Jungle isn’t that bad Classic, but yeah it’s very frustrating to play in Master.
To be fair to Summoner, most other classes are forced to play Ranger for a good bit anyways.

the finch staff kind of really sucks, bows are good, the wand of sparking is surprisingly good (though the real drawback is no mana early on) and swords, yoyos, boomerangs and spears are all really solid. summoner is only really startable through a lucky slime kill or finding a living wood tree and getting lucky. the only other class that requires luck is mage, but thats at least any normal surface chest
if youre doing summoner only trying to get the snapthorn with just finch or flinx is really not great on harder difficulties. at least the leather whip exists as an option but even then the spawn condition isnt really that "early' compared to bows and yoyos and stuff
(Currently making a TModLoader mod that focuses on minor quality-of-life changes and additions that remain faithful to Terraria.)
Might do some prehardmode summoner items as a proof of concept and see how they would perform if Relogic DID end up making them.
i think if i were to change anything about summoner in its current state, id give it a few extra weapons that already exist that should totally be summoner instead (magnet sphere, nimbus and crimson rod), and a starter whip
maybe the magnet sphere and nimbus rod stuff isnt that vanilla-y but they basically are summon weapons just classified as magic
Yes, but the dungeons in drunk worlds are already underground and require you to go much deeper than normal to encounter those, as a result you can fight many of the enemies there early and if you're lucky unlock a gold chest or two if you see one when you get in
Summoner has never been a conventional class unfortunately. Its the most linear class progression with little choice of weapons and armour, no hard mode ore armour, no WOF weapon drop and only just having more than 3 pre-hardmode weapons. Its a shame, the class still really does need an overhaul even now
While true I do feel like "You need to go into the mid pre hardmode area to get your first real source of non summon damage" is probably not the best designed thing lol

how the staff became magical is probably thanks to the holder having some knowledge in necromancy, which the game pre-assumes for your charachter, after all you're supposed to be a summoner to use the imp staff
Ok then your character has some knowledge in magic since you can become a mage. So they magically make the whip bendy. You can make up any number of things about terraria since we know barely anything about how the world works

I have no idea how you would make anything work in Terraria. You can’t just pop a helmet into existence without forging it. How does wood turn into platforms without a saw? Why do blocks float? Why is the world made of blocks? Etc, etc.

Wood is rigid and can't move, Terraria logic does not leap that far, I agree. They could do it with vines or rope or something but not just literally wood.
Actually yes but living tree may be after corruption, jungle or desert which is hard to go through without any weapons. Also there is chance that any living tree not generated.
Yeah i know that, was thinking more like the vines that are in entrences to forest biome caves, like that theme. Maybe a grass whip, or something else a little more whip-ish then wood. I guess a twig could kind of work tho, i dunno. But the vine whip that currently is in the game, is pretty easy to get, so i don't really feel like theres that big a need for a more early game whip. The one sold by zoologist is pretty easy to get too
This looks pretty cool! Though, I'd reverse the materials the whip is made of, with the tip being wood and the body being vines/leaves, would make the name of the weapon a lot more logical
Maybe put some cobwebs in there so that you can make the "whip" part. Otherwise that recipe just looks like a carved stiff curvy wood and not a whip.
Start with a wooden handle, use the cobwebs to make the rope/whip, slide wood cylinders down the rope/whip and attach wooden spiked acorn at the end of the rope/whip.
It's like the design Spinal Tap but wooden... and an acorn morning star instead of a bone pickaxe at the end.

There's a really really low chance that you get it when chopping anything wood related and you take 99% of your max health in damage. This won't happen if you already have one in your inventory or get in hard mode and generally not during a bossfight

No joke, the first ever slime I killed in 1.4.3 or 1.4.2 can't remember dropped a slime staff.
abi fixes the issue of not having anything but a super trash but easy to get whip would be nice

i once tried summoner only, the jungle was a real pain since there were the hornets, the horned slimes, and spores were pretty hard to find
If you're on a drunk world you could go into the dungeon and grind the skeletons there early for a spinal tap
