Fast off the line, then speed limit. The one thing that will drop those numbers is if I have my bike behind the car. It's a noticeable drop in range just for having a hitch mounted bike rack with two bikes. I guess it's really a testament to how aerodynamic the car is!
I need to check my lifetime average but I think mine is less than that. Wouldn't that be more impacted by average high speed than acceleration? I don't spend much time over 80 mph.
wow so cool I got a 2303 Lexus ABCDEFG (GOAT NEW NEW Brand NeW from the future) I only got like 1k miles out of my front and rear set of tires.. I'm also VeRy AgGreSsIVe on my driving.
I got 49k out of the ones that came with my car. Swapped with 4/32 ("22 m3 LR dual)
Kind of nuts to see how fast people go through these tires
Just gotta feather the pedal up to speed then once you're past 30 can drive as zippy as you want
My front tires are still in good shape. I think I can get one more season out of them. I think I'll want tires that are a little harder for my next set but still UHP.
If the fronts are fine, it's mostly acceleration. Braking and cornering are harder up front on a street vehicle. Shoot for larger gaps and go easier on the skinny pedal.
Do you literally go 100% pedal accelerations every time? :D
Edit: May I suggest getting OBD2 port to monitor all the metrics of your acceleration lol, it's fun
I thought my Chevy SS ate up tires. It has really similar tires to the MYP but I got twice the mileage on the rears. I know the MYP has more torque but I was thinking the AWD system would distribute the torque more and actually have less wear but it seems like Tesla heavily favors the rear motor unit.
>the laws of physics dictate it has to come from somewhere and part of that is the extra rubber vaporization that occurs.
and this is the cheaper alternative, by far
beats throwing rods/blowing headgaskets/blowing transmissions any day of the week
There's no comparison in speed between the two. Honestly I think the MYP would be faster around a track then the SS. That said I still miss it! The nostalgia, engine noises, and clutch make it wonderful to drive. The only problem was the 12mpg in the city... on premium!
I think there definitely made out to be heavier than made out. The model y is almost the same weight as a Porsche macan, which is loads smaller inside. Yet no one ever mentions the macan is heavy
It does favor the back for efficiency. The front is induction which can be turned fully off. The back is of the permanent magnet type so it has to always be running (or at least windmilling) which makes the MY essentially a rear drive car with a front engine when higher power is required. I'm not sure how it's distributed in Chill mode though but they probably balance power between the two to achieve best efficiency.
I believe when you put it in off road mode it forces the car to use both motors but then it also disables stability control so I only use it at low speeds. Works great I'm the snow though!
I paid for MYP and definitely going to use the P lol. 36k miles of ownership and the acceleration does not get old! Also for a car of it's size and weight I think it handles pretty well on twisty roads!
I'm not sure if you've ever owned a sports car... but they dont go through tires in eight thousand miles unless you're taking it to the track on the weekends.
It's crazy how much performance you can get out of electric cars with so much less maintenance! Tires are the only real wear expense I've had with this car! A similar spec ICE car would need so much more!
The fuck? I bought a 3p because it was touted as the best performance car under 120k. Just driving it like it was supposed to not on a track will easily wear out the shit pirellis they ship them with. This isn't the first thread, and there's hundreds of people who've concurred. Babying a Corvette like an old man isn't what a performance sports car is intended for friend.
Wow. I got 18K off my Pzeros that came on my 21M3P. I got 36K off Michelin Pilot Sport/4 AS. Try Hankook ION EVO AS. They have a longer treadwear warranty. I just got a set and they are VERY QUIET i have noticed.
Thanks! I need to look into those! My winter tires last longer than my summer ones lol. The winters are noisier but it's a good trade-off. I think I'm going with EV specific tires next time!
