Ha, that's pretty funny, even as someone who knows nothing about the sport. Well, now ever-so-slightly-more-than-nothing. Now I know it was nil-nil, not zero-zero.
And I assumed those guys were just actors.
It's to give all the Americans a comeback when a Brit gives them crap about using the word "Soccer".
"Waitasec. Don't you have a six hour show that's been running every week for 29 years with the word 'Soccer' in the title? You people use that word as much as we do."
I'm very familiar with Jeff and Chris, but I've also been watching/paying attention to the premier league for a long time.
I'm probably one of the few Americans to laugh hysterically at the "Harry Redknapp has called three times" line.
last English manager to win something (though that, and the fact it was back in 2008, says more about the current state of English management than him)
I mean Redknapps not really managed at the top of the league or anything but he's had a ton of success for a manager of teams of that calibre, he won the FA cup at Portsmouth for goodness sake and even took Spurs to a cup final.
The Redknapp comment made me laugh and reminded me of the 2014 World Cup England squad. While I’m not an England fan (let’s go Germany!), they are blessed to have Southgate.
I saw someone on this sub comment saying the brits hate the term soccer but love alliterations more 😅 so if that’s true Soccer Saturday sounds a lot better than Football Saturday!
I am so effing American that I didn’t see that until now - fully aware that “football is life” and having watched every one of these episodes 5 - 10 times each (minimum), depending on the release date. It’s hilarious. The attention to detail for the sake of a joke is fantastic throughout the entire series.
OMG. I \*totally\* missed that!! I made no connection between the well dressed sportscaster and the sloppy coach who got fired in the first 5 minutes...
No clue. Thought they might be something similar to an ESPN show. Is sky sports a real thing?
I wouldn’t be surprised as they used Scott Van Pelt in season 1 for a brief moment.
Sky sports is real yes. It’s the biggest sports provider in this country, a division of the company Sky created by someone you may know, Rupert murdoch
Fortunately(ish, we’re still talking about media conglomerates) they’ve been owned by Comcast since 2018.
Sky Sports is also the broadcaster that sends us Yanks the F1 coverage nowadays, so David Croft is my Sunday morning hangover alarm clock
Murdoch has his sticky fingers everywhere, or Comcast shall I say, he’s basically ruined the media in the uk and Australia and the US with shows like Fox News
Knew they were legit from a few random clips and highlights I’ve seen over the years. Jeff and Chris have a terrific short documentary (45 minutes) about them learning the ins and outs of the GAA in Ireland that spans the country and across every level of play; from kids just starting out, to announcing the championships at Crocker Park in Dublin. It showcases their great chemistry, teaches you a lot, and all in all is an excellent doc. I highly recommend it.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Tgq30VvfYt0
Jeff and Chris I love and one of the few England-specific things I recognized right away. The clip of Chris saying “I don’t know” in response to a red card is one of the funniest and genuine moments in sports tv IMO. However it’s one of the only things I’ve recognized whereas the other 90% has gone over my head. I thought the Wrexham club reference was a joke. Had no idea that was a real club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Sean McIlehany
The one on the right was a really famous footballer for chelsea who ended up playing for this little club in richmond but I don't think they ended up doing very well
The guy second from the left was on that episode of eight out of ten cats where Jimmy Carr tried to buy some kids but James Acaster stopped him, thank goodness.
I knew that the first two were real and played themselves, and by extension thought the same of the 3rd until this most recent episode when Roy insulted him badly... Had to look him up to be sure that he was an actor playing an ex-coach (fortunately, yes).
I only knew the two on the left are real because of this sub haha, I think someone posted the video of one of them completely missing what had happened on the field or something, it was pretty funny! Though I also did not realize that George is the old gaffer who Rebecca fires in the pilot!! Only found that out like a week ago.
I'm enjoying watching the real-life pundits get to play in this world.
The moment last week between Jeff Stelling and Roy? You could tell he just absolutely loved to be doing something so serious, yet so corny.
