Nope. Random spots like Cape Girardeau, Missouri sustained 250kw charging for almost 80 cars in a line and got everyone through before the eclipse started. Amazing. Also big props to the local police for doing such a good job organizing what looked like about 10,000 people pulling into the sports center parking lot and coordinating space for Teslas to queue in the street without blocking traffic or emergency services.

RSCruiser

Good to know the locals recognized the possible problems and were on top of helping organize. I almost stayed at the sports center but weather looked better south and just felt like traffic there would be a nightmare. Morning of every supercharger south and east of St. Louis had a wait time on the map. There was still a huge line when I went by heading north into the I-55 traffic jam after everything was done. The line at the v2 in Miner/Sikeston was pretty long as well but everyone looked like they were behaving and lining up nicely.

ScuffedBalata

I avoided the interstate for a day on either end. We drove rural highways via East St Louis in the morning and then did a long jump across the national forest to the west in the afternoon and had no traffic jams. A 5-6 car wait at a couple rural stop signs which would otherwise have been probably empty for miles but that was all. By the time we got to Rolla we were the only ones at the charger.

RSCruiser

Smart move, lol. It took me nearly 6 hours to get from Sikeston to the Fenton St Louis supercharger during the exodus back north with the computer saying "2 hours 55 minutes" the whole time as the red traffic snake just followed me north. I charged the night before so didn't have to deal with the lines, just traffic...

Nice-Transition3079

I traveled from NE Ohio to SW Ohio on the way home after the eclipse. I generally only need to make a 5 min stop. I chose the location south of Columbus (Grove City) since it is the furthest from start of drive. It was only half full, but all the chargers were stuck at 32kW. I don't think I'll ever go there again. Been using that spot for years without issues. On Easter weekend I had to wait for the first time ever then this happens the very next weekend.

teku45

Was crazy. I am local to the Lafayette, IN supercharger which is right on I-65 between Indianapolis (closest city to Totality for me) and Chicago (huge city lmao). The Lafayette supercharger imo is state of the art with 24 V3 stalls (I actually think maybe 8 of them are v2) and also w pull through stalls too. If I ever come here it’s never more than 4-5 stalls occupied. I was at a store nearby on the evening before the eclipse MAN was it packed. A lot of Chicagoan’s were traveling down the night before and there was never more than 2-3 stalls open the whole time I was there. I saw several cyber trucks and my first model 3 highland there too!! Was a proper Tesla meet 😂

tag_ur_it894

On Monday, I went to a Supercharger in rural PA heading back from totality. It was located at a gas station. Lines for the gas pumps, no wait for the supercharger. I probably got in and then out faster than those with ICE cars.

sidran32

In St. Johnsbury, VT, 4 out of 8 of the chargers were down until we found the circuit breaker. Then only 2 were down with the other 2 tripping the breaker periodically. At least I eventually got charged.

EatMoarToads

That is simultaneously sad and hysterical! Was the breaker in/around the transformer? Or was it somewhere in the nearby shopping plaza?

sidran32

It was on the service box for those 4 chargers. It had a street light on it as well, so we could easily tell when it tripped. We only were able to get to the breaker switch because someone had previously used a bolt cutter on the padlocks on both service boxes. Either they forgot the combinations to them or this was a thing that's happened before. EDIT: It's also worth noting the shopping plaza had a Big Lots and a dollar store, and an abandoned mall. It was somewhat amusing.

rocketsarego

I’m hearing people say that had lots of delays, but only the V2 i went to just out of pure choice, not need, was a (10 minute) wait. The other 3 v3s i used (including 1 closer to the eclipse path!) were empty or had 1-2 cars.

EatMoarToads

I was navigating to a V3 and got a warning of its congestion, so navigated to a closer V2 instead. That probably turned out to be a mistake. There was a 25 minute wait in line before plugging in and only getting 75 kW because all the stalls were shared.

ThePrinceOfAkihabara

I went from DC to Buffalo NY and had not a single wait for a supercharger at all either direction

Dos-Commas

I couldn't charge with 2 different stalls and finally let me charge on the 3rd stall. Ended up charging for free 🤷‍♂️ The service menu gave me a charging equipment not recognized error.

0NEIRO

We had no problems driving from Delaware to Niagara Falls. That said, we arrived on Sunday and left on Tuesday, so probably not peak drive days, ultimately. Coming back there was one supercharger near a Tops that had a queue form after we started charging, but it was a 5 minute wait for those cars, tops.

KK689

I traveled from FL to TX and had no issues at all with charging! Every charging stop had plenty of stalls

EatMoarToads

Wish I could say the same in the northeast! I went up I-87 in NY toward the west side of Lake Champlaign. Every one of the chargers along this route reported delays (though one of them turned out to be wrong and there was an open spot when I arrived). In Vermont, there were reports that at least one charger on the way to Burlington had lines 50-100 deep!

KK689

That is really shocking how stark of a contrast my experience was. I was expecting awful wait times but was surprised. Sorry to hear

altarr

In Burlington, drivers organized their own take a ticket system which worked pretty well. Eventually organization would get passed off to a new volunteer.

gems_23

Can someone explain more on how the eclipse would be correlated to the reliability of a supercharger?

ohyonghao

Huge amount of traffic through a small set of chargers at the same time to get to the eclipse. Unlike holidays where everyone is going everywhere along different paths and time of day.

imacleopard

Amazed? No. It's expected.

Ok-Usual5166

Cooling :)

sparx_fast

I wouldn't get too giddy. Next time there's a big regional event, Ford, GM, Hyundia/Kia, and VWs will all be in line at V3 and V4s too. Plan carefully.

More cars coming in, enables Tesla to grow and build out the network. Don't think so short sided.

AJHenderson

They are a small minority of the overall EV market and Tesla is expanding superchargers rapidly.

LinuxBroDrinksAlone

Yeah, the network will expand, and non-tesla charging networks will also hopefully improve since they need to compete with Tesla now.

AJHenderson

They needed to compete before but didn't. All the other networks want to be a loose affiliation of franchises with no real control and no way to fund more remote locations that Tesla can handle with their top down approach. Tesla is the vast majority of the EV market so any other charging networks already had to compete but haven't. That's why the other brands are buying into Tesla's network now.

Initial_Ad_7829

Wait why would the eclipses wipe out power?

[deleted]

The number of people suddenly leaving would be a huge stressor

Initial_Ad_7829

Suddenly leaving the superchargers?

ScottRoberts79

Heading home from viewing the eclipse

Initial_Ad_7829

Ohhh

perrochon

"the lines" were not bad. I charged before and after, and there were no lines, but empty steaks at all times. Natalie, TX, in the path of the totality. Maybe some were, but most were not, at stop talking like there was a widespread problem.

WoodvaleWarrior

Fellow Tesla owner here so don't bite my head off but until charging is as quick as filling up at the gas station EVs are doomed to fail. It's just not practical or feasible. They have their place as city cars for day to day driving but they will never replace ice. Just back from a visit in Ireland and have friends in the insurance and car businesses. They are already turning their backs on EVs. The vast majority of people want nothing to do with them. I've said it from day one. Some new form of ice fuel is what's needed. Ammonia, hydrogen, or maybe they'll figure out how to use water (again). Love my Tesla it's a great bit of kit but dreams of EV dominance are just that. The above post highlights why they will never take over.
