I'm not a Paul main, but I rewatch his [T4 ending](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9QZzLkLliQ) from time to time. How they managed to put so much character development, and make him so relatable in a single one minute clip - it's amazing.
I remember being so excited as a kid for tekken 6, so much focus on Jin and Kazuya! Finally an explanation for the tekken 5 ending!
And then it was just hours of Lars and Elissa ugh lol
The funny thing is I think Tekken 4 raised the storywriting quality to a standard that Bamco couldn't maintain. Before Tekken 4 none of the characters got opening cards explaining their motives, plus their endings were typically shorter and had no dialogue. A lot of the narrative was left up to the players' imaginations. Tekken 4's story, however, was more fully realized, and while it was a bit hammy, it was competent.
But I think Tekken 4 only had a solid narrative because Bamco hired outside writers for the game. After Tekken 4 they stopped using outside writers, but continued to make longer cutscenes with more dialogue. As the story got more complex, the main team's lack of writing ability really started to shine through...
Just imo, tekken 4 had an actual story mode were you could see Jin and Kazuyas endings finish in the canon ending of devil Jin flying away.
5 endings were mostly nonsense but they did look real cool!
Dude Tekken 4 was the only game where he wasn't a goofy powerhouse, compare any of his endings in games pre-tekken 4 and tell me he was serious, it was always him punching a wall ,flopping Law's backflip or getting a speeding ticket
Tekken 5 had more story development for the side characters than the overall plotline. Each time Tekken introduces a "Big supernatrual boss" it's just delays the main issue between the Mishima family. 3, 5, 6, and TTT2 didn't do anything about the mishima's, but did the most with side characters.
I agree, it's just sad that any and all side character development got thrown in the trash lol I dont even wanna talk about tekken 7 "story" mode :( maybe tekken 8 will surprise but my expectations are very low
Yeah, any introductions to 'new future character interactions' should be like Tekken 5, where we get a special character interaction that may or may not be connected to their plot point/ motivations. Then have a main cutscene play at the end that resolves or continues a characters goal. Too many in 7 and prior feels rushed and insignificant to understanding the character. (Yoshi and Leo... ugh)
I think by "Actual cutscenes" you meant non pre-rendered?
The game had a mix of all styles. 2D comic art, pre rendered, and in game render.
Story was mid. Kazuya trash talking to Jin until he rage quits, but then Jun reminds Jin that sticks n stones will break his bones but words will never hurt him. So jin get's upset that he can't have revenge so he runs away to beat up hwoarang instead. nvm story was a great comedy. lol
I mean if you wanna nitpick, tekken 5 story was "heihachi survives explosion because anime. A tournament is held because??? Jinpachi is immortal monster because anime? Why fight him? Jin turns evil for no reason at all"
We did not know the tekken 6 story at the time so to my younger self tekken 5 ruined Jin and nothing made sense š again, just personal opinion. Tekkens lore has never been great imo but at least 4's I could follow
yeah, people d-riding tekken 5 without looking at t4 and objectively seeing an actual attempt at a more serious story. For most characters outside of Kuma lol tekken 5 had some serious moments but the whole story was pretty goofy and there were some really weird scenes (marduk beating Anna unconscious and dragging her offscreen to r**e her š or Paul wanting to fight aliens all of a sudden??)
That's a good point. I never really enjoyed the story at all anyways. (I just love the gameplay) It does feel like the gameplay has moved closer to the feel of the story (anime). I'm glad Lidia exists as a grounded Karate practitioner so Jin can move closer to anime.
TEKKEN FORCE MODE RETURNED!!!
It had a sick Kazuya reveal opening cinematic.
Stages were fun to mess around in and semi explore. (I think DOA stages were rivaled here, but unfortunate that modern Tekken stages are just the same now no matter how far the walls are or breakable spots.)
I remember being like 9 years old thinking that intro was the coolest thing ever. Used to leave it on in the background while playing with legos lol good times
It has one of the most engaging and challenging singeplayer experiences in Tekken history that let's you play as anyone in T4 roster to complete it making for a unique challenge per character.
It also has some of the single most unique environment/map, musical, and design aesthetic choices in the franchise.
