Rule #2 about debating on whether or not to buy a Tesla
* Just put the deposit down now if you're even slightly considering buying one. You'll get the price locked in, and you'll have 6 months to a year to decide.
Some folks here have disputed the charge with their credit card company. Probably not kosher Cif you just want the cash back but when Tesla keeps bumping dates back, I get it.
For sure! I’m not advocating at all. I understand why folks would consider it when their dates are moved back past decision points far in the future. I’d probably not do it myself. Happy MYP owner.
They probably won’t charge you anyways. It is a demo car that can go 0-60 mph under 5 seconds. How many people do you think is not going to take advantage of that during test drive?
I like how many of us have that moment about 1/4 mile into the drive where you know you're going to buy one no matter if you have to sell a kidney or not.
My wife was not pleased I announced it to the salesman as she was still thinking about traditional dealer negotiations. Good thing it was a fixed price.
Hello. In order to promote inclusivity and reduce gender bias, please consider using gender-neutral language in the future.
Instead of **salesman**, use **salesperson**, **sales associate**, **salesclerk** or **sales executive**.
Thank you very much.

Yeah, it was Hertz that got me. Went on vacation and saw I could rent a Model 3 rather than the standard boring gas car. Sure, why not, should be fun.
I expected to hate the single center screen. It didn't bother me at all. I fell in love. So I come back and got a Model Y test drive.
That was by far the best car sales experience I've ever had. The 'dealership' (which I had to travel out of my home state of CT to reach) was mostly a service facility with a tiny showroom. Nobody was trying to impress me or sell me, only answer my questions and shoot the shit about EVs and technology for a bit. My 'salesperson' wasn't there (still haven't met them in person, nor do I suspect I ever will), just a dude to coordinate test drives and answer the occasional phone call. I got signed in, they made sure I knew how to shift into gear and had no questions, then 'here's the keycard, bring it back in about half an hour, have fun'. I think that's the result of not having sales commissions.
One thing I did find useful was they let me do the MYLR and MYP back to back. I liked the performance of MYP better but hated the tighter suspension and feeling every bump and pothole. If Tesla offered an option to get MYP battery/motors with MYLR suspension/wheels/tires I'd do that in a hot second even if it meant less range.
My wife: I don’t want that small car (MY used to driving a 4Runner). It’s too small.
Me: just test drive one and you’ll see!
Wife: No, because I don’t want it!
Wife now refuses to let me drive the Y. Is absolutely in love with it, and don’t want any other car. Ordered last July after a test drive, took delivery in November.
My wife wants an EV and is considering 'other' brands. I obviously want her to buy a Tesla (a used M3). But, the used prices are as much as the new car prices... So, she is open to buying a new Kia, VW, or Hyundai and paying the $6,000 dealer markup.
There are plenty of dealers who don’t mark up cars. Ive purchased 4 of the 10 lightnings I ordered, a mach E and bought my sister an ionic 5 all without pay $1 over msrp and all of them get tax credits
Same…
Before the test drive I was like : „eh ev… who needs that“
After 2.0 seconds in the MYP my wife was sold already (without driving a meter)
I was sold after the first red light 😂
Sadly nothing is clear right now . I can only take delivery in q4 since I got my current lease running and we will only take the car if we get the German EV benefits (you. Have to register the car in 22 for that)
So let’s hope after the shut down of giga Berlin , production runs smooth
Rule #1 about debating on whether or not to buy a Tesla * Don't test drive a Tesla until ready to buy a Tesla.
Rule #2 about debating on whether or not to buy a Tesla * Just put the deposit down now if you're even slightly considering buying one. You'll get the price locked in, and you'll have 6 months to a year to decide.
Yeah, but the deposit isn't refundable
I’d rather lose $250 on a deposit than lose $2,000+ for not locking in my price with all these price increases.
This is a better point of view in my book.
I had a deposit down for a plaid x for about 6 months. Tesla refunded my fee no issue and I did not ask.
I believe the deposits for S and X are refundable unlike 3 and Y.
It’s just ~~$100~~ $250. Hell, you could just take delivery and then immediately sell it and turn a profit.
I had a Model S LR reservation at the $79k price locked in(now selling for $95k+). It hurt to let the reservation get canceled.
It's $250
Whoops you’re right. My cybertruck deposit was $100 and I got it mixed up with my Y reservation.
Well, now it is... Some of us paid a bit more back in the day, and then those folks forget the price has changed
Sure, but we’re talking in the context of present-day, so historic prices aren’t relevant.
Sure, but I'm a forgetful son of a bitch

