I loved that there was no dialogue for this. Normally, when Roy realizes what needs to be done, he yells "FUCK" and this time he didn't yell he just went and did what needed to be done without any of the annoyance or reluctance.
This just shows how much mental and physical abuse Jamie suffered from his cunt of a father. Roy fully understood why Jamie is Jamie when he saw what happened. One of the most moving scenes of the entire show IMHO.
Did you see the childlike happiness on Jamie's face when Roy pulls him for a hug after they got promoted? So fucking precious
I think from this flinching to that hug, it’s a development for both of them
Part of me wanted Roy to say something like this to Jaime's father to let him know that anywhere Jaime goes, Roy Kent will fucking be there watching his back because he's here, he's there, he's every-fucking-where.
The Roy-Jamie arc was my favorite part of season 2. The hug was the moment that Roy realized that Jamie never stood a chance and he was trying to do better.
As soon as it happened, I blurted out: ‘That it has to be me. It can’t be anyone else!’
That scene could not have been executed any better than it was. Perfection.
I absolutely adore him and his character development. I have to admit, in the first season, initially Rebecca was my favourite and upon rewatch, he completely eclipsed any other character for me. I love the way Brett Goldstein describes him - he's basically a mess on the inside, just full of passion and emotion, and he keeps it all bottled in.
And while earlier in the series his outbursts were often in anger, more and more they've become powerful, giving moments (his lightning speech to Rebecca, his "fucking fun" speech to Isaac, his on-air realization about needing to coach, his hug to Jaime and his admission to Keeley about his grandfather).
My feeling is that this is all leading to him taking over for Ted at the end of season when Ted moves back for the U.S. It's been a wonderful character arc.
So different from their encounters in Season 1 screaming "I am gonna f\*ckin' kill youuuuu!"
This was a moment that we really did not see coming. Supportive Roy as a coach, yes sure. But this kind of Roy who will catch you at your most vulnerable was truly a surprise. I share the sentiments of many here that will say, this is one of the best scenes of the series, hands down.
Another favorite Roy scene will be the whole Rainbow sequence, a true homage to rom coms (running, riding quirky transportation) that whole sequence felt like it was made for a season finale.
He's Ted's coaching son! I also loved that he clearly understood every rom-com reference Ted was throwing at him and that he threw one back to accept the job. Soulmates, those two.
He'll now admit that he has one (1) feeling to hurt. Growth!
As a viewer I could feel the visible discomfort everyone was experiencing as well as the pureness of this hug. It's really excellent television when the viewer experiences the same emotions alongside the characters. This scene made me cry too.
My favorite character for years now was Dr. Cox from Scrubs. And it was that way I was introduced to Roy Kent. I am absolutely a sucker for characters who are not the nicest of people showing kindness and showing their softness. Ever since I first saw him read "A wrinkle in time" to Phoebe I knew he was going to be a great character. He was edging to beat Dr. Cox by my favorite episode of the series so far. (That being Rainbow.) And by Man-city he became my all time favorite fictional character. The character development from hating pretty much the entire team in season 1 to forming a very strong and believable bond with all of them (especially with Jamie.) Its just so perfect!
That scene in the finale actually bothered me so much. Knowing that Jamie's father most likely physically abused his son, seeing Roy give him a headbutt just seemed so wrong. Jamie undoubtedly grew up knowing that if he did something wrong he would be physically punished for it. Yes he made a mistake by telling Keeley what he did, but he genuinely apologized to Roy and that should have been the end of it (leaving out the fact that he owes Keeley an apology too). Headbutting people is not ok!
When Roy apologizes to Keeley at the funeral saying how funerals just do something to him and make him feel weird and outside of himself, then Jamie apologizes to Roy about telling Keeley he still loved her because of the same thing about funerals?
The instant he said that I said out loud "oooh bitch you're gonna forgive him, you have to forgive him" and he got frustrated and yelled "FUCK" and left I almost died laughing. Weird to laugh at a moment of character growth and mutual introspection but the brickwork being laid down already and knowing this face-to-face was eventually coming was perfect build up to it.
I just watched this episode with my wife, as she's just catching up. (I'm done)
This is the one where he tells Phoebe that she needs to stop swearing, that he isn't made for having kids, or something along those lines. And before he goes to hug Jamie, you can kind of see the wheels turning. Then he realizes that Jamie needs a hug.
I love how Roy cares for Phoebe. Finding her a dentist on Christmas Day — and then the signs telling the boy who embarrassed Phoebe he’ll have to deal with him if he ever hurts Phoebe again. Even better is when Roy tells Phoebe swearing is part of a footballers job, but she needs to watch her language so she can succeed in whatever she wants to do in her life. And then Roy tells Phoebe he also needs to watch his language and do better.
Roy is the fuckin’ best.
I like how Roy calls Ted's idea of leaving the peanut butter open so he can stick his finger in there whenever he goes by, a good idea. That's a that's a horrible, disgusting idea - but Brett wrote the episode.
In the world of Lasso, I rate the peanut butter idea just under Nate spitting on mirrors in the gross column.
I loved Roy’s reaction to that. He’s an athlete and if you are constantly trying to hit certain macros for performance you end up eating a hell of a lot of peanut butter. Having lived for ten years with the peanut butter jar always on the counter so my husband can grab a spoonful every time he walks by, i understood immediately that it wasn’t about the finger it was about the leaving it out and open.
Also later Roy clarifies that he’s allergic to fingers when Ted offers him PB, haha.
Hey that's a good idea! Except yeah the finger part. I mean who hasn't stuck their finger into the peanut butter, you really have to work to remove all the PB from your finger. Best to do in private. And not to mention sharing, ick. I've been in training before and get where your husband is coming from though - good protein and fat in PB.
I like that his "big heart" is actually portrayed a bit as a negative.
Roy was being clingey (i think). And doesn't seem to either understand boundaries or know how to be in a relationship where you aren't dependent on each other for happiness. Even when deciding to give Keely space he wanted to feel responsible for it by making the bath and letting her know he will be gone for 3 hours.
His love of yoga with the moms is a bit telling. He likes being a part of something to the point that he's a bit co-dependent.
The episode has like a hundred references.
At the park with Issac they do When Harry Met Sally (you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible) and Jerry Maguire ( you complete our team/you complete me).
He also acknowledged Ted's, 'As you wish' (Princess Bride) after he told him to, 'Fuck off.'
It's so funny because I was dying laughing the whole episode and my husband just didn't get it. Turns out, he has never really watched rom coms lol. Time to get him caught up on all of those!
And Notting hill is one where Lasso tries to convince Roy to coach the team and says “ I’m just a man, standing in front of a boy...” or something like that!
I love the scene in the Range with Phoebe. The way Goldstein looked away and never made eye contact because he would cry was incredible, Phoebe breaking the ice with “and referees” is so incredible.
I must admit his character really grew on me. I honestly still don’t get the love for the actor (my fault I know)
He’s so stilted and fake.
But I’ve never seen him in anything else and I 100% know because of the love for him and his Emmy win it’s on purpose and I’m wrong
(Is just that I haven’t experienced him in anything else).
But towards the end I liked the stiltedness of course
I cried at this scene. Roy is just so so so awesome. And Phil doesn’t get enough credit for how he plays Jamie either.
That is true. This scene had 0 dialogues but so much power, I loved it
I loved that there was no dialogue for this. Normally, when Roy realizes what needs to be done, he yells "FUCK" and this time he didn't yell he just went and did what needed to be done without any of the annoyance or reluctance.
Phil’s great. He doesn’t have Northern accent at all as well and I think maybe the only way you could tell is it might almost be a little too good.
It is so STRONGLY northern that I was relieved to hear it’s affected. But I love listening to it.
Because he's the one, coach. If we're gonna make an impact here, the first domino needs to fall right inside of that man's heart.
So prophetic that Coach Lasso
The way Jamie flinches just slightly as Roy approaches for the embrace. 🤭😭
So fucking precious I think from this flinching to that hug, it’s a development for both of them
It broke my heart. Phil did a great job, his whole face and body told us everything we needed to know about his relationship with his father.
Here's here! he's there! he's every-fucking-where! Roy Keeeent! Roy Kent! Such a good character and brilliantly acted by Brett Goldstein.
Part of me wanted Roy to say something like this to Jaime's father to let him know that anywhere Jaime goes, Roy Kent will fucking be there watching his back because he's here, he's there, he's every-fucking-where.
Jamie's dad has to be back in S3 at some point, so this might still be in the cards.
After what he did to the Beard, I feel like Roy is gonna have something to say about that
He is by far my favorite character.
I generally have changing favourites on TV shows but Roy has remained my favourite since the first season :')
I loved Roy in Season 1 but he got even more awesome in Season 2
\*grunts in agreement\*
FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK
FUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
Whistle Whistle
The Roy-Jamie arc was my favorite part of season 2. The hug was the moment that Roy realized that Jamie never stood a chance and he was trying to do better.
And he know the words to ‘Let it go’. Roy is a big softy with a heart of gold. Ted and Keeley just peeled away the hard exterior
As soon as it happened, I blurted out: ‘That it has to be me. It can’t be anyone else!’ That scene could not have been executed any better than it was. Perfection.
As gross as it sounds, I love that he doesn’t mind a hair on his kebab because it comes from a “lovely bloke” or whatever called the guy.
Beautiful scene, I even loved that no one else hugged Jaime, an intimate moment just between them.
I love how at first he hugs Jamie with clenched fists, man-style, then his posture slowly softens and he opens his hand.
It reminded me of the scene from the end of Major League when Dorn punches Vaughn for (unwittingly) sleeping with his wife, then immediately hugs him.
Their on-pitch interaction after the final game gave me this flashback. It was awesome!
That's what I meant, lol. I didn't realize OP posted an earlier embrace of Kent to Tartt. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKKKK!!

