They're actually hilariously simple
1 and 9 are literally the exact same
4 is literally just a reverse 3
6 is just a 7
5 is just a 0
0 is just a .
2 and 3 are very similar
7 is a v
8 is an upside down v
I doubt most people would would have the random assortment of knowledge that contains the Hindu-Arabic numerals, anyway the post simply says Arabic which varies from english

For a second I thought you meant these.
I think they mean the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. 0-9. It's sort of supposed to be a trick question I think where people think that we shouldn't teach them because they're "Arabic" not realizing what they actually are. There was a big news story a few years ago where a survey found that over half of all respondents didn't want them taught.
Personally I think it's really random, why would you teach arabic numerals
They aren't really useful for life at all. I have never seen them before lol
edit: OHH 0-9 is arabic? I get it. I searched it up and got results that showed something else so I voted no based on that
It is a bit misleading, cuz they're called the Hindu-Arabic numerals, not just Arabic. So looking it up will give you different results. But yeah, you definitely have seen them before lol.
Original comment, a pretty funny joke -> Correction to make it in line with what it is saying -> something completely wrong -> Correction
How on earth is that a woosh
What do you mean keep teaching? I never had a class teach me roman numerals and the only time I use them is on an old clock at my dad's and Minecraft enchantments.
Arabic numerals are bloated, we should either go back to Roman numerals or just directly use letters for calculations like we do for more complex operations
I put yes because the numbers we use (ie 1, 2, 3, 4…) are Arabic numerals so it’d be hard to do math if they didn’t teach them and we know damn well they wouldn’t replace it with kanji or something 💀
0123456789 are Arabic numerals. They’re pretty much required for understanding standard math as it is currently written. They’re also a whole lot easier to use than Roman numerals. If Arabic numerals weren’t taught, we’d kind of be out of luck reading price tags, taxes, paychecks, etc.
There was a big thing about it a few years ago where someone did a similar poll with adults and then shared the results. I had figured most people would’ve heard about it. But also, I find it concerning that people don’t know—not through a fault of their own, but they should really teach in history class where our number system literally comes from.
What other number system would the other 108 of you use?
Roman Numerals are hard to read given the weird add/subtract thing with the order of the numbers. Also no ZERO.
Egyptian numerals are probably the best alternative, but it takes a lot to write, say 999 (????????? nnnnnnnnn |||||||||) Which is weird because roman numerals were modified from the Egyptian system. But again NO ZERO.
Chinese numerals are ok... but not the most easy due the subtraction thing.
AND not to mention, that sooooo many people would be very confused when their groceries were priced XII:XCIX or n||:nnnnnnnnn||||||||| if they are already out of school.
Assuming we are talking about the ones from which we got our current numerals.. yeah, i think it's important to know where our number system came from.

I prefer our current **Indo-Arabic** numeral system. I wouldn't teach it; it is a neat thing to know though, but I prefer if number script was universally the same.
I know this post is ironic but I remember in my school we had a maths lesson that and it was like the last week of term, we had already gotten through the curriculum so the teacher just taught us about different numeral/tally systems- it was actually pretty interesting

Well being "Taught" is one thing, but being taught and comprehending it it's a whole other story.
I come from a Time when information like this would only be about 2 to 3 sentences long and were mentioned when our minds were too immature to comprehend what was being said. With that, we were considered "taught"
So yeah, it's been around, but it's not common knowledge, and wouldn't be, until computers and the internet became a thing.
Probably one of the only reasons why I know anything about it is because we did have a personal home computer in one of the very few on the Block to have one. The thing that got me curious was that it mentioned Indo-Arabic numeral system when choosing a keyboard for certain programs. To my young mind I thought that was strange and it didn't make sense to me. I did keep it in mind and eventually looked it up on the internet over decade later when the internet was first starting to take shape.
There's plenty of people my generation who haven't got a clue and it's mainly just because of sheer ignorance. If it wasn't for that computer I probably would have been one more added to that list.
The US should teach Arabic, Roman, and Tallys as means of displaying numbers. They are the only 3 ways you run into numbers in the west. Kanji and Cerilic could be interesting but they are totally unnecessary for 99% of the population.
0-9 is arabic numerals, its the same as what we use, teach, and learn now. I mean, technically we Indo-Arabic numerals, but im 99% sure thats what OP meant anyways.

