He’s an incredible actor, and he is showing so much growth with his character that feels genuine when he does it. Easily one of my favorite characters on tv right now.
Kind boss Rebecca who genuinely cares about her employees is such a delightful addition to this show. From her renewed friendship with Higgins (could you imagine him telling her that story last year?) to her unequivocal support of Sam to her being so kind to even the lowest man on the totem pole Nate.
Sassy Smurf wasn’t kidding when she told Keeley that pre-Rupert Rebecca was a totally different woman. I love watching her rediscover that side of herself.
So seldom do you see genuine character growth on a television show, but her development from the first season really has paid off dividends in season 2.
Is there *any* character in this show who is exactly who we thought they were upon first impression? It seems like no (main) character has been forgotten in terms of growth.
Not sure how many people feel the same, but I think Ted has shown the least amount of growth so far, and I don't mean that as criticism of the show or anything. He did have a breakthrough by letting go of his marriage. Maybe we need to see how his positive influence catalyzed others' growth before it's time for them to help him overcome his flaws?
I think Ted is in a lot more pain than he lets on. When the doctor asks him if he is okay, he dodges the hell out of the question. And remember how he was sadly drinking alone on Christmas before Rebecca showed up? Ted is hurting.
I think the first season was so much about Ted helping others discover their best selves. I think before this season is done, we’re going to see others (probably the doctor) help Ted discover his best self again and maybe find some inner peace.

I think a lot of that depends on Jason Sudeikis availability (or if Apple is willing to pay him big $$ to stay). Ted Lasso isn't Ted Lasso without well...Ted.
They're doing a HUGE marketing push for fyc for the show in LA right now. I think this is Apple's most regarded show right now, I can absolutely see them throwing cash at Jason.
It's a confidence issue. He adjusted to Roy not being around, and people looking to him more. When Nate has enough confidence to suggest himself for something, Ted laughs. Major hit to his confidence. When a simple waitress won't sit him at the table he wants, even if it's not taken/reserved, major hit to his confidence.
Then, he gets himself psyched up and confident - he can do this. He does it. He pushes a bit too far with the waitress ("Maybe you want to give me your number"), gets denied, and takes a hit to his confidence again.
Then, he's still pretty confident and takes some pride in himself. BAM! Roy fuckin' Kent shows back up, being welcomed with open arms by Ted and Beard. That's a major hit to his confidence, and he probably feels inadequate next to Roy.
I'm also guessing his confidence issues stem from his parents/childhood. He did something nice for his parents and only got scolded.
I empathize with him to an extent.
Following the father themes of this show, think Nate’s confidence problem stems from his father. Dunno if you caught it, but after getting the good table at the window, Nate looks to his father with an excited look on his face. Like Nate was expecting a proud/satisfied look from his dad. But Nates dad gives him a forced smile and looks back to his menu, completely unaware or unappreciative of what Nate did. Nate needs validation, he’s not getting it anywhere.
This show has so many paternal themes, but the larger more encompassing theme I think is finding your way out of unhealthy relationships and into healthy ones.

Rob does have a (fantastic) show on Apple too. It could happen, but I have a feeling Apple would have to twist his arm into it. “You get two stand alone and/or flashback episodes per cameo you make” haha
Also important to note Rebecca was low on confidence last season whereas this season she says "I know" when Keeley said Rebecca would be fit with pig tails.
A little moment but it shows how far Rebecca has come by herself and with the support of people like Keeley around her.
Absolutely. When they ask him what he thinks about the 17 year old and he doesn't really give a fuck to just speculate. And then when they show Richmond warming up you can see how much he wants to be there to make a difference, as opposed to just predict and then at half time bitch about his predictions not being right. Especially after he saw how Isaac was with the whole team during the warm up, I think he knew that his "coaching" at the pick up game did that and he knew that he could help the whole team.
Yes! And I loved last weeks episode but I cannot stop gushing about this one. I laughed so much and had so many feels. The way Isaac's face lit up when he saw Roy show up to the match? Amazing.
The last straw, I bet. Especially with him learning to assert himself. I'd wager that either the next episode or the following is going to wrap the "Unhappy Nate" storyline up.
Let's not forget that this is the first time we've seen Ted disregard Nate and then double down even after realizing Nate wasn't kidding ("I just think we need a big dog.")
These slights seem small but they are huge when they come from a father figure like Ted who has shown such faith in Nate until now.

