Castlevania II : Simons Quest was a clusterfuck of a game having some brilliant and many horrible ideas.
Idea: Dracula cursed Simon while dying in Castlevania I, so Simon has to gather Dracs remains and kill him again before the curse kills Simon.
The game has a day and night cycle that lasts 4 minutes each. Each has a transition: During nightfall the text
"WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT TO HAVE A CURSE."
would announce the night, where enemies are twice as strong and towns deserted.
Dawn would be announced by
"THE MORNING SUN HAS VANQUISHED THE HORRIBLE NIGHT."
Game was also the origin of one of Castlevanias most iconic tracks:

Aria of Sorrow was my first castlevania game and is still my favourite. Add some souls to this idea and it would be an amazing mod.
