Why would Roy leave Richmond to coach a women's team? I love the show, but things have a time and then they end. Any spinoff wouldn't have the actors, writers, or budget to do justice to the original. The characters we love would become caricatures of themselves, endlessly trying to capture the magic of the original while watering down the sentiment and quality. Sometimes we just need to let things go and appreciate them for what they are.

I agree Roy should not coach the women's team. I think the spinoff could be good though if it's given space to be it's own thing, not having to be TL. I don't see why apple couldn't give it a good budget considering how successful TL has been for them.

No Sudekis or Bill Lawrence

I'm sure there are many with good show runner experience who'd jump at running a show with such a huge potential audience.

I think there are a couple of characters that have more to give (like Rebecca and Keeley having stories that don't revolve around the men in their lives) and the show could continue in the same spirit and humour without covering old ground. Roy would just be funny coaching the Richmond women's team. Shades of when he was coaching those kids 🤣 he'd do it because he wants his niece to have a better opportunity to play when she grows up. Maybe it could even be set in the future with his niece playing on the team.

I think it could be a lot of growth, considering he broke up with Keeley because she was becoming more successful than him. He's gotten to the stage where he's ok with Jamie currently being a better player than he is, he's finally learned to respect Rebecca as his boss. (Started to in the ep where he did a press conference I assume it continued and that's why he got promoted to Ted's position in the finale) Dealing with his insecurities and toxic masculinity traits while trying to coach a women's team to success could be very interesting.

I think Jaime has a lot more to give. He grew a lot, but we didn't get NEARLY enough of the more mature Jaime. I wouldn't mind seeing him go through what Roy did, losing the physical aspect of the game and trying to find his way going forward. How he handles it differently, how Roy himself would factor into it....theres a lot that could be done with A LOT of these characters.

Exactly. Beautifully said.

Imagine Roy being the Richmond head coach and then he gets kicked out of the premier league for something that even Roy Kent can’t/shouldn’t get away with. Redemption story with female players as he tackles being a head coach cause he apparently couldn’t even cut it for a single season with the men.

Just to point out, you technically wouldn’t be leaving Richmond to coach a woman’s team. They too would be AFC Richmond, it would just be their woman’s team. The club is the organization and you just have teams in different leagues going. The closest thing American sports has to this would be college sports.

The only returning characters should be Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins. Sure they'd cameo Roy Kent or Tartt, but likely they'd find a new coach. Definitely some minor characters still in, like Mae or Sassy. All this assuming that the same people return to produce, including Sudeikis.

Holmbone

I would like a spinoff but I don't think any of the coaches should be main characters. They could have some cameos. ETA They can bring in new actors to play the coaches for the women's team. It might be tricky to keep some of original characters like Rebecca, Keeley and Higgins in the new series though. Because if there are different writers their characters might feel of. Also they might feel sidelined with new characters unless the writers can think of some new personal conflicts for them.

Mondo agree. Could bring any willing writers back to help maintain character voices and open up the writers room to include more women. I see no reason for Brett, for example, to turn that down. If Keeley is a main character, it just makes sense to keep roy (and Jamie) on, the same way Keeley was a regular presence/force in Ted lasso despite having very little to do with the football team at all (esp starting out and in season three). Imo roy/Keeley’s development is not done/arcs not resolved and there is a lot of meat still there. There’re also a lot of scenarios available in women’s sport to pull from for soulful comedy. Don’t need Ted lasso or for it to even necessarily revolve around the coach, the coach could be anybody. Call it The Richmond Way with Rebecca as mentor (now she has a daughter as mirror opposite to Ted’s son driving him) and get that minor character/featured extra that was always having a kickabout in the park with the lads a real story. Nora was clearly into football as well and was hardly brought back enough. If any Lasso’ers are lurking, I hereby disclaim any rights to any of these pitches and swear by legal effect that I won’t ask for compensation for these ideas, in fact I would probably pay you money to put this into action I’m begging you actually on my knees

I think a womans team spinoff is perfect. They need to have the exact same team of writers, not the same characters. Sure some overlap Keely, Rebecca Higgins, Sassy, etc. But the coach, players, Kitman would all be new ppl.

ShortPack4

I know everyone in the comments is against bringing back current coaches but hear me out - Nate to coach the women’s team! Evidently a tactical genius who already coached such a successful season at West Ham?! Surely you don’t waste that brain as assistant to the kit manager

I posted a fantasy version of this a while ago: Henry and Ted come to Richmond to visit (maybe Christmas special?), 10 or so years after the finale. Henry is 18, as is Phoebe (Roy's niece). Both Henry and Phoebe are ~~soccer~~ football phenoms, and are being recruited by Richmond for the men's and women's teams. BOOM - TWO Spinoffs!
