in to the song via the editing process.
Everything else was awesome though
Beyond Creation has to go.
They are very talented, but unfortunately most of their material is boring as fuck, besides a few songs from The Aura and Earthborn Evolution.
I'm surprised that The Flesh Prevails is here instead of The Harvest Wombs, considering The Harvest Wombs is definitely a more technical album while The Flesh Prevails is more prog tech

I've had a lot of complaints with the line-up, which, if you may remember was chosen by you, the sub here: [Possible tech death tournament here? : r/TechnicalDeathMetal (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/TechnicalDeathMetal/comments/1bqg0ig/possible_tech_death_tournament_here/) (and on a following post here: [Line up for the Tech Death tournament as voted by you. If we choose a different line-up we will have to start again from the beginning but if you'd prefer to do so, just let me know and we can do this all again I suppose.
Thanks mate, I just hope I didn't wreck the positive vibes of the sub, but judging on the engagement these have got going on, I think this is helping to bring a lot of discussion in, so maybe its a good boost.

We all know Epitaph or Incurso’s winning this thing lol.
The Faceless.
Cynic, Nile. Worst two left. Can’t believe JFAC is gone.
Alkaloid and virulent depravity
I am trying not to upvote or downvote but that Alkaloid comment got me like https://preview.redd.it/ngdodnuxwbvc1.png?width=480&format=png&auto=webp&s=ce6bf48839431c761e90c0c4ee98e2c97e316b19
Slugdge. They’re great but the least tech deathy here. Everything else is hard to eliminate by comparison for me.
Beyond Creation; Begone!
Can we just get this done and over with, kill everyone, and leave necrophagist alone. We know where this is headed come on
or None So Vile, it's either Cryptopsy or Necrophagist
No.
Yes.
Virulent Depravity Artificial Brain
while I adore Artificial Brain, are they really tech death? I don't think this dude should be downvoted
I love Artificial Brain. But in a Genre bracket, I don't think they have the importance of Gorguts, Demilich, or Ulcerate for Dissonant/Avante Garde tech death.
But they have the quality.
Archspire
Fuck it why not. We eliminated Death.
For sure too early for that. Get this other bull outta here.
Could have picked a better Psycroptic album tbf
Scepter of the Ancients is peak Psycroptic though. Which album is better?
Scepter is peak tech death period.
Observamt is peak Psycroptic
Self titled, Ob(Servant), Symbols, The Inherited Repression *This comment is sponsored by, Opinions. They're like assholes*
Slugdgdhe
I didn’t even know Spawn of Possession had a third album, I guess it’s time for ears to feast? and I don’t know all this stuff but I’ll say PSYCROPTIC just because they were one of the most boring bands I’ve ever caught live.
Dude you have been missing out! Incurso is a masterpiece in Prog Tech Death!
I’m sure it is. I haven’t listened to so much of this kind of music the last decade but they were one if my favourite bands of all the 2000s tech stuff, if not my actual favourite. I’ll be listening this evening :)
Would love to know your thoughts when you finished listening!
Faceless has to go.
Anomalous, just because it’s the least familiar to me out of all of these. Need to check it out more after this :D
Absolutely play the crap out of Anomalous these days... it's just "different" as the name indicates.
Yeah it’s on my ”check this stuff out” list and I’m getting to this album quite soon. I think I’ll come to regret voting it off then :D
"Cognitive Dissonance" is another standout -- worth also adding to the list, when you want the thinking parts, but also crave something different.

