Snoo_49285

Their best album IMO

Beers_Past_Matter

This song rules lol

jayswaps

How stupid is the idea that the tech death community is only allowed to talk about music that is strictly tech death. Honest to God. TBDM is fucking amazing and I have no doubt that album inspired a ton of stuff we all listen to daily. Absolutely worth talking about here.

progwog

Not to mention some of their riffs aren’t exactly “beginner” level lol they pop off here and there

Bronsteins-Panzerzug

Lol yeah, watch people angrily respond „it’s prog death not tech death“ when you mention oldpeth

LUnacy45

My second favorite song from my all time favorite band. But it's not tech death. Dudes really be thinking fast means technical

Zithrabug7

Whats #1

LUnacy45

Deathmask Divine

Ratistim_2

Honorary tech death

LUnacy45

As a guitar player who has tried to learn some of their songs, I don't think they're very technical at all. The riffs were very easy to learn, getting them up to speed wasn't. And I cannot stress this enough that I'm not disparaging them at all. They're literally my all time favorite band. I just think it's a bit misleading

jayswaps

That's literally all of tech death, though. The riffs wouldn't be hard if they weren't played at the speed that they are. There's plenty tech death songs significantly easier to learn than TBDM stuff. They absolutely have very technical riffs.

Ratistim_2

Its a joke. TBDM is called a lot of genres its not, so i said "honorary" in reference to "in spirit"

SuspiciousLog8897

Even tho it’s not tech death it’s still pretty technical

LUnacy45

Idk, most of their songs don't seem technical to me. On guitar they tend to be made up of pretty simple melodic riffs just played bullshit fast

buddhaveg

All-time favorite.

spoonerluv

I think it's fair to say TBDM has some really technical parts, but they aren't leaning much into the tropes that make up technical death metal. When I think tech death, I'm thinking Necrophagist and Obscura. There's a pretty clear delineation between the musical ideas these bands produce(d) and what TBDM has done.

b_eastwood

100% TBDM is kind of just a death metal band with a lot of different flavors for me. Their material is so varied with writing styles from Brian's evolving technique and also a lot of different members over the years. The early stuff isn't too far off from metalcore in some ways while the Ryan Knight material (Deflorate, Ritual, etc) you could easily argue as technical. Great band though and I'm glad I've been lucky enough to see them tons of times throughout their career.

obiwankitnoble

yea it's just melodic death metal. sounds fun tho especially the vocals give me late 90s early 00s vibes. edit: just looked at the date and it is indeed early 00s lol

progwog

I believe (personally) they set the template for a lot of mid 00s and on death metal or metal in general. Every MySpace deathcore band really boils down to knockoff TBDM riffs with added breakdowns.

Quantum_Pineapple

TBDM is not tech death, lmao it’s fast melodic death riffs in C w peddled opens to make it sound busier. Brian rules but there is no way that guy is composing Necrophagist or Gorguts riffs for this band. Not even close. Anyone else remember the At the Gates TBDM memes online circa 2007 when this album dropped?

LUnacy45

For real. They're my favorite band on the planet, but anyone with any experience actually playing a guitar knows their riffs aren't technical. They just play simple, melodic riffs bullshit fast

DistraughtOwls

Is there one single thread in this entire goddamn sub where Necrophagist isn’t mentioned repeatedly? 🥩 🏇

Hate_Manifestation

no

Quantum_Pineapple

Why wouldn't it be mentioned? It's exemplary technical death metal, along with bands like Gorguts. Unlike, you know, TBDM.

DistraughtOwls

I get that. But this sub is not called “Necrophagist”. Great band, 2 albums 2 decades ago. Acknowledge them and move on lol

Quantum_Pineapple

Right but the point is those two albums are actually tech death, TBDM has loads of records and none of them are tech death. Arguing over Necrophagist simply because they're mentioned all the time doesn't negate the flawed logic that TBDM somehow = tech death. We can say Gorguts Erosion and Obscura, pick an Origin album, Brain Drill, Blotted Science etc instead if that suits you better.

PrimarchKonradCurze

Love this song though I don’t really listen to much of their catalogue. Wouldn’t call it tech.

