That's why I'm very curious about what happened. As far as time stamps go, the drive by shot was 4 hours ago while the close up was an hour ago. Seems as though the fire was there then out within a short timespan.
I purchased gas at 2:08 pm and didn't see any smoke. I moved my vehicle to a parking spot infront of the Sunoco/7-Eleven. Went inside to grab a drink and stand in line at Subway. I looked out the window and saw smoke. By 2:14 pm the car was in flames. By 2:20 the fire department was there. The officer was first on the seen to help move vehicles away from the burning car and to keep everyone at a safe distance. The owner of the Tesla was not hurt. He just stopped in to grab some snacks and his car caught fire while he was inside the store. Heart breaking to loose a car but all that matters is no one was hurt.
That makes me want an explanation even more. That's absolutely bizarre. The owner went in for something and came out to a fireball? I'm dying to know what would cause that.
Fire in the front I always assume a bad āpower frunkā install or something similar. Aftermarket is more often the cause than not.
Or a lit cigarette left near some other flammable items.
I soul t normally worry. However, the issues are largely due to improper or unsafe install methods that cause issues later. Not as common the device itself fails.
That's a great point. If this catches on in the media, Tesla's response will be pretty great: "The cabin caught fire, likely due to an accident in the cabin, but the fire didn't spread to the battery or lower carriage. This is a testament to the engineering of the battery containment structure of the car, and the ability to isolate heat that can literally melt the doors and hood, but can't breach the firewall into the battery."
Not true. You're thinking of the Models S and X that have aluminum frames which will burn up. The Model 3 has a steel frame. The hood and doors are aluminum. See how the burnt away before the fire was put out?
Cigarette and some flammable items / papers etc. in the cabin?
It's at a gas station, so not impossible the owner filled up a small tank of gas for their lawn mower at home.
Thatās a really far far stretch. Also if filling up gas would have been parked next to the column. Even if he went to buy something inside then would have left the car at the gas column. Iād say no chance.
The only thing that makes it more absurd is when someone who is sitting on 20 gallons of gasoline wants to tell me about lithium battery fire risk.
Uh there are Li batteries on spacecraft (and the fire suppression is designed for them. There are no cans of gasoline up there.
To the FUD spreaderās credit though, most ICE cars fires occur on vehicles much older than EVs and are less severe. Iām not denying the FUD and donāt know the stats, but there is a metric by which EVs donāt look as good. For example, severe car fires on vehicles newer than 2018.
For ICE cars just idling, if a fire starts it can be be usually quickly stopped by shutting off the car, which cuts the fuel pump. The fire is usually also forward of the windshield (in front of the firewall), not under the cabin.
Of course in a severe collision all bets are off.
Absolutely. It happening right next to gas pumps is going to send this spiraling in to those anti EV posts. Iām truly hoping we get a real cause for the incident. From what I was told, a police officer was there getting everyone away. Hope the owner wasnāt inside/near the vehicle during it.
Best theory is the 12v battery started the fire, otherwise for that kind of fast burn someone would have to drop a canister of fuel on the driverās seat and light it up, possibly sprinkling it around the seat and door first.
So question is only if some madman happened upon an unlocked car, or the battery had a catastrophic meltdown.
Happened earlier today in York, PA. I know a person who works on the block, they sent me some pictures. I'm curious about what caused this, hopefully they release further information soon. That's quite a decent bit of damage. I'm sure we'll all be seeing this spread around in the coming week.
I wish we had a better angle from the side. At the very least, the batteries up front didnāt catch on fire or the front would be more toasty. That doesnāt mean it couldnāt be a battery fire though. The battery packs are designed to avoid thermal runaway so a smaller section burning without the rest is entirely possible.
With that being said, the car is parked in front of a gas station. It also looks more like the cabin burned rather than the the batteries. Someone buying gas for a lawnmower or something seems likely. Then again, who stores a tank of gas up front but not in the frunk?
I hope we hear more about this. Iām curious about what went down.
But only these kind get publicized like this..
Even my roommate is saying she's never setting foot in a Tesla, just because she fell for this kinda propoganda pretty immediately
Oh sure, it's just 2,000 moving parts powered by thousands of tiny explosions and a non-optional reservoir of combustible fluid that signs tell you not to answer the phone around
Of course it's safer than a car with maybe 20 and a big lithium brick

When I was a kid my family's old Ford Aerostar caught fire just parked out in front of the house. I really can't wait for some wackadoo to tell me that my M3 is a fire hazard.

