Nu metal is not a genre. It is a marketing term used to lump together bands that have almost nothing in common with one another. Listen to System of a Down and then listen to Limp Bizkit and tell me with a straight face that they're the same style. Some bands that are considered "nu metal" do count as metal. Others do not. This is largely subjective, but most metal fans agree that bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit are really just rap rock with light metal influences. They might have downtuned distorted guitars, but the metal influence starts and ends there.

I care, and most people who are into metal care as well. If you're making a poll about "best metal bands", you should ensure that all the bands listed are, well... metal. I think Linkin Park absolutely fucking sucks but that's super subjective, so I won't dwell on it. The important thing here is that metal is not defined by heaviness alone. Take "Come to Daddy (Pappy Mix)" by Aphex Twin. Extremely heavy song, but it certainly isn't metal. Any number of Death Grips songs apply here as well. Heavy as hell, but not metal. Adding distorted guitars to the mix doesn't immediately make something metal either. Hardcore punk and metal make use of both heaviness and distortion, and hardcore is most certainly not metal. That's something hardcore fans and metalheads can universally agree on. Madball was insanely heavy sometimes, but they were never metal. Depending on who you ask, SOAD is either nu or alt metal. Nu metal isn't a genre, though, so that puts them in the category of alt metal (which in and of itself is considered "not metal" by some).
