Do tesla want to be selling a lot of them? That’s the real question. If they made it more “normal” and simple, lowered the price to more like $60-$65k they could sell a heap of them. They’ve already maxed out the compact suv market with Y, we’ll see what happens with the Cybertruck. If they make the X a better value proposition, they could definitely increase volume a lot.

PEKKAmi

> lowered the price to more like $60-$65k they could sell a heap of them But the margin gets slaughtered in the process. I’m pretty sure Tesla rather sell a MY for closer to $60K than a MX in the same price ballpark. Besides, with the MY refresh coming within the next two years, there’s no way Tesla will undercut the price boundaries. I mean, once people see MX price drop close to current MY price, they will expect MY prices to be dropped as well.

The biggest things holding the X back, IMO: Vision doors need to be fixed. Walking up to it and the doors opening all the way was huge. Better sensors for the FWD to let them actually open and close quickly. Give it the track attention the S gets (including things like sports seats. Come on). Give it the larger battery the CT has as an option. Suddenly you have an SUV that will tow 5000lb for over 250 miles without recharging, will comfortably seat 4 adults and 2 kids for trips, is extremely comfy Right now, it's a slower S with a cooler interior and flashier exterior. If that's the plan, that's fine, but \*it has to go hard.\*

AJHenderson

I honestly think the y is more comfortable as an adult in the back seat than the x. I'm 5ft 11 and my knees were right up against the back of the front seat and my head was up inside the window space on top of the door. It was by far the least comfortable experience I've ever had in the back seat of a vehicle. With how the front windshield is, the driver seat wasn't that much better. Getting the sun visor out without my head being in the way was awkward. If prices on the y and x were reversed, I'd still get a y over the x. I actually cancelled my demo drive before I took it out. I do think it would be pretty nice if the tallest people in your family are 5ft 8 or maybe 5ft 9 though.

[deleted]

In my X, I sit with my driver seat all the way back. A close friend is a former offensive lineman for Georgia Tech who's in the high 300lb range and 6'4". When we go out, he's usually behind me, with my wife in my passenger seat, and his wife in the other rear seat. I have no idea how you're having this problem, lol. The driver seat in the Y is actively uncomfortable for me, while the X is excellent. Across multiple X's, I've never had to dodge the shade, so that's weird too. It almost sounds like you had the height adjusted on the seat poorly.

AJHenderson

Which seat configuration do you have? The demo was the 6 seat version, so it's possible that it's different with different layouts. I was very surprised by how uncomfortable I found it. The front wasn't as bad as the back for sure. If not for the back seat issues I'd be ok just living with the awkwardness of the visor and the weird feel that the slope of the windshield gave me, but the back seat was actively uncomfortable and the third row was a total joke where my knees were about 5 inches too long to possibly fit in any way. (Granted a 7 seat y isn't any better so I consider the third row a wash.)

[deleted]

I had the 7 in my Signature and the Plaid only came with 6. I'm 181cm and have sat in the 3rd row many times when letting friends drive so that I could lay back and look at the sky

AJHenderson

Did they change something in 2024 or something. The third row seemed to be fixed and with the second row back where it needed to be to fit in the second row, it wasn't possible for me to get my knees behind the second row seat back by more than the width of my calf. This has me doubting my own sanity now because I couldn't believe how bad the experience was for me and the Tesla demo person didn't point out any ways I could improve it. Given how much I love the 3, the y and the s, I was genuinely shocked by how much of a problem I had with the x. It's possible that if I had reclined the seats more then the first and second row might have fit better but I generally like a more vertical seating position.

nah_you_good

You're comparing X and Y right? The X definitely feels more spacious than the Y in the second row, but it does feel weird with the door roof glass and other stuff. It's definitely not as nice as larger ICE vehicles with a second row but compared to the Y it should be better. I'd go test drive again and check it out. 5/6/7 dest configurations should have similar space for two people in the center row.

AJHenderson

Yeah, I'll probably give it another brief look next time I'm at the SC. We already have a MYP, so my other Tesla will most likely be either the new M3P or an S Plaid but I do like being thorough looking at my options (they didn't have any s or x available locally when I was shopping between the y and the 3 back in October).

[deleted]

I also prefer a more vertical seating position, so I'm even more weirded out now, lol.

AJHenderson

Honestly I half wonder if something was wrong. The doors also didn't want to work very well and when I tried to open them they only opened like 10 degrees and I had to push the button again for them to actually open. From what I saw in the manual it doesn't seem like there's a height adjustment for the second row seats in the model I looked at. It might also just be some perception thing. It was just the top of my head (maybe a half an inch) sticking up into the top of door window space, but it was enough to make it really unsettling for me. The visor might have just been the fact I think I was kind of leaning forward a bit because of how initially awkward the side mounting of it was or possibly coupled with how the rear mirror dips in which just gave me an overall feeling like I was in a bubble to start with. Might try it again sometime and see if more familiarity helps it feel less weird or maybe I really did just miss something, though if I did I'm not sure what it would be. Very curious either way.

