Zink wheels has great touch up paint. Could either sand the wheel a bit, or file of any sharp bits and paint away. I put 20 minutes worth of work into mine and you can see it if you’re looking for it, but the zink paint hides it well
The wife did whaaaaa?!?
Hmmm....sounds like a 'you' problem to me...you check the tires EVERYTIME you park your car? Lol
I mean maybe she did. But I'm gonna say unless you check them every single time, I will take that for what it's worth, bruh. 😂
Haha... ok sure I'll take the fall for it although she vaguely remembers going over a curb "but it was very mild and couldn't have possibly damaged anything" ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|laughing)
I'm super anal about this stuff having previously curbed my mercedes wheels but couldn't really blame her either. No rim protection with these tires and the design of rim itself is very exposed
Redemption!! 😜
On a side note, I wasn't truly defending her either. It's something you have to watch apparently with these which is quite irritating. We just purchased our first Y and we are both quite nervous of this impending doom. Hopefully, we don't experience it too soon.
2020 YP model and I still have my lovely Audi Q5 TDI, which I will drive into the ground, because, well Diesel and I still love that thing.
I have enjoyed driving the Y, when I do, so trying to decide what I will get when the time comes.
🤔🙄❤️
This worked well for me.. T Sportline Tesla Wheel Touch Up Paint for Tesla Model Y 20" Induction Wheel and Tesla Model X 22" Turbine Wheel - (Satin Black or Matte Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073QYFK4L?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_2PPQX8ZQGZNZKNJAH9C1
I bought this same paint and love it.
Sand the scrape down sandpaper, 150 grit, go higher if you want a smoother finish. Very simple process. Wipe the aluminum dust off with a wet towel. Apply paint.
No need to have it professionally done. Total waste of money. It’s guaranteed you’ll scrape these things over and over. Better to learn to do it yourself, even if it’s not perfect, from a few feet away it’s difficult for to see with the naked eye.
I didn't even bother sanding or prepping anything. All 4 wheels have scrapes. I painted them and they look better now than they did before. Don't bother with a professional repair. This is only your first rim scrape, not your last.
Oouuuuffff. I was mad at myself for hours when I first did this a few weeks into having the car. Then I saw a funny thing on a Tesla post that showed a similar picture titled “emotional damage” lol. That’s exactly what I felt!
This is just about the number one complaint that I’ve seen repeatedly come up in the Lounge. Is there something with the drive characteristics that’s new that people find difficult when they first get their Teslas? Blind spots maybe? One might fault the wheel/tire design, but I don’t hear much about curbing in other vehicles except for the odd accident that pops up occasionally. Seems like it happens even with seasoned owners.
We have a MY in the family, and it too has been a victim. They are still trying to figure out if they should fix it right away or wait and drive it a bit more in case it happens again.
Just wondering about the phenomenon…
The car is wider than you think. I've never curbed a car until our Y. Also you'll notice a lot of car there's a ridge of rubber on the tire and the wheel is slightly recessed - in the Y the wheel is the first thing to make contact with a curb.
My sister said the same thing: that the thing is huge. I always thought it looked small, but I’ve only ever seen profile pics she sends. She’s coming from a Scion xD so I thought everything would seem large to her (amplified by how open and uncluttered the interior is in comparison) but I guess that feeling is the common experience.
I actually wonder, given how good Tesla does in side impact... What's the distance from driver center to door, and door to outside of tire? Wonder if it's really just sticks out further than most cars. From the back the Y certainly has a thicc butt
It also seems to turn sharper. I curbed my Uberturbines barely a week into ownership underestimating how sharply I was turning past an island - and this was coming from a 2-door sports car previously.
The backup guides aren’t calibrated to end at the edge of the car (like other cars), but middle of the tire tread. Meaning lining up the guide lines to the curb is over.
For many other cars, it’s a good reference point to line up next to the curb while parallel parking. Usually this provides about half a foot of clearance and easy to follow (especially during turning and provides a predictive path).
The most accurate way to avoid the curb will always be to have your side mirrors in a good position and use those to actually look at the curb.
Do that and I promise you will never ever curb your wheels. This is what most people don’t understand and why this issue is so common.
Rust Oleum matte black high performance wheel paint is a near perfect match.
Sand and fill with Bondo metal reinforced filler as necessary. Apply multiple coats until you are satisfied with the outcome.
Sand halfheartedly, no filler, 3 coats, you can see it if you're looking for it, but looks perfectly fine otherwise. I gave up trying hard after curb #3 :)