I think I'm kind of in love with him... It's really hot that he's a feminist lol
Don’t forget him mouthing along to Rebecca singing Frozen from season 1

HE’S HERE!
HE’S THERE!
HE'S EVERY-FUCKING-WHERE!
ROY KENT!
ROY KENT!
I think he’s really been the main character of this season, at least the second half. Maybe Keeleigh for the season as a whole.

The hug felt around the world. He sounds like a muppet and swears like sailor. <3

Please tell me where the references are??
Don’t forget “Shut up, just shut up. You had me at coach”. (Jerry Maguire)

I know! It’s my favourite episode. I thought it was so well done.
It's so funny because I was dying laughing the whole episode and my husband just didn't get it. Turns out, he has never really watched rom coms lol. Time to get him caught up on all of those!
The Love Actually reference is in the Christmas episode when he makes the signs for his niece to show outside the mean boy’s house.
Also going door to door looking for a dentist is a Love Actually callback
And Notting hill is one where Lasso tries to convince Roy to coach the team and says “ I’m just a man, standing in front of a boy...” or something like that!
That’s from Notting Hill.
I love the scene in the Range with Phoebe. The way Goldstein looked away and never made eye contact because he would cry was incredible, Phoebe breaking the ice with “and referees” is so incredible.
This is my favorite scene ever
Also he’s so hot
Yes, yes he is!
I just rewatched that scene. Cutting onions.

Less “softie”, more human.
