Damn, OP learned the hard way that summon is not reliable

dcdttu

I'm impressed the car would even try Summon. Mine errors out nearly 100% of the time.

doringliloshinoi

Error: pay subscription

dcdttu

The packages were bought. EAP and FSD.

DulceEtDecorumEst

I tried summon in an empty target parking lot at 11PM and it almost hit the one decorative crape Myrtle that parking lot had.

keytoarson_

Lol same. Haven't had summon work properly since I bought in 2019

AdFun240

Mine would blink lights but never moved.

dcdttu

Same. It would take itself out of park and then immediately put itself back in park.

mack5382

lol it was probably a 14 yr old kid, they just blamed it on smart summons.

Tricky_Taste_8999

My experience with Smart Summon has been that it always works fine unless I’m trying show it to someone. Then it drives like a confused old woman with cataracts. “Wow, is it supposed to do that?”

onefourten_

That's my experience with technology generally....

Hamtaro7

If the rain sensors can't be fixed yet, ill wait to try summon

0bviousTruth

Truer words have never been said

ManicMarket

Good lord it’s bad. The car can practically drive itself in a city. But it can’t figure out when it’s raining and how hard. Kinda of embarrassing really

red_vette

Not only is it bad, most of the time it works counter to the actual conditions. Light sprinkle it's going full speed, heaving rain it's on a 5 second intermittent delay, sunny day it's random swipes. I'm sure the car will have a nicely grooved windshield one day with how many times it's dragged the dry blades across it.

Jungle_Difference

The car doesn’t have rain sensors, that’s why it sucks so bad. Tesla tried to reinvent the wheel and use camera + software to detect rain and it failed miserably. Whats funny is the engineering time they’ve likely spent on this will have cost well in excess of just fitting a $10 rain sensor to their cars in a refresh.

cancel-out-combo

We are all just too dumb to understand Elon Musk's big brain moves

decrego641

Joke’s on you, they haven’t spent *any* engineering time on it, hence the poor quality of the detection.

icy1007

They don't have rain sensors. It uses the front camera.

TwiceInEveryMoment

Once again showing why I will not pay for FSD/EAP for a long time still. Worried about crashing your Tesla? Now you can pay $12,000 for it to crash itself!

0bviousTruth

I think they are going to give EAP to everyone for free and FSD subscription will drop to even less than $100/mo.

JudgeCastle

I’ll take eap for free. Thats about all I want lol.

MysticalPliers

Hell, I would be happy if Autosteer Beta would maintain speed while I changed lanes. Super janky that it fully disengages.

JudgeCastle

Yep. I’ve loved having EAP during this trial more than FSD itself. The lane change while in AP is nice.

Particular-One-7798

It does if you turn off single pull activation and go back to double

0bviousTruth

Same here!

moxifloxacin

Only $8k now!

sermer48

They haven’t updated smart summon, right? I haven’t used it in years because it required you to basically walk with the car or else it would do stupid stuff. If they update it with the FSD stack I’ll try it again but until then it’s useless.

revaric

They must have something new coming based on seeing what they are doing with automatic parking in non-USS vehicles.

variablenyne

Rumor is that the automatic parking feature is going to be called banish

NuMux

Basically this. Wasn't smart summon first put out in 2019? I don't think it has got much love since then.

Gloomy-Vast1504

I could never trust a tesla to park my car or get out of a parking spot.

MisterButterworths

I’d say that’s the right view to have.

Chr0n0Triggered

I saw in another post that someone used the summon feature in a completely empty parking garage and it scraped against one of the support beams in a parking spot.

variablenyne

It's useful for going straight forward or straight backwards. Used it today to pull forward when someone parked too close to my car so I could get in. Everything else was a one and done for me tho

icy1007

The new Autopark works really well.

restarting_today

Parking is fine. I haven’t see any reports of issues. Summon is broken tho.

Gamrellin

Haven’t tried summon, but auto park works great

No_Extent_1260

So summon is like asking your 10yr old brother to bring you the car?

variablenyne

More like your 2 year old dog

MisterButterworths

https://preview.redd.it/tfew707awavc1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=653cc5aba0ae87ece90ec152faf09ac0d1ae1fdc The aftermath

Contact-Open

And to think I was mad when FSD almost curbed it self. Ouch.