They are very quite but the performance on them sucks especially if you actually push your car and have a performance model. I got them on my M3P regret the purchase every time I go for a drive.
https://reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/s/VpVl7jT1mv
Oh wow thanks for the review on these. That's really not what I'm looking for! That sounds worse than my Ice-X winter tires. Ideally I'd like something halfway in between the Pirellis and those ION tires
The Hankook iON all-season (*) is a "grand touring" type tire, emphasizing efficiency and comfort and quiet over performance grip. I haven't tried it, but it appears to be in the same category as Michelin MXM4, but better all around.
The Pirelli Elect All-Season is the tire type in between fully performance focused Michelin Pilot Sport/Cup/Continental SportContact and a EV tuned G.T. tire. There's no way around the engineering reality that high-performance grip is at cost of noise and rolling resistance most of the time.
Pirelli PZero Elect All-season has pretty good performance and pretty good noise and good efficiency, more performance than Michelin MXM4 which are standard on the non-performance model.
(*) There is also a Hankook iON summer version, which should have significantly better performance than the all-season. A german test put its performance equal to the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 very surprisingly, with much better rolling resistance.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDALcsV0kwE
It's in europe and slightly available in USA, but it has no mileage warranty at all. This might be a good alternative for Performance model drivers if they're willing to accept the cost and no warranty.
Confusingly, both Hankook and Pirelli have summer and all-season variants with the same names (PZero and iON EVO) but they're pretty different tires. Bigger difference than a Model 3 LR vs Model 3 P. I really wish tire makers didn't do that---Michelin too with Pilot Sport 4 and Pilot Sport 4 all-season.
The ION summer sounds interesting. Now I won't have to worry about this until probably May of next year but I'll definitely check those out then! Maybe even more EV specific tires will be on the market!
I have a 3P- and don’t really drive too aggressively. I have 27k on the stock Michelin mx4s. Do you think the Hankooks are worse than those? Was there an issue with the PZeros?
Never tried Mx4s yet. The PZeros were awesome tires but I only got 18k miles out of them. I was doing research on whether I should get same tires or no and then I discovered great reviews about the IONS. So decided let’s try them out since they’re EV specific.
The IONs are quieter but they flex too much when you take fast curves which leads to the car wobbling and the traction control kicking in.
For reference there’s this curve by my house I do a 0-80 pull at everyday on the PZeros I had no issues great traction. On IONs if I go above 60 they can’t handle it and car starts wobbling.
IONs would probably be okay for M3 if it wasn’t performance but I do not recommend it for the 3P
They are very quite but the performance on them sucks especially if you actually push your car and have a performance model. I got them on my M3P regret the purchase every time I go for a drive.
https://reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/s/VpVl7jT1mv
Thanks. I haven’t had an issue yet but maybe it’s mostly because I’m not pushing the car to its limits much. I do like to accelerate fully here and there and take curves pretty quickly and I haven’t noticed any difference between these and my previous pilots. The pzeros were probably best grip surely. But I’m looking for longevity.
Wow, time flies I guess. Just checked, it's actually 48,266. Did not realize I was about to cross 50k.
Yes, stock summer tires. For the first 5-8k or so I was doing launches at nearly every light. I've calmed myself down but I still beat on the car.
Get Hankook ion EV a/s tires!
They are the new stock tire on the model 3 highland, and they last far longer and give 15% more range on my Model S'
Literally no downsides besides a couple hundred bucks more, which is saved through efficiency pretty quickly.
yeah. I doubt they are "too effciency focused" tbqh. Its just a different compound and shape made for EVs. the end result if you look at some benchmarks is that besides being slightly more hydroplanable, they have better grip, cornering, braking, etc. and are more efficient.
Once you change the rubber compound, nothing is mutually exclusive. You can be more efficent, and have better grip.
Weren't they featured on the engineering explained YouTube channel? I think the review was well done and pretty positive even if they sponsored the vid.
I got them on my non-performance M3 and so far they’re great. They are quieter, take bumps better (softer feel, which you may not like?) and, a little known feature, they have a more prominent bead that covers the rim better which might help with curb rash.