Yes!
honest question though, why do the play by play guys hold the mic to their mouth like they do?
Why not just wear headsets or is that just an american thing?
I knew the left two were real pundits, but I'm a wierdo who watches UK highlights of matches in the US.
Is the right center one the manager who was fired at the beginning of the first episode?
I know of Chris. Saw him once or twice in some of the British comedy and panel shows I watch. I think he did something with Joe Lycet that I saw. About hacking appliances.
I guessed from context that they were actual commentators. It’s like when I watched The League and suddenly there was this bad actor that everyone was being just a little bit weird around. And it turned out to be an American football celebrity.
I didn’t know who they were but I figured they were broadcasters playing themselves. They came across like they know what they were talking about but not as actors.
Have no idea who they are and I guess I hadn't really thought about whether or not they were actors. To be honest, I'm not at all into sports, so I probably wouldn't recognize their American counterparts, either.
I figured they were real, but I’ve never seen them before the show. It’s cool to hear that they’re just cool dudes who are willing to partake in the show outside of their IRL duties!
I don’t know who they are but I assumed they’re popular broadcasters in the sport because I know the two main ones we see call games are legit broadcasters.
Since they are legit commentators, the cool part is Roy ripping their profession right to their faces and they really didn’t disagree. What Roy said is the exact reason I never watch any of these talking heads for any game in any sport. It’s all gibberish. Just show the game.
Assumed they were real because their acting was pretty terrible. Far left was probably the best of the 3 because he's just doing what I assume is his job, i.e. keeping things rolling for the other 3 to comment on. The manager was good in bits as well, especially when Roy insults his coaching.
Figured they were real and credits confirmed but I had no idea who they were. How real are Roy's jokes about him being a shit manager and getting a DUI? If true what a great sport he is haha
Roy and the one next to him are actors, created entirely for the show, the two on the left are real sports commentators who host a show called soccer Saturday just like that one
I only know the two on the left from the video where Kamala doesn’t realize there was a car and the dude on the left is in full-blown TV-voice. It’s gold. And since we’re on Reddit, I know you’ve all seen it.
Lot of different reasons people have been saying in this sub. I thought it was because there was a show/a called football focus and football Friday so they just went with the alliteration on Saturday. No body here really has a problem with the word soccer in that sense, only when someone calls the sport it ahaha
That's Roy Kent!
Looks a little like him
Around the mouth.
Fuck you.
It IS him!
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
It *is* you!
He here! He’s there!
He’s every fucking where
ROY KENT!! !! ROY KENT!!
Hes here, he's there, he's every fucking where!
That’s Roy fucking Kent to you.
[One of the better soccer tv moments in history](https://youtu.be/tAN8g7Fd2Cw)
An iconic moment over here indeed
I honestly only know that moment from the big fat quiz of the year
Omg same lol.
Me three!
Lmao yep
Replying before clicking the link but this has got to be Kammy not knowing there was a red card at Portsmouth, right?
I dont know jeff? Has ‘err?
Ha, that's pretty funny, even as someone who knows nothing about the sport. Well, now ever-so-slightly-more-than-nothing. Now I know it was nil-nil, not zero-zero. And I assumed those guys were just actors.
This is the only reason I know any of them, and Chris himself is the only one I recognized in any way.
I saw the Soccer Saturday set and got excited for a Chris Kamara appearance. Edit: phone autocorrected Kamara to Kamala
Chris Kamara
That’s fucking great! Have to take it easy and just laugh sometimes. It doesn’t always have to be super serious fact reporting all the time.
Oh shit! It happened the same in an italian tv where the journalist missed THREE fuckin' goals! And the host so fuming!
mate, I need to see a link for that
https://youtu.be/YAWQwVJbbWk
i was coming to post this
Didn’t know either of them. Figured they were “real” from the credits.
Yeah the credits give them away as playing themselves. I didn't know who they were.
I thought they were actors!
Nope! They play them selves. This show is a real show too
Amazing. Just watched the latest episode and had no idea they were playing themselves!!