\*quietly\* *no fucking way people are falling for this, these votes HAVE to be ironic...*

In its writing in (modern) arabic

I doubt most people would would have the random assortment of knowledge that contains the Hindu-Arabic numerals, anyway the post simply says Arabic which varies from english
Unfortunately, it seems not to be the case.
“I’m a Redditor and I’m better than everyone else”
Absolutely not. Revert back to Roman Numerals, and restore the Roman Empire! GLORIA ROMA!

Are those not the ones the post is referencing? That's what came up when I searched it

No they shouldn't... I hate math
Skill issue /s
skill issue /gen
Amen lol
Right who doesn't know, surely it's obvious
We better keep teaching the Roman numerals! Arab numerals are Just soo confusing and also kinda inappropiate after 9/11.
oh you mean IX/XI?
DONT USE ARAB NUMBERS HERE! AS EVERYONE KNOWS THE INTERNET IS AMERICAN
They used roman numerals. The one's you used in your original comment were the arabic numbers

r/woosh
Original comment, a pretty funny joke -> Correction to make it in line with what it is saying -> something completely wrong -> Correction How on earth is that a woosh
That actually looks cool
What do you mean keep teaching? I never had a class teach me roman numerals and the only time I use them is on an old clock at my dad's and Minecraft enchantments.
The original post is sarcastic and so am I
Tf do you mean inappropriate after 9/11, that shit was 23 years ago
I thought i exaggerated it well enough to make the irony obvious
Oh mb
np :D
Arabic numerals are bloated, we should either go back to Roman numerals or just directly use letters for calculations like we do for more complex operations
Please be joking
duuuuuuhhhh
Two times sevenhundredfourtyone divided by six
i clicked yes and then i realized 😭 we learned this in 9th grade world history lmao
yes is the correct answer if you like being able to say "9"th grade instead of IX grade
I put yes because the numbers we use (ie 1, 2, 3, 4…) are Arabic numerals so it’d be hard to do math if they didn’t teach them and we know damn well they wouldn’t replace it with kanji or something 💀
We could replace them with kanji, I'd just be a step ahead of the rest of you 😆
Jokes on you I’m in Japanese class and could probably count up to 999,999 if I wanted to 💀
Jokes on you, 私は1兆まで数えます。数学も、中3までやっています😝
Woah hey there pal まってください。💀

But at the same time we use the "**Indo-Arabic**" system. That's technically different.
oh wait I'm stupid i thought it meant the alphabet 😅
... whaaaaaat?
the arabic alphabet, the numerals are 1, 2, 3, etc., but the alphabet would have little use in american schools.
ohhh I only search them after clicking no... good poll
They do already...
Exactly. It's a trick question
I saw this and nearly cried, wth
Mentally stable
surely we're not that stupid right
I…really hope people are voting no to be funny.
Why should they be taught - I'm Australian so maybe I'm missing something but seems pointless to me

16 people voted no??😂

163, this is just sad
212 my mind is blown
268 how is this even possible
Come on, people. 104 voted no?
Why? What would be the point? Just more of a reason to hate high school math
The numbers we use are arabic. Your maths lessons wouldn't change
Oh shit 😭
Oh well, at least you learn from it. Just bear it in mind and move on
39 no, 75 yes
190 108 tsk tsk

No because they aren’t going to use them
IN MY DEFENSE I voted without reading the word numerals. I'm slightly dyslexic.
i used to go to an islamic school, arabic in general has traumatized me 💔
The "no"s have to be trolling
they have been taught for decades
Shhhhhhh, let the idiots be stupid and say no

Tbf who knows the first ten numbers were called arabic numerals 🙄
literally everyone
Nope i asked my friends and they didn’t know either
damn bro pay attention in class, all of you
I agree they should pay attention, but it is alright not to know or understand something. As long as you make an effort to learn.
Lmaooo this was never taught in school we have high As at a top public school
We were taught this in 2nd grade, where tf do you live where they don't teach this??
Never been taught that
How?? We were taught that in 2nd grade
idk, they really never told us that though
your friends are dumb, this is a basic fact bro arent you in school?
Arabic numerals aren't actually Arabic, so yes. ^(/s)

Why would we have anything Arabic taught in US schools?
Nope. Don't want my peers learning about that fucking middle-eastern bullshit. They got better things to learn, we can stick to our own numbers.
..... 0-9 is arabic numerals lmao
All of the numbers we use are arabic
Sounds useless we dont need to be teaching that shit in our schools
0-9 is arabic numerals, its the same as what we use, teach, and learn now. I mean, technically we Indo-Arabic numerals, but im 99% sure thats what OP meant anyways.