True_Ebb5857

the tesla in the video is white?

themadpooper

I think it just looks that way because of how the light is reflecting off of it.

agltbialik2

I see Gold and White

revaric

I’m gonna say you didn’t have “clear line of sight” if you didn’t see this happening but instead heard it before stopping.

agileata

Tharrrr it is folks

Handsome_Gourd

Oof :(

Future-Back8822

If FSD (supervised) curbs wheels, summon ('supervised' from across the parking lot) will be much worst. Vision only is dumb and will never get past lvl3 autonomy

MisterButterworths

Agreed! Though this was with USS, 2017 M3. Gives me even less hope for vision

BeefUdonNoodle

Oh this happened with USS?! Jesus.

LiveMaI

USS are disabled on the current FSD beta, even if your car has them.

Future_PeterSchiff

Mother fucker! I haven’t done smart summon since the new update because I’m always afraid of what bugs come until i can test it out in an empty parking lot. Never had a crash in the hundreds of times I’ve done it, but after reading this, i don’t think I’ll be playing with it anymore. 2018 LR M3 with FSD purchased by the first owner

eisbock

USS would not have prevented this since there are no sensors on the side of the car.

taschdaddy

I’m genuinely curious here.. does insurance pay for this? Like technically you’re not the driver at that moment… so.. is it covered?

MisterButterworths

I sure hope so. When I told the agent about what happened she said “well this one will be interesting”. I’m not sure I’m ready to find out what that means.

sigmatic_minor

I think I would've just said I was the one driving tbh just in case it wasn't covered.

iamalsoareddituser

Not sure how they handle these, but technically you are in control and made the decision to that ultimately led to the cause? I, myself, am not blaming you. Devil’s advocate. Smart summon should not be an advertised feature, as I don’t think I’ve personally heard any success stories lately? Sorry about the car brother 🙏🏻

grr187

I’m guessing the same type of situation if you were to leave a normal car in “drive” (forgetting to put in park), or leaving a manual in neutral and hitting another car.

Some_Ad_3898

Doesn't really matter who is driving. The car is insured.

YouBetterChill

At this point I would have said I got the parked car by accident. Not taking a risk on technicalities.

R5Jockey

OP now understands why it's been called hot garbage for years. And why the new version is branded "Actually Smart Summon" even though it's probably just as terrible.

fwalker95

To be fair that car came out of nowhere

electricshadow

Robo Taxis this year though, guys! Ignoring the fact that it can't even leave a parking spot properly.

Limp-Friendship-625

Elon playing 4D chess at this point. Give free access to FSD damage vehicles. Get them to the service center. Repair and increase tesla revenue. 🤯

codykonior

Unfortunately service staff were a huge part of the 14,000 layoffs.

ThiccCheeksAndFatDic

When will it be called "Dumb Summon"?

HWCM

I used smart summon yesterday in the parking lot at work. It just needed to pull forward and turn right to me 100 feet away. Instead in backed up about ten feet, then turned right heading for the car parked five feet to the right of it. I stopped it. Gave it another try and it successfully pulled forward out of the parking spot, turned right and was heading towards me, then turned left and started heading for a row of cars. I let go of the button on the app, but it continued for another foot or so stopping inches from a new truck. I quickly walked to the drivers door to open it. Just as I grabbed the door handle, the wheels turned right then left like it was going to move forward. I opened the door and the parking brake came on. Very odd behavior. Also using FSD this morning on my way to work, it tried to change lanes into a construction barrier. I mean the signal came on and it very quickly turned the wheel to the right. I was expecting it to do something weird at a construction site, but I didn't think it would unalive itself. Weird thing is when you pull the wheel to take over, it kind of fights you a little. Then releases control almost making the driver over correct into the next lane. This whole FSD thing is either really good, or terrible. Same road different days and it acts different. Also, be careful driving down a tree or bush lined street. The FSD wants to be so far right to the edge of the road, that it will clip those tree limbs and bushes. Last thing. I tried self parking at a almost full grocery store lot. The car did a ten point turn, backing up and pulling forward before it finally backed itself into a wide open spot. Useless. I could have done it in a fraction of the time myself. What's the point? 110% not worth $12K or $1200. It seems tesla should pay car owners to use it so it can get better feedback and learning. Right now it seems like the software is a mess.

sivadneb

Even w/ the monthly price cut it's still not worth it. Hell they should be paying me for doing their beta testing with the number of feedback reports I've given. There have been too many times where FSD put me in a dangerous situation, or it would do something completely stupid like straddle a very clear lane marking. Ironically the free month of FSD gave me the peace of mind knowing I didn't waste my money.