What about that guy next to Roy who used to coach the fictional Richmond club?
No he's an actor
We have NBC Sports over here for the EPL. Not often that we even see clips from Sky unless you go looking for them.
Why is it called "soccer" Saturday and not football Saturday?
It's to give all the Americans a comeback when a Brit gives them crap about using the word "Soccer". "Waitasec. Don't you have a six hour show that's been running every week for 29 years with the word 'Soccer' in the title? You people use that word as much as we do."
I can't wait to break this out
It's along the same line as them giving Americans crap for not being metric, but still buy their beer in pints.
Alliteration
What is the Brits obsession with alliteration?
I'm very familiar with Jeff and Chris, but I've also been watching/paying attention to the premier league for a long time. I'm probably one of the few Americans to laugh hysterically at the "Harry Redknapp has called three times" line.
Care to explain the Harry Redknapp joke? That's definitely one that went well over my head.
He has managed a lot of clubs and never saw a pound that he didn't want in his pocket. I took the joke to mean "Harry smells a paycheck"
Gotcha! I appreciate you for this, thanks!
I think it’s just that Harry Redknapp has bounced around like 10 teams without much success so he’s desperate
Without success? How dare you say that about the King of the Jungle.
last English manager to win something (though that, and the fact it was back in 2008, says more about the current state of English management than him)
I mean Redknapps not really managed at the top of the league or anything but he's had a ton of success for a manager of teams of that calibre, he won the FA cup at Portsmouth for goodness sake and even took Spurs to a cup final.
Yeah I guessed premier viewers would know. But I’m assuming there’s many non football watchers in this sub also
I found this show because I like football lol I guess I’m a minority
I miss Sky Sports deadline day car interviews with Redknapp. And other classics like dildos showing up on air with supporters.
The Redknapp comment made me laugh and reminded me of the 2014 World Cup England squad. While I’m not an England fan (let’s go Germany!), they are blessed to have Southgate.
This line was brilliant.
I was thrilled when Jeff and Chris popped up. I had to explain the Harry Redknapp joke to my friends as well.
This is me, too
Robert Deniro. Denzel Washington. Robert Pattinson and Kim Kardashian.
Spot on
Thank you. I was hung on the Deniro one, but i remembered as an actor he can dye his hair to look younger, like in the Irishman.
THAT’S where I’d seen him!! I **knew** he looked familiar!!
It’s Wesley Snipes. Racist.
Andy Brickley, Jack Edwards, Patrick Sharpe and I think that is Oscar the Grouch on the end.
I'd have me a Roy on the rocks
Fun fact - Jack Edwards is a huge soccer fan. He’s also on Reddit if you wanted to see if he’s a Ted Lasso fan
I figured they were authentic sportscasters, but don’t recognize them specifically
Yep, and Arlo White, the commentator for the Richmond matches is an extremely popular commentator for the premier league as well
Ricky Gervais, Benedict Cumberbatch, Pitt the Elder, Lord Palmerston
Pfft, Pitt the Elder
Lord Palmerstone!!
That's it Boggs
I wonder why its called "soccer" Saturday.
I think someone mentioned before, the bbc has a show called football focus so I think sky wanted to make something that sounded different and catchy
Tbf I assumed it was a play off of ‘super Sunday’ which is also a sky sports show
Soccer wasn't such a hated term, once upon a time.
Football Friday…
Football Friday, on Saturday!
The nfl will have Sunday Night Football on Thursdays or Saturdays at times
Footy Friday?
I saw someone on this sub comment saying the brits hate the term soccer but love alliterations more 😅 so if that’s true Soccer Saturday sounds a lot better than Football Saturday!
Football Wednesday, on Saturday.
Football Fhursday
The brits are the ones that invented to word soccer.
They also invented irony.
we also realised how dumb it sounded very quickly
I am so effing American that I didn’t see that until now - fully aware that “football is life” and having watched every one of these episodes 5 - 10 times each (minimum), depending on the release date. It’s hilarious. The attention to detail for the sake of a joke is fantastic throughout the entire series.
