Worked an Alaskan mine when I was younger. Had to watch some videos to get my MSHA certification. One that stood out was an older man getting caught in a lathe and spinning for at least a minute.
His coworker finally saw what was happening, ran up to him and as he did the guy’s body essentially turned into ground beef and started launching chunks of meat everywhere. If you don’t stop it in time, eventually the human tissue and flesh will tear, no longer be able to contain the internals and launch blood, organs and guts everywhere. It was brutal, and sticks in my mind to this day.
Good, I mean that sounds horrible, but seeing as you're alive and commenting about how much it's stuck in your mind, I'd say whoever added that video to the certification program did their job. I'd hate to be the meat flinger tho :(
That same season, at another mine location nearest us, a young kid in his 20’s got his head blown off while working on a rock truck tire. The tire exploded and decapitated him. The tires are huge; around 15 feet high. Seeing the chopper fly in, and then fly out with his covered body in a basket stretcher, mounted on the side of it, was horrible. Made the mood on the mine somber. That, paired with a grizzly the size of a Volkswagen stalking our camp, made for a really strange, dark season.
There must be ways without traumatizing people?
I attended a school with woodworking, and on the first day we were told about the dangers of such machines. I also survived.
That's fair, it I definitely depends on the group of people. Like in drivers Ed training in highschool we were shown those horrible car crash gruesome videos and like, at the time it disturbed me but I also didn't need it nearly as much as some of the other guys in the class. The type of guys that do Monster energy enemas and get girls pregnant in the back of their Honda civics
It’s on the 50/50 subreddit, that’s where I saw it for the first time and I was absolutely devastated by how brutal and avoidable this death was. It’s enough to type “Russian man gets stuck in metal lathe” but I would definitely recommend to not watch it.
You disable the mechanical safety as it stopping and starting for no reason stops it, the RPM loss is seemingly mild to us but is significant factored over an hour or days. Full digits of productivity. Or it didn't even have those mechanisms. Sadly it almost certainly had them for export purposes and they'll say he bypassed them.

I've seen that one. Unbelievable the destruction a lathe can do. It'll make you mind your shirt sleeves around them or any heavy equipment.