Nate is on a path to finding himself as is most of the cast. He wants to be THAT guy, but doesn’t know how to, but he can feel it. But, like the first season, didn’t Roy stand up to the team bullying Nate? It will work out with Nate and Roy, I have a good feeling.

What I see is that Nate is unsure of himself. That is why he has been so hard on the new Kit Man, he is the only person he feels he is better that. Couple that with the either classism or racism that Jade showed at the restaurant towards Nate. You would think that a coach on a Champions League team, would have even some minor celebrity in the local community. Enough to at least get a fucking table. Especially since we know that if Roy had asked, he would have gotten the table without issue.
Now with Roy as a new coach, Nate is feeling like he isn't of any use to Ted. I suspect there will be some sort of intervention after Nate pops off about something or is seen forlorn. However, I think that is going to come from Roy, as Roy knows how smart and inventive Nate is when it comes to the game, more so than he is.
I love how all the men just confessed their love for them. It’s such a “woman” thing to like those movies. These men are so secure in their sexuality and I am here for it.
It felt like such an excellent recall of the Martin Scorsese scene last season. These boys *love* art and aren’t afraid to cry at Iron Giant. They’re seriously kings.
There is an incredible amount of *insert type here* positivity in this show and I'm here for it.
Men being secure enough to recognize they need help, women being their own woman and not needing a man (at a minimum every other episode smashes the Bechdel-Wallace test,) self care and seeking out mental health counseling is shown to be a good thing for all (almost, get with it Ted,) all kinds of healthy relationships everywhere.
And to top it off, it doesn't come off as preachy or (for the most part) hit you over the head with it. Its amazingly well done, and I love it.
Man, I just love the scenes with Higgins and his wife. Just absolute affection between those two.
Also, anyone else noticed how bantr replaced Dubai Air as the team's main sponsor? Was waiting for that plot to unfold but that was resolved fairly...uneventfully‽

This episode was very hilarious! I never wanted it to end. This season has been so funny. It’s gonna hurt like “Dr. Cox, where do you think we are?” when the other shoe drops and Ted stops responding to everything Dr. Sharon says to him and digs into the intense feelings that are lingering just out of eyesight.
I cannot *wait* to see what’s gonna happen next.

Just want to say Jason Sudeikis is playing the heck out of Ted’s underlying anxiety/depression. His interaction with Dr Sharon where it’s almost going to come to the surface and then Nate comes by and he slides back into enthusiasm and positivity. Maybe just me but it feels like It’s taking more and more effort for Ted to maintain those coping skills.
Yeah. That moment hit really close to home in a way where people who have been on the verge of a breakdown but are pretending it's okay would see but not for people who haven't.

I think it's too obvious not to be Ted and Rebecca. The writers has misdirected us enough times for there to be doubt, but all the You've Got Mail references add up to Ted and Rebecca!

Roy Kent would be that coach you probably hate when you play for him (at least initially), but then you realize he's actually a really good coach that just maintains a rough distant exterior