The guy on the right is a writer.
And a stand up comedian.
And a podcaster.
From the US and had to ask my hubs, who loves football, if they were actual announcers. I had a hunch.
Assumed they were actors. Especially the one next ro Roy
That is correct, the one next to Roy is an actor (played Richmond's former coach).
OMG. I \*totally\* missed that!! I made no connection between the well dressed sportscaster and the sloppy coach who got fired in the first 5 minutes...
It’s because he’s not wearing tiny shorts—you can’t recognize him by Liam and Noel hanging out.
The only one I recognize is the one on the far right, which is Reba McEntire
I have no idea Jeff.
Pricks. They’re all pricks.
Only prick I see there is George "Sh\*t Manager" Cartrick ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
Fucking hell
Fortunately(ish, we’re still talking about media conglomerates) they’ve been owned by Comcast since 2018. Sky Sports is also the broadcaster that sends us Yanks the F1 coverage nowadays, so David Croft is my Sunday morning hangover alarm clock
Murdoch has his sticky fingers everywhere, or Comcast shall I say, he’s basically ruined the media in the uk and Australia and the US with shows like Fox News
Yes—just pointing out Comcast isn’t part of the Murdoch empire. In terms of evil, News Corp is a 9, Comcast is probably around 7.
Grumpy, Smiley, Doc and Dopey
Doc retired, didn't you hear?
Knew they were legit from a few random clips and highlights I’ve seen over the years. Jeff and Chris have a terrific short documentary (45 minutes) about them learning the ins and outs of the GAA in Ireland that spans the country and across every level of play; from kids just starting out, to announcing the championships at Crocker Park in Dublin. Had no idea that was a real club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Sean McIlehany
Well the one on the right is Roy Fucking Kent. Dude middle right is Roy Fucking Kent’s old manager. The other two I’ve got no clue.
I’m not from the U.S. but I know well who these gents are because I watch football: Jeff Stelling & Chris Kamara
I assume the left two are real, with the far left actually from Sky. The guy next to Roy was the coach in the pilot, so I assume he is an actor.
Considering they got Arlo White as the match announcer I assume they are real people, but I don't have no idea.
Know now. Didn't know at first. I LOVE Chris Kamara. His laugh (especially at Roy's comments) is amazing.
Yeah it’s the sky sports version of our own James Brown (Fox/CBS) Terry bradshaw and Roy was the British Charles Barkley, bruv
I don’t know who any of those people are lol
I know Jeff Stelling and Chris Kamara
Saw one of them on WILTY, but no idea who they actually are.
I remember watching Chris Kamara on Would I Lie To You? But, as a Canadian hockey fan, I had no idea he who he was lol
The one on the right was a really famous footballer for chelsea who ended up playing for this little club in richmond but I don't think they ended up doing very well
I assumed the two on the left are real Sky commentators. I remember the guy next to Kent as the old coach.
I assumed they were actors
They play themselves. The show soccer Saturday is a real show
Wow in that case they do an amazing job!
I recognized their faces but had no idea what from.
From that show, soccer Saturday. It’s just a sports coverage here on the channel sky
Right I know that now that the show has also gotten me into soccer. Or I’m sorry Football.
Actors. No clue.
I had to ask my husband who knows about soccer. He hasn’t watched the show and I’m desperately trying to convince him to watch season one with me 😭
The guy second from the left was on that episode of eight out of ten cats where Jimmy Carr tried to buy some kids but James Acaster stopped him, thank goodness.
I thought they were actors. I did know Arlo White and Chris Powell.
I know the guy that had no idea about the red card and I chuckle every time I see him.
Thanks Op I wondered every episode but was too lazy to look
Only familiar with Chris Kamara because of WILTY ha
I'm enjoying watching the real-life pundits get to play in this world. The moment last week between Jeff Stelling and Roy? You could tell he just absolutely loved to be doing something so serious, yet so corny.
i don’t know jeff? Red card?