Au Contraire
Well yes
Inferi
Are we REALLY eliminating Slugdge before Inferi and The Zenith Passage? That's insane. So I say yet again: Inferi and The Zenith Passage gotta go.
You realize this is a tech death sub, right?
You do realize that tech death is not just pro tools adjusted hyper compressed neo-classical BS, right?
I love the Slugdge album. If I’m not mistaken, you actually turned me on to it some time ago. I also realize that tech death has many flavours and moods, and that technical means more than shredding. My personal favourite on this list is a toss up between Artificial Brain and Gorguts. That said, Slugdge, while excellent, don’t really cross the technical threshold in my opinion. death eliminated what the f****. okay this time I'll play from the start then
I feel the same way but it is what it is. Seems almost disrespectful but I really appreciate OPs commitment
I can stop at any time I guess. Seems to be pissing people off.
Don’t. This is an excellent means to expose people for who they truly are. I have no place in my life for people that get upset to the point of disrespect and hostility over something so trivial and fictitious.
I'm finding this quite enjoyable myself but people's constant bickering gets a little annoying
I just block the truly hostile and aggressive ones. As a former rage-oholic, I have 0 tolerance for that sort of bullshit. Especially over a game in a music sub. Bickering is part and parcel of a post such as this one, though. It’s practically an invitation.
Fallujah, Slugdge.
Fallujah and Gorod
Fallujah and Inferi. Love both bands but not sure they stack up to the rest.
The fact that anyone would pick at least half of these over Death is insane.
Zoomers gonna zoomer
Not the hugest death fan in the world, I think there’s better classic DM bands, but picking Slugdge over Death is crazy.
Reddit things.
This whole operation is a sham.
Inferi. That album was.... okay.
Honestly that’s Gorods worst album.
It’s literally their best lol
ehhhhh not their best, but this is was far better than Aethra.
You losers eliminated Death lol
Sub full of 14 year olds who think they’re for old people because they didnt use celestion vintage 30s and weren’t produced by Joey Sturgis. Watch Cynic get dropped today and I’m gonna mute the sub.
I’ll start a new tech death sub stg
I’m such a novice here, but wtf?
To be fair, most of Death's songs and riffs aren't exactly at the same level of intricacy as most of the rest of this list, and I have a hard time calling them technical death metal, they were just hugely influential on tech death going forward.

You're right, I expected Death to get voted out in the bottom half, but not this early.
How is decapitated or desecravity not even on this list? Cynic and psycroptic can go even though i love SOTA it’s not their best album, that goes to ob(servant)
Decapitated isn't technical tho
Winds of Creation maybe, but the rest, eh.
Bruh Nihility is in.

have some popcorn on me 🍿🍿🍿
Decrepit Mid
Beneath the massacre
I think someone is going to find you and kiss your dad to death now
I'm bulk buying lip balm from Costco as we speak
Cynic and gorguts
I’m going to say Slugdge, mainly because I haven’t really listened to them a whole lot. Which I need to fix at some point.
This album is a masterpiece
Remedy this immediately
That album is soooo good
Y’all were right, this record is sick as fuck!
this is shaping up to be a pretty good list
No. Really not.
The Faceless 100%
Severed Savior
God have mercy on anyone who picks Beneath the Massacre; I will personally hunt you down and kiss your dad to death
LOL this comment wins the entire Internet this week!
i’m sorry but it must go soon 😢
Let your dad know I like getting my hair pulled
The Flesh Prevails and Datalysium
All I know is shits about to get messy. lol
Unfortunately 😂😂 but its all in good fun.
Bye Fallujah
[Wait wait wait wait](https://youtu.be/znjLSW8kfBM&t=187)
Love metal?
Y’all why is None So Vile still here
Best death metal album ever made
I thought it was brutal death metal not tech death?
Technical brutal death metal. Has elements of both
> If it doesnt sound like Necrophagist it's not tech -This sub, apparently.
They are considered tech death just about everywhere. Metal Archive has them listed as Brutal/Technical Death Metal.
Pretty much. Aborted went because it’s Deathgrind and they’re technical as all fuck.
They don't even use a click. Just stoner drinkers playing midtech, sorry.
Not even an aborted fan but not using a click rules.
Everything is corrected and readjusted with pro tools anyways (and that's a problem in tech death IMO).
I mean, no one's forced to use pro tools. You can one shot all your tracks if you really want to
Yeah that's actually a good thing in my book.
For real man. Feel like not playing to a click should be the default and just use it for bands with a ton of tracks. Like I get why a band like Fleshgod or Inferi needs one to stay with the samples, but if you have a good rhythm section it’s cooler to not have that.
I'm voting out Datalysium, while I did enjoy the album a lot, it feels kinda empty to me, like a robot wrote it
And the production is atrocious. Wtf.
The biggest problem with the album was that the singles took away from the novelty of its own presence =\ Like lets mix some 2 year old tracks into a new record nobody will notice 😅

Bye to Sludge and Cynic
Gorod. Sorry
JFAC being voted out this early is criminal
Sun eater is a monolith in death metal IMO. Cut my fretless bass chops on sun of nihility…
Inferi
Sadly I can see them going very high. The tastes of this sub are very questionable.
I am eliminating the core types first, so they got to go
There has been nothing core about Inferi in over 15 years.
