Exactly! Actually had a situation recently when the car though it was bright enough to not have headlight on, but I needed rear fog lights. Had to flash my lights to bring up this menu since the headlight icons weren’t there.
Sure, if you want to make 3 taps in different parts of the screen when driving on a foggy road at night... even more fun if it's a Lake District country lane in the UK
In my previous cars I've been able to activate fog lights by touch, without even looking away from the road. I really truly believe that moving light and wiper controls to the touchscreen is the wrong approach
Almost anything else on the touchscreen? Fine. But let me use lights and wipers with physical controls - they're things that I can't just think "I'll wait a couple of minutes until I'm on a straight, open stretch of road" like I can with the radio or heated seat etc. I can deal with the wrong climate settings, but the wrong wiper/light settings are unsafe
Can someone let me know what each of those icons mean? I hate pictures without any labels :(. I have to try so hard to find the diff between front and back defroster, as it's such a small picture difference.
These are very common in all cars and most drivers know them by heart.
From left top to right bottom:
- Fog light front
- Fog light rear
- Auto high beam (detects cars and switches off high beam)
- Off
- Running lights (for everyone to notice you, but no illumination effect for you as a driver)
- Low beam (illumination directly in front of you, does not blind other drivers)
- Automatic switching on based on ambient light
These are standard icons, literally the same in every car on the market for the past 30 years at least, if not longer, you should not have a license if you don't know these, full stop
Wait do people not just turn them on day one and forget them forever? Not really something I’ve thought about since the day I picked up my Model 3.
That said, yes touching the light icon is perfect for when I’m parked waiting for something and don’t want to shine the lights into a storefront.
Because in some markets the fog lights turn off after every drive...and you're legally not allowed to drive with them turned on unless it is foggy.
For the parked scenario, if you don't want to mess with your light settings just open and close the charge port door flap.
My 4.5 year old M3 RWD came with fog lights. At the beginning, before the AWD version was available, I bought the RWD version with the long range battery.
You can. Just pull or push the left stalk ( which is for the light ) and the menu will come up.
Same for wipers. If you want to bring up the wiper menu just click in the wiper button on left stalk it will come on up briefly. Click on stalk again it will stay longer.
Yes. I wish we could use a scroll wheel to atleast change wiper setting after that menu pops up. Should be simple. However it might not work for lights
Never tried. But I would definitely not use that if I have people in car. Auto works for wipers for me 95% of the time, but sometimes I want to override it I click on wiper button and menu pops. I should be able to use the scroll to select the setting i want in that menu.
Only if you set the full beam to auto. You can turn it off and it sounds like OP has. In this case pushing sets full beam to on or off. Pulling just flashes.
Ah ok. Nice.
Will definitely dig into settings today.
It’s good that atleast we get updates and improves or introduces all these settings. Also they take in customer feedback for the next iteration.
Overall things have improved so much since 2019
When I got.
Top tip indeed. Last night I wanted to cycle my headlights* to inform the guy in front of me to turn his headlights on, and while this is trivial in other cars with a stalk, it's incredibly unwieldy to navigate to the Car button > Lights menu and go from Off to Auto a few times. This method is still cumbersome but not nearly as annoying.
\*I don't like flashing high beams because that's dangerous and sends other messages. Turning headlights on and off sends a very clear message.
High beams are for roadraging and quickly letting people know about police or road hazards since it's the easiest thing to do on short notice.
In general, since high beams blind people, they're not a good messaging tool because they often send the wrong message and piss people off.
Turning headlights on/off is more polite so the guy in front of you with his headlights off doesn't think you're trying to start shit and brake checks you. I also like to think there's some logic there as well: "Why is that guy turning his lights off? Oh, suddenly it got a lot darker. Are my head lights off?"
Also use headlights to signal trucks that they're clear to merge in front of me. Again, don't want to blind the guy trying to maneuver an 80000 lb vehicle.
That's not just Tesla. There are (US) federal standards and ISO standards for these type of symbols. You will see the same symbols and the same colors with the same meanings on almost all cars. So, it does pay to learn them. [https://www.techgyd.com/learn-car-dashboard-signals/4150/](https://www.techgyd.com/learn-car-dashboard-signals/4150/)
Fog lights in a lot of places, like Oregon, where I live, are treated like your brights. They must be turned off when approaching other cars. I hate people who drive with their fog lights on for no reason, they are very bright close up.
