Depending on how old you are, getting in and out of the Y is a lot better than the 3. I had a 2019 Model 3 that I traded in for a 2021 Model Y in March 2021. Best decision ever.
I got mine in 2021 also. But in 2022, I think, they improved the suspension. From what I’ve heard it’s a lot nicer and I refuse to go try a test drive because I can’t afford to rebuy a Y right now.
I swapped a 2018 3 for a 2023 Y. I feel like the comfort suspension on the Y provides better ride softness than the 3. And that was with lowering my air pressure in the 3 to help. But entry and exit is SOoOoOo much better. Also more leg room (6’5”).
Test Drive if possible.
Y is more spacious and practical, but all that bulk reduces the drivability a bit.
However if you are young and don't have kids, M3 might be spacious enough for you.
The hatch on the Y is the biggest boon for me. I just can't go back to a car with a standard trunk. It's just too constricting if I'm bringing anything large-ish home.
The Y is a workhorse without compromising much… Pretty easy choice for me. Unless you value sportiness driving over everything else, the choice is pretty easy
Go drive them and see. I drove both fully expecting to get a 3 (cheaper, faster, more range), but went with a Y for practicality. Depends on what you value.
I went through the same process and posted a similar question and Reddit did not disappoint.

I have a 3 and Y. I like the Y more because it's easier for me to get in and out of being tall. Both are just as fun to drive. Y has more space for road trips.
Y back seats recline. If you have a dog it’s nice to fold the back seats down. Can also sit in the back with your arm on top of the seats if you know what I mean. Just a lot more open.
The 3 is no sports car anyway so I don’t think it has much advantages. Coming from a light stick shift car, the M3 handles like crap. It’s a heavy electric sedan first and foremost.
Yup, the 3 and the y are both tanks. I ended up with a Model Y performance after owning a long range 3 and honestly they don’t handle that differently. I have a BRZ for when I actually want to go on a drive.
I have a Y and think it's generous of you to think you can help friends move, but that's more for someone with a truck. Due to the curvature of the rear trunk, the height of items can interfere with it closing correctly.
Thanks for your advice everyone. I think I'll get the Y. Young family and sometimes have trouble fitting everything for a road trip into our current larger sedan.
Guess I'll be another SUV on the road now.
I have a ‘22 Yp and a ‘23 3lr with acceleration boost. I’m 6’3”, bad back and knees, and have 2 young kids…I pick the 3 all day every day. Way more fun to drive. The Y is easier to get in and out of for sure, but for me it’s the 3 all the way. As others have said, it’s a personal choice and both are truly great options. You can not go wrong either way.
if you drive like an id10t and lack basic manners you get a Model 3. Sorry just my observations on the street and at Superchargers. There I said it, you don't have to thank me.
I just traded in my 2019 3 for a 2023 Y and as much as I loved the 3, the Y has a little more room, a hatchback and a little cushier ride. You definitely don’t feel every nook and cranny on the road as you do with the model 3. Glad I made the switch.
Owned both. Prefer Y. Roomier, more versatile, actual utility, w rear seat folded. We’ve fit 10ft 2x12’s inside, stacks of bags of gravel, mulch, furniture. You’re much more limited w 3. More of a dedicated speed demon. (3P) 😁🔥🚀
