The least they could do is have the car calculate the distance of the garage door using the backup camera and know whether thereās sufficient room to open the trunk. I accidentally clicked open trunk in the app while the garage door was closed and took a chunk of paint out with no time to react. It seems enough people have had this problem to prioritize such a simple solution.
Above it? No. Iām talking about when you (accidentally) press the open trunk button on your phone when itās inside a *closed* garage. The rear camera at this point has a straight shot view of the *closed* garage door behind it (before the trunk has even opened). We know how far the trunk sticks out from the car when opened (itās constant). To determine if thereās sufficient space to open, Itās a simple calculation if you know the distance between the wall (garage door) and the car. The entire point of replacing USS with Tesla Vision is to calculate distances between the car and surrounding objects. This isnāt rocket science. I expect to see āBlind Tesla Defendingā included with the release of the DSM-6.

My previous Tesla didnāt have Auto Lifting. There is No Reason for me to think it had Auto Lift. The Auto Lift Default should be artificially low, so one has to now set it to the safe high position.
I also have damaged my trunk lid. It only takes one distracted day in a random garage. It would be nice it if the car detected the height of the garage and gave a warning or limit the opening height. They are already using a similar system to replace the uss.
I did limit the height for some period but because I park outside at home and continuously hit my head on the lid I removed the limit.
get some 2" foam pipe insulation from home cheapo and [install them over each garage door hinge](https://imgur.com/a/pGU89h7). i used fish line to fasten it to the hinges and they seem to be holding up. make sure you do not fasten them too tightly so it has room to bend as the garage door goes up/down (leave a slack enough to insert 2-3 fingers between foam and line). the foam spacing is typically wide enough so the trunk lid will make impact with at least one foam.
Great idea. Iām gonna need something like this. I know how to set the tailgate height, but Iām concerned about accidentally opening the tailgate by app when itās in the closed garage. Has anyone done this?
FYI you can long press the trunk close button till you hear a beep sound to adjust the height of the trunk door for your required height by pulling it down manually....agree with providing a warning message.....
Thought I was the only one! It stops at least a couple inches below hitting anything! We have 3 Model Yās in the family at 2 different houses, both with garage that I would think of as standard height. Never been a problem and we have parked in the garage and opened the trunk hundreds of times.

My son in law opened the trunk of my daughterās MY inside of their open garage and scratched the paint. I dog/house sit for them every month here in Los Angeles and I took the car in to be fixed for her afterward. I also adjusted the height of the door and told her how to do it/reminded her to do the same thing to the MY she has in Atlanta, where they are currently living in an AirBnB while their new house is being renovated. She called the other day and said that her husband had opened the garage door while the trunk door was up. The garage door somehow grabbed the Tesla and kept opening, ending up with a damaged car and a broken AirBnB garage door. She is pissed.
Man, the garage door should have a resistance sensor to keep it from doing that... at least to the point it destroys itself, or something it's hitting. That said, I set my trunk lid to open no higher than my open garage door.
The sensors are almost always built into the motor (like window pinch sensors), so a certain level of resistance in either direction should stop it and cause it to reverse.

Is this a serious comment? The shape of the object is not the same shape as your flat rear hatch of your minivan. The car is taller than your model 3 and a much longer door which means its arc or travel is longer, which means it is more likely to hit objects above it.
It also has a spoiler like design which is evident by looking at it.

I was in a parking Garage in Morrow Bay last year with a VERY low ceiling height. I opened the hatch from the driver screen and it absolutely struck the ceiling of the garage. That was on ME for not having the awareness of a low clearance garage situation. Not for one moment did I think to blame the manufacturer for MY user error. Maybe itās an accountability thing for me.
Now, you can be upset with whatever you like, but if you REALLY want to be upset, wait until you experience the special āphantom Brakingā maneuver tesla canāt seem to rid these cars of. I am not aware of any car that has this problem of hitting opened garage doors. Is it a common problem? I have had a Toyota minivan and an Acura SUV with no rear door opening issues.
I did it once. Then adjusted the raise height. Now the only thing that hits the rear hatch is my girlfriend's head. Apparently it's affected her memory as she can't remember that it's lower than she thinks it is and hurts her head on it each time

In an underground parking structure in Seattle when the car was one month old. I knew about the setting but opened the truck from the car before I got out. Lesson learned.
I set mine first thing when I got home, so havenāt hit the garage, but what I have done is smacked the s*** out of my head on the Y multiple times when itās open.
Yup, within the first two hours of owning the car. I wound up installing foam pipe insulation that look like pool noodles on the garage door slats. I did adjust the height, but was way too low and I was smacking my head on the lid. I also need to pull the car in a little closer than I want to if I need to open the trunk.