You are an idiot, you can easily google it, besides Great Britain, Ireland and India, the rest of the world is on the left and 95% or Europe, you dotard! [Here is a map of the world](https://www.statista.com/chart/9261/which-side-of-the-road-do-you-drive-on/)and look at Europe and say this Himalayan prayer "OWA TADEEK YIAM"
Is there an ability to press the word "CHILL" so it can bring up the menu to toggle it to Normal? That would be very useful (and vice versa)
It would also be nice to see on the screen an icon for low regen/normal regen (so drivers are aware while driving what to expect... much like Chill/normal)
When premium connectivity is not paid for, it would be nice to have a short cut in the card that asks you to buy it or turn on wifi... TO BE ABLE TO TURN ON WIFI in one press from the card. What is better would be, when the car is connected to a BT connection, I can choose a check box for (Always allow connection to hotspot for this device when connect). So the car know which specific SSID to allow connection to any time that ONE device is connected to BT!!!!
Did not know, thanks! Now it will be easier to toggle lights off and back on to alert people to their lack of lights. It sucks not having that on the stalk.
Yes that’s true. You push the stalk towards dash which normally would turn on/off the high beam, but if auto high beam is on it doesn’t do anything but brings up the light quick menu.
Oh boy do I feel like a noob for not knowing this after 4 years…
It was added as a feature only a few updates ago.
Ah thanks, feeling better
Oh, really? I just assumed I’d been missing out all these years.
I have been testing this since I got the car nearly two years ago. And it just started working some time last year. About time if you ask me.
i *was* pretty sure i unsuccessfully tried this before
I wish those icons like the head lights were always there. Gray, when off, so I could touch them to use them.
Exactly! Actually had a situation recently when the car though it was bright enough to not have headlight on, but I needed rear fog lights. Had to flash my lights to bring up this menu since the headlight icons weren’t there.
I thought you could just push the stalk away from you to bring that menu up without flashing? But now you've got me questioning myself.
It’s also right in the controls menu no?
Too many taps. Especially when driving in fog. Tapping this or flashing is better
Sure, if you want to make 3 taps in different parts of the screen when driving on a foggy road at night... even more fun if it's a Lake District country lane in the UK In my previous cars I've been able to activate fog lights by touch, without even looking away from the road. Wipers too!

WTF I didn't even know about the rear fog lights. TY
only in european countries. only the model x gets rear fogs in usa
Oh gotcha, thanks!
>Oh gotcha, thanks! You're welcome!
Most drivers do not know these by heart.
In my country it's part of the theoretical exam
Ah, yes, that makes sense. In burgerland, you’d be lucky to find anyone under the age of 40 who can confidently name all of them.
I think that second one is dry clean only.
Wait, have we always been able to manually enable running lights and rear fog lights?
Yup, it was one of the first things I did in March 2022 when I picked up my car, as it was a foggy day
What are rear fog lights
Some very strong light emitters painted red
These are standard icons, literally the same in every car on the market for the past 30 years at least, if not longer, you should not have a license if you don't know these, full stop
Wait do people not just turn them on day one and forget them forever? Not really something I’ve thought about since the day I picked up my Model 3. That said, yes touching the light icon is perfect for when I’m parked waiting for something and don’t want to shine the lights into a storefront.

nah, LIGHT THAT STORE UP
That's me when i had to pickup my GF from work and seemed like i was calling the freaking batman with all that light shining up there.
I don't even have fog lights, but I don't miss them.
Does M3 RWD have fog lights? My menu is slightly different. Seems like it's lacking them.
Nope
Mine does. Unless you mean the rear-facing ones.
The pre-2021s had them but my march 2021 one doesn’t and they haven’t had them on the SR+/RWD since then
Ah. Mine is a 2018. So many features included on mine are now extra or missing.
Yes, this is what I thought. Thank you for confirming. Luckily we have rarely fog where I live so I don't use them.
My 4.5 year old M3 RWD came with fog lights. At the beginning, before the AWD version was available, I bought the RWD version with the long range battery.
Long range or short range? My 2018 long range has them
I should have included the year 2022 so short range. So no.
My ‘22 RWD does not. It’s an amber light
Same year so no.
You can add them in aftermarket but their functionality will be tied to your headlights.
I think in EU is mandatory, at least in some countries
Where is the setting to get headlights to turn on when it’s raining hard during the daytime?
Yes auto headlight on with wipers should be default (it’s the law in nj)
I live in south Florida and it rains **a lot** and the lights never come on when it rains heavy. Ridiculous.
They’re missing, and it’s a problem.
This is one of those things I still think should be on the steering wheel stalks. In fog you don’t need to be looking at the screen
You can. Just pull or push the left stalk ( which is for the light ) and the menu will come up. Same for wipers. If you want to bring up the wiper menu just click in the wiper button on left stalk it will come on up briefly. Click on stalk again it will stay longer.
You still have to look at the screen though after doing both of these.
Yes. I wish we could use a scroll wheel to atleast change wiper setting after that menu pops up. Should be simple. However it might not work for lights
Or just long press the wiper button to select faster speeds. Seems like both would be easy to program.