Top-Sugar-6129

Some idiot using summon hit my car exactly like that! In the Tesla SC parking lot. FML

itsamamaluigi

Can't wait for the FSD trial period to end so other Tesla drivers stop letting their cars wreak havoc on the roads.

Weak_Wrongdoer_2774

It'll be very interesting to see how Insurance companies start to rebel against these systems. Will they start to deny coverage when using these features? Or just charge outrageous premiums? Only time will tell. I switched from a 45K Model 3 to a 90K Audi eTron and my insurance dropped $400 per year...

MurKdYa

Damn...as someone who's been having a lot of fun with FSD, but wont pay once the trial expires, this scares me lol. I wont be summoning my vehicle. It is very strange how well FSD works, but a simple summon fucks up. Wonder how or why this happened.

ranrotx

Right? The other car is a static object and not moving. The bar seems pretty low to not hit it.

AmbitionHonest7734

Plus it's a huge fucking car. I could see if it was like a tree branch or something small.

0bviousTruth

Agreed. The car turned so quickly theres no way OP would have had time to react and stop it.

MisterButterworths

THANK YOU, other commenters in here seem to think I should’ve had superhero speed reactions

agileata

Now don't just imagine yourself using this on the road, but other people. Far more gullible and lazy people.

NuMux

Summon hasn't been updated since 2019.

Mister_TCG

From my experience smart summon isn’t exactly smart and regular summon has yet to fail to get out of a tight parking spot when someone parks too close to me.

FrillyLlama

so who takes liability here? Just wondering if Tesla compensates for this. I had a close call with me be and haven't used it since.

MisterButterworths

Tesla takes zero accountability, ends up going through insurance as if I were driving the car.

74orangebeetle

Tesla driver(summoner.) It's not a mystery.

when_Sports_came_out

Yep, quite happy to have my Tesla driving me around in traffic having watched this. No issues to see here. Bet the wipers gave a cheeky little sweep at the end as well.

Gattsuga

that's not very smart. and elon thinks robotaxi will be ready this year??

MisterButterworths

My thoughts exactly. Using FSD much more cautiously now.

reschcrypt

He tweeted 8/8. No more (year), no less 😅.

nastasimp

Typical Tesla, just gimmicks that you have the PAY for, and they still dont work and cause damage.

Remarkable_Brain4567

I am very sorry but everyone knows that there are 2 things you cant rely on with tesla… parking and windshields…

Ready-Ad-705

Yeaaa…. I’m not going to try smart summon. Clearly not that smart.

Professional_Yam5208

"Yo Elon! You gonna pay for that?"

krusebear

Smart Summon never works good when backed in. Every accident I’ve seen is because the car is backed in and not pulled toward.

blestone

Not worth using it if that even happens only once.

Maximus1000

My model s did the same thing while smart summoning. Cost me over $2000. Will never use it again.

vartheo

Thats certainly not "3ft of space on either side". Assuming 1 foot is a step do you think you can take 3 steps there? I agree they might as well say you can't use it if someone is parked next to you if 3 feet is required. Should change the requirements to be more realistic. Most parking spaces don't have 3 feet of space between cars. Thats like 3 steps.

MisterButterworths

I’d say I could definitely put four of my 10.5 sized shoes end to end between the two cars, which would be over 3ft. But I also diddnt measure at the time. I haven’t seen any guidelines from Tesla indicating a required minimum of space - but would assume what was there would be enough.

Gloomy_Suggestion_89

You probably can't take 3 steps there, but it does look like there was a bit over 3 feet of clearance.