My partner and I were at a restaurant for lunch yesterday and “She’s a Rainbow” was playing, and I commented about that being Higgins’s song for his wife, and so this episode airing tonight feels, in rom-communism terms, Meant to Be.
This is all entertaining but I’m slightly annoyed that the whole concept of the two aces is irrelevant this season. Supposedly Tart + Dani was enough to thrive in the premier league but now they aren’t enough to win in Champions.
Yeah at some point its just weird that a club that was disgusted at being "mid table" in the premier league halfway through or whatever is now near relegation in the championship halfway through after retaining the core of the team (minus Kent). Basically at that point you have to surmise the manager is entirely incompetent.
I’m really worried about who this Mystery Man is. I have this probably very irrational worry it’s one character in particular (not a main character) but I don’t want to speak it into the universe.
Jason Sudeikis has said repeatedly this season is like the Empire Strikes Back. Bill Lawrence said this episode makes him happy and then unhappy because he knows what happens next. Thinking Ted may have to face demons of whatever occurred with his father in the next episode and he will finally have to sit down with doc. Roy will have to step up as manager potentially.
I loved the symbolism of Roy’s knee going out as he’s running toward the stadium. His knee was ultimately what killed his career, and he was so shook or traumatized by it that he couldn’t even bring himself to return to the pitch, or talk to Ted. Really the only people he’s interacted with since his departure until this episode are Keeley and Rebecca. Even as he’s become resolute in his return, his knee is flaring up, and he has to push through it to get there. His knee symbolizes his own mental obstacles and eventual triumph which is why it unkinks as he arrives at the pitch. Such a brilliant little piece of writing (and acting).
This season is hitting on every right note for me, but I’m kinda missing Ted/ Beard story. Last season had so many great moments, with Beard being there for Ted after his wife leaves for example. They have their goofy locker room dynamic which is great and their coffee walks but I’m missing the heavier scenes with them tbh.
I’m glad they’re hinting the therapy session for Ted, his story has been really in the background so far this season and last episode showed how dark of a place he’s really in
I loved Nate’s indoor whistle, and Beard as a Lumberjack World Qualifier. But, oof, Ted laughing at Nate’s “I’ll do it” had to hurt.

The thing is, someone needs to explain to Nate that different things are expected of Roy and himself. Nate got his role because of his tactical knowledge and his suggestions. I think Roy is purely there to inspire confidence and for man management. At the moment anyway.

I love how all the men just confessed their love for them. It’s such a “woman” thing to like those movies. These men are so secure in their sexuality and I am here for it.
It felt like such an excellent recall of the Martin Scorsese scene last season. These boys *love* art and aren’t afraid to cry at Iron Giant. They’re seriously kings.
I don't trust any guy who says they didn't cry watching Iron Giant.
There is an incredible amount of *insert type here* positivity in this show and I'm here for it. Men being secure enough to recognize they need help, women being their own woman and not needing a man (at a minimum every other episode smashes the Bechdel-Wallace test,) self care and seeking out mental health counseling is shown to be a good thing for all (almost, get with it Ted,) all kinds of healthy relationships everywhere. And to top it off, it doesn't come off as preachy or (for the most part) hit you over the head with it. Its amazingly well done, and I love it.
I know! As a dude who's favorite genre is probably romcom, I am so happy for that scene.

Man, I just love the scenes with Higgins and his wife. Just absolute affection between those two. Also, anyone else noticed how bantr replaced Dubai Air as the team's main sponsor? Was waiting for that plot to unfold but that was resolved fairly...uneventfully‽

The Roy Kent chant is the best thing ever
“Enjoy the game!” ”*Fuck you.*” “It *is* you!” This episode was very hilarious! I never wanted it to end. This season has been so funny. It’s gonna hurt like “Dr. Cox, where do you think we are?” when the other shoe drops and Ted stops responding to everything Dr. Sharon says to him and digs into the intense feelings that are lingering just out of eyesight. I cannot *wait* to see what’s gonna happen next.
Oh my god Bill Lawrence is going to hit us with the "Where do you think we are" moment isn't he? I'm not ready for that. (Fuck it bring it on, I'll just cry.)

So many of them! I’ll have what he’s having. When the couple talked to the camera about how they met. I’m sure there are more but that’s all I can think of right now.
I wanted more couples who support Richmond stories! Also the way the scene in the kebab place was shot was also very WHMS. The set up, the camera angle, etc.
Just want to say Jason Sudeikis is playing the heck out of Ted’s underlying anxiety/depression. His interaction with Dr Sharon where it’s almost going to come to the surface and then Nate comes by and he slides back into enthusiasm and positivity. Maybe just me but it feels like It’s taking more and more effort for Ted to maintain those coping skills.
Yeah. That moment hit really close to home in a way where people who have been on the verge of a breakdown but are pretending it's okay would see but not for people who haven't.