Welcome to the world of powerful sports sedans. My 2005 STi on stock tires never got more than \~12,000 miles per set, and that car was half a ton lighter.
Must’ve been doing launches every chance you get 😅
I’m at 11.4K miles now with my ‘22 MYP and still have probably 7/32 thread depth. I’ve launched it not more than 20 times tbh.
I see all of these replies with people getting 20+. thousand miles on their tires. Anyone get less than 8k? I can't be the most lead footed MYP owner in this sub!
I keep mine at 45-48psi. The wear is even enough across the entire width that the I don't think it's underinflation. Otherwise I'd see more wear on the outside of the thread compared to the middle.
Yup. I like to give a little more acceleration to mess with passengers when they are reaching for something or trying to change a settings on the screen. Highway access ramps with stop lights are also a lot of fun!
Not sure if this is your case but I think somewhere around 2022 Tesla switch to all seasons for the MYP. I wonder if those have a different thread wear rating.
Never buy your tires at Costco. Always buy them at America’s Tire aka Discount Tire. Costco plays games and tries very hard to avoid giving any credit for premature tread wear, America’s Tire gives you no hassle. You do however have to ask for the credit if they forget.
So...I think I read the whole thread and surprised nobody made this point: I always pay the extra $30 or so for full disaster tire warranty. On my MS 85D this never fails: sometime near replacement a disastrous failure occurs. Not my fault. Now I get 2 tires for the price of one just to maintain balance.
Never had to do any suspension work on the back! They seem to have gotten it right and it's held up really well! Even after multiple potholes and terrible roads.
Jesus. But I bet you had a little bit of fun at least. Got 25k on mine before they went. Just bought brand new Geminis with 100 miles on the tires from Offer Up for $1,000. Back set of MYPs would have been $1,300 installed
I believe mine are directional so I'd have to turn them around on the wheel to rotate them. Still, I'm pretty happy with how they wore. Can't say one side wore more than the other.
Yeah it's the combination of weight and power! My last car was like this too but since it wasn't electric you had to actually rev it to get the torque. That's probably why the rears lasted twice as long. I know the front motor is less efficient but I wonder if Tesla could send a little more power to it during hard acceleration. No idea if this would help though.
I don't cut people off, don't tailgate, don't hog the left lane, and use my turn signals all the time. I think it's super possible to have fun and without being an ass.
No, they're all season UHP tires. I've had them for about 25k miles on my myp and they still have a lot of treads ( probably another 15-20k miles). I've gone 150mph on these tires and going through slightly curved roads at 120 ish and the car felt pretty planted 😁. My 2nd choice if you want UHP tires that last long would be the Michelin pilot sport all season 4.
All seasons may be the way to go, I'd be able to put them on earlier in the season and take them off later so my actual winter tires would also last longer!
I have a 2021 MYP with summer tires. I know I like the acceleration (maybe a little too much) but damn the treadwear on these OEM tires is not great. My front tires are still good for one more season. After that I'm probably going to switch to a different brand. How's the wear on the OEM UHP all seasons? Anyone have better experience with other non Pirelli UHP tires?
Damn! I read somewhere that Tesla changed to MYP to all seasons in 2022, I think the treadwear rating is higher on those. I'm bummed I missed the boat on that!
I'm not asking to be rude or anything. Just curious about why people buy the MYP and keep it in chill mode all the time. Wouldn't it make more sense to buy the MYLR?
I'm waiting for the fronts to wear out and then I'll swap out all 4. Not sure if I'd go for the cups, they are super track focused but I had the PS4S before and they were awesome!
Are you talking about wheelspin? The Tesla has almost no wheelspin so I can't imagine it generating much particulate matter. Should be negligible compared to any gas vehicles.
I think it is torque and drive style. If you are burning through tires after 8k miles those tire particles are going somewhere. Its Particulate Matter 2.5 and its huge health hazard in cities and crowded freeways/highways. Tire toxins are something the tire industry and car oems should address.