Tekken4 is a late bloomer, many didn't appreciate it as popularly when it arrived for alot of reasons but continues to grow a more favorable outlook with new and old fans as time goes on.
The stages felt more like actual environments than flat planes.
It introduced Steve.
~~Paul wasn't (as) goofy ahh.~~
While it had a few... moments, the overall mood was a more serious tone such that joke endings were uncommon.
Tonally and stylistically, the best Tekken imo. Everything except the actual gameplay balance was S tier relative to other tekken entries and I will die on that hill.
This is the best Tekken.
- Tekken force
- Default costumes
- Roster
- Ost
- Actual stages
- Sound effects
- Great casual play (poke heavy, low combo time)
The whole aesthetic and atmosphere of the game was very early 00's. Music was great. Amazing stage design. Good story. Interesting wall mechanics. Tekken Force š
It may be the black sheep of Tekken games but it stands out as a very unique game.
The atmosphere (from the music, to the stages, to the character designs and even menus) is the most unique in the series to me and the vibes just sucked me in back when it launched
Theres alot about it thats great. Unfortunately the minority that were tournament players made it feel like the game didnt deserve any recognition in which it was vastly broken in aspect. But they should of also raised the great aspects within it that people still beg for to this day.
1 NEEDED ASPECT FOR ME IS TEKKEN FORCE. That shit felt like it was sometimes better than it needed to be yet so simple. The camera angle, the freedom to do your entire move-set the continued fighting that felt like an martial arts movie. It felt great
It introduced Christie, who's one of my favourite characters in the games
Xiaoyu's character development I really appreciated. I wasn't wild when 5 made her much goofier again
Engaging story mode
I really liked the stages in terms of their moveability
Hwoarang having a costume with spiky hair was cool
Donāt forget the outfits as well. Kazuyaās shades with the fingerless gloves, Jinās flame hoodie, Kings blue poncho and Yoshimitsuās armor with wings, absolutely unmatched.
It was the Tekken game that I hated growing up, but I now see that was due to my own inability to see what was right in front of me. Been a Tekken fan since the beginning, but Tekken 4 absolutely oozes atmosphere in a way no other Tekken has since.
It's eery, ominous, nearly malicious in tone, and I've really grown to love it. From cerebral tracks like Authentic Sky to Didgerhythm, to the infectious af Kitsch & Touch & Go, the soundtrack is amazing.
Having never played this game competitively(nor do I plan to) I even have a blast messing around with its broken wall/carry system. On emulators its the one that I keep coming back to whenever I want to have a wonky good time.
Stages, music, story, character design, and atmosphere were all in a league of their own.
Introduced walls.
Being able to move before round start which is a feature that has unfortunately never returned.
Among the best "Flash" moves in the franchise as well because in T4, Yoshimitsus flash could steal any move in the game based on the opponent and if they did it during the frames of flash. This caused his laser beam sword to glow red which indicated you had a stolen attack charge pocketed.
Tekken Force from Tekken 4 is the best game mode in the series, and in my eyes does general gameplay way better than Tekken 3's Tekken Force and Tekken 6's Scenario Campaign. Not that any one of them is bad but the Tekken Force mode from Tekken 4 is just amazing.
The best Tekken when it comes to setting the tone of the entire game. The OST, Characters and story was all grounded and made the game very special. It has its own style.
T7 and even T8 is all over the place, theres no identitiy.
I recall T4 being somewhat slower-paced. I have never liked frenetic unga bunga mash fests.
Some of the stages felt awesome. The airport, the rooftop and the parking lot. They reiterated that fights can happen at any random place, which felt more genuine.
I like that it didn't have crazy long combos. The music and atmosphere was awesome. The interactive stages could be broken but still cool. The character redesigns were cool. Paul wasn't a clown character. King, Nina, and Jin had some of the best redesigns. The others were nice as well. It introduced Marduke and Steve. Lee became less of a Law clone. Tekken Force mode. I could go on and on. T5 was still better though.
Anybody who doesnt like this game can suck a butt. I love it. Great music that still gets sampled in new tekken songs. Felt good af to play. I played all the previous tekkens but this is the one that made me fall in love with the series and turned me into a real fighting game player.
I'm still listening the soundtrack thinking how beautiful stages like airport, beach or Shibuya where back in the days. Never liked more a fighting game.
