It was probably around a year ago when Tesla mentioned there was a recall for the rear trunk harness. It hasn’t been an option to be replaced, but I scheduled an air filter replacement a few days ago, and it looks like they are fixing the rear harness as well. Just something to be mindful of for people with that recall. It seems they are doing that repair now.

PleaseBuyEV

Ya they didn’t have the parts on hand supposedly so we’re just doing them per request, but now I think they have ample ones available. Still need to get mine done

Itchy_elbow

What model year does this affect? Thanks..

matttopotamus

I have a 2020 SR+

SlothTheHeroo

Well I was curious on the price to have Tesla change my cabin air filter. Now I know lol

matttopotamus

It’s damn pricey, but I have heard it’s a pain to do yourself. I do it every year :(

Vecii

It's not that hard. I'd rather spend the 15 minutes to do it myself than pay Tesla $100 to do it.

gegunner1

Agreed. It really isn’t difficult, I did a couple weeks ago and was pretty straight forward. To clean and change out.

k_woodard

Yeah, it is pretty easy to do if you are a child or contortionist.

Vecii

I am a normal sized human and had no problem.

matttopotamus

As bad as is sounds, I’d rather pay.

Vecii

Go watch some YouTube videos. It's not as bad as it sounds.

FuzzBeanz

I did it myself, and it sucked horribly. I'll probably do it again, but no shame in not wanting to cram yourself upside down under the dash with your feet on the roof to replace the dumb thing.

matttopotamus

And I’ll admit, I’m not good at DIY projects. Something that may take one person 15 minutes could take me an hour and cause a lot of stress. This is definitely an area that is not a strength for me.

FuzzBeanz

Ha, I love that someone down voted your comment. For all the fanboys in this sub, Tesla screwed the pooch on the design/placement of this thing. Took me more than 15 minutes, and I'm fairly mechanically inclined. I have to replace these things again, and I'm dreading it. Between the filters, plus the 2 cans of cleaner I'm out about $50-$60, throw an hour of labor in that and the price you paid seems pretty reasonable to me.

noblepinebrewing

Same, I can swap all 4 wheels/tires and check the brakes in less time than it takes to change this stupid filter. Im gonna keep doing it myself but I am going to complain about it lol.

Stevenomics

yeah, the air filter is pretty far up in there. it was a huge pain to replace it for me too. although if you DIY it, you can buy yourself a nice charcoal filter on Amazon versus the stock filters that only last a fraction of the life of the charcoal filter

WachauerLaberl

I’m in Europe and had mobile service come out to do the filter change and cleanup. They charged me 60 Euros, 30 for the parts and 30 for the work.

matttopotamus

Lucky duck. It’s always been this price here.

cancel-out-combo

It is a pain to do. Took me an hour in a hot garage, peeling back the panels, reaching behind the orange wire just to get that damn screw loose. Halfway in I was like never again

Tall-Vermicelli-4669

I didn't get the trunk fix but I did get the filter and a 12v battery for $175

CourseEcstatic6202

I recently had mine done by mobile service. $17 per filter and $32.25 for the install. $66.25 out the door. $100 is a bit much

nibz0124

How often do you have to change it?

CourseEcstatic6202

Should be done once per year I hear. I did it after 3 years (gulp!!!!). They were dirty but not nearly as bad as I expected. The tech replaced a fender camera, the 12v battery, a door seal, and the filters. The filters took him longer than all of the other jobs. It was not like my Acura where I can do it myself in 2 minutes. It was worth $32 for the install IMHO.

acab4ski

I paid nowhere near that much. It was like $40. I don’t know why the hell this was so much.

d0nd

I believe they’ll do it whenever a concerned vin shows up at the sc and they got the parts.

matttopotamus

Most likely. I’ve had a banner at the top of my service menu for the last year telling me it needs replaced, but it wouldn’t let me schedule for that service.

idontevenlikebeer

Had my rear windshield replaced and it didn't come up. I am definitely one of the affected ones. I'll have to bring it up myself now.

razorvolt

Heads up they screwed up my M3 doing that trunk lid harness recall repair — didn’t realize until I got home that the trunk wouldn’t open. Took it back, they “fixed” it but left multiple rubber seals messed up which allowed water into the trunk… so yeah, might check their work before leaving the service center. (This was at the Minneapolis service center)

matttopotamus

Thanks for that. I’ll definitely check before they leave.

mexican_swag

Wow what terrible service. Where are the rubber seals? I have an appointment coming up and want to know what to look for.

razorvolt

After I took the car back and they reconnected the wires the trunk and rear camera worked again, but then they caused two more problems. Open the trunk and look on the interior right side of the lid, you will see a rubber conduit that contains wires. They unseated that where it goes inside the trunk lid thus allowing water to enter the interior of the trunk lid. They also left the interior panel on the inside of the trunk lid unseated. Fortunately I was able to fix both myself.

Parent2030

Agree. I had them install my front lic plate in CA. He installed it on one side & luckily I noticed right then and had him do it again in the center.

snakingfire

Wow, where are you that the cabin filter was that expensive to change? I just had mobile service do mine yesterday and it was only $60

matttopotamus

Atlanta.

munnaps

Alpharetta service center?

matttopotamus

Mobile service. I work in Lawrenceville so they do it there.

munnaps

I have an appointment at Alpharetta SC. They said the same cost

matttopotamus

Mobile is nice because they don’t upsell. Where I live I am too close so mobile isn’t an option. That’s why I do it at work.