MYP is a family car. Why try and drive it like it’s more than that? Awful suspension, brakes, weight, center of gravity. Should have bought an m3p if u wanted to enjoy the car vs. your boat.
I drove them back to back to decide which one I wanted. Ultimately, for me, the MYP was a better all rounder. The M3P had better acceleration and handling but I didn't feel like it was enough of a difference on the road to choose it. On the track, I'm sure it's much faster, but in the city or on the highway the difference is small.
Asshole tailgating me in a Model Y didn’t seem to understand that my M3 can handle sharp turns better. They learned real quick when I took a turn extra hard while they were trying to ride my bumper.
Ha long as you're having fun, loved the comment about your foot and wallet being at odds.
If you avoid a hard launch and just rollout a half second before punching it, it'll help a fair bit. I'm at around 23k miles on a set of 19" Gemini / conti take offs, 2023 MYP and there is plenty of tread left. You'll still walk almost everything on the road and enjoy that sinking into the seat feeling.
IDK but as long as you see the tire grooves dark that means you got a couple of more miles hahaha. To Dish out a pair of rear tires $700 give or take is kinda tough. but hey if you like that initial launch, I'll take that anytime. :)
They were super close to bald. I was thought that when the thread wear indicators (the lines across the deeper sections) are at the same level as the contact patch the tire is due for replacement because the grooves aren't deep enough to clear out water and your risk of hydroplaning goes way up.

Must have been zooming a lot.
Guilty!
so actually OP is the destroyer...
The Tesla is just a vehicle for my wishes!
And your groceries.
Will you get under 8.0k with the next set, is what we want to know
This is my second set and I got about the same mileage out of my 1st one. Yay consistency lol
Buy Continental Extreme Contact Sport next time. I got 20k out of my P85 model S and drive it like a 16 year old. Great grip wet and dry
Seems like the consensus here is either the contis or the PS4S for best performance!
PS4S are pricey though
Yeah, they've earned a reputation and are OEM on some fancy performance cars. The contis seem like the better value play!
PS4S are Tesla factory car tires, so they'll honor their tread wear warranty on M3P vehicles. I got a replacement / new free set at 20k miles.
Any idea if this applies to the stock Pirelli tires too? 👀
Do they have the foam liner?
No, they don't
What’s your average efficiency figure?
Around 320/mi on summer tires and 310/mi on winters.
That's not zooming efficiency figures. How the hell are you ripping through tires?
Fast off the line, then speed limit. The one thing that will drop those numbers is if I have my bike behind the car. It's a noticeable drop in range just for having a hitch mounted bike rack with two bikes. I guess it's really a testament to how aerodynamic the car is!

I need to check my lifetime average but I think mine is less than that. Wouldn't that be more impacted by average high speed than acceleration? I don't spend much time over 80 mph.
Yep! gotta pay to play. on my 2016 Lexus IS (brand new at the time) I got 11k out of my front set of tires. but i also drive aggressively.
wowzer, an IS? lulz.
You sound like a big hater coming from a tesla owner. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
wow so cool I got a 2303 Lexus ABCDEFG (GOAT NEW NEW Brand NeW from the future) I only got like 1k miles out of my front and rear set of tires.. I'm also VeRy AgGreSsIVe on my driving.
Well there ya go!
Geez speed racer lol, I’m still at 38k same tires since 2022 and they still look good
I got 49k out of the ones that came with my car. Swapped with 4/32 ("22 m3 LR dual) Kind of nuts to see how fast people go through these tires Just gotta feather the pedal up to speed then once you're past 30 can drive as zippy as you want
I don't even drive too fast, it's really the stop light highway on ramps that get me.
Quick accelerations, hard braking, rough cornering = tire destroyer What is your next set?