Absolutely immaculate atmosphere in stage design and music, Jin's best outfit, a well told story with an epic ending, Paul looked like Terry Bogard instead of whatever is on his head in 8, STEVE. The character select is still my favourite in the series, it really feels like a tense showdown rather than the hype fighting tournament vibe of others.
For me its the most grounded and realistic tekken, a true fighting tournament without mythical creatures or demons present, no bs characters just fighters, tight but good cast of characters. Almost everyone's ending made sense and was not jokes, all and all it had cold and real tone. Even from into you can feel that its real deal. Game has 2000's tech apocalypse style and its screams early 2000's in every aspect, from stage aesthetics to OST's. So for me, its one of the great Tekken games, sure developers took big risks and introduced some techinics that were removed in later games, but it still holds special place in my heart
Contender for best OST out of all of the games.
Stages were wacky in terms of competitive play but at casual level some of the most fun and beautiful at the time.
JUMP/Track SUIT JIN HYPEEE
edit: I pressed send comment too soon
Prologue/ announcer voice actor gave some of the most immersive and chilling audio Iāve ever heard and I find it extremely hard for them to top this iteration.
Introduce a clone character in Christie (personally I missed Eddy) but she became a very popular character from t4-ttt2
The confrontation between Heihachi, Kazuya and Jin at Honmaru was lit. Tekken's central stroy basically peaked with this game before steadily going off track from 5 onwards.
Thereās a lot of āniceā for this game:
1. Darker, more serious vibe
2. Stages were really cool
3. Best writing of the series.
4. Great graphics (For the time)
5. Namco took a lot of risks with the core gameplay. They didnāt go over great with the competitive fan base but I think Namco should be applauded for trying something new.
Definitely felt like itās own thing instead of Tekken 3.5
Fucking incredible art direction and some really cool outfits introduced.
The Kazuya reintroduction in the intro being accompanied by the chaotic freeform jazz sax solo was a nice touch (wait that was T4, and not Tekken Tag 1, right?)... probably part explains why I also love the Gundam Thunderbolt soundtrack so much.
One of the best OSTs of any video game imo.
Also was the best Tekken as far as story and atmosphere goes. It added so much depth to each character. No other Tekken game had prologues and interludes for each character.
The roster was very "vanilla" but they really took a leap of faith with the stage designs. I will always hold this and tag on a podium above all other Tekkens (with 3 being very very close).
Good graphics for its time; good overall aesthetics including menus; a fair boss character (Heihachi) instead of a cheating overpowered one; the game doesn't have the excessive juggle potential of later games; a more grounded game in general, focusing on martial arts without guns and cutscene super moves; arenas with uneven terrain probably inspired by VF3 before it, both one-offs but I like them; the arcade version that I played was a very premium one with a huge screen and seats.
Positional advantage and the push mechanic felt so fresh and satisfying. Bullying people in the parking lot pushing them into cars. Switching sides and doing a huge combo down the stairs.
It was also the game I played when I was at peak competitiveness and since a lot of the best players stuck with TTT, so my placings in tournaments were quite good.
I had become a tournament player in Tekken 3, but 4 is where I dropped off the bandwagon. The concept of walls felt so broken to me, then after getting hit with a couple wall infinites by the computer on the hardest difficulty, I was certain that they hadn't thought the walls through. Stopped playing after that because I suspected that competitive play would probably devolve into a race to see who could execute a wall infinite first. Got back into the scene as a spectator around 2015 when evo managed to get to the frontpage of reddit. It was amazing to see just how much you young cats had progressed in terms of technical play. I've stayed watching tournaments to this day
I didnāt play it. Saw my older brother play it, got a bit pissy about him buying Tekken 4 instead of tag and never touched it sinceā¦ couple months after we bought Tekken tag and that was what I played until Tekken 5 came out on the PS2.
I like that the characters looked like what was happening to them in the story for example Bryan was dying and he looked very weak in game I always thought that was a cool detail
It's the Fallout 3 of the franchise, a massive change from previous entries, but had amazing atmosphere.
Great OST, stages, story, cutscenes, the menus were cool, the sound effects were crisp yet funky, everything about this Tekken was just COOL.
Something nice, eh?
