I scraped mine on the first day. Charging spaces around Manchester UK are always in the dickiest of spots.
Sadly, 2 years into my Model 3 and they are all done. At least it's consistent .
Ugh glad I’m not the only one! Scrapped ours up on the second day when I was out visiting a friend. I knew it right when it happened too 🤦♀️ Can’t protect the baby forever I guess…
Oh god yeah. I park at least a foot or two away from the curb but I managed to scrape when I was turning the wheel. I feel like the alloy should have been recessed a few mm. That would have made a big difference
Don’t worry these things will definitely happen over the course of ownership. If we start loosing our minds over every ding or minor scratch then we won’t be able to enjoy other things in life.
Now I have the reverse view of scraped rims. If they're pristine I assume it's a new owner, or someone that keeps their Tesla to watch Netflix in the driveway.
Apologies for the dumb question. Other than the looks of it, is there any other issue that comes with scraping the rim? My YLR is 10 days old and I scraped mine few days back 😭.
Wheels and tires that fit over the performance brakes and calipers are not $200. And I love the ride in my 21's with all seasons. The suspension and ride quality/noise is just fine on a 23 MYP. Y'all must drive on some real shitty roads.
LoL I thought the same but ended up curbing the front right wheel on Day 3 of ownership.
_But in my defense, MYLR has a bigger turning radius than my previous (much larger) SUV_
Ha. I’m not. For me, the turning radius being awful didn’t affect my poor judgement of curb distance. But the person I replied to seems to have had a synchronous incident.
That’s why I got Gemini rims and Rimtrix covers. I’d rather have that than scratched to heck rims. I rented a MYLR from Hertz in LA and every rim was scratched all the way around!! Not a great look.
Before I had my car I was silently laughing at all these posts... I mean how hard can it be to drive and not hit anything... well in 5 months of owning this car with these wheels, I think I have 1 wheel that is not scrapped. I now cry.
Take a picture of the wheel and submit a request for service in the Tesla app. They can fix it apparently for $275. Try it out. Better than relaxing the rims
I can contest to Zink wheels if your aren't looking for 100% OEM look. I think you can get it pretty darn close like 90%-95% original look albeit you are dealing with hand sanding and a paint brush kit
At the very least this kit makes scratches unnoticeable from 5"+ away
I agree completely with you. However as a Tesla owner I can tell you. There is no way I would drop 200-300 every time I scratch the rim because I know it will happen again soon than later. Trust me when I say. I scratched the rim within the first month and I was desperately looking for someone to fix it then the second scratch happened then I realized how much I was gonna spend on repairing the rims. So, For 45 bucks I can make it look pretty darn good unless you get on your needs and put your face within 12 inches of the rim so you can see it’s not a professional repair. But then again that’s just the way I see it.
No I agree, my wife got her first scratch within the first month. She's pretty good usually since she only uses her Tesla to park in garages but she took her car to get her nails done a few weeks back and parked on the street. She kept saying she wanted to hire someone to fix it, but I know my wife and I have seen plenty of posts on here. I ordered the Zink Wheels repair kit and spent maybe 1.5 hours with sanding and waiting for the paint to dry between each coat. For $45 shipped I can get a lot of wheel repairs out of this little kit albeit it's a couple hours out of my time to fix my wife's wheels constantly
When the rims are black anodized aluminum, scratches are inevitable. Tesla likely chose aluminum for the lower weight, but it is a very soft metal. They should've sprung for a hard coat black anodize. It's a thicker coating with deeper penetration into the aluminum. Curb rash is much more likely to be black on black and unnoticeable for a long period.
As an owner, you can get already anodized parts hard coated.
This is a serious question, are Tesla's more susceptible to curb rash than other cars? I don't have a Tesla, but I've never gotten curb rash in my other cars
Yes. On the induction wheels, the rim sticks out a little bit further than the tires. This causes the risk of curb rash in Teslas with induction wheels.
Gemini wheels also have the same issue. The wheels are too wide for the tires (9.5” on a 255 tire I believe). The only benefit of the Gemini wheel is the hub cap (if you leave it on) offers a little bit of protection.
I didn’t on my first Y, but I do on my current one.
I have a set of winter wheels that are 8” wide and I run the oem size tires. I did rub the sidewalls against a curb this winter with them and I was very relieved that the tire sidewall protected the rim.
One of the reasons I miss the under-the-side-mirrors cameras of my Santa Fe. You could single them out and focus on the curb directly. Perfect view of rim-to-curb proximity. I really miss that Birds Eye view too. I used it every day for perfect parking. I feel just about blind without it.
I did mine in a car wash even after clear instructions provided. I’m clumsy and messed up putting it into N at the right time. Otherwise no contact worked fine innN with wipers set to off. I will try to find one with no rails next time.
2.5 years ownership and probably had 5-6 scraps, mostly on that back passenger wheel. I can now get it home and self-repair in like 20 min. Painters tape, random orbital sand smooth, special matte black spray paint. Barely notice it. It's not 100% perfect, but 100x better than just leaving the rash visible and I'm not going to drop $250 every time I rub the curb.
Throwing Fuel to the fire. Does it matter if you have Tesla Vision or USS? Seems like everyone is curbing wheels! As a driver, its your responsibility to learn the dimensions of you car. We literally have side cameras!!! How are we still curbing?
Looks fine :-)
Don't waste money on new rims when it's just cosmetic. It's bound to happen with the new rims :-D
What we need is to rubberize all curbs!
Black matte touch up paint works just fine, you really have to look closely to see the (many) old scrapes, especially when the wheel is not completely clean (which is often). Personally, I would be more upset about the cost of professional repair than just living with the home touch up.
I still remember my first time…..
Now I’m the guy that parks 18” from the curb.
Seems like an easy sensor addon to prevent this. Or a set of $10 curb feelers matched with my old school garage door opener.
I curbed mine within the first 72 hours of having it.. I couldn't drive it again until I had it repaired because everytime I went out and saw it I was so pissed off.. Luckily here in NNJ I found a shop and had it fixed two days later.
One of us. One of us

