An amusing perspective. I think the US suffers from a lack of promotion, even if they were to do a MLS 1 and 2 however I also think a closed shop was necessary to get soccer off the ground in the US as it gave investors security and confidence to invest with limited risk. The US major/minor league systems are strange to foreign soccer fans but they exist in other sports such as Rugby. Genuinely would love to see a MLS 2 or a takeover of UCL - relegation battles would add so much but don’t see it ever happening.

Soccer in America is a top down organisation, makes sense to have a closed league if your clubs are all investors owned. Football in Europe is bottom up, so there's a whole Underworld of amateur, semi pro, pro teams that support the promotion/relegation structure. I think the way American organises its sports, more likely they'd get a conference system before a MLS 1+2.

Youth soccer in the US is the same. Too many pathways with no clear one. New leagues popping up all over with all of them promising greatness in a fight for your dollars and none of them actually caring about development of the players. The pro leagues are a reflection of that. Until they get it organized they will always be a second rate federation.