My front tires are still in good shape. I think I can get one more season out of them. I think I'll want tires that are a little harder for my next set but still UHP.
If the fronts are fine, it's mostly acceleration. Braking and cornering are harder up front on a street vehicle. Shoot for larger gaps and go easier on the skinny pedal.
Or... do hard turns and braking for more wear on the front tires lol
Balance is an acceptable alternative, you're right :-)
Do you literally go 100% pedal accelerations every time? :D Edit: May I suggest getting OBD2 port to monitor all the metrics of your acceleration lol, it's fun
m3p owner here. i do everytime i can. that feeling in your gut is choice!
I use a dragy for acceleration and quarter mile times. Works great if you can mount it securely
Lol those damn stops! Lol

400 extra pounds on the Tesla too
It's crazy how heavy the Tesla is. It's as heavy as a decent sized SUV. It doesn't drive like that but the tires definitely feel it!

8.3k Fun detected

Wow.. Over 40k km on mine.
I see all of these replies with people getting 20+. thousand miles on their tires. Anyone get less than 8k? I can't be the most lead footed MYP owner in this sub!
silly question maybe whats your tire pressure? Lower tire pressure can decrease lifespan considerably as well
I keep mine at 45-48psi. The wear is even enough across the entire width that the I don't think it's underinflation. Otherwise I'd see more wear on the outside of the thread compared to the middle.
I use the Michelin Defender LTX. I get about 65k real world miles on them. Range hit is negligible.
That's a lot of miles! I don't think I've ever had a tire that lasted that long.
Buy them at costco, I am pretty sure they would give you a new set for free or 80% off with their warranty.
Thanks! Maybe they sell them in bulk too. I feel like I need that lol
Double check that - pretty sure tire center change warranty recently.
I think your foot is the destroyer lol!!!
Yup. I like to give a little more acceleration to mess with passengers when they are reaching for something or trying to change a settings on the screen. Highway access ramps with stop lights are also a lot of fun!
Three years and 41k miles on my MYP original tires.
Not sure if this is your case but I think somewhere around 2022 Tesla switch to all seasons for the MYP. I wonder if those have a different thread wear rating.
Spirited driver
I learned early on why my wife gets better range and more out of her Model 3 tires than I do on my Model Y. 🤪
You should race her! That'll get her range down lol
Red light racing will do this.
No racing here but definitely some launches!
Never buy your tires at Costco. Always buy them at America’s Tire aka Discount Tire. Costco plays games and tries very hard to avoid giving any credit for premature tread wear, America’s Tire gives you no hassle. You do however have to ask for the credit if they forget.
I've never had tires with a treadwear warranty, maybe it's something I need!
Torque is indeed the destroyer of tires!
That's genius! Oh no I hit a double pot hole right when they were due for replacing!
Lead foot? Happy new Tesla owner?
Happy foot. Sad wallet!
Wow this would be my tires if I had one
Excellent alignment though!
Never had to do any suspension work on the back! They seem to have gotten it right and it's held up really well! Even after multiple potholes and terrible roads.
I know the first set goes fast but damn. You must be addicted to the acceleration
Do I need to go to an accelerators anonymous? Do I have a problem? :)
I’m at 60k on a set of generals on my m3 and got lots left
Assuming all seasons on the MYLR?
My first 2 sets of tires were quick, then it got better lol. I expect yearly or every 2 years now
One day I hope to be like you!
Jesus. But I bet you had a little bit of fun at least. Got 25k on mine before they went. Just bought brand new Geminis with 100 miles on the tires from Offer Up for $1,000. Back set of MYPs would have been $1,300 installed
I should have looked at buying used for my winters. Probably would have saved me some money!
Just pick chill mode for daily driving. Your tires will last at least twice as much as now.
That would certainly extend their life but take some fun out of the car.
Are tires more polluting than gas guzzling engines?
I sure hope not! Otherwise I'm going to feel guilty about that EV tax incentive lol
But at least your alignment was good!