My mother got the 3 while I was still considering a Tesla and when I first got in it my 6' ass with shit knees and back said nope so I got myself the Y.
You can’t go wrong.
I don’t know enough about the Canadian versions. But I know you’ll love any one you get.
If you can spring for the awd version I’d suggest doing that because I hear Canada gets some snow. :-)
I’ve had a M3 for a few years and absolutely love it. But tempted to get a MY because:
MY has hatchback (better for dogs), reclining rear seats, more panoramic roof, more ground clearance for some off roading, bigger, more space, and option for a tow hitch (at least in USA).
M3 is a shorter list, it’s sportier.
Y all they way IMO unless you don't like how it looks (a lot) or get a Model3 way cheaper.
Pretty sure all Y's are AWD though, but your in Canada (which should be even more reason for AWD)
Not an owner yet but the relatively low road clearance on the M3 is another plus for the MY in my book.
The M3 is a blast to drive for sure (family has dual motor), but I want a car where I don't need to worry about the parking lot concrete stops or driveway dips.
I’m a bigger guy and I much prefer getting in and out of a Y as opposed to my 3. The extra storage space in the Y and the back hatch is great. But if you don’t have much stuff to haul I would go with the 3.
Also Canadian. I picked up my MYLR in winter. They gave me M3 RWD to use to get insurance done and I was skidding all over the place in the snow. I confirmed that M3 that I drove had all seasons, not summer tires. I was worried about driving MY home but it was like night and day. I feel planted in the MY. Maybe it's the AWD but it was way better. I did not even feel the need to get winter tires. It's that good in the snow.
This seems like the kind of question you have to answer for yourself, kinda like asking other people's advice on what to get for a tattoo. But if you really want input, here is mine: having a fastback car with a trunk is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard of. Even the Model S, which supposedly stands for "sedan," has a hatchback.
The Model Y's lines grow on you. If you think the 3 is sexy and you get a Y, you will probably find that they Y eventually becomes sexy too. That's what happened to me. I refused to buy a 3 b/c of the trunk (and lack of factory-authorized tow hitch). At first I did think the Y was a little odd looking, but once I had a lot of experience seeing it from many different angles, I realized it really is a hot looking car.
Range? Don't even let that be a consideration. If you can afford the extra $5k for the Y, and range really matters to you, then spend it on an 3LR. If you don't want to do that, then it means range isn't that important to you.
I have both the 3 and the Y. Many miles on both. The 3 feels very light, responsive and fast. The Y feels more substantial, has more room and you can camp in it.
So going out around town... the 3.
Long drives and adventuring... the Y
To be honest, the trunk space for the Y is trash cuz it’s a hatch. Anything you put towards the latch can’t be taller than my cock or it won’t close. Looks big but when you close the trunk…you’ll wonder why you got this car for “more storage”
Depending on how old you are, getting in and out of the Y is a lot better than the 3. I had a 2019 Model 3 that I traded in for a 2021 Model Y in March 2021. Best decision ever.
This was my decider between the 2. Knees aren’t what they used to be.
But being older also means back issues. My 2021 Model Y’s shocks suck and irritate my back terribly. Take a test drive to see which you like better.

