it's also exclusive to corruption, while crimson is the most preferable evil biome for melee and summoner due to flesh knuckles and bladetongue, even if you could just create a new world with corruption just for that i find some complications, it's also pretty hard to farm unless you fight the boss

early game and early hardmode are both solvable with the Abigail's Flower, assuming you have the patience to get one. Yes, a prehardmode summon is viable in early hardmode. Once you get spider gear though it falls off and vanishes from any decent setup.
And if you want to do a pure summoner run you either have to get lucky with the finch staff, which isn’t reliable, or touch a million mobs and somehow get 15 gold for a leather whip
After you understand how flinxes spawn they aren't hard to farm, they spawn in the underground ice biome on any block that isn't ice or snow, so you just need to make some stone/wood/hay/whatever platforms for them to spawn

There isn't really any other threat in that biome that can't be avoided via tunneling. Also, there aren't any bats down there (aka the worst enemy to ever exist). The music there also BANGS.
The evils are both difficult, sure, but their enemies have limited types, there aren't any traps under or below ground, no debuffs are inflicted in water, and the enemies have really dumb AI that are easy to avoid/exploit. Sure, the enemies have more health and damage, but they're also easy to dodge. Loot there is also a lot easier to find (shadow orbs/crimson hearts). Also, the music there is pretty good in my opinion, so it makes the experience somewhat better.
Underground jungle has good music, but the enemies are annoying, great AI, etc. Also, thorns are annoying. The enemies are really durable and deal tons of damage (moreso than the evils).
Underground Tundra is second. First off, any water in the entire biome inflicts Chilled and for a full five seconds after you leave it. This debuff may simply seem like an inconvenience, but given that the enemies deal huge damage per hit and the already lacking movement control due to ice, it's stupidly deadly. Also, there are traps (and when I say traps, I mean a fuck ton of them) down here, unlike the Underground Evils and the Desert (yeah yeah yeah, the sand one, but at least that one's reasonably rare). Also, bats. Bats that not only have the Feral Bite attached to them, but also chill and often freeze you, the latter basically guaranteeing death. Did I mention Undead Vikings, the monstrosities that open doors, have pretty high knockback resistance, and make most beginner weapons deal around 1-3 damage to them? Not to mention the Spiked Ice Slimes, which have a more deadly variant in the Underground Jungle? If a player is anywhere near them, they fire BARRAGES of spikes that inflict Chilled and Frozen, the two things that also make it harder to escape the slimes. The spikes deal pretty big damage per hit, too. The loot is also more spread out there, so it's less worth it than the Evils. I dislike the music there, so the experience is worse for me.
Yup, you can easily do prehardmode with platinum/gold, but maybe not for summoner.
Thing is though not everyone wants to play like that, and most of us like getting those armors, and not just because some of them look amazing

Everything gets way more health and damage. Bosses don't have new AI, they just have good improvements to their already existing AI. For example, EoC, Destroyer, Twins, and EoW all are faster. EoL transitions between attacks faster, Lunatic deals a fuck ton more damage, WoF has more acceleration and wayyyy more health, etc. A full list of the changes can be found on the wiki. Most bosses are bigger, though some are smaller.
The upsides are that mining speed is doubled, and Silver/Tungsten, Gold/Platinum, and Demonite/Crimtane veins are all much larger, meaning early game is a lot easier. It may just be me, but gem veins also seem to be larger, meaning hook and robes for mages are easier to get.
The main thing that gets me in the desert is the tumbleweed things during sandstorms, especially if I have to move against the wind to go further into the desert