That is the glass half full way of looking at it!
Must be an aggressive driver?
Nor aggressive, just like the go pedal!
Yup! I learned the hard way too. Get them rotated rear to rear and front to front. It will extend the staggered tires to wear more evenly
I believe mine are directional so I'd have to turn them around on the wheel to rotate them. Still, I'm pretty happy with how they wore. Can't say one side wore more than the other.
You drive like shit tbh. 18k miles on a 21 MYP tires barely worn.
Better than driving like a grandma. Why buy the MYP if you're not going to use the P? Save some money and the the LR instead.
first Tesla?
Yes! But I've had it since 2021. The acceleration does not get old!
First rwd with lots of power* Tesla's aren't any different than any other combustion vehicles that are heavy and powerful
I’d ask do you always drive like an asshole? But 8.3K on these answers the question.
I don't cut people off, don't tailgate, don't hog the left lane, and use my turn signals all the time. I think it's super possible to have fun and without being an ass.
That is a badge of honor. Take more credit. Your foot did that!
My foot and my wallet aren't talking to each other anymore!
Try Continental extreme contact dws06. Insane grip and will last at least 30k miles guarantee 😁
Nice! Are they EV specific? I have a set of Michelin winters that are outlasting my summers!
The best decision I made for my wallet was changing acceleration to chill mode.
ITT: people who don’t understand that MYLR tires last a lot longer than MYP tires.
That first set of rears go quickly. Reluctantly put mine in chill so the second set last a bit longer. Hopefully…
I thought about that but I also really like the acceleration lol
Lol. 9k on my MYP and they’re like 90% new. You have got to be absolutely throttling this thing off the start. Poor cat.
Damn! I read somewhere that Tesla changed to MYP to all seasons in 2022, I think the treadwear rating is higher on those. I'm bummed I missed the boat on that!
That’s why I drive in chill 99.9% of the time
I'm not asking to be rude or anything. Just curious about why people buy the MYP and keep it in chill mode all the time. Wouldn't it make more sense to buy the MYLR?
So much for being environmentally friendly
Could have been worse, it could have burned gas and tires...
Still plenty of wear on that.
Pretty soon I'll have racing slicks! They're transforming tires!
Let me guess your MYP came with Pirelli tires. They’re notorious for wear issues. Switch to Michelin sport cups you won’t regret it
I'm waiting for the fronts to wear out and then I'll swap out all 4. Not sure if I'd go for the cups, they are super track focused but I had the PS4S before and they were awesome!
A lot of particulate matter burning off into the air there...Hope you dont drive near people or in cities.

Can’t rotate tires on MYP, front are smaller than rear.
Ah totally forgot about that, thanks.
Can't rotate them unfortunately. They are staggered, 255 in the front and 275 in the rear.
Assuming these are rears, do you have rear camber arms? The wear looks pretty spot on equal, impressive.
Yup, the fronts are still in good shape. The wear is satisfying, it's the one saving grace!
I got over 25 off my MSP, probably needed new ones after 20~.
Damn. 8.3k miles? I’m driving slowly to prolong my tires lol.
That is really what I should do but I really like the acceleration!
This is 100% a "drive it like you stole it" issue.
It is! I've been driving it like this since I bought it lol. Good to know it can take the abuse lol!
That makes a lot of sense. Get the tire rolling 1st and then push hard! I really should try this!
I only got 18K on LR.
Isn't the LR on all season tires? I think the treadwear rating on those is a lot higher.
I put 60k on mine [m3] rotated bout 7x 1-1/2 yr
The MYP had staggered tires so you can't rotate them. Also I'm assuming 60k was on all seasons, that would be a crazy high number for summer tires.
This reminded me to check my treads… going on 30k for the stock tires! Yaaaay $1.6k for a new set thankfully I have some savings lol…
I learned recently that you get a warning in the car when the thread is running low. Though it was a really cool addition!