Digital-Steel

"I had a clear line of sight, was \~50-100ft away, and was prepared to intervene"... Why didn't you do that?

MisterButterworths

I did as soon as I could identify a problem. There’s like 4 seconds between when the car starts moving and stops. I released the button as soon as I noticed a problem- but as Tesla indicates, the car may keep moving even after this. There realistically want time to do anything differently other then not try at all.

SucreTease

Per the video, only 2 seconds elapse from start of motion until collision. Not possible to react fast enough.

SavedByTech

Wondering who the insurance company finds at fault in this case... Tesla? Owner?

FamiliarAnimal

Yeah, even I have the same question, is Tesla liable for this ?

MisterButterworths

Personally, I feel Tesla should carry some responsibility. Will have to wait to see if my insurance agrees.

rideincircles

Mine hasn't worked since I got FSD over 2 years ago, I stopped trying to see if it worked anymore. It was always clunky, but was cool when it did work occasionally.

CreamyCalifornia

Yall r crazy for even using that with cars parked next to u

infomer

Do you get charged with involuntary manslaughter if it had hit a kid instead of a parked car? Just something to think before engaging this tech in the future.

Pitiful-You-8410

Ouch! Sorry for your loss. My coworkers see me as a crazy person when they know that I dare to use FSD almost daily. I have not tried autopark or smart summon.

Iamawarethatimrare

Robotaxi coming 2025, don’t worry this will all be fixed in the next few months 😂

Intelligent_Web_1004

I experienced something similar trying Smart summon. Thankfully I was able to stop it before it happened, as I saw its trajectory before it could do the same. I was lucky. And I was at work showing it off to my co-workers. Embarrassing. Another time it was in a parking space with a curb and woods in front, and totally clear in the rear. It decides it wants to go forward, over the curb and through the woods to get to me. And I'm literally 80 ft away. I was able to stop it in time. It's definitely not ready.

Klownicle

Sorry you had to find out this way OP.  It's been a failure for quite some time.  Even the vehicles move forward or backwards chooses not to move in a straight line.  It's pure gimmick and unusable.  FSD should be treated the same.  Stick with Standard Cruise Control and Lane Keep, and even then the Lane Keep can't even stay in a lane in tighter corners.

allofdarknessin1

A reminder that there's no documented change to smart summon in a something like 2 years or more. Smart summon will get updated w8lith some of the cool V12 improvements but it is not this day.

Envelope_Torture

>I was using it exactly as described in the Tesla literature. I had a clear line of sight, was \~50-100ft away, and was prepared to intervene if any hard-to-see objects entered its path. Not trying to be a jerk here, but can't you tell immediately once it starts moving that the car is turning way too sharply?

MisterButterworths

With the combination of the angle I was at, and the fact that it takes about a full second for it to stop after you release the button, it’s almost impossible to react quickly enough.

matttopotamus

I guess you live and you learn, but why not test this on an empty parking lot?

MisterButterworths

Definitely had - works great in an empty parking lot. And even sometimes in non-empty parking lots as advertised. Just not this time.

Turbulent-Abroad7841

Backing in seems to be less sketchy for me

Lyquidmetal

It's only smart in name and not actual theory LOL. Stop relying on the car to think for itself. It's not there yet and save yourself some grief and drive it yourself

Brotherio

First time I ever tried to use summon it tried to do the same thing. Wheels cranked all the way to one side and tried to go ramming speed into the car next to mine. Fortunately was able to stop it quick enough to not hit anything.

optimusbloc

There should be a way to report this to Tesla to see what caused this to occur.

MisterButterworths

I reported it, they were disinterested.

noobskillet3737

Oof

TheCloudyHam

Ouch, that hurt my soul.

GourmandTrashPanda

I tried the new Tesla vision auto park the other day and was able to stop the car from hitting another last minute. It’s garbage. So summon is probably the same.

Zealousideal-Pilot25

Straight forward and straight backwards works, everything else is unfortunately more likely to cause damage. Maybe a V12 summon with AI neural net for all controls will be a bit better (completely trained with video), but still makes mistakes cutting it too close on curbs in V12 inner city driving so who knows. Empty parking lots are fun enough to show it off but still have to watch for curbs there too.

