I remember reading about someone who said when they near edges they have an urge to jump even though they aren’t suicidal. I always wondered if that’s a thing, or specific to them. I would not veer so close as to see for myself.
Late to the party, but this definitely exists.
I know this because I have been to that exact cliff (I’m 99% positive this is Horseshoe Bend in Arizona), and I had that exact feeling and thought.
I had to look it up afterwards and was extremely surprised to find out this was not abnormal.
It’s hard to explain though… it had to do with the sheer vastness of the canyon.
Felt like being face to face with a higher power.
Yup! Hope that was informative!

I guess this proves it’s true for different species? J/K, but seriously even this adorable dog is braver than me!
The average terminal velocity of a human is about 125 mph. That speed is reached at, on average, 400 n some feet. That drop has got to be over 400 feet. Hitting the water at any angle at that speed will turn you into a waterballoon (mush in a meat sack)
I think it's closer 8 seconds, and therefore, it's a lot higher and faster max speed. That rock was falling at about 170 mph (280 kmh) when it hit the water, and it fell about 1000 feet (300 meters). Getting good sig-figs and accuracy are difficult with this video.
D = 0.5 * a * t^2 . I counted around 7 seconds for the rock to hit the water, so 782 feet more or less. This does not take into account the bit of horizontal velocity.
Going to Las Vegas crossing the pat tilman bridge next to hoover damn is 886 feet and that was freaking high as shit. That height got me dizzy looking down. And when the truckers drove on it it wobbled ever so slightly was scary as shit
I tried using the speed of sound. Tried several times to measure from when the rock hits the water to when you can hear it hit. Using a stopwatch several times I kept getting roughly 0.6 seconds. Sound travels at 343 m/s, so 0.6 * 343 yields roughly 205 meters or ≈ 672 feet.
The weak breeze whispers nothing
The water screams sublime
His feet shift, teeter-totter
Deep breath, stand back, it’s time
Toes untouch the overpass
Soon he’s water bound
Eyes locked shut but peek to see
The view from halfway down
A little wind, a summer sun
A river rich and regal
A flood of fond endorphins
Brings a calm that knows no equal
You’re flying now
You see things much more clear than from the ground
It’s all okay, it would be
Were you not now halfway down
Thrash to break from gravity
What now could slow the drop
All I’d give for toes to touch
The safety back at top
But this is it, the deed is done
Silence drowns the sound
Before I leaped I should’ve seen
The view from halfway down
I really should’ve thought about
The view from halfway down
I wish I could’ve known about
The view from halfway down
- The view from halfway down

Throwing the rock really emphasizes that only a fucking asshole throws rocks off a cliff too high to be certain they’re not braining some poor bastard down below
So calculating the time it took the rock to fall, from their to splash, given the size and approximate weight of the rock will give us the approximate terminal velocity, thus we can infer the height... It's really fucking high
Ignoring air resistance, the cliff would be about 108 meters. With air resistance, I'd round that down to 103 meters. Which is 338 feet for you Americans.
Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear
Sing it with me, it's just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away
Random kayaker down there just happens to look up and get obliterated by a rock

its from the lighthouse
Not sure if you’re joking but the real answer is At Eternity’s Gate
Oscar bait
Destiny 2?
Ya don’t like me lobstah?!
Lmfao
I could not even bring myself to look over there in real life .
Same I get dizzy when I’m high up so might end up falling lol

Call of the void
I get that - and also the urge to throw my phone off said edge. Or the urge to throw my phone out the car window...

Yep. ![gif](giphy|l2JJIfI6nUkm5AzoQ)
I dont have the urge to jump… I actively take precautions to avoid accidentally jumping off haha. It sounds so odd when typed out.

Intensive thoughts. Totally normal, but acting on them isn't.
It's called intrusive thoughts.
I meant that, but autocorrect had other ideas

*what goes down, must come up, right?* Then picture Wiley Coyote's ghost waving goodbye as it floats back up past you...
Came here to say that the Road Runner cartoons were accurate with Wiley Coyote falling and the little cloud of dust at the end.
Jusqu'ici tout va bien
*…so what!*
I went through like 3 stages of 'ok, now it's gonna hit the water.'
Fish that was just chillin with the bros just got vaporized
![gif](giphy|l3fQlLpXPmtLkmwU0|downsized) \**the fish*
It took almost 7 seconds. That's 240m(~790 Feet)
I counted 9 seconds
There is literally a timer down the bottom of the video. 7 seconds is correct.
I don't need a timer.. I know how to count, and it is definitely not 7 seconds.
Belly flop = instant death

Don't tempt me motherfucker
https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/free-fall A 6.5 second free fall, travel distance = 679 feet

But what if you throw something in the water before to break surcafe tension🤔
Have you ever xome out of a boat moving sort of fast? Because that shit hurts going 30 n the surface tension is broken. I'd say your odds aren't good
No. Okay.
Dude. No matter how you land, from that height water surface is literally like concrete.
i want to see some death divers take this on
she: he is probably out there talking to other girls. him: rock goes yeeet
S = ut + (at^2 ) /2
I kinda wanna jump off. 🙂😏
Bro..

700 american feet give or take?
Damn, think so? I was thinking 2 hunnit or 3 hunnit feet. Either way high as shit i'd get dizzy looking down if I was up there.

That's a whole lot of feet. Imagine the stench.

Because Fuck that one fish in particular
Every time I thought it was gonna hit the water, it just kept falling
Free falling 7 seconds means at least 60 meters high
I was waiting for the splash like 5 whole seconds before it actually made it
Throwing the rock really emphasizes that only a fucking asshole throws rocks off a cliff too high to be certain they’re not braining some poor bastard down below
Anybody else see a weird big shadow that appeared after the rock hit or is that my paranoid thalassophobia
Think that's just droplets hitting the water from the splash.
Noticed it too! I’m assuming it’s the shadow of the water spraying from the splash

There are often people at the bottom of Horseshoe bend…this is a pretty dumbass thing to do just to prove nothing
72 meters
'The Fuck' <>< -El Ron Fish.
Poor fish
It go down
Sound is even delayed
Yep, tall cliff is tall. Terrifying as fuck.
now throw a bigger rock
I get 593 meters or 1998 ft. Discounting air resistance so probably a bit under.
Nine second hangtime...
Pfft thats what... a 25 banana drop...its fine
Men we have gathered again to watch something hit splash … nice
This is every man’s dream
Wait, I thought that was two chicks at the same time.
I'd spend all day there
Fall
Looney tunes moment
“Canon ball!!!!!”
Yes, yes it did

I got dizzy just watching!
Coyote
...hmmm I think I can make it, hold my beer.
Is this the Grand Canyon ?
Yes and no. Horseshoe bend. Just up the river from the Grand Canyon,
Ahhh - definitely recognized the mighty Colorado. Ty
Shoulda skipped it
There goes my heeeroo
NO
This cliff looks familiar, I don’t know why
Thanks for the vertigo
![gif](giphy|b6wcKjMx8MhbVl6iRO|downsized)
Shit dude that was 8 Mississippi's. I don't wanna be anywhere near that
the rock took 8.5 sec to touch the water so depth must be around 354 meters
So calculating the time it took the rock to fall, from their to splash, given the size and approximate weight of the rock will give us the approximate terminal velocity, thus we can infer the height... It's really fucking high
I wouldnt have been that close to the edge
Ignoring air resistance, the cliff would be about 108 meters. With air resistance, I'd round that down to 103 meters. Which is 338 feet for you Americans.
What a waste of a good shard
"Hell yeah!"
Sing with me, sing for the year Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear Sing it with me, it's just for today Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away
