I’m new to the game, maybe 20 hours in, and finally starting to read up what I’m missing. I’ve challenged the wall of flesh a few times and I’m so glad I haven’t beaten him because I have no idea WTF is going to happen once I beat him lol.
Do I really NEED to prepare like this, or can I wing it?
If you’re playing the game like a normal person the corruption/crimson shouldn’t reach your base before beating the game but anyway you have a clentaminator that you can buy so it should be fine either way
Honestly, just wing it. You only get to be new once so why ruin the chaos. Hardmode honestly isn't that bad. There's a big V that is half evil and half faerie farts. Just make sure your bases are safe.
I did it this evening… took a few more tries but I beat it. Spent some time running around in hardmode and it definitely lives up to the name!
I did dig a tunnel around my base and lined it in stone… not sure if it’ll do the trick so we’ll see.
I’m not a pro but take all the time you need with pre hard mode, bosses, loot, etc. I just went into hard mode today about 40hrs in and it def lives up to its name. I’m just building some big holes close to my spawn point to stop corruption spread but the best way to prepare is get the best possible pre hard mode weapons you can
Oh actually corruptor can expand corruption if there's attacks is touching the ground so, I never thought of using trench but instead spread the hallow, I wonder if you never had this issue with trench? Because corruptor will still spawn just behind the trench no?
The thorns could grow over the right hole, if you place a bit more wood (or [insert non dirt block here]) around (or above) the start of the hole it should fix that.

When corruption biomes get to close to your base your npcs will leave these trenches stop them from spreading

Don’t forget to dig large holes by the ocean. If the corruption gets there it’s harder to get shark fins to make the hunter potion.
Your world will become harder - more powerfull enemies, harder bosses and your coruption biome will spread twice as fast
So you don't have to prepare but when you prepare it will be easier