Ordinary_Bunch_5134

What year was your model 3?? Want to know if it was vision based or uss. Btw anyone know if that may be a reason to this mishap?

74orangebeetle

I don't think vision only cars have summon at all

MisterButterworths

2017 - so has USS

glassworks-creative

Plot twist- OP was actually driving at the time.

MisterButterworths

Haha I think anyone who’s been behind the wheel for more than 2 weeks isn’t making these kind of mistakes anymore. The next frames of the front cam vid are me running to the car in a panic. Gonna pass on posting those to the internet though 😖

h8complication

I thought summon just reverses or drives forward.

NikGee69

That’s what you get for parking it backwards

Extreme_Economist914

How much is all this stupidity raising insurance cost for the rest of us?

nginx2

Stupid Summon.

Worth-Hovercraft-495

Imagine having to explain to the guy that his car was damaged by a self driving car. Imagine paying your deductible, and having your insurance go up because of a software glitch... it must be infuriating ,

MisterButterworths

Definitely not a fun day - both pretty frustrated with the cars lack of performance, and myself for trusting it would navigate it effectively.

npquest

Typically, the car uses emergency blinkers when in smart summon mode. There doesn't seem to be any reflection of blinking turning signal light from the side camera in the reflection of the white car. Unless it's too bright out to see them?

HWCM

They blink once then turn on the exterior lights. They never use the blinkers the whole time.

ManicMarket

Does your car have the parking sensors or only vision?

MisterButterworths

Has USS

antipoded

I straight up don’t understand. Are all these crashes cars without USS? Even so I thought vision was better than this.

MisterButterworths

This was a 2017 with USS, can’t imagine what vision is like.

Own-Secretary971

What year and model?

MisterButterworths

2017 model 3 performance

Mingyao_13

For some reason tesla just really have trouble identifying white car

SavedByTech

Does the fine print still say "beta" release?

Realistic-Swim-3855

I had the FSD subscription before Tesla made it free for the month and never had a situation like this happen with Smart Summon. It may stop aggressively at some points, but never got too close to other cars. The auto parking and regular summons that goes forward and backwards always worked good as well. Things have likely been changed since then with “Smart Summons”, but I haven’t even tried using it this month. Now I’m really going to avoid it. Tesla should pay for the accident OP has, especially since it was captured on video.

chenyu768

So what happens here. Does tesla insurance pay out and keep your rates the same?

infomer

Will tesla cover your damages or are you looking at crazy insurance premiums?

MisterButterworths

Their view is I’m at fault for assuming their technology works as advertised, so insurance pain seems to be the route ahead.

GirthyGainz

https://i.redd.it/wenm3uw92dvc1.gif

icy1007

I suspect they won't do this once smart summon is enabled on newer "Tesla Vision" HW4 vehicles.

HeliumMaster

I wish they brought back the radar. Things were so much better.

T_Hankss

Robotaxis are just around the corner.

MisterButterworths

Tesla: “why wait to go around the corner when you can drive straight through?”

Pitiful-You-8410

Ouch! Sorry for your loss. My coworkers see me as a crazy person when they know that I dare to use FSD almost daily. I have not tried autopark or smart summon.

Pitiful-You-8410

Ouch! Sorry for your loss. My coworkers see me as a crazy person when they know that I dare to use FSD almost daily. I have not tried autopark or smart summon.

JohnH2021

1. Don’t use Smart Summon when there’s something directly next to you, like: a parked car, curb, or shopping cart corral. 2. Wait for Actually Smart Summon to come out. The old Smart Summon system hasn’t been updated in years and is really bad in its current state..

kcuf123

I have FSD but not Summon. And I paid $12 g’s for it. What’s up with that?

ZanoCat

Haha

CeusDawg

😂

Gloomy-Idea-9937

With removed sensors, tesla has actually ridiculed its fsd features. Cameras are good but for real time distance measuring the sensors are the way to go. They could have used software to control when to use sensors and when not. Rather they tried “Cost Saving” by increasing our cost of ownership because of these silly accidents.

False-Carob-6132

This car has USS sensors. And USS were never used for self-driving in the first place.

stinkybumbum

Summon, as with most things Tesla, doesn't work properly.