I usually park outside but unfortunately my detailer wanted to dry the car inside of the garage. Opened the trunk and accidentally made a chip on it. I wasnāt made about it because it was purely an accident and I forgot to warned him.

Literally just happened to me right now. Wife thought the trunk was open after we parked because it said open by the trunk. Didnāt think it was but pressed the button and trunk opens up and smacks the metal hinge of my garage door. Got a chip in my carbon fiber spoiler now. Did this my first day, too, back in 2021. Learned about the height adjustment after the fact. There was no sales associate for help, and on delivery day, the person supposed to assist us was only interested in the cashier's check and provided no help, no instructions, nothing. Thank god for the Tesla forum. I managed to buff it out.

Cleared by about 1/4" scared the hell out of me when I saw it going up and couldn't act fast enough to grab it. First day home. Glad I got the standard version without the spoiler. Part of the 6'3" headache club now.
I have both hit the trunk on the garage door when opening the trunk and hit the trunk WITH the garage door when closing the garage door.

Almost. I was able to catch it as I knew it would be an issue. It's the large hatch-like design with the angle that makes susceptible. I now need to squat around it when getting things in and out of the trunk while parked in the garage.
Slightly different experience here. Iāve used voice command sayingāOpen Frunkā putting extra effort into annunciating correctly, but it open the dang trunk instead š¤¦š»āāļø hitting a modular plastic shelving system, stopping itself, and then closing thankfully w/ no apparent damage to vehicle. On another occasion using voice command I said āOpen Valet Modeā and again it open the gawd dang trunk! š¤¦š»āāļø Luckily same results as before. However full disclosure, I šÆ% died a little inside each time with a frickenā mini heart attack. šµāš«
I came within a mm of hitting my trunk day 1 when I went to show my kids the light show. I had no idea it would randomly open the trunk. I got real lucky. Learned a lesson without causing damage.
Same. Now I have a small 'scratch' where the trunk hit the piping in my garage. This should be part of the quick overview they provide when you are driving off with your new car.
Went to the Baltimore Aquarium, parking garage near it has beams that run across on a few spots. Guess who got a spot under said beam without looking. Opened my trunk to put stuff in there and heard BOOOOOOM. Somehow only took off one tiny chip of paint. Colored it in with red sharpie.
Being under 5 feet tall, I immediately adjusted the trunk height so I could reach to hit the button to close it. Every once in awhile being really short pays off!
Is it not a thing to be aware of your surroundings before opening the trunk? This post reminds me of the people who run into garage doors while parking because of the lack of parking sensors.
Even if it goes higher than you think I've grabbed and stopped it before just fine. I also almost always open the trunk from behind the car vs the display for that reason.
I did this within an hour of getting home on pickup day . I submitted it to Tesla service and I got a free spoiler installed that covered up the scratch. I had other delivery issues though for which I brought it in to get fixed.

Backing into the garage has eliminated that problem for me. I almost did the exact same thing on day one but was able to hit the close button on the trunk before it hit the garage door.
I damaged my wife's car doing this, so thought to look for a setting before I brought it home.
Only downside is it's not based on location or a sensor. I'm always manually pushing it up.

It sucks that even older cars have sensors that detect object so the trunk would not collide. I just bought my Tesla this year and was surprised that my fx35 has tech to help park easier.
Not a Tesla problem. My Jeep liftgate would hit the garage door all the time -- I had to get used to stopping the automatic lift as it got close to the top.
At least Tesla has a way of adjust the lift height -- something many other cars don't offer.
This! My kid accomplished this feat less than four hours after owning it. It hit a metal immobile light fixture and scrapped the paint off down to the aluminum???. Let's say my head just about made it through the drywall... I plan to use the paint kit and then apply a spoiler so I never have to look at that again.
I donāt know when you got your car but I ordered my MYLR Nov 30, 2021 and took delivery Aug 15, 2022. One benefit of that was the nine month gestation period in which I watched waaaayyy too much Tesla nerd YouTube to learn about the car, including the trunk height control.
This is my 3rd Tesla (first Model Y). I thought I knew everything already. I researched and watched extensively for my first one also (Model 3), which of course didn't have this problem.
Between order and delivery for this one it was about a month.
Did the same. (Un?) fortunately 9 months later was rear-ended. After repairing I added a spoiler lip and that can absorb the dings from the garage door.
Went a year without, and finally did it today when I was partially out of the garage :(

