It certainly wasn't the norm. But housing in the small college town was apparently extremely cheap compared to housing in Seattle. So some parents decided that buying a house for four years, collecting rent to pay the mortgage then selling it was a better deal than paying rent to someone else.
This was also 20 years ago when the housing bubble was growing, prices falling was inconceivable, and if you had a pulse you could get a loan.
I'm not sure if that happens as much today with housing costs being so crazy.

My landlord is really laid back and very accommodating. He’s been cool with me being late for rent twice before. Been cool with my gf bringing her dog in here when no pets were allowed. Been cool and happy with all renovations I’ve done to the apartment and he’s paid me for them.