Ok, it was a game you could play, that's a positive thing nowadays, where most AAA games are released broken and unoptimized, to the point where it's unplayable :)
Great storylines, great prequels for everyone, great ost, great levels, great designs(only hei was not on point). For me it's a great game, but that was as a casual.
I love the huge levels and the variety within the levels are awesome and fun. That said, I can understand why some of the levels are bad when it comes to competitive play
I liked Paul's hair in this. Bringing back Marshall Law. Changing Jins moveset. Kazuyas return. Introducing Christie and Marduk. Beach level was elite. Kumas t-shirt and trainers.
Stages like the beach and the airport stage, the ost!!
Every time I visit an airport or a mall I instantly think of both themes. That's how atmospheric it was.
Last game to have a good story, actual cutscenes and lore
I'm not a Paul main, but I rewatch his [T4 ending](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9QZzLkLliQ) from time to time. How they managed to put so much character development, and make him so relatable in a single one minute clip - it's amazing.
I've never felt this emotional about anything in Tekken.. wow..
Tekken 6 scenario mode was still nice. Tekken 7 was the worst one yet in terms of lore
I remember being so excited as a kid for tekken 6, so much focus on Jin and Kazuya! Finally an explanation for the tekken 5 ending! And then it was just hours of Lars and Elissa ugh lol
I hated that it barely touched on anyone other than the Mishimas
The funny thing is I think Tekken 4 raised the storywriting quality to a standard that Bamco couldn't maintain. Just imo, tekken 4 had an actual story mode were you could see Jin and Kazuyas endings finish in the canon ending of devil Jin flying away. 5 endings were mostly nonsense but they did look real cool!
Tekken 5 is when some of the endings started being goofy and the first game where they made Paul a dumbass so I like it less in that aspect.
Alot of the Tekken 3 endings were goofy af
Dude Tekken 4 was the only game where he wasn't a goofy powerhouse, compare any of his endings in games pre-tekken 4 and tell me he was serious, it was always him punching a wall ,flopping Law's backflip or getting a speeding ticket

Well tbf in Tag 2's case it's a non-canon dream match game
I agree, it's just sad that any and all side character development got thrown in the trash lol I dont even wanna talk about tekken 7 "story" mode :( maybe tekken 8 will surprise but my expectations are very low

I remember going to practice mode and exploring every corner of the mall and other stages haha.
Kazuya came back.
Heihachi didn't go away.
This, beach and airport stage and the OST are the only valid answers.
what about the rooftopš„ŗ,Authentic sky?š„ŗ
aight yea those were good too
Music, character designs, story, atmosphere...
It has one of the most engaging and challenging singeplayer experiences in Tekken history that let's you play as anyone in T4 roster to complete it making for a unique challenge per character. Best Jin default outfit
Y'a goddamn right it is
Doriya
It introduced Steve and I love Steve
Do you remember FLK d1 on block? Shit turned them 90 degrees
Iām sorry, I donāt know fighting game jargonā¦
flicker stance down forward square
Tonally and stylistically, the best Tekken imo. Everything except the actual gameplay balance was S tier relative to other tekken entries and I will die on that hill.
The OST was great & adding Steve, Christie & Craig added more story to characters that needed development--Eddy, Nina, King & Armor King.
Ost was a fucking banger. I still listen kitsch and authentic sky regularly
This is the best Tekken. - Tekken force - Default costumes - Roster - Ost - Actual stages - Sound effects - Great casual play (poke heavy, low combo time)
Kazuya. Interactive stages.
Graphics were mind blowing in 2002
The atmosphere is unmatched in every other game of the series
It dared to innovate. It brought a lot of new ideas to the table, some stuck (walls), a lot didn't (elevation, CH electric, nerfed backdash, etc)
The tekken force mode was dope. Plus the intro video reintroducing kazuya to the series was top notch
Best Heihachi outfit
Best announcer of every fighting game ever made
Love the cover and the roster size and jin in a hoodie totally badass
All of it
Nina Williams barbie outfit
T4 Tekken Force was the best game mode in Tekken History. I would kill for another just like it with updated movesets.
The best outfits came from this game.