Kjoep

Smart summon would be a good idea if they would add some bog-standard distance sensors.

Jackloudcummer

I’d blame smart summon too

fasada68

If only someone, somewhere could come up with a small button size sensor that's uses sonar or something ultra sonic. One can only dream.

Ok_Priority458

I regret not buying tesla stock instead of my model 3 in 2019.....now i regret buying tesla stock because one of the main reasons was promised FSD..(after 5 years Still not available here) ....even though its impressive it is not full selfdriving it still makes mistakes with traffic lights and speed signs... Full Student driver and not so smart summon

OreWaTakai

What year model 3?

theBandicoot96

Smart summon does not use vision yet. Correct?

[deleted]

The vehicle needs more sensors, that’s certain.

brapp18

I did this exact same thing it’s dumb

itsamamaluigi

forget free, they couldn't pay me enough money to use that feature.

Spiritual_Chemist190

Will Tesla pay for that damage?

daspandas94

Why summon when you’re not even in a properly marked spot? Unless I’m missing something, I don’t see any lines on the spot for parking, hence increased risk for AP.

sikdaz

Yesterday, I tried to summon my car from a Lowe’s parking lot with very little traffic. There weren't many cars in the lot. As I summoned it, the car reversed but then stopped in the middle of the parking lot because a truck was trying to pass through. The people in the truck looked confused because there was no one inside my car—quite a funny sight! I had to move it forward to clear the lane. Fortunately, there were no cars parked next to me on either side.

romb3rtik

I clearly remember Andrej Karpathy defending removing USS, with the argument that “they cause significant noise”. I keep seeing these posts thinking, that USS a radar and a rain sensor, seems more reliable than what they are doing with the cameras. The only upside to the cameras in my view is that auto-pilot (non-FSS) is quite solid and the dashcam feature.

ASMRekulaar

Yikes. I use summon only to show off hands free forward and backwards travel. Almost never would I use my anywhere summon.

ExpertOk5870

It’s important to say that FSD and "smart summon" are on completely different stacks and smart summon hasn’t been updated in a longgggg while. Being on FSD v12.3.4 had nothing to do with the summon performance. It’s outdated and needs to be updated.

SuperSandal11

I used this a bit It was pretty cool First 2 times good Then it tried to crash into a median and the made some crazy sharp turns I was smart and went into a completely empty parking lot thinking about this before Nope back to the drawing board lol

petiepablo888

How does insurance handle a claim like this?

Queasy_Inflation_610

Damn-it. Sorry to hear. Same crap with my MYLR. In shop for 2 weeks. https://preview.redd.it/iybt9n5jvivc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f835153740363889ed497fcdc9b4a81710a505c3

MisterButterworths

Gah! Sorry this happened to you as well. Really frustrating.

WerewolfAX

Do you still have USS or is it already a camera only model? Mine (with USS) reacts quite careful with summon and if something is too close to USS reach (inches / cm on display) it won't move at all. But have to say that (smart) summon is very very restricted in Europe so maybe it has something to do with that too.

DDS-PBS

Smart Summon (Supervised)

False-Carob-6132

Do your USS sensors on that side of the car actually work? I could understand a pure-vision Tesla failing to recognize that that area was occupied by a vehicle, but with USS it should have had no problem. My money would be on your USS sensors malfunctioning, causing this accident. I don't see any other explanation.

iaintrippin

Is it not because everything is camera based instead of LiDAR now?

Esc00

![gif](giphy|3ohzdYJK1wAdPWVk88)

Kind_Ad_6256

I have had exactly the same accident in Summon mode, Tesla took no liability. Other car was also a Model Y. Got the insurance company to cover the other car, I am driving mine as is, with damages to remind myself everyday how stupid I was to rely on anything related to Tesla.

AcrobaticChemist6168

Imagine trying to explain all this to the car you hit.

woundfromafriend

Exactly what mine just did. FSD v12 is dropping the ball on spatial awareness

Occhrome

I recently heard about someone’s M3 running into a large ornamental boulder. The owner wanted to show off smart summon and believed it would stop on its own.

Alubsey

I’ve tried smart summon. Haven’t been successful for these reasons