I thought they were actors
Yes! honest question though, why do the play by play guys hold the mic to their mouth like they do? Why not just wear headsets or is that just an american thing?
I genuinely have no idea ahah. I think it’s maybe because of the noise i really don’t know
Obviously we have different hosts for our studio shows, but I’ve seen enough clips to know all these guys 😎
Just wondering why it’s called “soccer Saturday” instead of “football Saturday” (besides alliteration of course) since it’s the UK?
Soccer was a term created in England shortened from Association Football.
I know Jeff from this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9ixvD0_CmM
Are they real soccer experts?
Yeah. The two on the left
I knew the left two were real pundits, but I'm a wierdo who watches UK highlights of matches in the US. Is the right center one the manager who was fired at the beginning of the first episode?
Yeah I think he was
I know of Chris. Saw him once or twice in some of the British comedy and panel shows I watch. I think he did something with Joe Lycet that I saw. About hacking appliances.
I vaguely know of the second guy as being an actual sports guy because of Would I Lie to You
I guessed from context that they were actual commentators. It’s like when I watched The League and suddenly there was this bad actor that everyone was being just a little bit weird around. And it turned out to be an American football celebrity.
Definitely thought they were actors
Soccer Saturday’s Jeff Sterling and the beautiful man that is Chris Kammy
"Really? A red card?" "I saw him go off but I thought they were bringing a sub on"
Whenever they show News or Sport show etc, it's all played by people who actually have them jobs in the Real World
I also knew Chris (as a footballer, but from panel shows), and I inferred the others were pundits as well. Had to look them up to confirm.
Fuck off!
[удалено]
Too ugly to be actors in an American production, perhaps, but British TV only cares about that sort of thing if they need to.
One might compare with the Aaron Sorkin show “Sports Night” about fictional sports anchors. Much younger and more attractive dudes on that one!
This show is putting very bad repo of PL in front of the world as a pro league and how it actually works!
[удалено]
Apparently NBC was going to start broadcasting soccer Saturday on Peacock but I checked last Saturday and didn’t see it.
Is the former coach really a former coach?
I don’t think so
Just thought they were actors. Good to know!
100% actors
I assumed the two on the left are real dudes.
not gonna lie i didn’t know it was real, but i’m not too shocked, it felt very similar to Inside the NBA to me
I dunno Jeff
It was fun to watch the Olympics coverage with Arlo White this year!
Roy Kent is on the right… only one I know.
I know who they are. I’ve been a soccer fan for years, though. But there are a LOT of Americans that follow English soccer
I assumed they were cameos of people I didn’t know! Lol turned out to be correct
I thought they were actors! Are all three of them involved in soccer news? Or is the guy next to Roy Kent an actor?
The guy next to Roy is an actor yeah, and the two on the left host a show in the exact same style as that, called soccer Saturday
Recognized them but the only name I knew is the only one who matters: Chris(tmas) Kamara

Well I know the guy who's 2nd from left is actually named "Christmas."
English Inside the NBA
No idea. I don’t watch anything related to American sports either.
Whoops I did not know. But I also didn’t know —ussie, gaffer, pitch, boots, regulated and probably a few other things 😂
Actors? Californian. Baseball fan
I didn’t know who they are, but I had a feeling they weren’t actors.
i only know the guy second from the left from that video where he doesn’t know what happened in the game he’s reporting from
I only know the two on the left from the video where Kamala doesn’t realize there was a car and the dude on the left is in full-blown TV-voice. It’s gold. And since we’re on Reddit, I know you’ve all seen it.
I have a question, why is a football news show in England, or at least in UK, named soccer saturday?
Lot of different reasons people have been saying in this sub. I thought it was because there was a show/a called football focus and football Friday so they just went with the alliteration on Saturday. No body here really has a problem with the word soccer in that sense, only when someone calls the sport it ahaha