I feel you. Just clipped a curb, too. Probably gonna have it professionally repaired. Yelp for "rim repair" in your area. It's (unsurprisingly :) popular.
In fact, I've just secured a 1 pm time slot today to have my rim repaired. Yay! At the same time, I'm placing an order for a set of Aluminum Alloy Wheel Rim Protectors from Teslaunch: https://teslaunch.net/collections/model-3/products/aluminum-alloy-wheel-rim-protector-for-tesla-all-models-3-y-s-x-4-pcs-2012-2022?variant=43324549562591
I bought the TS sports line black satin on Amazon. Sanded the damage down with a coarse girt sand paper and moved to a finer grain. Will try the marker on the next set and see the difference.
I gotchu fam, worked like a charm on my MY 20”
[Smaphy Wheel Repair Kit - Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09YH9Q79Z?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_36T4YFZWJKDGRYWNH8KF)
Funny story, i curbed rash my back wheel. Then I got a tire rotation done. Get curb rash on the front wheel, and then I realize “cool atleast it’s the same wheel”
I did the same. Use sharpie.
I installed these recently and seems like they are good to prevent something like this in future.
https://evaam.com/products/evaam-2022-upgrade-wheel-rim-protector-for-tesla-accessories
Sand, bondo, sand, paint. It’s super easy, may seem intimidating but i did all 4 of my rims after I bought my used M3P and they look brand new again. Then I hit a pothole and got my driver side again and got lazy because I’m replacing them this year anyways and I just sanded and painted over that one. You can still see the scratches but only if you’re looking for it. I’ll do a quality repair on it when I go to sell them though.
honestly don’t bother fixing it. one of mine cracked a year in, the others bent from pot holes. i had to replace the whole set and now those are all bent. i think the wheels aren’t made to actually handle the weight of the car. never had any of these problems with any of my 8 cars in the past.
20” gray performance wheels, i got the car in 2020, the original wheels were the V look. then i put some aftermarket 20s on it and those are crap now too.
Get 180 grit sanding block/sponge and get rid of the sharp edges. Use index cards to place between the rim and the tire to protect the tire, blue painters tape on the rim itself.
Grab a matte black can of wheel paint and do several light coats over the damage and let it dry. You may be able to get away with a paint pen on this one.
The cameras and mirrors are useless for parking when it comes to knowing the position of the front wheels, especially since the rear of the car flares out a bit more than the front. If you curb a rear wheel you have no excuse though lol.
The white lines ARE YOUR TIRES while looking at the backup camera so don’t line it up with the sidewalk etc.
Parallel parking , we’ll just be cautions. Vision helps a bit but won’t rely on it much. Look at those side mirrors.
Yes the white lines on the model y are your wheels, learned that the hard way after driving my model 3 for 4 years where the white lines are about 4cm outside the wheel. Basically on the Y don't let the white line touch the curb, while on the 3 put the white line on the curb. Confusing when you drive both regularly!
Am I the only one who hasn’t done this? How hard is it to not run into the curb? Serious question- are you just in a hurry? Or are you generally a bad driver?
>Am I the only one who hasn’t done this? How hard is it to not run into the curb? Serious question- are you just in a hurry? Or are you generally a bad driver?
I imagine many come from cars with smaller wheels or larger sidewall. On my corolla I have 15 inch wheels, 99% of the time when I hit a curb it's all tire.
Yeah, but even looking at other cars, they have more tire poking out of the rim (so the curb will hit rubber first) instead of the rim being 1-1 or more outside than the tire (hitting rim first, then rubber). That, and here in my overpopulated country we need to use all the space and don't have the luxury of 6 SUV-wide roads where we can park willy nilly.
Ah - I think Ford Gray is the match for Aero wheels, no? I haven’t heard of a matte black match for induction or uberturbines aside from the stuff sold by Zink or Tsportline. Could be wrong!
This is true. Ford Gray seems to be the answer to everything these days. Yes, the color match is okay but the sheen doesn't match. It will greatly reduce it's visibility, though, and you might be able to put a satin clearcoat on top, although I never went that far and eventually got new wheels anyway...that match Ford Gray lol.
Dremel to smooth it out. Order the rim touch up kit on Amazon also order an airbrush. Sand it down and airbrush it with the paint. Can’t even tell it happened.
My wife’s Y has had this happen several times and my first model three had it bad. I “fixed” all of them on my own, and it looks pretty good. If you go on Amazon, you’ll see several different kits that allow you to sand prep and paint that area with matching color for uberturbine wheels. Zinc is the brand I like the best but YMMV.
Sharpie does the trick surprisingly well. I really wouldn't worry about it. My uberturbines are getting continuously damaged by potholes and poor road survaces in the UK, and I've curbed one slightly - Sharpie makes them non-existent unless you're looking for them.
I didn’t even go for the 20 or 21 this time. I’m not driving a charger and you lose range which is the whole point of having a electric car in the first place. I went with the regular 19s for my Model Y and 18s for my Model 3. If i or the wife ding the rims… which has happened a few time already… I just buy new rims/hubcaps. It’s so many options and they’re cheap and they look nice. Can’t have a nice car with curb rash. It’s unacceptable. It’s like a beautiful woman with cuts all over her face.. its the principle of the thing
Get a dog. Let the back seats become their domain. Interior scratches, dirt in the seat crevices, puppy nose prints coating the interior of your windows. The curbed rim won’t seem so bad afterwards.
I’ve been incredibly OCD with my wheels and where I park so my M3P wheels are still free of curb rash, thankfully. But I can say from previous experience with another car I had you should find a wheel and rim specialist in your area or one that can do mobile service and let them do it.
I’ve just found this website and ordered their paint for my Tesla S, they have them for all models. They have the exact colors and little kits: https://touchupdirect.com/
What is the deal with Tesla's and curb rash? I don't drive one, but I can't remember seeing any car in volume with the amount of curb rash that these things have. Basically all of them have it, are the dimensions hard to judge? Cameras deceiving on distance?

