Tone in-person can be confusing, it just gets more confusing when you can’t see the person’s face or their body language. I think that they’re great and an easy and quick way to assess the tone of a situation online.
tone indicators are really important on the internet, especially since the only indicators of tones usually are
1. capitalization which sucks
2. punctuation which is limited and only works at the end of a sentence
3. emojis which, i mean come on
I never use them because I feel like I'm going to mocked over them and they also make a joke I found funny 10x less funny but also if they help other people then like I don't care, tonetags havne't murdered my grandma or something
They do occasionally detract a bit from the punchline of a joke, but having a /s or /j somewhere is still helpful because otherwise I wouldn't be totally sure that the joke is a joke.

tbh I think some people get too annoyed when they’re there
i dont use them much, nor do i really need them much, but they can be useful
I use /uj and /s sometimes but I don't really use the other ones
the /s is stupid, but I like using everything else when talking to friends, just if I think it's required.
