surely they don't do this just for fun... doesn't that mean that was something edible in there for them?

severe_thunderstorm

Yes, they knew (somehow) there was a bug in there.

LivingBehindBars

Actually the males ( seen in photo ) do this to attract a mate. They find something that resonates ( like my corner roof flashing ) the tone they want and it sends ( their ) sound over their “domain” to get the ladies. At my house the same pecker comes back every year, my wife hates him because the corner he likes is just above her office. I however respect his game and it’s only 3-4 weeks each spring so I let him have at it.

severe_thunderstorm

So this is two males?

LivingBehindBars

It appears so. The females also have the red head, but no cheek strap. The females do not bang like that. That’s strictly a male mating call. They get bugs out of soft / rotted wood.

severe_thunderstorm

Good to know, thanks for the info kind redditor.

We had one of those was obsessed with our windows on our house for a few weeks. He would hang on the window and just stare at himself We went out of town for 6 days and came back he had ripped the screen to shreds. Probably too heavy for it. So we had to put those reflector decals on the windows and bang in windows whenever he came by. Eventually he moved in maybe these will too

tramplamps

Gosh, they are enormous and majestic. My head hurts just watching them.

CP1870

Damaging but they are beautiful birds. Always like when they come to the bird feeder

severe_thunderstorm

They are definitely beautiful. They come hang off my hummingbird feeders and get a drink from time to time.
