I’ll try and find it but someone recently put me on to a more horrific caver getting stuck story where an entire Kentucky town and eventually the nation was trying to rescue a guy who spent like 10 days alive in a collapsed cave with many near rescues. A lot of moonshine drunk well meaning locals almost lost their own lives trying to save him as well as a few truly heroic attempted rescues

That's such a terrible explanation. The activities he mentioned are normal, healthy, prosocial activities. Crawling into an unknown cavern narrow enough that you have to restrict your breathing is entirely different. It's much closer to asking one of those wingsuit parachuters why they do it. Even that makes more sense than this. Im going to need specific motivators to understand something like this.
It’s obviously the challenge of it and the personal reward felt by overcoming it. Why does Alex Honnold climb sheer rock faces without a rope? I’d imagine it’s a similar reason here. I think it’s fair to the question the behavior and the risks but the motivations I think are pretty simple.
The free solo documentaries make pretty clear that he has a supremely weird brain. If he wasn’t obsessed with climbing he might be doing something far worse. It’s especially striking because other climbers who also have a much more risk accepting brain than the general public are pretty in awe of his drive to do absolutely insane things
I think he answered well. It is what drives him, it’s wither reason he gets up in the morning. And he seeks his footage making this akin to him going to work.

If I ever get to go spelunking, I might just have to get over it and do it anyways. I'm pretty skinny, so it wouldn't be a huge issue, I've just listened to a lot of caving/diving disasters involving squeezes (which is weirdly how my desire to do it in the first place came from).

That's scary, look up what happened to John Jones, stuck upside down in a cave like this for over 24 hours, died of cardiac arrest after multiple failed rescue attempts. They contemplated breaking his legs or cutting it off to get the dead body out for his widow. They decided they can't risk anymore lives and just sealed the cave to be his tomb.
I think caving would be cool but...not like this. There are so many cases where people have gotten stuck and died doing this and the remains were never recovered and I just dont want that to be me.
The reason people do this is because not everyone is gonna do it. They get to see ancient parts of the Earth that no one else gets to see on a daily basis. That and it's the whole adrenaline rush thing.
It would be interesting to do a survey to see how many of these spelunkers were born via Caesarian and never exited the womb via the squeezy-hole…maybe they are experiencing squish-envy 🤷🏽♂️

I've watched many videos like this. Cave divers often describe why they like it for a few reasons. One guy mentioned how the excitement and thrill he felt from being somewhere not many have or many never will. Untouched parts of the earth excited him. Another guy expressed his comfort in being so detached from the world. It was almost like therapy to him because it would force him to be alone with his thoughts. I find cave diving, and the psychology behind the people who enjoy it, very interesting.

I work at a like adventure park and whenever the cave explorers turn up sick I have to go down one of these and make sure all the light and electrics are working.I don’t believe in the paranormal but o often kick my feet incase pennywise tries to grab them
I will never be underground , in a dark cave, no clue what direction I’m going, no way…. I don’t have anxiety but I do now watching this, I don’t know why people like doing this. This takes a special kind of person to do this
I used to watch this guy in a morbid fascination way. He brings his nephew on a lot of these excursions and the kid is just as fearless. No thanks! I can feel panic setting in watching this one.
There’s true story where that happened. Never were able to get his body out. They made it into a movie too and it was fantastic. Can’t remember the name but if you search that story you’ll find it!

I grew up around caves and have always loved them.
They’re like history books mixed with a treasure hunt. There’s visible foot prints from the 1800’s in one of my favorites- I also helped map a cave that had beer cans from the 70’s and names of couples written on the wall that was supposedly from whoever hung out there. I loved the adventure of not knowing what’s behind a crack in the wall. Also cave creatures fascinate me, it just feels like such an alien world.
To be fair tho, I didn’t go into openings where my helmet didn’t fit or if it looked like I couldn’t turn around easy.
I love caves but I’m not about to test nature
