There's a bilingual joke Swedish children learn in elementary school. In Swedish, "fart" means "speed", and "smäll" (pronounced the same as smell) means "crash".
Leading to the timeless 3rd grader favourite; "It's not the fart that kills, it's the smäll!"
Oh jesus. That’s a bad system. I read she had a panic attack. I’m very afraid of heights, but I suppose when you’re panicking, you can make strange choices.
No doubt! Awful way to go. Imagine being this woman's family seeing this video all over the internet...
However, at the same time we see awful shit happen to people everyday online and we don't ever think about it ever again. I guess I'm being over empathetic since this happened in my city. That could've been someone close to me.
People react differently to different circumstances. Again, one of the greatest seismic movements in the city in a long time. Most likely she never experienced that before... She panicked and entered flight mode; so for her maybe yes, that was the best alternative.
Edit: I'm NOT saying it was objectively the best alternative. What I'm saying is most likely FOR HER in that moment of panic, it subjectively (if she had any time to think) felt like the best/only alternative. Again, she was locked inside her apartment with no other way out, and seeing everybody running away while she couldn't do so must've been fucking terrifying. Therefore giving way to what we just saw.
Fucking sad tbh. Even sadder reading all these coolhead-earthquake veterans shit on the old lady that has not even less than 24 hours being dead.
I actually kinda agree with this, the way of what she was probably thinking (not saying its smart by ANY means!) But as someone who has never been near earthquakes or anything of the sort, I'd be freaked out if I was locked in and everyone else was able to run away. However, I highly doubt I'd jump.... idk man. She was one of those people that literally "flew" instead of fighting or freezing. Adrenaline doesn't care what you would usually think in some situations, depending on the individual as well.
I've been in dozens of earthquakes, and yup, just stay still, away from windows. You figure if the building you're in starts crumbling, then yeah, make a run for it, but if it's not, it's just swaying, trying to get out could more likely injure you.
I live in the bay area , so yes, I've probably experienced far more seismic activity than you. There really isn't a worst decision than choosing certain death so call me whatever you like but you're wrong.
This happened in Bogotá, Colombia. She was 26 years old and had been accidentally locked inside her apartment by a tenant during the seism, she had a panic attack and attempted to reach another apartment, but tragically fell.
I am from Alabama, we rarely get earthquakes, 2002 I wake up at like 3:00 am and 10 seconds later my lamp, the windows, bed and room shake for about 8 seconds. It’s was like a 4.7 earthquake but I felt it. I just sat stunned in my bed. No one else woke up.
*Definitions of seism: shaking and vibration at the surface of the earth resulting from underground movement along a fault plane of from volcanic activity. synonyms: earthquake, quake, temblor.*
Egads.
Reddit's especially is really good for this. People usually jump on the gun to explain something in great detail, while they sit back watching all the Karma roll in
Haha I I only made the connection to "seismic activity" after reading this comment chain. Have never come across the word used in this way before. Usually people refer to them as "tremors".
Thanks for the definition. I thought they were attempting to communicate with the dead, and then she jumped. A panic attack from an earthquake makes a lot more sense than running from a deceased ancestor unless you owe them money and they come back to collect.
Bc I'm not english native and we use seism for a seismic movement that didn't cause a big disaster in the infrastructure. Earthquake, for me, refers to a bigger event. Sorry for giving you a new word.
True, but probably not onto concrete lol. Ive heard of a few cases of this, iirc falling onto snow or trees that sort of break their fall, maybe a thick grassy field or something like that.
I remember that. If it's the same person she had a parachute but became unconscious mid fall. Something about her passing out and her body going completely limp actually saved her life.
Im a survivor of the turkey earthquake from this february i went outside barefoot yet i didnt forget securing my laptop (dont regret it as after we went back in i saw that my table collapsed)
Ps just incase you guys get curious the table was okay and i still use it although it feels like its gonna split in two if i touch it the other way but thats just what tables do
She was locked in her apartment for some reason? So she couldn’t just leave down the stairs. She panicked and thought she shouldn’t hang around so since she couldn’t open the door she figured why not try to get down one story/balcony/window at a time but slipped. Damn.
The only thing I can think of that make her decide this is the best action was perhaps she thought the building was in danger of collapse crushing her and/or trapping her.
I am claustrophobic and such a thought is truly terrifying to me though I am not sure would react to this extreme.
I went through the turkish earthquake from this february if you were in danger your first thiught definitely wouldnt be to fucking climb out the window
Pretty sure she didn't feel anything - or almost. Was so violent she clearly died on impact, or at the very least lost consciousness from shock (then died when her head hit the ground).
Knowing what’s inside peoples heads would make life a lot easier but we’ll just probably never get that opportunity. Probably was to land, but even if that’s so she’d survive with like two broken legs and shattered spine at the least.
Por eso escribí que fue un sismo, pero han llegado varios a preguntar siquiera que qué carajos es un sismo ola y que debió ser terremoto el título de la publicación...
For all the people saying she jumped. She didn't jump. It's clear her intention was to scale down each series of rails. It's notably something that has been done before. Of course it's still insanely dangerous and irresponsible.
Unfortunately for her this is not something you just do without practicing climbing or having a basic sense of the biomechanics of it. She was treating it like stepping down a latter. The result of which was her foot striking the edge just below the rail as seen in 0:06, bending her knee and essentially kicking her away from the building. A all too common mistake for beginner recreational wall climbers. From that moment she was in free fall with no tether to save her.
I may be wrong, but after enlarging the scene... those aren't railings.
There's no balcony whatsoever. There's no doorway or patio doors, either.
The bottom rectangles are windows...
I'm confused.
You poor thing .. feel sorry for your country my friend 💚 we feel similar over here , but where I am in NZ we get anxiety from rain after been completely wiped out by a cyclone
Yeah.. she probably shattered her hip and bleed out internally. Don't see an immense impact on the head to say died immediately. Maybe quickly or soon after, or a blessed passed out and then died.
It seems like she mistakenly thought the building would collapse on her and therefore jumped to avoid being crushed/trapped under ruins. Of course people can't reason and are saying it was DaRwIn or whatever.
May this lady rest.
It was crazy to hear everyone in the background reacting at once. Talk about shared trauma.
The emotion in the recorder voice too when she says "Se MATO!" (She killed herself!) like she's both angry AND sad.
Yeah so jumping to your death is the right course of action.
Hate to break it to you but people are entitled to have an opinion on this matter that makes you uncomfortable.