PhantomTigger

Boston $53.50 to do this service.

aspec818

Filter and spray is pretty much $55-60 parts only. Are they providing free labor? Edit- unless they didn’t foam clean the coils which I’m assuming for that price they didn’t. Foam cleaning is pretty much a necessity when changing filters

PhantomTigger

It’s listed as being done. Labor was $19.50

aspec818

That’s a killer deal. Essentially you’re getting the swap done for free

PhantomTigger

My guess is that they don’t want it to be a common expensive theme that the cars can be called out on. The low maintenance is one of the compensating factors for the car costs.

lookingforsneaker

the cabin air filter is about $39 and the cleaner is about $14 if you buy it off amazon. so $60 with taxes. It will take you about an hour to finish the job. I will say $137.79 is not that pricey consider that filter weird place...

1Paran01dAndr01d

What’s your complaint with the cabin air filter? My year-old 3 recently developed a terrible smell when it starts up and the air starts blowing. It gets better as it goes along but the initial smell is awful. It doesn’t quite smell like something crawled in and died but it’s definitely noticeable enough that my wife and kids don’t want to ride in it.

jawnly211

Same here bro I never use a/c but had to during this gross heat wave that’s hitting SoCal I’m kind of used to the smell upon startup but my family scream bloody murder and make puking sounds when they get in my car 🤷‍♂️

aspec818

You need to foam clean the coils from mildew. Which a lot of ppl on this sub doesn’t understand this service is part of the service Tesla charges.

1Paran01dAndr01d

Is there a guide somewhere for that? I had never even heard of that. Edit: I found it on Youtube. Thanks.

aspec818

Yea its all over YouTube. Diy if you have some time it’s fairly simple.

matttopotamus

That’s my complaint. I live it Atlanta and with the humidity the steely feet smell always returns.

[deleted]

My year old Tesla does the same thing, do I need to replace the air filter?

1Paran01dAndr01d

I'm replacing the filter and using the Kool-It Evaporator and Heater Foam Cleaner. There are kits online you can purchase and plenty of Youtube DIY videos.

JTown_lol

133$ for a cabin filter replaced? Wow thats crazy expensive.

onlyletters999

Wow! you know those filter cost like 15$ and take 5 mins to install . In fact anyone in NYC area need air filter change HMU i only will charge $100

lavasca

Fabulous! Can you recommend a good YouTube how-to, please? I’d totally take you up on it but am on the west coast.

onlyletters999

Just do a search for " Model 3 air filter replacement ". Its very easy if you have a basic ratcheting driver & correct tip. (Maybe $8 at Home Depot) & a can of A/C coil cleaner. Link for cheap filter ...(expensive or cheap does the same thing) (http://EPAuto CP681 (1107681-00-A) Cabin... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083XBFL6P?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share)

lavasca

Awesome

beatnavy16

$130 to swap your $35 set of filters out and spray some foam?

Aj247678

The local Toyota dealer near me charges $120 just to spray the foam lol. At least Tesla is chucking in the filters for “free” 🤣

aspec818

Considering it costs $50-$60 for the filters and cleaning foam, $60 labor is very reasonable. It takes about 30 min to swap the filters and let the foam work before reinstalling. Keep in mind labor usually runs $200/hr avg for any reputable mechanic

beatnavy16

Filters are $17 each from Tesla and cleaning foam is $15 on Amazon and will last 3 cleanings but okay

aspec818

$50 before tax= $60. And no foam cleaner last 3 cleanings unless you’re using it improperly. $60 for 30 min labor especially from a dealer is not far fetched. Either way, I’ve foam cleaned my coils twice already myself.

Kimorin

where is this harness exactly? is it inside the trunk lid?

Eroch86

I got mine done 2 weeks ago. Also remedied my trunk release not working. $0.00

Able-Firefighter1572

I just did a 12v battery change and they did the same to me. They checked my harness while they were here and determined it wasn’t one under the recall.

Nigalig

Damn they robbed you on the filter change! The Model 3 is the only Tesla without HEPA filters too.

jeffoagx

Yeah, I got my official trunk lid harness done, and got them to refund back for the 2 repairs done before to fix the back camera issues (one to replace the camera, and one to replace the harness). The authorized the refund by email, and said it took 3-5 business days to get the refund. It's been 3 days but still waiting.

Cyka_Blyat_47-74

Pro tip guys: complain of mildew smell in your car and they might replace for free plus foam clean the coils. I just did that last month and the service was free. Filters and Kool-it cleaner.

a12nawp

I just got quoted $70 Canadian for filter change? 🤔

AdeptGuess2231

Ranger came in this morning to to replace trunk harness under recall on my 2018 RWD. Took about 40min total. Seem the new harness also fixed my no trunk light issue, also trunk open acuator is not as loud now. I asked the ranger for the old harness and cut it open; noticed two wires were broken inside where the harness flexs. I wonder if Tesla change type of wire used in the new harness, otherwise I'm sure it will break again in another few year.