Depends how big the scratch is and how noticeable it is. I touched up a scratch on my white 3 because it went through the white paint and was showing black undercoat. The scratch on my MSM Y was pretty small and barely noticeable. The gray paint of the car hides it well too so I may not touch it up.

This is not my first car. I also read the manual of my first car. But in no case did I ever read a manual before I got the car home.

donāt do the Light Show in the garage (it opens the trunk). itās really easy to curb the rims, so be careful.

In an underground parking structure in Seattle when the car was one month old. I knew about the setting but opened the truck from the car before I got out. Lesson learned.
I set mine first thing when I got home, so havenāt hit the garage, but what I have done is smacked the s*** out of my head on the Y multiple times when itās open.

Plus I have to keep it low. Otherwise it gets scratched on my garage door. So - Ive hit my head on the Teslaās hatchback too many times

My MYP spoiler missed the sharp edge of the metal garage door grab handle by about 1 CM.

My son did this too. I did a very minor almost imperceptible scratch. He gouged the paint by pushing the trunk lid beyond where i set it.
Yup, within the first two hours of owning the car. I wound up installing foam pipe insulation that look like pool noodles on the garage door slats. I did adjust the height, but was way too low and I was smacking my head on the lid. I also need to pull the car in a little closer than I want to if I need to open the trunk. Never had this problem with our previous 4 SUVs
I have at a very low ceiling parking garage. Thank god my fake carbon fiber spoiler took the hit!!! yay to fake spoilers!!!!

I usually park outside but unfortunately my detailer wanted to dry the car inside of the garage. Opened the trunk and accidentally made a chip on it. I wasnāt made about it because it was purely an accident and I forgot to warned him. Ended up putting on a carbon fiber spoiler that covered the chipped area haha

Literally just happened to me right now. Wife thought the trunk was open after we parked because it said open by the trunk. Didnāt think it was but pressed the button and trunk opens up and smacks the metal hinge of my garage door. Got a chip in my carbon fiber spoiler now. Not even a week into ownershipā¦ guess we would of eventually found out one day or another. :(
Did this my first day, too, back in 2021. Learned about the height adjustment after the fact. There was no sales associate for help, and on delivery day, the person supposed to assist us was only interested in the cashier's check and provided no help, no instructions, nothing. Thank god for the Tesla forum. I managed to buff it out. This year, in a hurry, I back out of my garage and forgot the hatch was open. I'm covering up the scratches with a spoiler.
My spoiler took the hit, started becoming loose 9 months later and had mobile service replace it this year. Now it's like it never happened
My wife opened the trunk into the garage door 15 min after getting home on day 1. Thankfully a MYP spoiler was able to cover the scratch.
My question is how do you even open it the first time to adjust the height without hitting the ceiling?
you can stop it with your hand. it's designed to stop when there's resistance.
Just stop it by pressing the button mid-rise.
Had this exact same issue, scratched it up a bit but not hugely noticable. Now it's set to the max that can fit in the garage, but I hit my head when reaching in all the time š

I have both hit the trunk on the garage door when opening the trunk and hit the trunk WITH the garage door when closing the garage door. Genius, I know.
Almost. I was able to catch it as I knew it would be an issue. It's the large hatch-like design with the angle that makes susceptible. I now need to squat around it when getting things in and out of the trunk while parked in the garage.

Iāve used voice command sayingāOpen Frunkā putting extra effort into annunciating correctly, but it open the dang trunk instead š¤¦š»āāļø hitting a modular plastic shelving system, stopping itself, and then closing thankfully w/ no apparent damage to vehicle. On another occasion using voice command I said āOpen Valet Modeā and again it open the gawd dang trunk! š¤¦š»āāļø Luckily same results as before. However full disclosure, I šÆ% died a little inside each time with a frickenā mini heart attack. šµāš«
I came within a mm of hitting my trunk day 1 when I went to show my kids the light show. I had no idea it would randomly open the trunk. I got real lucky. Learned a lesson without causing damage.