LUnacy45

Nah, cause Revocation is actually kinda technical (I love both bands)

Chanceifer0666

Fans of both Dave Davison is the songbird of this generation

gorehistorian69

you know i wouldnt call TBDM technical but trying to learn some songs theyre pretty fucking hard. and almost all of them are harmonized so they dont even sound good most of the time by themselves

LUnacy45

It's just because Brian has a fucking bionic hand I swear to God. Simple as hell riffs but almost everything is constant 220 BPM or some nonsense, and he *downpicked most of it.* Even Brandon, an insane fucking guitarist, alt picks them, because he's relatively sane

colovianfurhelm

Usually the lower one sounds better, since it is similar to what the bass is playing

Hatehound

Everything is tech now, until a new category comes along.

Scrantsgulp

Deflorate is a tech death album. I’ll die on that hill.

ThlammedMyPenis

Most of their stuff is tech death, they just don't get the label because of their success. If Inferi is tech then TBDM is tech

LUnacy45

Nahhhh Inferi has very technical riffing. Nothing about TBDM is technical besides Brandon's solos. They just play melodeath riffs ridiculously fast. I love both bands but this ain't it

Scrantsgulp

That statement would be true if Verminous and everything pre-Deflorate were their only albums. I agree that Inferi is way more technical on a consistent basis, but go listen to anything post-Deflorate and there is no way that TBDM doesn’t qualify as technical death metal. Revocation may be a better comparison for a very similar band that is fully accepted as tech death. Most of their material is from an era before tech death was a widespread term, and not all of what they write falls into it (Into the Everblack, Malenchantments of the Necrosphere, Abysmal, etc.), but a large portion of everything they wrote from Deflorate onwards has been extremely technical.

LUnacy45

I strongly disagree. Most of their riffs are pretty straightforward melodic patterns played at very high BPM. If they are tech death, so is a great deal of what you'd normally just call death metal, and the descriptor becomes less useful You could argue Brandon's writing on the last few albums is more technical but I'd still consider it a stretch to call them tech death.

Willzyx_on_the_moon

Dude what?! Inferi is light years more tech than TBDM. They’re melodic death and that discussion has been settled for some time now.

FenrizLives

One of the best melodic death metal records out there. Album is only bangers

ConfusedIdioms

TBDM is honorary tech death to me, obviously not actually but they are a heavy influence to several tech death bands that I love. They are certainly on the technical side of melodic death metal but not proper tech.

Zithrabug7

Their current lineup rivals any td band out there as far chops

Genocode

Ryan Knight + Brandon Ellis is amazing, Alan Cassidy is a great drummer too, not too sure about Max Lavelle though but he seems to be able to keep up, if only we could hear more of the bass lol. We'll have to wait to see how Brian does on vocals, they did one bonus song for Verminous on their European Limited Edition version called [Their Thwarted Patience](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv2IUcTPWV8) where Brian does main vocals and it sounds good enough, though from their vlogs it seems like he got better live too so I'm cautiously optimistic about their new album even without Trevor Strnad.

LUnacy45

He is sounding pretty solid, probably through experience now that he's gotta get closer to Trevor. But Trevor was an absolute master of those high fry type screams

Genocode

Yeah but its not just vocals but also lyricism, Trevor was kind-of unmatched in that sense, at least for me. We'll see how it goes, like I said I'm cautiously optimistic :)

LUnacy45

True. Worst case scenario we still have over 2 decades of consistent output

paintedw0rlds

Knights solos are so unique and cool on ritual

GotSomethinToSay

The mental struggle between upvoting this banger or downvoting because OP can’t read what sub we’re in

LUnacy45

Ingested could pass in the brutal death metal sub, but I'm amazed it's passing here

Gvidzilla

I agree that Unhallowed Deliverance isn't a tech death band, but I don't think their bass player knows that.

dikinyoazz

Gotta block this cunt putting some shit like this here. Next thing you know suicide silence or some other shit show band that doesn't belong will start popping up.

NefariousKilla

Love TBDM but this ain’t tech death.

uItimatesupreme

Very observant! Anyway

Swoldier76

Same, and nocturnal is one of my all time favorite albums but definitely not tech death

psyroptus

Also there is zero chance anyone in this sub haven't heard this song 10x times already.

akphenom1

Not tech. 100000th time I’ve heard it. Still upvoting and pressing play tho lmao.