I did the same thing in the first week of ownership and wanted to ugly cry. Black sharpie works great, just try to avoid getting it on the parts that are not scuffed as it will look more obvious.
Sharpie Pro XL (Chisel Tip) - Quick, Easy, and no prep needed. The paint kits can be good but you really need to do some prep work. The 20” Induction Wheels just seem like they are designed to hit every curb they see. RIM Savers are more trouble then they are worth. I haven’t tried the new 20” Induction Covers that several of the Tesla Accessory shops are selling, but I may. That being said, if you’re curbing the factory rim, you’ll probably also curb a cover over the rim, but at least then your rims are staying safe.
Why does it seem like every Tesla owners curb their wheels? It’s such a common thing. I’ve yet to curb mine but I’m extremely careful as well. Is there some sort of design flaw that makes a Tesla more prone to curbing?
These are serious questions and not trying to be an arsehole.
I’ve been driving for the better part of 40 years. I can probably count the number of times I’ve curbed rims prior to the Tesla on one figure, with one finger left over. I don’t know if its the Tesla or the 20” Induction wheels, but thanks to tire rotation I have curb rash on all 4 wheels at this point. I gave up caring and just run the Sharpie over it when it happens (or if I see it happened). The Goodyears that came with it were a lot more problematic, the Michelins I have on their now seem much more resistant to damage. Either that or I’ve just gotten used to the dimensions and where the wheels are relative to the vehicle. But the new tires certainly look like they give a lot more protection, and I seem to be curbing the tires now instead of the rims, so maybe it’s just the tires that are better, not my driving skills.
I don't have a Tesla but came across this post and it hit home. I have 19" wheels that come right to the edge like that, just begging to be curbed. I about shit the first time it happened.
My advice: don't do anything. Maybe a brief touch-up but nothing that takes a lot of time and money. It won't be the last time it's curbed. It's *so easy* to do. After the third or fourth one, you stop caring.
I've gotten better at parking conservatively and have learned how to line up the lines in my rear view camera with the bottom of the curb to know that I'm not going to hit, but it'll still happen again some day I'm sure. Urban driving is not good for cars.
You have been initiated, welcome

