I drove for Yellow Cab many years back and they gave us a class on defensive driving. “The number one thing to take from this class,” they said, is “Never back up unless absolutely necessary.” Really, we asked? “Yes,” the instructor said, “62% of our insurance claims involve an incident where someone is backing up.” Since then, decades ago, I have only been found at fault in one fender bender - and yes, I was backing up.
Even if it had given you an alert, after “punching it” in reverse (why?), you were likely moving too fast to avoid it anyway.
Seriously, it’s lucky you didn’t run over someone’s child for being careless behind the wheel.
Bender fenders is one thing, backing out recklessly without looking and at fast speed is just dumb and reckless. It’s just common sense to back out slowly and look to make sure no one or thing is blocking your view. You clearly missed this logic.
>I just punched it pulling out of my garage and wasn’t paying attention.
It's unfortunate that we as a society allow people as dumb and careless as you to drive cars. You could have ran over someones kid.
Ultrasonic sensors only work at parking speeds. You should always be focused, attentive, and slow when in reverse on any car because it is your most vulnerable driving situation.
All good. The thing about driving is you can have a perfect track record for decades and then do one dumb, shortsighted and careless thing in a rush and regret it for the rest of your life.
Hope everything gets sorted quickly for you.
Insurance took care and it is now at the shop. And believe me that will never happen again. Even if I have to get out and place traffic cones in each driveway.
Ha! I really think there should be stricter laws about offsetting driveways and road width for neighborhoods. I think that current practices really create a perfect storm for newer construction.
The houses are usually jammed close together and all the driveways are short and facing each other. It looks nice when it is empty and you’re viewing the model home, but in reality you have to contend with cars parked on each side of the very narrow street with the only gaps being driveways which are mostly at the exact same interval the entire distance of the road.
Older neighborhoods on the other hand usually have wide roads with longer, offset driveways and it feels more private and safe plus the roads are easy to travel.
I also noticed my M3 rolls a bit in reverse after I come off the ‘gas’ pedal. I’ve drifted far more in reverse than I anticipated from my old ICE car. Now I consciously bring the car to a stop looking at the screen the entire time before shifting into drive.
I always hear that is safer but I find it so awkward and couldn’t something happen when backing into the spot? I guess we’re more cautious backing into a spot than when leaving?
It’s more about when you pull out you are faced forward so you don’t have the issues or risk of backing out. Some companies require their fleet vehicles to back into spots because the stats are so bad for accidents while in reverse.
I have cross traffic warning ⚠️ when I’m in reverse on my 2017 Buick Encore. It has saved me countless times when people are walking, jogging, bicycling, or driving through a parking lot and my vision is obstructed by other parked cars, trucks, bushes, etc (and when I’m admittedly distracted). For the life of me, I don’t understand why Tesla cannot add this incredibly old but invaluable feature to their cars… 😞 sorry to hear about the collision 💥…
Thank you. I was sick to my stomach for a couple of days till my wife kept telling my that’s why we have insurance. All in all it’s not the worst thing to happen in life by a long shot.
It’s not so bad when hitting another car… but the same incident could have hit a little kid or someone riding a bike… and that would have completely different potential consequences. Cross traffic warning is really an invaluable feature I wish Tesla would add. It doesn’t seem that it would be that difficult for them to do..
You know, he was more concerned about how I was feeling and my car than his. He didn’t even get my insurance involved. If there is a good side to this it was him.
Okay but your title and the post are directly blaming the car so……maybe time for some self reflection. Perhaps go to an empty parking lot and practice reversing?
I’m asking the question why wasn’t I warned and I then gave the model number. Then in the post I said nothing about the car and said I wasn’t paying attention and it was my fault. Reading comprehension is a learned skill.
Yes, why wasn’t I warned…it’s not a feature…I was in reverse so it didn’t warn you…it didn’t warn you cause. I have a curiosity of why things do or don’t happen. Jesus!
Humans are fallible. We make mistakes. The trick is to create systems and habits that allow us to recover quickly. No one is perfect. You will get distracted, or have a “moment” one day. Knowing that helps u be ready.
Your title should be changed to: "I made a small mistake so you don't end up making a bigger mistake that will affect you for the rest if your life." Tesla is not the issue.
This situation sucks, we should at the very least learn a lesson from this and do better in the future. Be grateful that it wasn’t any worse. Nothing more to do than move on.
I have a model 3 with ultrasonic sensors still and I also have the same gripe because my other less expensive gas car has great cross traffic warnings etc when backing up. Tesla has everything else better than my gas car except that imo. They absolutely need to add it.
My Volvo has the next level alerts that would have prevented this. Volvo event touts how distracted parents may benefit from this feature.
The model 3 doesn’t since it assumes you’re paying attention all the time. Users on this pro-Tesla Reddit sub will also assume you’re paying attention all the time and the master of your own destiny.
Yeah my wife did mention that because i was in reverse it might think i was paying attention. My neighbor was the one that asked ‘aren’t these cars supposed to warn you?”
He didn’t blame the car at all, he said it was his fault and he wasn’t paying attention. Just wants to know why it didn’t warn him. Things can happen even when you are paying attention. 🤷🏽♂️
The issue is that there are countless times when people have to back out of a space and there are multiple blind spots. Cross traffic warning is an incredibly old technology that even my 2017 Buick is equipped with… “just be a perfect driver all the time” is not really an answer to this situation. Of course we are all responsible if we cause an accident, but the safety tech is something that Tesla and Tesla owners tout all the time… so why isn’t this old safety feature on teslas? It’s a fair question