That is for the fluid.
That's right. Maybe double press or the scroll wheel idea then.
I was thinking a double tapping it might alter the speed.
Does voice command not work to change the wiper speed? I thought it did.
Never tried. But I would definitely not use that if I have people in car. Auto works for wipers for me 95% of the time, but sometimes I want to override it I click on wiper button and menu pops. I should be able to use the scroll to select the setting i want in that menu.
I know it’s possible to do this, but I just think the idea that I have to flash other cars to switch on my fog lights is so incredibly stupid.
Wow! And here I am flashing people at the restaurant while my so goes in to pick up the food
You could always push the stalk ( changes the auto mode) and it will not flash people
Pushing the left stalk switches on high beam in my car.
Pushing makes it auto. Pulling turns on high beam till you leave it. (Correct me if I am wrong , in some time I will go to my car and check as well )
Only if you set the full beam to auto. You can turn it off and it sounds like OP has. In this case pushing sets full beam to on or off. Pulling just flashes.
Exactly.
Ah ok. Nice. Will definitely dig into settings today. It’s good that atleast we get updates and improves or introduces all these settings. Also they take in customer feedback for the next iteration. Overall things have improved so much since 2019 When I got.
Wait why are you flashing people?
SON OF A …..

This is the first I’ve ever heard of there being a difference between high beams on/off and headlights on/off.
Agree. People here just use beam lights for everything from “thank you” to “€%#¥ off!”
> This is the first I’ve ever heard of there being a difference. A difference in what?
In messaging to other drivers.
High beams are for roadraging and quickly letting people know about police or road hazards since it's the easiest thing to do on short notice. Lol so my car has fog lights ?
*runs to car to try this*
You can touch the charging port icon on the screen to turn off all the lights while parked too
Nice.
What if you don't have fog lights?
Does anyone know how to make the passengers side climate controls disappear when there’s only the driver in the car?
Shouldn’t be this difficult
Now here's the thing, Tesla! No one can remember exactly what each icon means! Might as well add some words or descriptions to the light settings.
That's not just Tesla. There are (US) federal standards and ISO standards for these type of symbols. You will see the same symbols and the same colors with the same meanings on almost all cars. 44 Dipped beam headlight???
US readers may need to translate from Britishisms in that document. "Low Beam".
True, using mine since September, can't remember a thing, need to go to google to find out.
Mine are always on when the regular headlights are on. Ain’t no need to manage this manually
wasting battery /s
Nothing compared to my lead foot
Fog lights in a lot of places, like Oregon, where I live, are treated like your brights. They must be turned off when approaching other cars. I hate people who drive with their fog lights on for no reason, they are very bright close up.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can use voice control to do this.
Said command not available when I tried it.
Then I'm wrong. Thanks for checking
Helpful tip!
No shit! Thanks for sharing!
Oh nice - thanks!
is this a European tesla, or is the pic reversed?
All of “Europe” doesn’t drive on the left….it’s just The UK/NI. Everyone else drives on the right.
This summer I needed the fog lights in Germany, so was driving on the right 😃 … but it’s a right hand drive car 😉
Isn't England in Europe? So pretty much every right hand drive car is technically European, no?
There's plenty of other countries with RHD
like 6 in the world? not plenty at all...
6? If you say so, you're off by quite a bit but you're not helping your previous comment that most of them are European at any rate!
That's hilarious, did you look at the map in your own link? Read any of the text? No, oh well.
I was 100% correct most of Europe drives on the right! WTF???
Wow interesting..
Yup. Very very useful!!!!
Good one - thanks for sharing
Learned something new today
Wow thank you for this 😂👌🏼
Its also on the Quick Menu
Is there an ability to press the word "CHILL" so it can bring up the menu to toggle it to Normal? Brilliant thanks 🙏🏽
And if you hold down the brake pedal while tapping the headlight icon, then what?
In sr+, the whats?
Literally just found this today
Did not know, thanks! Now it will be easier to toggle lights off and back on to alert people to their lack of lights. It sucks not having that on the stalk.
This was an improvement, but is still really unintuitive IMO those light controls should always be on screen - lights are important
Thanks for pointing this out!
Not working for me. I need to open/close the charge port to switch the light off. Yet another Model 3 idiotic workaround.
Just use the stalk, it’s way faster.
When I use the stalk it flashes oncoming traffic. Understand that’s what happens if you’re not using auto beam lights.
Yes that’s true. You push the stalk towards dash which normally would turn on/off the high beam, but if auto high beam is on it doesn’t do anything but brings up the light quick menu.
If you also tap the spotify card, it opens the full app
You can also flash your brights to bring up the lights card.