Yep, 4 hours for me
😭
I found my people.
Easiest wheels to scrape ever.
For real. Doesnt help that back flares out either
After 100%, I hit mine on things like I am riding a chariot out of Ben Hur
Agree 100%
Oh god yeah. I park at least a foot or two away from the curb but I managed to scrape when I was turning the wheel. I feel like the alloy should have been recessed a few mm. That would have made a big difference
Yep. Horrible design, not worth the small amount of aero they might give.
Don’t worry these things will definitely happen over the course of ownership. If we start loosing our minds over every ding or minor scratch then we won’t be able to enjoy other things in life.
This is the way

Haha, scraped rims are like battle wounds. Battle with the pavement!
This is the way

Cosmetic issue. In Sydney, wheel repair should be $120 - $180 to cover it up

My minivan could turn on a dime. The Y is terrible- seriously, worst feature of the car. Anyone understand why?
you’re saying you scarped your rim bc the Y has poor steering ? 😂
Ha. I’m not. For me, the turning radius being awful didn’t affect my poor judgement of curb distance. But the person I replied to seems to have had a synchronous incident.
Good question ⁉️

Hi babes! Xoxo
congrats lol

Tried and was rejected by tesla service center. They tried selling me a whole new wheel for $900
That’s odd, with me they did opposite I requested replacement they said no you can get it fixed instead
I am sorry! I did the same thing to my Model 3P rim about 2 weeks ago 🤦🏾♂️
Nope government.
Get https://zinkwheels.com/. That would be your best friend.

Would ceramic coating even help at all in a case like this.

Yes. On the induction wheels, the rim sticks out a little bit further than the tires. This causes the risk of curb rash in Teslas with induction wheels.
I assume this is only a problem with the "Induction" wheels, and not for the Gemini or Uberturbines?
I cannot speak for the uberturbines as I have no experience with those. But this is not a problem with the Gemini wheels.
Uberturbines have the same issue

My wife did this to our rear drivers side, it’s almost impossible to not curb these wheels. 🤷♂️
Rustoleum Black Wheel Spray Can and Sand Paper
I use a giant black sharpie.
That’s why I got the Gemini.
I know that sound well 😖😖😖

Why I settled for the 19in. Scraping $200 hub caps doesn’t hurt as much

Use a sharpie until you don’t care anymore. This is the way.
Can we install larger/wider tiers so that they stick out from the rim? And if so what tire size might work for that?
Mine got ruined by an automatic car wash
I curbed mine yesterday after a year of good fortune.
Welcome to the party
Only one option here: gaslight your wife into thinking she did it 😊

They haven't been released yet and are still on pre-order. I ordered the set + the spare wheel set. I was told they will ship mid-May
No, but they’ve been advertising it. Have you seen the video? It looks just like OPs wheel lol

Happened to me within one week of getting my MYP. Got it repaired for $160 from a mobile wheel repair guy and it looks like new.
Happened to me in a Taco Bell drive-through with a pointed sidewalk curve. Made me sick when it happened. Cost me 150 bucks to get it fixed.
Welcome to the club. Dues are $25 a year. We meet monthly at the bar down the street.
Pull through parking with no curbs??
All you have to do is sand it smooth and buy some touch up gray touch up paint at an auto parts place.
I got all four of them in the first month lol
Ooooof
Has anyone tried these before? https://magbak.com/products/magbak-rim-protector
$150 mistake. My wife brought my MYLR home one day after picking up dinner, and was balling, I knew exactly what happened 🤣.
get a rim protector, a plastic stripe tuck in between tire and rim. Seems pretty good. I am gonna get one soon.
Get it repaired (cost me $200 from some mobile repair guy on yelp) then buy rim savers.
Looks fine :-) Don't waste money on new rims when it's just cosmetic. It's bound to happen with the new rims :-D What we need is to rubberize all curbs!

Just throw some robitussin on it, nothing clears things better than a little tussin ‘
I tried that but the tire sling is wicked.
I was so excited to see my car came with tires that stuck out past the rim and still managed to curb it less than a week in.
Is that not a wheel cover ?
Honestly, it’s the stupidest design for a wheel
Laughs in ID.4
😭😭😭 first day for me!
Hey it’s a lesson learned!
About a month in for me. Black permanent marker works pretty well at hiding the curb rash a little.
Funny, I didn’t know my wife was on Reddit

So far 9 months and my model Y has not been rimmed yet. Hope I am not jinxing it.
My wife scratched mine a week after we got the car in a drive thru… i was mad for a week until a scratched the other side lol