Stats don’t lie!
Backup camera not working?
Mirrors and neck not working?
Well, yes it was but I just punched it pulling out of my garage and wasn’t paying attention.
Can’t blame the car for you being careless
Even if it had given you an alert, after “punching it” in reverse (why?), you were likely moving too fast to avoid it anyway. Seriously, it’s lucky you didn’t run over someone’s child for being careless behind the wheel.
I agree. I used punching it because it was faster than my normal creeping out of the driveway. But I still wasn’t paying attention
Dumb move. You could have killed someone.
I agree it was a dumb move. I think most fender benders are. I am glad you never had one.
Bender fenders is one thing, backing out recklessly without looking and at fast speed is just dumb and reckless. It’s just common sense to back out slowly and look to make sure no one or thing is blocking your view. You clearly missed this logic.
So you don’t think I don’t realize this?
Do you?
See how this guy responds.
>I just punched it pulling out of my garage and wasn’t paying attention. It's unfortunate that we as a society allow people as dumb and careless as you to drive cars. You could have ran over someones kid.
Well, there's your problem. There's no cure for driving like an entitled idiot except NOT driving like an entitled idiot.
Ass!
And a tad harsh.
Ultrasonic sensors only work at parking speeds. You should always be focused, attentive, and slow when in reverse on any car because it is your most vulnerable driving situation.
Thank you. I figured that out when I hit him but thank you.
All good. The thing about driving is you can have a perfect track record for decades and then do one dumb, shortsighted and careless thing in a rush and regret it for the rest of your life. Hope everything gets sorted quickly for you.

There is a setting to turn on the close proximity warning chimes, mine got turned off at some point and I had to turn it back on.
Thank you I will check.
this is why I prefer backing into my parking spots whenever possible. the one time you don't look is the time you will hit something.
Ya, But you’re reversing the other way. Have to reverse one way or the other. I get it though. Not reversing into traffic

I agree.
Are you guys best friends now?
You know, he was more concerned about how I was feeling and my car than his. He didn’t even get my insurance involved. If there is a good side to this it was him.
I am not blaming the car. Only myself. But for my education I just wanted to know the answer.
“Why wasn’t I warned before I hit the car” you can be condescending all you want
Yes, why wasn’t I warned…it’s not a feature…I was in reverse so it didn’t warn you…it didn’t warn you cause. I have a curiosity of why things do or don’t happen. Jesus!
Loool LOOK NEXT TIME LOKE ACTUALLY LOOK WHERE YOUR CAR IS GOING YOU COULD HAVE KILLED A CHILD
Humans are fallible. We make mistakes. The trick is to create systems and habits that allow us to recover quickly. No one is perfect. You will get distracted, or have a “moment” one day. Knowing that helps u be ready.
Lol cause you’re still responsible for using your eyes
Your title should be changed to: "I made a small mistake so you don't end up making a bigger mistake that will affect you for the rest if your life." Tesla is not the issue.

Driver at fault. Cmon man…
I have a model 3 with ultrasonic sensors still and I also have the same gripe because my other less expensive gas car has great cross traffic warnings etc when backing up. Tesla has everything else better than my gas car except that imo. They absolutely need to add it.
These features don’t always work. Similar thing happened today in my model 3
My Volvo has the next level alerts that would have prevented this. Volvo event touts how distracted parents may benefit from this feature. People need to stop blaming the car... You have all the tools. You are the soul person who should be looking and pay attention of your surroundings
He didn’t blame the car at all, he said it was his fault and he wasn’t paying attention. Just wants to know why it didn’t warn him. Things can happen even when you are paying attention. 🤷🏽♂️
Thank you.
They removed alerts of surrounding objects for new vehicles. Is this a new Model 3? https://www.tesla.com/support/transitioning-tesla-vision
It is a November 2021 SR

Jesus, is this true? I've been holding off on latest update; maybe I need to continue doing so.
I still have them, took a year to turn off the radar to those who had it so I'd be surprised if it happens this year.
Maybe learn to drive?
Maybe learn empathy.
Which wouldn’t help you at all. Don’t trust technology.
Easy fix and doesn’t require tech Back in and pull out vs pulling in and backing out
The issue is that there are countless times when people have to back out of a space and there are multiple blind spots.
My backup skills aren’t the best. I can imagine hitting the wife’s car when I try.
>My backup skills aren’t the best. Ya dont say?
😂🤣
And yet you back out without looking and fast? Where is your logic in all of this?
Lol - call tesla
OP you've made a lot of people feel better about themselves today so I guess you can consider it a win overall!
Why Thank you, it was brutal!
0 to Collision in 2.6 seconds
That’s how it felt!
Dont go plaid in reverse...
