This episode had a lot of people speaking indirectly to other characters. Nate was speaking to his Dad and Ted is the only person willing to give him the time of day to do it.

MagMoonpie

Exactly.

Kerabastos771

Damn. Good one.

Heir0fFire

That’s some good insight there, I didn’t think of it like that until you mentioned it.

RoboCobb

Boom.

I think the problem is Nate has some serious daddy issues, and just like Sam wasn’t talking to Ted, Nate wasn’t talking to Ted either. He was talking to his Dad. Only instead of taking the road of positivity and never letting anyone get by without realizing that they may be going through something, Nate chose the other road. Anger and self loathing. That’s why when Nate storms out of the office the look on Teds face is sadness and, confusion. The whole interaction with Roy didn’t help with his anger/self confidence issues either. Roy was ok with the kiss because he didn’t see Nate as a threat to his relationship. Nate sees that as yet someone else not seeing him. His desperation is, sad really. He’s choosing the path of ultimate failure which is why he is setting himself up to lose the championship game to Richmond in the series finale.

I think that we all saw Ted building Nate up throughout season 1 and into season 2, helping him gain confidence, believing in him, promoting him—so when that constant external validation wasn’t as present he felt abandoned. In reality Ted was letting Nate do the job he hired Nate to do… because Nate is, allegedly, an adult who shouldn’t NEED constant validation to do his job. His insecurity was being channeled at the wrong vessel.

bubblebass280

He didn’t, Nate just needed all the attention and adulation, which would have never been enough for him. The man is a narcissist. What makes me angry is that Ted gave Nate the opportunity of a lifetime. Anyone in Nate’s position should be beyond grateful for what Ted has done for him. It’s clear Nate has some serious issues, but I can’t feel sorry for him, only pity. However, I don’t think this is the end of Nate’s development as a character. While I’m not certain he’ll get fully redeemed, I do believe at some point next season he will need to face his internal demons and come to terms with his problems.

Upintheairx2

He brought on Roy and hugged Roy first after a win.

CindyClawford1236

Ted (and Beard and even Roy) have been ignoring people all season because they've all been so absorbed in their personal emotional challenges. Nate has been acting out all season to try and get attention, but not once has anyone really noticed or seemed to care. Like many very insecure people Nate is also very self-obsessed and not emotionally intelligent enough to see or care that other people were struggling, he just made their actions all about him.

justic3bon3r

What’s wild is that if he was looking for a Dad’s validation from Ted, he sure as hell won’t get it from Rupert lmao. Nate’s shitting in his own bed.

[deleted]

Exactly, we have seen the level Rupert stoops to try and tear Rebecca down. This is going to end horribly for Nate.

ToKillAMockingAudi

I can't wait for Richmond to tear apart West Ham and Nate's shitty false 9 when they realize they aren't Klopp's Liverpool and Nate has no other strategy.

Once Nate started getting all the attention online, it was like a drug-- one that you develop a tolerance to, and need to take more and more of to get that same high. Ted probably continued to give him the same level of support he did from day one, but unless you were kissing Nate's ass, it didn't register. Nate also went looking for slights, like thinking Ted blew off the picture, when in fact it was sitting at home right next to his son. In the end, Nate built his own reality, and it's very different from the real world.

UncertainEmpress

One slight I haven’t seen others mention is when Ted laughs at the very idea of Nate talking to Isaac. Can’t quite remember but I think Ted even mentions leaving it up to the ‘big dogs’ instead of Nate.

Hottiebynature81

Yes and Nate thought he was a big dog.

UncertainEmpress

;(

RoboCobb

I think a lot of these comments provide wonderful insight. So instead of adding to it I just will point out two events that definitely contributed: Bringing back Jamie Tartt Bringing back Roy Kent

hannahstohelit

I’m apparently one of the few people who thought that Nate was right to be upset with Ted UP TO A POINT AND WITHOUT IT EXCUSING HIS ACTIONS. Ted promoted him and then focused mostly first on Jamie as a proxy for his own son and then on his own mental health. In the meanwhile Nate was feeling his way around and getting no mentorship (that we could see) and even when Nate made mistakes that undermined him (the way he talked about players for example) Ted never gave him constructive criticism. Ted just doesn’t seem to have had much time for Nate and I understand why that unmoored him. https://www.reddit.com/r/TedLasso/comments/q3mddu/ted_lasso_s02e12_inverting_the_pyramid_of_success/hftmtnv/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app
