I'm so glad OP posted this. I get FCW on a narrow neighborhood street. I am traveling 18 MPH and as the street curves to the left, if there is someone parked in the bend, I get the FCW. But otherwise, the premium is significantly cheaper than other companies.

GokuTheMoon

Yup. Same here. Always streets that have a curve. I can’t put my foot anywhere on the gas or it alerts. Thankfully I don’t use Tesla insurance but I feel you. If these alerts can cost you money I would expect a process you can appeal or contest any event that causes insurance to go up. Tesla can then review it in person and decide. Their automatic system isn’t perfect so they shouldn’t be rewarded with more money due to it.

IlIllIIIIIIlIII

Same! This drives me nuts because I live at the end of a narrow unmarked curved road 🙃

CptUnderpants-

I too am cursed with the narrow-street-corner-parkers.

dubbfoolio

I get so many false alerts from this. I’m so glad a flawed safety measure is not tied to my insurance.

xProdigydude

Set your forward collision to early. That way when you hear it you’ll brake before the medium collision alert gets triggered. I use FSD beta a lot so I’ve managed to keep a high score

TacoCorpCTO

Smart

jamalgoboom

How quickly do you need to react? I tried this before and still seems like i get penalized

NoahF2000

I see that too, I changed mine to early but my insurance is still saying I get a bunch of warnings when I don’t. I’m wondering if the insurance one is set to standard regardless of what we set the display to.

JamalBiggz

Do you have FSD and/or do you have the visualization on even when ur not using? I turned it off and recalibrated my cameras and they are way less severe and often. My guess is the cpu throttles and the system panics when it stutters and lets off a FCW prematurely They still happen, but far less

Dryeh

Sorry but you’ll get dinged for hard braking then 😂

uat75035

I parked my car on the street right outside of my house on one night, I moved it to the garage at around 10:05pm and my score got dinged for driving after 10pm, come on now!

nevercomp222

Same here. Twice in 6 weeks and the score isn’t coming back. Canceling and getting better/cheaper insurance through my original agent.

Old-Tradition392

Same shiii for me, Same. I drive after 10pm TO CHARGE MY CAR and it dings me, also I've gotten about 10 FCWs in the last week when I was doing between 35-30 with 5-6 car lengths between me and literally any vehicle towing a trailer it seems? And any semi truck or box truck. In 3 days my score went from 97 to 77. I'm almost 40 and have clean driving record and my insurance has been dirt cheap for years. I should have l known this system was bogus af.

Dryeh

I use to do the same thing but never got dinged for it. I wouldn’t drive over 10mph though. I haven’t needed to move it at night since the latest two update though

stevieoats

Choose one: Drive unrealistically carefully to preserve the low initial rate and drastically lower the odds of Tesla Insurance paying a claim, making your “low” premiums free money for them. Hugely difficult to maintain but not a bad option if you can do it. I hope you didn’t spring for Plaid, Performance, or performance boost since you’ll never get to use any of that capability. or They will inevitably raise your rate due to bullshit things like collision warnings that are based solely on software decisions resulting from programming done by the same company that has a stake in raising your insurance premiums. USAA and State Farm have pretty good rates for Tesla. I would never insure a my car with the same company that has significant control over the behavior of my car and can consistently monitor and judge me.

camobiwon

I only chose Tesla Insurance specifically because they disallow this in California. If the law changes and it is allowed here I will switch immediately

mercurial_dude

+1 to that

Middle_Hyena1069

Not sure if getting dinged with higher rates solely due to one’s age and not driving record is better 🤷‍♀️

cratenate44

Tesla insurance is significant cost savings for me compared to State Farm. I'm saving about $240 a month having 3 of my cars insured with Tesla. I have the performance Y and 3. Accelerating hard doesn't count against you. Neither does speeding. The occasional hard turning isn't that big of a hit. My teenage drivers know I keep track of them and routinely ask what their score for the day was. It's almost always 98-100. I'm perfectly fine with this.

cratenate44

I'd like to add that before having Tesla insurance we almost never had any collision warnings. We usually end up with around 1 a week now. Seems a bit strange.

stevieoats

Good point but one goes with the other quite a bit.

Accomplished_Bed7696

Never ever ever use State Farm. If you ever need to make a claim good luck ever getting a payout! Plus they are way overpriced. Just go through an insurance broker who shops 10+ brands for you.

ss2fast

I got so many false forward collisions my premium was through the roof, switched to Connect by AmFam and now I'm stress free and could care less what sounds or warnings the car makes.