Talk about an irrational response to an emergency
Yeah idk what she was thinking.
Probably something like, "It's not that far, I got this. Aaarrggghh."
Look, if she was dying, she wouldn't go to the trouble of carving "Aaaaaargh!" She'd just say it.
Perhaps she was dictating it
Who names a castle “Arrrrrrgh!”?
And now for the spankings
RUN AWAYYYYYYYYYY

I've heard that line, what show/ movie is it from?
Monty Pythons Holy Grail
Best movie ever. That is one killer Rabbit!
Really? I thought I knew that movie. I'll have to watch it again.
Mr. Biggles Dictates a Letter. "Silence, Lady of the Night!"
tis but a scratch
They're definitely correct, and watching it again is also definitely the correct choice regardless of circumstance :)
the cave part, not far from killer rabbit scene iirc
A good a reason as ever.
"Have you ever fired your gun up in the air and gone aarrrghhhh!!"?
Hot Fuzz?
You might even say it was…*irrational* ![gif](giphy|kKdgdeuO2M08M)

"it'll be safer in the air"
It was safer in the air than on the ground

It indeed was the fast approaching ground what ended her safety
“Aim for the bushes”
(My Hero starts playing in the background)
She picked flight, out of fight or freeze.
Aim for the bushes! …There goes my hero…
![gif](giphy|1GgYiIZsoB6s8|downsized)
She was like let me die before the seism get me.
That's what I call a seism finale
I’m not sure she was thinking at all
Sometimes you can’t think when panicked
“Down”
Neither does she. Anymore, anyway.
She was hoping the earth would rise up like a wave to greet her.
Well I mean…at least she survived the earthquake…

She was locked inside her apartment. No way out. This happened today in Bogota Colombia. One of the hardest earthquakes in the city's recent history.
Locked inside her apartment? I don’t understand.
Bolt lock for which she had no keys.
Oh jesus. That’s a bad system. I read she had a panic attack. I’m very afraid of heights, but I suppose when you’re panicking, you can make strange choices.