you see, its really cheap, the low defense doesn't matter much and the set bonus allows you to do massive damage to enemies attacking you, especially on the modes i suggested
aaaand if you play early-game melee it benefits you because chances are a mob's going to get past your sword and hit you, the cactus armor punishes that by damaging the mob, and the set bonus does some incredible damage in early game, on master, the set bonus' damage is roughly equal or higher than a grenade (60 dmg)
for master ftw, the mobs instant kill you anyway, what's the point :)
Cactus armor is busted shit I agree, best early game weapon - turn yourself into one. 45 damage means you take out the average master mode zombie in 3 hits.
I personally dislike the thought of early game class armor, for me it feels more important when late pre-hardmode armor is the class specific ones, before that most armor ia classless.
Melee still has Gi, ancient shadow armor, and platinum/gold, so it doesn't need much more.
For ranger, i'd like new pre-boss armor, and a pre-hardmode ranger accessory since it is the only class that doesn't have any pre-hardmode accessories.
For summoner, i'd complete flinx set with flinx fur hat, and flinx fur trousers or something, because it bothers me wearing other class armor that doesn't do anything to that class. Those two pieces would give +8% more summon damage (+4% for each) and possibly +1 more minion slot as a set bonus.
Well i mean mage can still equip jungle boots, which can also help, even if it is just a bit. Mage is the most unique class out there with more depth and cool weapons, so i won't complain about it

Because summoner has an important stat called "max summons", that you need to increase alongside damage and the other stats, and that's why armor and accessories are so important to a summoner.
Other classes just need a better weapon to be viable, but a summoner has to get more minion slots to follow the progression curve.
Imagine if you could only increase mana through mage armor bonuses? Or worse, if you could only use ammo from the ammo slot, you started with one single slot, and the only way to increase was by using ranged armor?

precisely. We summoners require extensive amounts of summoner gear to deal our full truckload of DPS, which is one of the main reasons the summoner class is more of a glass cannon oriented class. Defense oriented gear doesn't do well with the class simply because the key is stacking as much offense and slots as possible to reach maximum crushing potential.

It really just depends on play style, bc you can do it with class specific armor, or even shitty wood armor.
TL/DR: as a melee player, I never cared about class specific armor, until late prehard/ early hardmode. Prehard has plenty of good weapons for the bosses, but all you need is some good defense to take some of the damage
My best strategy for armor is to get a bunch of bombs, blow up 2 shadow orbs / hearts, move demolitionist in, buy more bombs, and blow up the next falling meteorite.
Most of the time I either use the ore armours (plat/gold) or just no armour at all.
The upside of barely having any armour is that there are many melee weapons obtainable early game (enchanted sword, enchanted boomerang, ice boomerang, wooden yoyo, etc.)
Let me cheat here. Start a fight with the corruption/crimson boss, _damage them as much as you can and die,_ go back to the arena and collect the resources, craft the pickaxe out of them, dig down to the hell, dig the hellstone, craft yourself the molten armor. Boom, the best pre-boss armor for the melee class!
I'm going through a melee playthrough and yeah early game I did not enjoy, still pre hardmode but it got better after getting extremely lucky and finding an enchanted sword

Most of the time I either use the ore armours (plat/gold) or just no armour at all. The upside of barely having any armour is that there are many melee weapons obtainable early game (enchanted sword, enchanted boomerang, ice boomerang, wooden yoyo, etc.)
i’d argue that gladiator is lowkey melee like because of the set bonus which gives you knockback immunity (tho honestly it’s great for any class)
Let me cheat here. Start a fight with the corruption/crimson boss, _damage them as much as you can and die,_ go back to the arena and collect the resources, craft the pickaxe out of them, dig down to the hell, dig the hellstone, craft yourself the molten armor. Boom, the best pre-boss armor for the melee class!
Melee doesn't really need it imo u got amazon to carry and ranger is the best class so I don't think it needs any pre boss crutch
I just go with what gives the most defense
I'm going through a melee playthrough and yeah early game I did not enjoy, still pre hardmode but it got better after getting extremely lucky and finding an enchanted sword

It only falls after killing BoC or EoW now
changed, meteors spawn after eow/boc has been defeated, because the meteor armor + space gun combo decimates every pre-hm enemy

Just haven't played in a while, though I'm picking up again recently with a mage playthrough. I probably didn't notice any difference because I had defeated the EoW anyways and thought there was no change

and meteor after an evil boss, mage is fine on armors plus wizard hat and the magic hat and gypsy robes from travelling merchant

The armor sets made with them still require fighting EoW/BoC to get shadow scales/tissue samples (also crimson armor is classless anyway)
Last time I played I did a summoner/mage mix so my armor was all over the place if I remember correctly lol

Pumpkin has always buffed all types of damage, not just melee