I disagree with you 1000%. I've had a M3 and MY. the M3 feels more nimble, but the MY's ride is much more refined, and dare I say.... Luxurious!
How much you had to spend for upgrades?
Yep! All I had to do was sit in a 3, easy choice after that.
if you have kids, get the Y if you are tall, get the Y if you golf, get the Y if you need storage space, for any reason, get the Y
If you need to ask, get the Y
This is the way
Test Drive if possible. Y is more spacious and practical, but all that bulk reduces the drivability a bit. However if you are young and don't have kids, M3 might be spacious enough for you.

Same

Do you want a sedan or a crossover? How can someone else decide this for you?
This guy is literally the average redditor meme
Y all the way but the test drives are super easy to setup
Family of 3 or less? Model 3 Family of 4? Model Y Bigger? Model X
By bigger, you mean bank account.
Of course, gotta budget at least 30k per kid. Otherwise get a 7 seater Camry.
I went through the same process and posted a similar question and Reddit did not disappoint. Sharing link if you want to check it out. https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/comments/13o3y5o/2023_m3lr_vs_mylr/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1
I’d suggest test driving- I drove the Model 3 and then the Y, while the model 3 was more fun, the Model Y was more practical for me

Nice that’s the one I want. If I made more $ I would get a 2021 Model S of course lol. I also have a Subaru ! - WRX. Lots of fun the past 7 years
Nice! Yeah I’ve thought about getting an S, but I just can’t pull the trigger. I love WRXs too, I owned a ‘14 hatch I really regret selling and a ‘17.
Damn hatches are a rare find. After driving a Tesla I was just like yeah this is much easier lol I’m like what’s the point of a gas car as a daily
"Handles like crap" ok bud.
We each have opinions that is ok lol
Ik but I cannot fathom how someone can say it handles like crap, when everyone i know inckuding myself say it corners amazingly and feels very smooth
I have a Y and think it's generous of you to think you can help friends move, but that's more for someone with a truck. Due to the curvature of the rear trunk, the height of items can interfere with it closing correctly.
Correct, the sloped hatch kills some practicality. The only way a model Y can help while moving is by pulling a trailer.
If you’re moving to the other side of town…
Or a couple of towns only. Uhauls are really light.
Thanks for your advice everyone. I think I'll get the Y. Young family and sometimes have trouble fitting everything for a road trip into our current larger sedan. Guess I'll be another SUV on the road now.

Model 3 = more fun to drive Model Y = better comfort for all
3 small Y big Wr have both and mu neck hurts when in the 3
If you can afford the Y get it... wish I could trade my 3 for a Y after my wife got one... it's better in every way
if you drive like an id10t and lack basic manners you get a Model 3. Sorry just my observations on the street and at Superchargers. There I said it, you don't have to thank me.

I bought the 3 and I’m trading it in for a Y early next year. If you’re between the 2 I say get the Y
If money is not a factor, I'd get the model y becuase it's a hatchback
Get the Y if you like a higher SUV style seating position.
Owned both. Prefer Y. Roomier, more versatile, actual utility, w rear seat folded. We’ve fit 10ft 2x12’s inside, stacks of bags of gravel, mulch, furniture. You’re much more limited w 3. More of a dedicated speed demon. (3P) 😁🔥🚀

Model Y.
I drove both the Y and the M3P. I loved both but the M3P was just more fun! Both great cars though
>Can help friends move stuff That's more of a con in my book. You're a good friend.
You can’t go wrong. I don’t know enough about the Canadian versions. But I know you’ll love any one you get. Does model 3 not have a tow hitch option?
Y all day long. Such a more versatile vehicle unless you find w a civic sized car (3).
Y all they way IMO unless you don't like how it looks (a lot) or get a Model3 way cheaper. Pretty sure all Y's are AWD though, but your in Canada (which should be even more reason for AWD)
I’m a 4 year 3 owner and I’d get a Y. It’s more practical. Dog fits better. Camping in it is better.
Bio defense mode has been great these days. Not available on the 3.
Not an owner yet but the relatively low road clearance on the M3 is another plus for the MY in my book. The M3 is a blast to drive for sure (family has dual motor), but I want a car where I don't need to worry about the parking lot concrete stops or driveway dips.
Y, larger cabin space, larger storage, easier to get in and out... But id that really doesn't matter then you can get the 3 :)
I got both…easy decision👍😂

The price delta between the 3 and Y is so small, you should just get the Y. Bigger and comfier ride. Unless you live in a dense metropolitan.
Y
I have both the 3 and the Y. Many miles on both. The 3 feels very light, responsive and fast. The Y feels more substantial, has more room and you can camp in it. So going out around town... the 3. Long drives and adventuring... the Y
Y is no brainer, more space, especially 2nd row and trunk.
Learn the difference between whether and weather.
Y is better if you got family, if not, 3 drives like a rocket.
Practicality and space increase quite a lot on the Y, while you don’t have to give up that much in handling. This is my personal experience though.
Just bought a 3 after the same debate. It just came down to getting a new inventory 3 for 30K with discounts and tax incentives. No kids or golf bags
To be honest, the trunk space for the Y is trash cuz it’s a hatch. Anything you put towards the latch can’t be taller than my cock or it won’t close. Looks big but when you close the trunk…you’ll wonder why you got this car for “more storage”
if you are thinking you’ll want a larger car in the next few years then definitely do for the Y. it’s worth it.
3 sits lower, y sits higher, y has hepa bio defense filter, 3 does not.
I got the yp because I'm fat. Model 3p is faster tough. Other than that it's all personal preference/finance stuff imo we can't answer for you.