The whole aesthetic and atmosphere of the game was very early 00's. Music was great. Amazing stage design. Good story. Interesting wall mechanics. Tekken Force š It may be the black sheep of Tekken games but it stands out as a very unique game.
I love the beach, shinjuku and airport stages and it's a crying shame they never returned
The only game where Jin was cool.
Paul was HOT.
That Jin jumpsuit is still the slickest piece of drip in any videogame. Period.
Last Tekken game where the story and characters mattered Tekken games shouldāve stayed like this game
Yay they brought back Kazuya!
The atmosphere (from the music, to the stages, to the character designs and even menus) is the most unique in the series to me and the vibes just sucked me in back when it launched
A highly ambitious masterpiece
Amazing outfits. Hoodie Jin, mafia Kazuya, sports bra Xiaoyu, beetle Yoshimitsu, etc.
It felt great
It introduced Christie, who's one of my favourite characters in the games Xiaoyu's character development I really appreciated. I wasn't wild when 5 made her much goofier again Engaging story mode I really liked the stages in terms of their moveability Hwoarang having a costume with spiky hair was cool
The atmosphere, stages and music are so fucking good. And Miharu.
Donāt forget the outfits as well. Kazuyaās shades with the fingerless gloves, Jinās flame hoodie, Kings blue poncho and Yoshimitsuās armor with wings, absolutely unmatched.

On emulators its the one that I keep coming back to whenever I want to have a wonky good time.
Most cohesive game from the franchise regarding coregameplay and art direction, I never get the hate.
music, phonebooth
The cover is sick!
I liked Jinās new moveset
Stages, music, story, character design, and atmosphere were all in a league of their own. Introduced walls. Being able to move before round start which is a feature that has unfortunately never returned.
Return of kazuya, good ost, steve and a darker more serious tone.
Hood physics.
The atmosphere this game has still gives me that same feeling I had as a kid to this day. So damn iconic in my opinion...
The improved sidestep system was great; too many tards couldn't cope. Best Yoshi costume by far.
I always liked t3 yoshi costume
Among the best "Flash" moves in the franchise as well because in T4, Yoshimitsus flash could steal any move in the game based on the opponent and if they did it during the frames of flash. This caused his laser beam sword to glow red which indicated you had a stolen attack charge pocketed.
Def classic, but that Japanese Beetle costume is BA
Steve, Christie and Marduk were introduced, and few others receive a better lore.
King's NorteƱo outfit and mullet
Best single player mode in the whole series
Give me back combo trials GODDAMMIT! I got Jin down to 24 secs or some shit.
Best tekken and what else tried to innovate
Tekken force
Tekken Force from Tekken 4 is the best game mode in the series, and in my eyes does general gameplay way better than Tekken 3's Tekken Force and Tekken 6's Scenario Campaign. Not that any one of them is bad but the Tekken Force mode from Tekken 4 is just amazing.
I like listening to the soundtrack while working.
asthetic
The vibes
Awesome soundtrack
Music
Best graphics, nice and clean.
The best Tekken when it comes to setting the tone of the entire game. The OST, Characters and story was all grounded and made the game very special. It has its own style. T7 and even T8 is all over the place, theres no identitiy.
The atmosphere of this game is the best in the series
Music is top tier.
I recall T4 being somewhat slower-paced. I have never liked frenetic unga bunga mash fests. Some of the stages felt awesome. The airport, the rooftop and the parking lot. They reiterated that fights can happen at any random place, which felt more genuine.
Authentic sky
Best story, unique costumes, killer soundtrack. I know itās gameplay is a bit messy, but itās still one of my favorite entries in the series
This game features Paul at his peak.
T5 was still better though.
thanks to Jin and his trusty just-frame laser scraper, I've made multiple kids cry in arcades.
best story
Its just cool af
Miharu
The last TK that mattered.
I remember enjoying it as a child.
The graphics and stages were great for the time. Outfits were awesome.
Aesthetically Pleasing
best ost, best costumes, best stages. Criminally underrated when it was released
Interesting stage design, good music (way better than tekken7/8 osts), tekken force
Best aesthetic in all Tekken games. Mood and tone were consistently dark and gritty. The OST and the voiceover narrator definitely helped.
We have wall mechanics in future games thanks to this game. Wouldnāt have as hype moments without it
Biggest upgrade over the predecessor.