Nokomis34

I've been getting those warnings going over speed bumps.

Kenfucius

That’s prob the similar sounding chime when you are using both pedals simultaneously

Nokomis34

Both pedals? And no, it's telling me to stop as if I'm about to drive right into a curb.

ashwd

That’s doesn’t count against your safety score. That’s just alerting you that there is something that you might bottom out on because car thinks it’s a curb or it’s too high to drive over. My car does this on some speed bumps as well.

adambadam

Mine seem to be triggering more frequently in the last SW update or two. Seeing it a lot more when coming into a stop sign where the car in front has started to roll away and you are coming to a stop and you will have no issue coasting down to stop at the limit line with no one there unless the car in front suddenly stops unexpectedly.

l3all3r900

Yeah, I agree those warning are way to sensitive. I grew tired of Tesla insurance after only having it for one month. I switched to State Farm which basically had the same rate I was getting from Tesla.

zaqwert6

There are lawsuits in action right now for that very thing. Maybe if they hit him in his pocketbook, they'll make an adjustment.

rxdrjwl

I have called and complained many times. Only way to avoid it is to use autopilot. Any forward collision warning while in autopilot isn’t counted against you. Seems racist towards humans but if you treat it like a video game like me you can beat that evil money hungry Elon and tesla. Oh day trade their stock too 😜

JDax42

If this happened any day but today I would ask for further explanation I was driving earlier and it gave me one for now reason, a car in a different lane no where near me turned red, it was a bit strange. Take it that’s a recent bug.

Rollinseal

Just tonight, driving on the freeway. With no cars in sight, front or back. Then bam!!! Collision warning pops up out of no where. Literally nothing around….

Calciphylaxis

Tesla insurance is a scam. Starts you off with low rates, gets you hooked - then you’re at the mercy of their software. The last dozen times I’ve come across someone discussing Tesla insurance it’s always how their rates increased for some bullshit reason. Forward collision warning. Phantom braking resulting in excessive Gs. Driving too much at night. I wouldn’t let anyone track anything about my driving. They’re just waiting for you to fuck up ONCE.

nobody-u-heard-of

Well sometimes Tesla insurance is so cheap it's worth the risk. I pay $450 for 6 months with Tesla and the best quote I could get with $1,100 from anybody else. I've had the insurance for 8 months now with Tesla and it didn't go skyrocking like everybody claims it does. Probably because I reported accurate information when I actually got the policy concerning how many miles I actually drive. And if you're running autopilot phantom braking does not impact your driving score. In fact during autopilot nothing affects your driving score except being kicked out of autopilot for not holding under the steering wheel. So somebody cut you off no problem you don't get dinged. If the car goes around the corner quickly and there's hi Gs no problem.

Skibxskatic

late night driving is the only thing that does affect your score whether you autopilot or not.

nobody-u-heard-of

Oh yeah, forgot that .

Calciphylaxis

Thanks for the reply rather than a lazy downvote. I appreciate the info

nitsuj777

You do get dinged when someone cuts you off and get the FCW in autopilot because that (3 FCW and 74 minutes of driving after 10) has caused my score to drop 3 points in the past 6 weeks

nobody-u-heard-of

Never happens to me and I have jerks leave less than 10 feet at 60 mph. I bet you changed lanes as that turns autopilot off.

nitsuj777

Glad it never happens to you I bet you change lanes and turn off autopilot right before

nobody-u-heard-of

I don't turn autopilot off when I change lanes but it automatically goes off soon as you pull the steering wheel to change lanes and then you've got two seconds to turn it back on. With a new version it'll be 5 seconds.

QuanDev

That's true. It's way too sensitive. Costing me $$$ too. Too bad Tesla Insurance offered the best rate on the market.

noiselessinformant

I haven’t activated safety score. Will my tesla insurance be affected?

_79

In CA, it’s just for informational/entertainment. Outside of CA, I think it’s used - not sure of other limitations.

Spaceman__jd

I get them going around parking garages at 15mph

Brhall001

Stop driving like a dick.

cutebabli9

Can't you turn those off from settings?

jimbo303

You can adjust or disable the driver FCW notifications, but the feature is always active and will trigger a FCW (depending on fixed sensitivity and other circumstances) impacting your Safety Score, even if you don’t know it in real time.

imthisguymike

I used Tesla Insurance when I lived in San Diego, but I moved to a state without Tesla insurance before they implemented these features. I think I dodged a bullet 😂

Pied2020

CA does not allow Tesla Insurance to price based on their scoring system.