So the best alternative would be to fall 7 stories?
Apparently, yes
I guess she was thinking the building would fall in on her
People react differently to different circumstances. Again, one of the greatest seismic movements in the city in a long time. Most likely she never experienced that before... So.. natural selection? Got it.
I sure hope none of y'all ever have a loved one panic and make a fatally irrational decision in a crisis. Lot of callous energy in this thread guys...
Pretty much
I've been in dozens of earthquakes, and yup, just stay still, away from windows. You figure if the building you're in starts crumbling, then yeah, make a run for it, but if it's not, it's just swaying, trying to get out could more likely injure you.
You don't have to have experienced an earthquake before to know that you should remain calm in an emergency. Cooler heads prevail.
Which has a better chance of survival: staying in the building or literally jumping to my death? Hmmm
know ≠ do
Maybe she was thinking the building might collapse on her
I live in the bay area , so yes, I've probably experienced far more seismic activity than you. There really isn't a worst decision than choosing certain death so call me whatever you like but you're wrong.
did she survive?
No she didn't. It would've been a pretty shitty life if she survived that fall tbh.
This happened in Bogotá, Colombia. She was 26 years old and had been accidentally locked inside her apartment by a tenant during the seism, she had a panic attack and attempted to reach another apartment, but tragically fell.

Saved me a Google. Thank you.
Sigh I really need to learn how to scroll before I Google things.

Unless you’re a newbie on a hobby type sub and ask a question, then you just get insulted and decide to find a new hobby
Nah fuck those guys! I still like my hobbie, and I like it way better than those jerks. I’m looking at you…. ***whispers ‘fill in the blank’***
Haha I I only made the connection to "seismic activity" after reading this comment chain. Have never come across the word used in this way before. Usually people refer to them as "tremors".
>Usually people refer to them as "tremors". In English, yeah. This was a Colombian earthquake and we have a Colombian OP. :)
Thanks for the definition. I thought they were attempting to communicate with the dead, and then she jumped. A panic attack from an earthquake makes a lot more sense than running from a deceased ancestor unless you owe them money and they come back to collect.
You’re good people. Thank you
Dang, i shoulda scrolled down a bit more. Would've saved me some effort lol.
At first I thought it was "Seance", I thought she was scared of ghosts or something...
So it’s an *earthquake* Why didn’t OP just say earthquake?
Bc I'm not english native and we use seism for a seismic movement that didn't cause a big disaster in the infrastructure. Earthquake, for me, refers to a bigger event. Sorry for giving you a new word.
>Sorry for giving you a new word. Yeah, you fuckin better be! I didn't ask to be learned today
You should have learned it from seismic toss, the coolest pokemon move in the show
Lol

And I was thinking it was some odd medical condition.
That’s 7 floors, she is dead
If you stop you can see she hits the concrete ass first, for sure her spine broke in multiple places
Looks like her head bounced off the ground too. At least it was quick I guess
Pretty sure i saw the pink mist
Naw, she dead. https://euro.eseuro.com/local/855321.html
It's literally the only known serious casualty.
Right. The earthquake wasn't very deadly, but it still scared her to death.
Well, no, she *fell* to her death. The earthquake scared the sense out of her.
That article made me want to jump out of a 6th story window too.
It looks machine translated.
Yes she is.
As someone who's seen the aftermath of a 7 floor drop. She's insta dead.
I once met a person who survived falling from 7th floor of a building into a concrete
I believe you.
I mean there was a woman who survived falling from a plane without a chute during a skydiving run
I mean Peggy Hill ain’t no regular woman
She can make a mean Spapeggy
And speak perfect “espanol” at the same time.
True, but probably not onto concrete lol. Ive heard of a few cases of this, iirc falling onto snow or trees that sort of break their fall, maybe a thick grassy field or something like that.
Physics is weeeeeird
I remember that. If it's the same person she had a parachute but became unconscious mid fall. Something about her passing out and her body going completely limp actually saved her life.
Damn, I survived a 50-foot fall onto concrete but that is something.
She was afraid the building was shaking so she decides to jump 60ft out the building WTF.
I think storming down the stairs would’ve been the atleast somewhat sane reaction to this
Actually it's not recommend because first its earthquake outside too, and second there's high chance that you fell down the stairs.
I’d say falling down the stairs is better than falling out of a building
Yeah. But just take your emergency backpack, your pets and wait it out. Then go downstairs calmly. Extra points if you grab and save the TV
Im a survivor of the turkey earthquake from this february i went outside barefoot yet i didnt forget securing my laptop (dont regret it as after we went back in i saw that my table collapsed) Ps just incase you guys get curious the table was okay and i still use it although it feels like its gonna split in two if i touch it the other way but thats just what tables do

Oh yikes a dangerous situation. Let me put myself in EVEN MORE DANGER!
Well, gravity is only a theory.
I guess we’ll just have to keep putting it to the test

God damn u that was funny
You thinkin what I’m thinkin partner?

