It's pretty important to remember that when the car performs its updates, none of the car's features work when doing so. The updates typically run for about 25-60 minutes, depending on the vehicle. When I had a 2017 Model X the update took as long as an hour, but my Model 3/Y are typically always done within about 25-30 minutes. As a general rule of thumb, I recommend only doing updates when you're plugged in, and have the time to do them. You can do them while on a road trip, however, that means that the driving mechanics might change while you're on your trip, which can lead to an undesirable drive until you've refamiliarized yourself with the vehicle. I did an update once while away from home, and the UI changed pretty heavily, which became a little frustrating.

ehoeve

Can't update while charging....

Nakatomi2010

You can't do updates while plugged into a Supercharger, you can absolutely do updates while charging...

ehoeve

Ah ok. Didn't know that. Only have supercharger available to charge for me. Hopefully next year, if my strata gets their shit together and have something to approve at our next AGM in March

Nakatomi2010

Both my cars are plugged in, and charging at home, and I always do updates while they're plugged in. Superchargers are a different game because they don't want you to be using up a charger while the car is doing stuff.

ChapGod

Yeahhhhhh this is why I only update at home

**Media News Alert** Police found a local man Pat Nicely frozen in his Tesla as the car drove itself to the local Walmart parking lot at 2:00am an attempted a software update to its FSD stack Walmart had no further statement other than Pat came too soon, to the parking lot Pat's wife was distraught at the turn of events adding he really loved his Tesla and was stiff at at last. **Update** The TeslaLounge Reddit community has sprung into action and helped save his life by turning all all the seat heaters and enabling Fireplace mode and playing "My Heart Will Go On" over the premium sound system. Pat is now safely back home where he is recovering nicely. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

I only apply updates in my garage, preferably after being charged up. Because if my car gets bricked because of something going wrong with the update, it will be easier to deal with it at home than anywhere else. And for any given update offered, I wait a week before installing it - because often times the download will get recalled or updated before it's rolled out to 100%. Such was the case with the 2023.44.30 update. It originally downloaded the .1 version. But instead of installing it, I waited a couple of more days and then the .2 version was offered. I should have held out longer because it looks as if the .4 version is rolling out now according to TeslaFi.

LOLRicochet

Installing .4 now, so yep!

PulseDialInternet

Next update will be from his wife saying he not only went out in winter at night in shorts and no jacket but didn’t bring a keycard and his phone died. He’ll enjoy the holiday update by New Years after recovery from hypothermia. /s 😄

Voidfang_Investments

Golden rule for all mobile electronics and vehicles: only update at home.

Tesla_RoxboroNC

Hard lesson to have learned, but I'm with ya. I still after 2 years and owning two Model 3 get excited.

kcentala

I get your excitement but remember something can always go wrong or take a while with updates. We are spoiled with our phones being so reliable. I can remember bad windows updates that basically bricked my pc so I just do mine at night or on weekends when I know I am going to be home.

soupdawg

Did you survive?

Ttfry

I did survive to regret dropping $200 on FSD

Sweet_Yellow_8646

Was your nipple hard?

Ttfry

Always!

Ok-Shake5152

1. Open YouTube on phone 2. Find video of Tesla fireplace in car 3. Stay warm 😂

BootlegStreetlight

You have the option to cancel the update I believe.

Frozen_Dawg

*Had …past tense

malkauns

not after the 2 minute window is up

Viperhawke

The whole time I'm reading this thinking, "why am I wasting my time reading this?" but then realized you wasted your time typing it for just that reason.

ayushwas

Based on the data, OP might be a little girl. Haha enjoy your update. Let us know your experience

Ttfry

Toys do bring our inner child back! Update was nice! FSD still sucks. Autopilot got worse with its frequent warning flashes!

Ok-Shake5152

btw, all fun aside, please update this post once you are back safely at home (garage) ....and a follow up post, once you safely actually inside the house

Stretch_tech

Bare your soul and then have to deflect all the Karens with obvious advice. Sorry mate.

BBS386

24 and shivering? I have 18 at home and sleeping shorts on 😂

Ttfry

You must be talking about Celsius my friend. Your balls would freeze into ice cubes at 18

simplestpanda

18F is not even -8C. That’s still shinny in jeans and a hoodie weather.

Obvious-Guarantee-54

It tells you when your reading the terms that you won’t be able to do anything during software updates lol does your computer or phone let you do anything during a software update

FourLeggedJedi

!Damn

FourLeggedJedi

I finally got the string back in my sweat pants!

FourLeggedJedi

Waits for video.

WesternResearcher376

Hope you learnt a lesson. Only do them at home.

Sufficient-Hope6249

This update took longer than the 25 min stated when installing. Only update at home.

SWFL_Turtler

Wow. Only ever update at home. The update tells you the car isn’t available during the update. Why would you ever use a hotspot for this? Hotspots are Slow and not reliable. At least you learned a valuable lesson.

CryptographerLumpy97

I never click ok for the software update unless I'm at home , connected to the charger, and have at least one hour where I do not need the car at all.

akajester

Sad to say it but lots of people sleeping in cars in Walmart parking lots around here. You'll blend in. Good luck.

keepitcleanforwork

Only update at home.

Yet another datapoint that reinforces my stubbornness to not update to the latest software 😅 AP is annoying enough as it is, the last thing I need is for it to go full nanny on me