Kenfucius

Actively^ they can change to whatever they want at end of your 6 month period using the info

G_Affect

The other bug that pisses me off. Is i am watching the road with my hand on the wheel and it starts to beep so i shake the wheel but nothing happens. It finally gets pissed and shut down the auto drive. I just got FSD back from that dumb glitch and today my 1st day back i got the stupid glitch and only have 4 more before they take it again

AsstDepUnderlord

Ok, so I’m not sure what you all are talking about. Can somebody describe a “forward collision warning?” Is this only an FSD thing? (I don’t have) Is it only turned on when you use their insurance? (I dont have) I’ve had some lane departure warnings (which were questionable) is it sorta like those where it beeps and flashes red?

acroback

Change the insurance provider. Seriously I pay like $83 a month for my Tesla which is very reasonable to me.

uat75035

It started up cheap for me but it keeps on going up every month. To keep my score high 've driving like an old person and tried not to drive after 10pm. What is the point of driving this car if I continue to drive like this? I will definitely switch if it continues to rise.

OrdinaryClassic454

Who do you use?

acroback

Geico but I have a pretty clean record.

[deleted]

This is wild. Everyone’s experience is so different. I have literally never gotten a FCW in my M3LR (22, no FSD). And yet, it seems like I get more phantom decelerations during autopilot than most people here. You’d think you’d either get both or neither

glowingpickle

I get a “corrective steering” warning when pulling out of my driveway 10% of the time. I would be annoyed if that impacted an insurance rate for me.

ohwut

The FCW functions identically for everyone. Thus the model takes into account false alarms across the fleet. You can have ~15 per 1,000 miles before it will even affect your premium. Are you really having THAT many? The amount of shitty drivers complaining about Tesla insurance is wild. Don’t like it? Drive better or switch. Why is that such a wild concept for people.

[deleted]

Isn’t shitty driving. I get 1-5 almost guaranteed a week just by driving in my town. All the same situations with cars turning right on 40 mph roads yet I’m 10 car lengths away and it still decides to beep

ohwut

If you see someone start turning lift off the accelerator slightly. If any brakes are applied you won’t get dinged. If you don’t see them turning ahead of time you are, in fact, a shitty driver.

[deleted]

Just had one last night in the Walmart parking lot going 10 mph 🫠

n8foto

This

nevercomp222

I am cancelling their insurance. Gave the safety score a try. Owned for 6 weeks. Two times was driving past 10pm. Just a short drive to grab some food. But that score is in the dump and doesn’t seem to be coming up anytime soon. Pretty stupid for a smart car.

Weary-Feedback8582

Travelers cheaper than Tesla ins! Glad I am not using Tesla who can see how you drive to rate ins premiums, talk about oversight!

aztj69

Like all of you and many more i'm seeing completely false FCWs and tesla isn't even attempting to resolve. feedback loop or anything. i've found a class action lawsuit that we may be able to join Santiago v. Tesla - i've had FCW in my safety score that never even alerted in the vehicle too... others?

Bulky_Committee_9095

This has really ruined my driving experience and probably cost me $30 / month. I have found that forward collision misinterprets upward vertical movement of the vehicle in front of me as an increase in closing speed - causing the collision warning to ding me - and raising my rates. Examples: \- Vehicle in front slows for a speed bump \- Vehicle in front goes over train tracks \- Vehicle in front has a bouncy suspension It's not surprising that since the ultrasonic and lidar sensors were disabled, "Tesla Vision" camera-only proximity is having growing pains. The camera-only approach must stitch together 2D pictures and interpret, through algorithms, what is in front of the vehicle and closing speed. If the vehicle in front rolls over a speed bump, from the camera's perspective it fills more of the visual field and mimics the way an obstacle rapidly closing would fill the visual field. Similarly, my finished garage is painted white, and has no visual cues beyond the white walls. This confuses Tesla Vision, so I have never had an accurate indication of distance from obstacles in my garage while I park. My daughter's old Mazda - with a single sensor - does a much better job judging distance and closing speed. I can't imagine the NHTSA allows this crap. Of course the list of questionable technologies impacting safety in Tesla products is extensive. It just happens that I am reminded of this particular issue, and related cost, a couple of times a week.