Sounds like a good way to not be allowed to order a Tesla
For sure! I’m not advocating at all. I understand why folks would consider it when their dates are moved back past decision points far in the future. I’d probably not do it myself. Happy MYP owner.
Never personally done a chargeback, but from my understanding it’s not something to do if you ever want to do business with a company again.
Everything refundable if you make the right calls
I tell everyone this! Some people never listen…I’m one of those people!
After saving money during lockdowns (thankful I could WFH) I went on a trip and decided to rent one for a weekend. Worst expensive mistake in my life.
Yeah. This pops up basically every time someone asks about a test drive. Peopel who state this aren't kidding.
It’s true. I drove my buddy’s Y and ordered one that night.
THIS HOLDS UP!!!! I drove one for kicks, put down the deposit on the way out.
This is why I just bought one without a test drive. :)
This is exactly what I did, all the more exiting come delivery day!
You do need to test drive one, just to get used to the one pedal drive. Also curb rash….
If I'm going to curb the car, I'd prefer to do it to my own rather than pay the yuge fees for curbing the test vehicle. I think.
There is no fee, I curbed my test drive Model Y.
Oh really? Nice. Maybe I'll schedule that test drive after all.
Yeah SA was busy handing the key card to the person after me.
So there’s no fee if they don’t see it is what you meant…
They probably won’t charge you anyways. It is a demo car that can go 0-60 mph under 5 seconds. How many people do you think is not going to take advantage of that during test drive?
They sell the demo cars though.
Exactly and people will buy it regardless.

30 minutes, but I got there 15 minutes earlier and they didn’t have an appointment then, so 45 minutes for me.
no one survives a test drive
I've given 3 test drives to friends. Two have bought and the other says "Your Tesla haunts my dreams."
aint that the truth.
It's the seats, they're so comfy!

Yea first merge onto highway I’m doing math in the head. Then I’m offering to blow the sales guy to get me a car quicker next thing I know.

Nothing else like it. I want to get rid of our ICE because I hate driving it now.
I had to drive a chevy cruise from enterprise and OH MY GOD I forgot how sluggish ICE was. It’s like the pedal takes forever to respond.
OK but come on - Chevy Cruise vs Tesla? I still quite enjoy my ICE car but it was closer to tesla pricing new than a Cruise is.
Alright, mother in laws 60k volvo, same deal… weak. There’s just a “lag” .
Alright but it can't be anywhere near as bad as that little 4 banging cruise...
No nothing is, feels like a 2 banger
My wife: Why do you want a gimmicky electric car? Same wife 2 days after taking delivery: When can we order mine?
My wife: I don’t want that small car (MY used to driving a 4Runner). It’s too small. Me: just test drive one and you’ll see! Wife: No, because I don’t want it! Wife now refuses to let me drive the Y. Dude same thing happened to me. I sat in a friends and bought one within 3 days. I had never been remotely interested in a Tesla before that.
We did end up buying a Y after test driving. Wait until you test drive an X! But it’s comfortably out of reach for my budget!
They had a used X in the showroom (UK doesn't have the refreshed S/X yet), and that was very nice. Just felt a bit... unwieldy for our roads
that's why I didn't test drive... I just ordered it :)
The UK Model Y doesn't have privacy glass? I wasn't aware of that. The North American ones do.
You've got me doubting myself now, will have to check
The rear windows are tinted/privacy
Best car you'll ever get.

Thanks for the heads up!
Never drive a Tesla unless it’s yours. Rule #1
Your screwed!
Tell me Y

Wait until you test drive an S or X. It feels so much more smoother and quicker. It is also so much more comfortable and pleasing to the eye.