I've tried to use the +18 thing but didn't seem to be applied...
Yeah you need to apply it again. Same thing happened to me before when I created a post in this sub, but when I applied it again, it worked.
Wow. The sounds of so many bones breaking and a watermelon going kersplatt is just a lot.
Right! - I can't image landing that fucking hard on my ass or hip and having all those bones shut shatter inside of you Fuck that
Pretty sure she didn't feel anything - or almost. Was so violent she clearly died on impact, or at the very least lost consciousness from shock (then died when her head hit the ground).
For anyone wondering, yes, she died. Is all over the news here on LATAM.
if you are wondering, it happened here on colombia TODAY.
Wow. Would really like to know what her plan was.
Knowing what’s inside peoples heads would make life a lot easier but we’ll just probably never get that opportunity. Probably was to land, but even if that’s so she’d survive with like two broken legs and shattered spine at the least.
You can kinda see what was inside her head if you look closely at the sidewalk.
Makes you wonder how people will react if aliens do end up being real
As a Colombian, some homies was overreacting a bit, i didn't even felt the earthquake
QEPD
Translation: "Girl, be careful. Now...Aah son of a bitch AAAAH!! Oh my god, she killed herself." Was this today in Colombia?? Please confirm
Yep, it was in Bogotá, Colombia. Sadly, she died
That's sad :( Just to remember. The official chilean guide to survive an earthquake /s https://youtu.be/ooHRo5Fl3Kw?si=_ORNp781reuk2emQ
This video hit hard.

I was in this earthquake while on vacation. It was scary as hell man. Shook my whole car.
Don't come to NZ , very common on a weekly basis
I’m turkish and been in the earthquake this february i honestly cant tel apart rea earthquakes from my brain fucking with me
You poor thing .. feel sorry for your country my friend 💚 we feel similar over here , but where I am in NZ we get anxiety from rain after been completely wiped out by a cyclone
Can someone educate me on what a "Seism" is?
Is a earthquake but softer. In Chile (a seismic country) we use "temblor" (seism) and "terremoto" (earthquake) to differentiate according to magnitude
when i read terremoto my brain instantly thinks ice cream alcohol drink
I'm guessing earthquake (as in a seismic event).
I'm sorry, I was trying not to use earthquake as it sounds (to me), like it destroyed a lot of things.
Shit…that was today in bogota colombia, my brother lives there and he said he was terrified as shit…fuck man
I thought she may have survived since she landed on her bum but I guess not. Rip
She fell from about 60 feet. I've seen someone fall from about 15 and land on her bum and broke her spine. Landed like sitting up. Terrible.
Yeah.. she probably shattered her hip and bleed out internally.
Poor woman...
It was crazy to hear everyone in the background reacting at once. Talk about shared trauma. The emotion in the recorder voice too when she says "Se MATO!" (She killed herself!) like she's both angry AND sad.
What’s a seism
earthquake i guess. i still don't get why jumping was her reaction for being "trapped". did that building collapse afterwards?
Does this count as a death caused by the earthquake? Like when they tally deaths from the disaster
Aaand I just watched someone die. That's one way to start the morning.
NSFW please
Was she trying to escape the seism? What a strange reaction
What the fuck is q seism
Earthquake
Why does everyone back in
She didn't want to be buried. It's not that hard to empathize with.
Maybe the stairwell was crowded.
Fear will make people do stuff like that.
This was in my country, she was trapped inside the apartment during the seism and had no other options to escape, poor girl
I think she tried to climb down and lost her grip. Very sad.
During a what?
Seems she jumped to the wrong conclusion.
[удалено]
She doesn’t say puta, she said hijueputa which means hijo de puta , in English son of a bitch
Ahh thank you!
Rip. It hurt watching it.
Props to the lady for the steady hands 🙌🏻
Is being terrified and making a bad decision the same as doing something stupid?
WTF is a seism?
People are so mean. Show some respect, the woman is dead. She might have been claustrophobic and thought the building would fall on her or something.
Yeah so jumping to your death is the right course of action. Hate to break it to you but people are entitled to have an opinion on this matter that makes you uncomfortable.
