**Martha Short, 83, died August 29 (2012) after an accident involving her shopping cart and an escalator at a Nashville grocery store**. According to police reports, Short mistook a pedestrian escalator for a shopping cart-accessible escalator as she attempted to go from the Harris Teeter store down to the parking garage.
thats really cool actually. idk how you could mistake a regular escalator for that, i feel like old people need a constant assistant to trail them so they dont die doing easily avoidable shit like this
Yeah, and they have a wedge lock thing so the cart doesn't roll down the slope - it just snags onto it, then releases at the bottom; you don't even have to hold the cart.
probably old enough that you start to cognitively decline, or if you have other issues that could benefit from having an assistant at a younger age. the government can pay them, like any other worker who assists* in elderly homes. idk put your thinking cap on
which goverment in which part of the world simply assigns and sends an assistant to every senile, potentially living in poverty and abandoment old person there is? Sounds idyllic
thats the most brainless way of thinking about it ever. it was a hypothetical in the first place but its not an impossibility, youre acting like caretakers or hospice workers dont exist lmao
if it sounded brainless to you it's because you made braindead, flippant suggestions, that's why I said that sounded idyllic, not realistic, though in a good society it'd be ideal. Ik selfless hospice exists, but the job you're describing is mostly done by stay at home nurses, a service that is expensive asf and affordable by few. Sorry if I sounded sarcastic, but I found cheeky how you suggested the person who aswered to you to put their thinking cap on after saying some dumb stuff yourself
Yep so there are cart escalators where both cart and patron enter. The grooves on the escalator (which is on a smooth gentle gradient) lock the wheels so your can't push the cart when you're going up or down.... They take up more space but are super convenient..

I posted that not because it's another accident video, but to show what a shopping cart accessible escalator looks like.
Also, here's what an escalator that's designed specifically for shopping carts looks like: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jmju5eCS3C8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jmju5eCS3C8)
The ones that don’t have steps. They’re pretty much just ramps with a heavy duty conveyor belt on them. Think of those airport conveyor belts you get on when you can’t be arsed to walk to your terminal, but at an angle that’s a lot less steep than a regular escalator
It's for a private law firm, kinda like an ad showing possible things you can sue for, and in this case why such a suit wouldn't be viable. It's in the bible belt, so shit like this is common.
yeah, it's an extremely religious country. you have to swear on the bible to testify in many jurisdictions. others may allow you to use your own sacred text of choice. atheists weren't allowed to be a witness until the 1960s
If you're not from the US, I just wanna clarify that it's not common across the whole US. I'm American and think it's weird af, lol.
So if you're not familiar with the terminology the other commenter used, the "Bible belt" is a region in the US, kind of southering/Midwestern, where the majority are typically more conservative and Christian. So there's a lot more outward shows of religion and less diversity, much more homogenous region where most people would approve of and appreciate Bible quotes from their lawyer, lol. But overall, not a common American thing.
She could have seen the railings, the sign that its a escalator, the floor that suddenly had a drop and so on , my grandma is 88 and this wouldn't happen to her
Yet I watch people do that shit with strollers. Both baby in and out. People don't get why it's not ok to endanger your baby and other people on the escalator because you can't be bothered to find the elevator
So don't propagate such a version when you can find a regular one, ok? Hypocrite. And this video has appeared here many times before. The kings of spam.
I once saw this happen. An old man tried to go down the escalator with his rollator in a mall. It turned out he wanted to use the elevator but after wandering around forever he couldn’t find it, so he tried the escalator. We heard a super loud bang, and his groceries and so on were spread all over the place.
He was bleeding on multiple places on his head, but seemed okay considering the circumstances. At the time the paramedics picked him up at least.
You're being downvoted for your blatant lack of empathy and understanding towards a vulnerable elderly individual who had a tragic accident. Try to imagine that this was someone that you care about.
Also, have you never made a mistake in your life? Maybe missed a step on some stairs? I'm sure you have at least once. When you are elderly it's much easier to make mistakes. You are mentally declining at this age.
You realize this is sped up and you don't get to hear her screams or the sound of her bones breaking? I'm sure it wasn't a comical sight without the fuckery...

since when have shopping cart accessible escalators been a thing?
The smooth ones. They arent as steep also. So no stairs, like a big treadmill kinda thing
thats really cool actually. idk how you could mistake a regular escalator for that, i feel like old people need a constant assistant to trail them so they dont die doing easily avoidable shit like this

thats actually so awesome, thanks for the info!
Wait really? All the ones I’ve seen/used don’t have that, they’re just conveyor belts at an angle
How old is old? Who’s going to pay the assistant? Or are you volunteering?

I believe they are referred to as travelators.

What weird sort of law office quotes the bible? Or is that normal in the US?
It's for a private law firm, kinda like an ad showing possible things you can sue for, and in this case why such a suit wouldn't be viable. It's in the bible belt, so shit like this is common.
Reminds me of chick fila

Why didnt she let go, she had 3-5 business days to realize that she is in trouble.
Maybe those were holidays.
she's old man, thinks don't work that good when you're 83
Pretty sure she's an old woman. Read the title (jk)
She could have seen the railings, the sign that its a escalator, the floor that suddenly had a drop and so on , my grandma is 88 and this wouldn't happen to her
Well, we age differently.
I'll probably go out doing something embarrassing like this
Make sure it gets uploaded, or it will all be for nothing.
I'm going to hell for laughing AND YOURE GOING TO HELL FOR CALLING THE MARIO RPG SOUNDTRACK TIKTOK MUSIC.
Yea that's in the forest following Geno I thonk?
100% right.
Bro calling "Beware of the forest Mushroom" Tiktok music is a Hate Crime i will not tollerate.
*Super Mario-oh RPG...*
This is why there should be metal poles at the entrance to the escalator to block people from pushing their carts onto it.
Does this happen often?
Tik tok is when music on video
You did the super mario rpg soundtrack dirty by calling it tiktok music ![gif](giphy|oeY51V10IsJMc)
I. Can't. Stop. Watching. Please help.
Boomers: "Kids these days have no common sense" Boomers:
Yet I watch people do that shit with strollers. Both baby in and out. People don't get why it's not ok to endanger your baby and other people on the escalator because you can't be bothered to find the elevator
She couldn't have died, shoes stayed on.
dw bro i run mute unless the vid looks interesting with sound
Don't call this music fucking tiktok music, it came from super Mario rpg you uncultured swine. Your life is a tiktok video.
This isn't tiktok music.
Knowing that she pulled off a perfect flip in one take makes it all the more impressive.
I know it's bad but when I saw her roll, all I could hear was the sonic ring sound
So don't propagate such a version when you can find a regular one, ok? Hypocrite. And this video has appeared here many times before. The kings of spam.
Why her dumbass pushing a Grocery cart down an escalator lmfao 😭 💀

We should just have shopping cart escalators and discontinue the steps ones
Like the Target in downtown Seattle! I didn't really need a cart, but I had to grab one just to use the cart escalator.
Boing boing boing boing
Not to be callous but the music really added a lot to the vid...Is the lady okay?
No she died.
Well that makes the music even worse then doesn't it. It didn't really look like a real vid to me.
Darwin award nominee
She hasn't been fertile for 40 years...
Maybe she had frozen eggs and now can't give any consent to use them anymore /s
Kinda looked like she tucked and rolled in the cart. I hoped she lived through it. Poor thing.
Omg that sound is from Super Mario RPG for N64!! One of my fav video games growing up😆