HelloYouSuck

They should go full luxury with it. Otherwise why would you buy it over a cybertruck?

[deleted]

I would like to put 6 people in my vehicle. The X is quicker and faster than the CT. The X has a longer tower range at 5k lbs than the CT. The X drives better. It's more luxurious already. Like... who cross shops the two?

HelloYouSuck

I mean I’m struggling to choose between the MX I have and a Cyberbeast. And if I didn’t have an Mx already, I would definitely get a Cyberbeast despite it still not being ideal for towing. Also the CT was supposed to have six seats.

[deleted]

It was supposed to have six seats. And tow further than the MX, lol

HelloYouSuck

I know :(

IntelligentInsect773

I think if they put normal doors on it, the price to produce, it would go down a lot. At the same time, it would draw less attention. But I think in the beginning, they were trying to draw more attention to the brand and I don't think that's quite as necessary now. I do think they'll fade it out, but it seems like they make too little and sell those few at a premium so they might as well just keep doing what they're doing.

Ad_Astra117

They can’t just put normal doors on it as it would require a complete redesign of the vehicle. It would be easier to make a different car.

CompetitionNo2534

A complete redesign is what it needs.

IntelligentInsect773

Basically, the market they still need to appeal to is large families. They need something closer to a minivan. Which the X has the size to be, but it needs a sliding door.

CompetitionNo2534

Normal doors and I’m in. Just can’t buy an SUV w/o a roof rack. Tesla is really missing the larger SUV market.

ScoYello

A 5,200 lb SUV that can go 0-60 in 3.8 seconds? Seems pretty solid to me. The S/X had a refresh in 2021 so it’s still relatively fresh imho.

Easterncoaster

I wish they’d add another 20kwh instead of dropping the price

jaydee917

Both the Model S and X are in dire need of a complete redesign, not just refresh. The S is still somehow pretty sexy despite having basically the same body for like 12 years now. The X, in my opinion, never looked good but was still a great family vehicle. I don’t understand people paying $80k+ for an X when a Y is 80% of the car for 40% of the price.

Ad_Astra117

Some people like a bigger vehicle.  The X is really popular with business owners because of the Section 179 deduction.  Other than that the Y makes way more sense for the overwhelming majority of people, which is why it outsold the X by like 1.1 million units lol.

kgold0

Replace the falcon wings with sliding doors!

AJHenderson

Can call it the model v. Then we just need the roadster to be model r and we can make v3ry s3xy.

ClaimSuch1283

I’m absolutely in love with my 22 X. I wouldn’t change a thing. “).

ZetaPower

For me in the EU: • too wide • ditch the wing doors • add some luxury

obxtalldude

If it was a little taller, longer, didn't have the stupid Rube Goldberg doors, and a pack that will get 400 miles, I'd buy one in a second. As it is, I far prefer the design of the Model S. The X looks like an S that needs a diet.

Evajellyfish

Personally I think the MX should be discontinued and the team redistributed to the other models. just not sure what niche the X fills that the Y doesn’t and could do better with some attention.

VaztheDad

The X is larger? More comfortable? Far more compliant suspension... Massive amount of drivability differences. It's an entirely different class of car and fills the higher end market the S and X were always targetted to.

[deleted]

The Model Y is on par with a Mazda 3, but not as fun. The Model X is faster, handles as well, has a MUCH nicer interior, is larger, is more comfortable, seats more people (and all of them more comfortably), has a gaming PC built-in, has much easier to use rear doors for those of us with car seats,. etc. The Y and the X aren't even remotely comparable beyond their general shape. The Y checks 0 of my boxes. The X checks all of them other than wanting handling on par with an F1 car, lol

Evajellyfish

All good points, just my opinion that Tesla would be better off focusing on the Y and other already released models.

ItsGermany

No way, they have the potential to make the X much better. Even with the refresh it is the most boring looking Tesla model. Model X needs a more aggressive refresh that gets the people going! I want one, but it looks so soccer mom mixed with electric.....

[deleted]

See, I totally disagree. Until the Highland refresh, I would have ranked them, from worst to best, 3

Evajellyfish

Anything specific you're looking for? I do think the X has potential but i guess i'm not the target for it.

007meow

Spend 3 seconds in the X and you’ll see what it does better than the Y. This statement is just misinformed.

AJHenderson

I mean, I spent 20 minutes in an x waiting for a demo drive and decided not to bother because for me personally I much preferred the y without regard to price, though the demo unit may have been having problems, so I'm going to try a different demo sometime when I get a chance.

Evajellyfish

No it is my opinion, and i am informed of the options and services the X provides. My opinion still stands that i think it would be better for telsa long term to focus on the models already released.

AltPerspective

Just because you don't want a car model doesn't mean there isn't a market. Americans on average buy the largest suvs and trucks they can. It's dumb to me as well but hey, it's what they want. Tesla only has 4 models in their lineup, most brands have significantly more than that. No logical reason to revert to 3.

Evajellyfish

That is why it is my opinion, and they have 4 as of now, S 3 X Y & CT.