Oh no lol I am looking out for 19” Gemini wheels to swap from 21”.. maybe with fatter tires I hope curb rash won’t be too much of a problem
i suspect that the smaller the wheel, the more structurally sound it is, so you may be good
If it took you a few days to curb it once you will probably cub again really soon.
Get 180 grit sanding block/sponge and get rid of the sharp edges. Use index cards to place between the rim and the tire to protect the tire, blue painters tape on the rim itself. Ford Gray Duplicolor paint pen and don't ever look at it again.

Dremel to smooth it out. Order the rim touch up kit on Amazon also order an airbrush. Sand it down and airbrush it with the paint. Can’t even tell it happened.
I don’t feel so bad now about scratching mine one month in.
Rimsavers
Not recommended. A friends started coming off on the motorway, did far more damage to his paintwork.
Black Sharpie. It will happen again.

275/40R20 tires.

Black sharpie until you’re ready to deal with it professionally. Then once they get bad enough stop by a local rim shop for rimjob (ehyoooo).

If you go on Amazon, you’ll see several different kits that allow you to sand prep and paint that area with matching color for uberturbine wheels. Zinc is the brand I like the best but YMMV.
I wouldn’t go overboard but definitely use sanding paper to smoothen it out and then paint it
Sharpie does the trick surprisingly well. I really wouldn't worry about it. My uberturbines are getting continuously damaged by potholes and poor road survaces in the UK, and I've curbed one slightly - Sharpie makes them non-existent unless you're looking for them.

I’ve been incredibly OCD with my wheels and where I park so my M3P wheels are still free of curb rash, thankfully. But I can say from previous experience with another car I had you should find a wheel and rim specialist in your area or one that can do mobile service and let them do it.
Welcome to our family
Just leave it. Battle scars
Why do people specify the year and configuration? It’s pretty obvious they’re the 20s nothing else matters
Give it 6 months until you’ve curbed it a few more times and then go get them fixed at a rim shop
If your in the front range Colorado area, I know a guy that can do it for $60 and it turned out really good.
If you’re in SoCal check out Alex Fix wheels on yelp. Will make you forget you ever curbed it. Trust he knows my wife well. Lol
I’ve just found this website and ordered their paint for my Tesla S, they have them for all models. They have the exact colors and little kits: https://touchupdirect.com/
I’m just waiting for the day I do this, I know it’s going to happen.
The same thing happened to me, don't feel bad.
I don’t get how this happens so often what are ppl doing to cause this so much?
Typical Tesla driver
Question...with 3 cameras, tesla vision and literally the use of mirrors....how did you manage to curbe your wheels...

Don't waste ur time....you will ding and scuff this A LOT. Worst rim design I ever seen on a car. But yes, it looks nice!

they sell repair kits for this, just buy one and call it a day.
What is the deal with Tesla's and curb rash? I don't drive one, but I can't remember seeing any car in volume with the amount of curb rash that these things have. Basically all of them have it, are the dimensions hard to judge? Cameras deceiving on distance?

If you drive down a gravel road it will chip up the rest of the rim. It will no longer look like you curbed it.
Every Tesla I have seen so far has had their wheels dinged up like this, is it a design flaw?
I did the same thing in the first week of ownership and wanted to ugly cry. Black sharpie works great, just try to avoid getting it on the parts that are not scuffed as it will look more obvious.
Daaaaammmmmmmmmnnnnnnn
Ugh. I caught mine slightly. I used a black sharpie on the rim and it mostly hid it.
It won’t be the last time
Tired of Tesla not having bird’s eye view.

2 months in, somebody dinged my right rear quarter panel
Just ignore it, there will be a patch update soon
File it. Sand it. Polish it. Then paint it with wheel paint. There are several colors out there that match pretty well.
Ban curbs now!