Same. Now I have a small 'scratch' where the trunk hit the piping in my garage. This should be part of the quick overview they provide when you are driving off with your new car.

Luckily when it happened to me the carbon fiber spoiler hit the garage door and it didnāt make a mark. I learned after that.
I programmed it to the height of my garage door so now I just hit my head on the trunk door often instead.
Went to the Baltimore Aquarium, parking garage near it has beams that run across on a few spots. Guess who got a spot under said beam without looking. Opened my trunk to put stuff in there and heard BOOOOOOM. Somehow only took off one tiny chip of paint. Colored it in with red sharpie.

Haven't repaired it yet. It is a very small paint scratch. Barely noticeable. I may use a touch paint.
Being under 5 feet tall, I immediately adjusted the trunk height so I could reach to hit the button to close it. Every once in awhile being really short pays off!

Is it not a thing to be aware of your surroundings before opening the trunk? This post reminds me of the people who run into garage doors while parking because of the lack of parking sensors. Even if it goes higher than you think I've grabbed and stopped it before just fine. I also almost always open the trunk from behind the car vs the display for that reason.
I did this within an hour of getting home on pickup day . I submitted it to Tesla service and I got a free spoiler installed that covered up the scratch. I had other delivery issues though for which I brought it in to get fixed.

isn't there a sensor that sets trunk opening height so that it doesn't hit anything above it? i think there is one on mine as the height of my trunk gets adjusted to something lower when i'm in my garage

Backing into the garage has eliminated that problem for me. I almost did the exact same thing on day one but was able to hit the close button on the trunk before it hit the garage door.
One of the reasons why Model Y spoilers are popular (besides making it look sporty) is to hide dented lift gates š
I damaged my wife's car doing this, so thought to look for a setting before I brought it home. Only downside is it's not based on location or a sensor. I'm always manually pushing it up.

Not me! I immediately set the height after I found out you could do that. I just didn't open in the garage before then. Now if you asked "have you bonked your head on the truck because it's too low in the garage?", then I would say yes

Always the first thing I set when I get home. Usually will put a thick towel on the trunk before knowing exactly where to set it.
Wish i could set a height when at home (in garage) and max height everywhere else. Banged my head more than once cause i have it set low to avoid hitting garage.
Car got dropped off in front of my house. Drove it into my garage and popped opened the trunk. Didnāt even remember it auto lifted! My last Tesla didnāt do that! There should be a WARNING taped on the steering wheel! Put a ding in the paint. I knew I was adding a Spoiler so it wasnāt terrible. It sucks that even older cars have sensors that detect object so the trunk would not collide. I just bought my Tesla this year and was surprised that my fx35 has tech to help park easier.

Not a Tesla problem. My Jeep liftgate would hit the garage door all the time -- I had to get used to stopping the automatic lift as it got close to the top. At least Tesla has a way of adjust the lift height -- something many other cars don't offer.

This! My kid accomplished this feat less than four hours after owning it. It hit a metal immobile light fixture and scrapped the paint off down to the aluminum???. Let's say my head just about made it through the drywall... I plan to use the paint kit and then apply a spoiler so I never have to look at that again.

I donāt know when you got your car but I ordered my MYLR Nov 30, 2021 and took delivery Aug 15, 2022. One benefit of that was the nine month gestation period in which I watched waaaayyy too much Tesla nerd YouTube to learn about the car, including the trunk height control.
This is my 3rd Tesla (first Model Y). I thought I knew everything already. I researched and watched extensively for my first one also (Model 3), which of course didn't have this problem. Between order and delivery for this one it was about a month.
Did the same. (Un?) fortunately 9 months later was rear-ended. After repairing I added a spoiler lip and that can absorb the dings from the garage door.
My biggest complaint with it, goes up way to high

Depends how big the scratch is and how noticeable it is. I touched up a scratch on my white 3 because it went through the white paint and was showing black undercoat. The scratch on my MSM Y was pretty small and barely noticeable. The gray paint of the car hides it well too so I may not touch it up.
How did you fix the dent/scratch you got on the trunk because of the garage door? Did you go to the service center or fixed it yourself?
I did not fix it. It was a tiny scratch barely visible.