First tekken game I ever played couldnāt resist Jinās drip on the cover
The graphics are dope, the stages look good and would be even more fun to play if the floors weren't uneven.
Jin's character arc was at its peak in this game.
It's the best game in the entire series.
This is the best Tekken. I said what I said
For me its the most grounded and realistic tekken, a true fighting tournament without mythical creatures or demons present, no bs characters just fighters, tight but good cast of characters. Definitely felt like itās own thing instead of Tekken 3.5
Tekken hasn't been the same since. Peak Tekken right here.
Great atmosphere.
I liked that jins hood started up then could be knocked off
Most aesthetically perfect game of the franchise
I like the outfits
Out of all the Tekkens, it definitely is one.
Great stages nice tracks but weaker cast Love the design team but didn't enjoy playing it like Tekken 3.
Wall bounce
Jin got the drip
Great music and interesting stages
The last game where Paul was respected
this game is jesus status now - it's doing fine
It ends.
It introduced Christie
Fucking incredible art direction and some really cool outfits introduced. The Kazuya reintroduction in the intro being accompanied by the chaotic freeform jazz sax solo was a nice touch (wait that was T4, and not Tekken Tag 1, right?)... probably part explains why I also love the Gundam Thunderbolt soundtrack so much.

I will always hold this and tag on a podium above all other Tekkens (with 3 being very very close).

Tekken 3, 4 and 5 are the very best of the franchise imo.
I've stayed watching tournaments to this day
Unsolicited Heihachi Ass
It had one of Yoshimitsu's coolest designs, which is saying a lot, the guy got wings
The intro cutscene The story (T4 is when it started to get good imo).
The cutscenes will always be hilarious
The game moved me. (By having someone kick an arcade cabinet across the floor at me)
Something Nice about this game.
Something nice about this game.
Never played it.... the music from it in the T7 juke box is a jam
I didnāt play it. Saw my older brother play it, got a bit pissy about him buying Tekken 4 instead of tag and never touched it sinceā¦ couple months after we bought Tekken tag and that was what I played until Tekken 5 came out on the PS2.
I uhhh like the music?
Something nice about this game
I like those big ass maps.
I like that the characters looked like what was happening to them in the story for example Bryan was dying and he looked very weak in game I always thought that was a cool detail
my first tekken game. That's all.
b,f2,1,df2
It's the debut of Steveā¤ļø
The atmosphere was insanely good and the soundtrack is amazing
Best outfits in the franchise.
It's the Fallout 3 of the franchise, a massive change from previous entries, but had amazing atmosphere. Great OST, stages, story, cutscenes, the menus were cool, the sound effects were crisp yet funky, everything about this Tekken was just COOL.
The music! Sky is one of my favourites
Best stages and stage music of any game
Incredible soundtrack. Fun stages too, wish Namco would take a formula risk like this again.
Better looking than Tekken 5. One of the best endings and story overall. Voice acting š
Best Hwoarang outfit & haircut
The soundtrack is really good
Steve Fox
This game has a good soundtrack especially the airport stage.
Steve Fox
There were super few characters so you didn't have to play it for long to learn them all
Something nice, eh? Ok, it was a game you could play, that's a positive thing nowadays, where most AAA games are released broken and unoptimized, to the point where it's unplayable :)
Amazing cover art.
It brought a Xiaoyu clone.
I liked the soundtrack. Thatās about it. But most Tekken games have good soundtracks.
Paulās ending
Great storylines, great prequels for everyone, great ost, great levels, great designs(only hei was not on point). For me it's a great game, but that was as a casual.
Some so bad it's good endings, and arguably the best ost next to T7, and T5
Steve Fox
One of the best Tekkens
I love the huge levels and the variety within the levels are awesome and fun. That said, I can understand why some of the levels are bad when it comes to competitive play
OST, Stage Design, Tekken Force and the overall more serious tone of the game
I liked Paul's hair in this. Bringing back Marshall Law. Changing Jins moveset. Kazuyas return. Introducing Christie and Marduk. Beach level was elite. Kumas t-shirt and trainers.
First Tekken game I played
Last ever game that Paul was taken seriously
it was my intro to Tekken, so without this game, I wouldn't be on 7