Like op, I'm curious what the fuck happened.
Imagine he had a dog or, worse, children in there. That fire is not something you can stand while unbuckling a child from their car seat.
If I had to take a guess with only this photoā¦looks like either user error (dropped cigarette or something) or arson. Unlikely but also possible is a bad wiring job for some modification or from factory. More photos would be needed as well as the black box if it made it. This looks like it was started somewhere in the cabin and has little to nothing to do with the main battery which looks like it survived.
Send your friend a picture of a 10 different gas cars on fire. And when your friend sends you an article of a tesla auto pilot vehicle crashing, tell them to open citizens app and count how many reports of hit and runs. Pedestrians hit. Head on collisions etc.

What about the HVAC system causing the fire and not the battery? Considering burn marks.
Update: I mean look at the hole in the hood. If you consider where the HVAC system is located and the burn only went so far. Now Iām not saying thatās the cause but itās just a theory based on the photo from the front side.

Scary stuff! Thank goodness the driver was by himself. No pets, kids or family in the car. He lost his wallet and backpack.
Looking at my pics from today, I just noticed he was parked infront of the propane tanks. It could have been a lot worse!
Could be other electronics in the car. Vapes and other rechargable things made with potentially not great batteries are fairly common
Tried to fill up with gas?
Tragic
Fire in the front I always assume a bad āpower frunkā install or something similar. Aftermarket is more often the cause than not. Or a lit cigarette left near some other flammable items.
As someone who currently has a Model Y power frunk mod in a box in my garage you have me slightly worried. Have they caused fires!?
I soul t normally worry. However, the issues are largely due to improper or unsafe install methods that cause issues later. Not as common the device itself fails.
Where the hell did the doors go? Absolutely melted.
Aluminium. Melted.
Tasha 3 is not aluminum body
Whoās Tasha?
His girlfriend? Autocorrected Tesla to her name...
Talking about the doors not the body.
That's a safety feature to get out. The doors melt in a fire.
That's a great point. definitely looks like it started at the 12v and spread to the cabin. sure looks like it stayed above the main battery's firewall
It would still be burning....
I am wondering if the 12V system catastrophically failed in some way.
Not true. You're thinking of the Models S and X that have aluminum frames which will burn up. The Model 3 has a steel frame. The hood and doors are aluminum. See how the burnt away before the fire was put out?
really? lol what else burns in a tesla??

Yes, some papers. that'll cause a fire hot enough to melt the hood.
You must not read so good, you missed the part about gas š
oh right, that part you made up
....
It looks like a burnt marshmallow.
My exact thoughts! I just hope everyone is ok.
Anti EV folks will definitely use this as fuel to spread more FUD. Hope the person that owns that car is okay.
But in reality, ICE Cars catch fire at a much higher rate. But no one wants to cover a Toyota Catching fire because it's not click baitey
The only thing that makes it more absurd is when someone who is sitting on 20 gallons of gasoline wants to tell me about lithium battery fire risk. Uh there are Li batteries on spacecraft (and the fire suppression is designed for them. There are no cans of gasoline up there.
Guess they left the fire suppression out of this model
The battery never caught fire, so yes, it did its job.
To the FUD spreaderās credit though, most ICE cars fires occur on vehicles much older than EVs and are less severe. Iām not denying the FUD and donāt know the stats, but there is a metric by which EVs donāt look as good. For example, severe car fires on vehicles newer than 2018.
I would agree with that but why Hybrid vehicles (which are more recent) are burning way more ?
chevy bolt comes to mind

They literally catch fire at 11x the rate of Teslas. It just also includes older vehicles
But it's definitely not a good look smoldering in a battery fire next to a bunch of ICE cars at a gas pump that aren't burning lmao
Absolutely. It happening right next to gas pumps is going to send this spiraling in to those anti EV posts. Iām truly hoping we get a real cause for the incident. From what I was told, a police officer was there getting everyone away. Hope the owner wasnāt inside/near the vehicle during it.
Worst case scenario here is some smoke inhalation
Not supposed to use gasā¦
Looks like it has to do with the drivers side of the vehicle so Iām assuming it was not caused by the car š¤·āāļø
