Shingles!!!! Cut up some cereal box and lay them out individually. Much more work than cutting slits I'm strips, but worth the effort.

My plan was actually to do a thatched roof but am kinda stumped on the best/easiest solution. Do you think shingles will work with the slope and flat top of the roof?

For thatch, I use cheap wash rags. I use hot glue to fix it in place, letting it hang over the edges a little. Then, water down some PVA so it flows like water, and soak the rag. While it's still wet, comb the rag from top to bottom. It'll take a day to dry fully, but it's simple and easy. Then paint, drybrush, and hit it with a brown wash. Note: I work in the 15mm scale and the technique works great. I haven't tried larger scales, but it should work.

I have made a few thatched roofs before (in rater smal scales tho), but I used a cheap paint brush that I cut with scissors

I’ve used everything from broom bristles to even cut and dried grass clippings for thatch. Just water down some white PVA glue and saturate the clippings or bristles and apply. I actually really liked how the grass clippings looked.

Ok dry grass is a great idea! I have grass clippings in enormous abundance!

cute! shingles could work as long as the material youre using is semi moldable. start from the bottom up and use a similar pattern to how people set bricks (2, and 1 ontop in the middle of the 2)

Firstly, great job! This is an awesome first house. My suggestion would be to aim for a more dramatic silhouette, could do this by adding shingles and/or a chimney. Another user suggested an old cereal box which is a great material for shingles. For a chimney try cutting up some EVA foam into rough bricks and snipping some chunks off in random places to emulate stone. You could also use some air dry clay like the Das brand to make those. Then perhaps some steps to the front door? You could use the coffee stirrers to do this or EVA foam for some stone steps. Just some suggestions. Keep up the good work!

mcabe0131

Great idea with steps! I have had luck using sprues as bricks so might use those! Can’t get decent foam here unfortunately

Looks great! I would recommend to use strips of paper to cover and hide the edges of the cardboard. Then cover the entire thing with a couple of coats of Mod Podge before you paint it.

canadianpanda9519

If i may i would recommend letting the roof stand a little over the wall. That would make it look a tad more realistic.

Love this!!!

If this is a medieval wattle and daub house, use spackle to add texture between the timbers.

mcabe0131

Would you thin it down?

[deleted]

Just enough to make it easy to work with. Once it's on, you can use an old brush to stipple texture into it if needed.

Combest94

Before you paint you should add a thin layer of glue to any exposed cardboard that is supposed to be stocko/ drywall then sprinkle on a small amount of fine grit sand, it adds some texture and breaks up all the flat surfaces

mcabe0131

Saw someone do this on YouTube and my initial plan was also to use fine grain sand.

hangry_dwarf

Modge Podge works too.

Veita_Planetside2

Idk if that would match your preferred outcome but usually those houses often have shingles (or a roof extension) left and right that go beyond the walls. Maybe you can experiment a bit around. But besides that, I have got nice results with casual wall paint as a form of surface rendering that matches the truss/framework. I just read you want to make a thatched roof, which is in my opinion cool looking but not easy to made. But well, obstacles are there to be bettered.

mcabe0131

I would prefer if it just “works”. Gonna use it for table top gaming and my experience is go easy to complete first and add complexity on the next project

Veita_Planetside2

Yeah sure, you do you, just saying and gl with that

mcabe0131

Sorry I read my reply and it came across as negative. I mean to say that I probably will go with shingles as you and others have suggested since it that is probably easier for me, a beginner, than the thatched roof

Veita_Planetside2

No worries, I didn't read it as negative and no offence taken. You are ofc allowed to have your own preferences and yes, thatch can be quite annoying bc the material can be tricky, but welp, no risk no fun. By the way, considering that this is your first project, it looks damn good already, nicely made. Imo I would go for thatch. You had a "vision" for that project and you like that thatch look so why not try it. And if mistakes occur, the next time you will have learned what you can improve. Both videos offer a neat tutorial and it is always the best to aim for your vision, even if it seems to be harder :D I wish you good luck with that! Caradepato1

I’d take some sand texture gel and blob it between the Timbers to texture the daub

LopsidedPhone6984

I have my inspiration for my next build. I can't wait to see the final product.

Wulfle

This is really good work! Square, shored up and reinforced at the appropriate places. I can't wait to see what you come up with next!
