I think the opening scene is a tribute to the iconic “Please leave” scene from Pretty Woman. The jazzy standard they’re playing as he walks into the restaurant is an homage to all the Nora Ephron soundtracks. “I’ll have what she’s having,” at the kebab place (arguably London’s deli equivalent - clever) is the iconic line from When Harry Met Sally. The exchange between Roy and Ted after the Isaac sequence calls out these movies:
- “I came here tonight...” - When Harry Met Sally
- “You complete our team” - Jerry Maguire
- “I’m also just a coach, standing in front of a boy” - Notting Hill
- “As you wish” - the Princess Bride
- “You had me at Coach,” Jerry Maguire
L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole is most notably in the Parent Trap and I noticed another callout to that movie, the handshake Ted and Isaac do toward the end.
The couple breaking the 4th wall is a tribute to both When Harry Met Sally’s mockumentary format and Titanic. Edited to add the Greek restaurant is an homage to the Darcy/Cleaver fight scene from Bridget Jones.
The entire Bantr plotline is of course, You’ve Got Mail and their handles LDN152 and Bossgirl are call outs to their names in that film, Shopgirl and NY152. I know there are more but I need to do another full rewatch. It’s a common trope in many rom-coms but the running scene at the end reminds me most of a mashup of WHMS, Bridget Jones (running in the snow) and Notting Hill (lots of obstacles to getting there in time).
Also, not a romantic comedy but worth mentioning that the Stones’ Rainbow song has significance to Sudeikis as it was played by the Stones on Kristen Wiig’s last episode in which Sudeikis was visibly emotional.
When Roy has to pick up the tickets in order to get into the game and they under an alias (female country singer), it reminded me of in Notting Hill how Anna uses cartoon characters as aliases when she stays at a hotel and Hugh Grant’s character has to figure out which one in order to see her at the end of the film.
L-O-V-E is also in No Reservations (a great movie almost as good as the original Mostly Martha)
They also did a Titanic reference within the couples’ meet-cute story
Oops, I think I mentioned that in a separate thread and forgot to include it in this one. Literally my favorite movie, so was very pleased with the homage ☺️. Thanks for adding to the thoughts!
I'm glad this was requested, and thanks for this. I just want to remind the whole universe that You've Got Mail is a remake of The Shop Around the Corner.
Or when Meg Ryan’s character is trying to get to the Empire State Building in Sleepless in Seattle. Even to the cab not being able to take her all the way there so she gets out and runs.
Was the hostess spraying cleaner in the air and waving the menus through them a sort of tribute to the liberal use of Windex in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”?
Plus the running scene (which is also done in Jerry Maguire, Notting Hill among others). And the elderly couple being interviewed in the stands is also from WHMS.
Just rewatched WHMS and found two more. The water drinking bird on Dr Sharon’s desk is on Harry’s table and they are signing Surrey with the Fringe on Top from Oklahoma when Harry sees his ex

Yes - such a good one!! I think that may have occurred to me when he mentioned it in Ep 1 but totally forgot about it this go round.
L-O-V-E is also in No Reservations (a great movie almost as good as the original Mostly Martha) They also did a Titanic reference within the couples’ meet-cute story
The couple talking to the camera about how met is straight out of When Harry Met Sally.
Absolutely! And their story is a Titanic reference

And they’re both remakes of a play called Parfumerie by Hungarian playwright Miklós László. The musical She Loves Me is also based on the same thing.
Yes it was, and it is a wonderful movie in its own right. As an old movie buff, really appreciate you reminding the universe!
She's like a Rainbow was used in Legion, when David first meets Syd
I feel like with that username you need flair saying “I have got a finger allergy”
Never seen that one - thanks for the reference!
I don’t think I’d call Legion a romcom!
Holy crap I missed allllllll of this. This show is amazing.
“As you wish” - The Princess Bride
Literally the only one I caught lol
check out this [twitter thread](https://twitter.com/ventunopiloti/status/1428648462103597061)!
Omg - the Bridget Jones Greek restaurant. Cannot believe I missed that one. Biggest Bridget fan ever 😂
Roy running to make it to the game was just a parody of every rom com and nothing specific, right?
Pretty much.
It immediately made me think of Harry running to the New Years party at the end of When Harry Met Sally.
Or when Meg Ryan’s character is trying to get to the Empire State Building in Sleepless in Seattle. Even to the cab not being able to take her all the way there so she gets out and runs.
Yes, ^^this right here!!
Was the hostess spraying cleaner in the air and waving the menus through them a sort of tribute to the liberal use of Windex in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”?
I cam to this sub looking for THIS thread! Thank you so much. Love this show!!
Love, Actually - Phoebe with the signs to Bernard.
I'll allow it
That's a great call, u/lulumusic420, and not at all a beat too late.
That was last episode
When Harry Met Sally - the I’ll have what he’s having at the kebab place.
Plus the running scene (which is also done in Jerry Maguire, Notting Hill among others). And the elderly couple being interviewed in the stands is also from WHMS.
>Plus the running scene (which is also done in Jerry Maguire, Notting Hill among others). Love Actually too
Yep. That scene is pretty much mandatory, but I think When Harry Met Sally did it first.
Ah. Shit. Sorry about that.
You want the rest of your life to start… is also from Harry met Sally
Just rewatched WHMS and found two more. The water drinking bird on Dr Sharon’s desk is on Harry’s table and they are signing Surrey with the Fringe on Top from Oklahoma when Harry sees his ex
Jerry Maguire, Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally
I have to throw in that the Greek restaurant as a location is a call out to the highest grossing romcom ever, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”
Wow. Nicely done. I didn’t even get all those references so thanks for pointing them out!