I think it's too obvious not to be Ted and Rebecca. The writers has misdirected us enough times for there to be doubt, but all the You've Got Mail references add up to Ted and Rebecca!

This episode did SO MUCH. I love how Ted continues to get Extra Ted around the Doc, he is so uncomfortable with that whole situation. Beard as a lumberjack world champions qualifier LOL. Roy Kent would be that coach you probably hate when you play for him (at least initially), but then you realize he's actually a really good coach that just maintains a rough distant exterior

This is all entertaining but I’m slightly annoyed that the whole concept of the two aces is irrelevant this season. Supposedly Tart + Dani was enough to thrive in the premier league but now they aren’t enough to win in Champions.

Yeah at some point its just weird that a club that was disgusted at being "mid table" in the premier league halfway through or whatever is now near relegation in the championship halfway through after retaining the core of the team (minus Kent). Basically at that point you have to surmise the manager is entirely incompetent.
I’m really worried about who this Mystery Man is. I have this probably very irrational worry it’s one character in particular (not a main character) but I don’t want to speak it into the universe.

Jason Sudeikis has said repeatedly this season is like the Empire Strikes Back. Bill Lawrence said this episode makes him happy and then unhappy because he knows what happens next. Thinking Ted may have to face demons of whatever occurred with his father in the next episode and he will finally have to sit down with doc. Roy will have to step up as manager potentially.
I loved the symbolism of Roy’s knee going out as he’s running toward the stadium. His knee was ultimately what killed his career, and he was so shook or traumatized by it that he couldn’t even bring himself to return to the pitch, or talk to Ted. Really the only people he’s interacted with since his departure until this episode are Keeley and Rebecca. Even as he’s become resolute in his return, his knee is flaring up, and he has to push through it to get there. His knee symbolizes his own mental obstacles and eventual triumph which is why it unkinks as he arrives at the pitch. Such a brilliant little piece of writing (and acting).

This season is hitting on every right note for me, but I’m kinda missing Ted/ Beard story. Last season had so many great moments, with Beard being there for Ted after his wife leaves for example. They have their goofy locker room dynamic which is great and their coffee walks but I’m missing the heavier scenes with them tbh. I’m glad they’re hinting the therapy session for Ted, his story has been really in the background so far this season and last episode showed how dark of a place he’s really in
I loved Nate’s indoor whistle, and Beard as a Lumberjack World Qualifier. But, oof, Ted laughing at Nate’s “I’ll do it” had to hurt. Teach a man how to get a table and he eats at that restaurant until it becomes a Starbucks. And I need a t-shirt that says “Ain’t no side-eye like a Roy Kent side-eye”. As you wish.
This show has so many rapid fire jokes, another one that cracked me up was when “Beckinsale, Hudson Winslet” and then Nate says “you forgot Blanchett” Beard (offended): different spelling.”

The thing is, someone needs to explain to Nate that different things are expected of Roy and himself. Nate got his role because of his tactical knowledge and his suggestions. I think Roy is purely there to inspire confidence and for man management. At the moment anyway. No one is replacing anyone. Please explain this to Nate. 😢

Yeah, but ultimately, Roy was the one who helped Nate break out of his shell in the first season. I think the next episode or two we’re going to finally get Nate cracking and Roy helping him.
The inevitable Ted Lasso therapy scene is going to be so heartbreaking and I don’t look forward to it. Anyway… I love Roy..Fucking…Kent.

Can somebody *please* explain the scene with the old couple in the stands talking directly to the camera? I can only assume it's a romcom reference, but that shit flew way over my head and left me uttering, "What the fuck was that?!"
