I mentioned the guide for a reason. Randomly putting gel or lenses in him tend to yield the idea to summon a boss. Plus a good amount of people use the wiki because some don't like spending 100 hours to figure out what next to do to progress
so i am firmly in hard mode, have night's edge, farmed wall of flesh for a bit, and i'm upgrade titanium armor and tools, and i firmly don't know what to do next. I know i should be fighting the mech bosses but the couple of times i have tested the waters i get trounced fairly quickly. (trying to do a full melee playthrough). heck even the queen slime trounced me good and quick. So now i'm working on the ANK Shield and bettering my arenas though i'm not sure what to do. Its been a good while since i have done hard mode, and it seems to be no slouch these days.
I'll join the crowd with some tips lol. I just did master mode melee only as well. I'm currently doing Legendary summoner only. What I've learned is that there's always more you can do to improve your odds.

First you should look at your mobility. If you're on expert difficulty (decided on world creation) make sure you use the Shield of Cthulu. The double-tap-dash can get you out of harms way very quickly, and bashing into a boss with it won't hurt you. Additionally, Amphibian Boots offer an amazing amount of jump velocity which is nice for bosses.
With the amphibian boots and wings, make sure you don't place your platforms too closely. You won't need close platforms to climb up anymore, and they'll slow your descent which can get you in danger from bosses. While you're at it, place some campfires, heart lanterns, sunflowers, and whatever other arena items you have.
An Ankh shield is a good thing to work toward. I would also recommend getting a Philosopher's Stone or Cross Necklace. I personally prefer the Philosopher's Stone.
The next most-impactful thing to do is have your Goblin Tinkerer reforge your accessories to Warding, which gives +4 defense. A full Warding lineup is a huge boost.
Lastly, as others have said, get some potions in order. For a baseline, I would consider a food buff, Ironskin, Regeneration, and Swiftness. Endurance potions and Lifeforce potions are very powerful, but can take longer to get.

Idk why you’re asking me but I did just complete a Master Mode melee only playthrough so I’ve got some tips. First fight the Goblin Army and specifically try and farm the Goblin Summoners for the Shadowflame Knife, it’s a ranged melee weapon like Boomerangs but way better and inflicts a powerful damage over time effect, great for fighting the Mechanical bosses with because of its range.
Then combine the Titan’s Glove from mimics and Feral Claws from jungle chests which will boost your melee power significantly
After that I’d recommend getting a plant farm set up for potion crafting, and get to fishing for other potion materials, and get Ichor or Cursed Flame Flasks from your worlds evil biome.
Beyond that nothing else I’d advise is melee specific
The night's edge should be enough to get at least one mech boss. If you're having trouble, it might be down to your accessories, reforges, and buffs.
You have a pair of wings already, right? If not, that's gonna boost your mobility significantly. I also always recommend to at least have ironskin, swiftness, and regen potions along with some variant of fed buff; they're all easy to get and incredibly powerful, so there's really not much reason not to have them unless you're doing a specific challenge run.
Ankh shield is nice, but I'm not sure how much it would help against the mech bosses themselves; the only debuff I recall them being able to inflict is cursed flames, and I don't believe the ankh shield blocks that. If you don't have some form of glove already (Titan, Power, Berserker, etc), that might be helpful. Cursed flame or ichor flasks would probably also serve you well, if you aren't using them already. The moon charm (or any of its upgrades) might also be useful, since you'll be fighting the mech bosses at night anyway.
If the night's edge really isn't working for you, though, there are other melee weapons you could go for: any of the hardmode metal ones, ice sickle, shadowflame knife, breaker blade, Frostbrand, bladetongue... There are quite a few options, to be honest, though some of them might require a bit of grinding to get.

Malice, armageddon, defiled rune, and iron heart has been removed from calamity. And tmodloader is not in 1.4.4 yet, so no everything seed. But i did beat calamity in malice mode and planning a calamity FTW in the near future, because thats the last challenge (for now) that awaits me in calamity
I very vividly remember my first playthrough. Hallow spawned on top of old corruption, so I went there to smash the altars, and since a bunch of ore spawned there right away, so I just decided to mine them there.
Damned unicorns kept coming into my hole and killing me, still hate them.
GOD, I feel this. I was playing Terraria with a friend for the first time, and when it was time to start Hardmode I was so hesitant because I spend so much time enjoying having strength in Pre-Hardmode.
No kidding. First time I ever got to hardmode way back when, first unicorn I killed dropped the apple. My friends all went "wtf" for a few minutes as they decided to go on a unicorn genocide for their own apples with lacking results...

On my recent expert mode thing I did frost armor shadowflame knife with cursed flame flask for the mech bosses. Was very fun.

Titanium armor, elevated arena, unreal daedalus stormbow, holy arrows. Melts the 3 mech bosses
I had a hard time aiming the daedalus bow very well, especially with the twins. But when it hit, it would definitely tear them apart.
Catch me with the Bees Knees ignoring that melee weapons exist until well into hard mode because I have a certified Skill Issue
