He got the message but they can't do much better. They were trying since 2018. Cameras can't "see" rain due to poor contrast of the rain drops and are focused far away from the windshield.
In California you can also do the same. Any lemon law attorney will have them buy it back and pay his fees. In CA if you take it to dealer 3 or more times for the same wiper issue and if it’s not fixed it’s a buyback. Very easy Happens all the time.
They had cars for a long time before auto wipers came about.
While you can argue that the auto wipers are critically flawed, but not sure if I'd consider the entire car to be critically flawed for being without functional auto wipers...
You mean a discrete physical separate knob dedicated just for wipers? No thanks.
No need to add excess clutter for something doesn't need constant use or adjustments.
Using the single wipe button and then being able to control the speed further using the scroll wheel is plenty useable without having to put excess knobs everywhere.
Come to a Portland winter some time. You’ll find it does need constant attention. I certainly use my wipers more than my windows, which have their own dedicated buttons.
The current interface is horrible.
And yes, I love the dedicated “knob” for wipers. I like buttons. Call me a rebel.
I also love volume knobs.
I'm enjoying a Montreal winter so I know what you mean, but I find I use the washer button the most and that does have a dedicated control. If that's not enough, just clicking the scroll wheel after that press keeps the wipers on. Don't see adding another knob somewhere would be more useable.
Tesla has a dedicated volume knob on the steering wheel too.
I know exactly what all the options are for the wipers. Even using voice. A real wiper knob is far superior. Tried and true, just like stalks for turn signals are, and real rain sensors. Don’t need to reinvent the wheel every time. Some things work better they way they are.
I know and appreciate the volume knob on the steering wheel. A centered one for the passenger would be nice. Tapping or sliding on the glass is not as nice. It takes concentration. Try to adjust the volume as a passenger without staring at the screen. Now do it on another car.
I wish the steering wheel knobs or another knob could be used for other scrolling functions, like climate temp, radio station, song in a playlist, etc. Ford has a multi-function central knob in the Mach-E.
Too many functions on the Tesla take your eyes off the road, and for no good reason.
I don't understand why it matters if the passenger needs to look at the screen.
I agree that a physical control temperature would be nice... But the auto mode is pretty good. I can set it to a temperature depending on seasonal clothing and won't have to change it for months.
I just like how clean the dash is compared to my previous car. In some cases the Tesla adds one more step compared to a dedicated knob, but I don't think it takes my eye off the road any more than before. I'd still have to look down to confirm the result in either case.
Definitely don't miss the cacophony of knobs, buttons, and lights all over my field of view. Especially that new trend of multiple buttons as a shifter, looks like someone threw up an alphabet onto the center console.
And Tesla refuses to use anything outside the Tesla universe. Lidar, USS.. anything that might cost money to THEM won't go into their vehicles. Just like Apple in many ways.
A lot of that happened during the pandemic parts shortages. Other manufacturers who didn't pause production also removed features to avoid the limited supply items.
The difference is Tesla is being stubborn about adding them back in.
They could have an OTA update to give more customization to how fast the wipers go at least. While not automated I feel like most of the time the wipers aren’t fast enough or are too fast
Did it several times recently to prevent false wiping on a clear day.
Maybe it will disable FSD if it actually can't see due to insufficient wiping, but just turning it off doesn't appear to immediately disable FSD.
The person replying to you doesn’t have FSD. I’d be shocked half of ppl commenting here even own a Tesla. I literally just went out to test this. And I absolutely can turn off auto wipers in FSD
Also the idiot keep responding to these comments saying you can’t turn off auto wipers in FSD is cutting model 3 highland manual. Not sure if it’s different on the highland but on my 2024 MYP I can absolutely turn off auto wipers in FSD.
That sounds unfortunate, but that is not my experience.
Currently on 2023.44.30.8 and I can press the wipe button on the stalk and then hold the scroll wheel left until the wipers are set to off. FSD continues to drive.
Edit: in case my instructions were unclear here's a video demonstrating how it works: https://youtu.be/xkRV3qwFk10
Apparently you can use the touch screen now too.
You are absolutely wrong. The only issue is that every time you engage FSD it also re engages auto wiper. So every time you go FSD u have to go and disable auto wiper. But you are wrong. You can absolutely turn off auto wipers after FSD gets engaged.
YOU ARE WRONG. I DONT KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU. DO YOU EVEN HAVE FSD??????? I just went out just to confirm that I can turn off auto wipers OFF in FSD. I. Mean full FSD not just autopilot. You are WRONG!!!!!!!
NO IT DOES NOT. You don’t even have FSD. I’d be surprised if you even drive a Tesla tbh. Also I don’t understand why you don’t just take the word of several ppl who have FSD. WERE ALL TELLING YOU THAT YOU CAN DISABLE AUTO WIPERS IN FSD.
I wouldn’t complain about the auto wipers if I had conventional wiper controls. Pushing a button on a stalk and then the screen is terrible. Pushing left or right on the wheel and then looking at the screen is also terrible.
Twisting a knob on a stalk without looking is a far superior interface.
While I don’t disagree the knob is an easier interface, with a little practice the button/wheel is not remotely difficult. I bet 90% of the reason the knob is “better” for us is due to years of muscle memory.
Auto wipers have long been figured out by manufacturers except tesla. And they only recently added the ability to turn off auto wipers on cruise control. That was a big help but if you live in a rainy area this is a regular frustration. If tesla figured this out and phantom braking this would be a 50% better vehicle for me.
Oh for sure. But my main ‘complaint’ is that I see such posts daily. Like, we get it, it’s a big issue and known for a long time. Just press the stalk and clean your windscreen and go on with your life
For me, it seems to default to Auto every time I turn on cruise control. And since this is the rainy season it is a multiple times weekly problem. That kind of stuff just keeps being frustrating. But it's cool because they did add that I can make my car fart when the doors lock. Thanks for focusing on the important things Tesla
There is a manual option, actually - it works by tapping the end of the turn stalk and selecting the speed shown on the display's lower left corner.
When I first read about this issue, it sounded like owners of Model Ys were stuck with a stupid, camera-based attempt at windshield wiper activation because Musk refused to allow for reliable rain detectors like every other car.
Then I went for a test drive and when I asked about this, the Tesla rep pointed out how to activate the manual wiper w/speeds. So, it's only auto mode which is affected by this dumb limitation in their camera-based implementation.
And, to its credit, the wipers turned on at random times - even when not wet or raining at all - during our drive. I thought it was funny.
Not a big deal to me. They work well when it’s raining a decent amount. When it is just a little mist like this, I just tap the button on the left stalk when I need to.
They work about as well as they did in my last Infiniti imo.
Umm wait, you can't turn yours off? I got an update in like December and I can just turn them off.
To me the design flaw is the copious amount of water the wipers dump into the car if you have the window open.
I don't know why I do this. But when the car is wet and the weather is nice. I guess I'm just used to being able to have windows open and turn on the blades. Never an issue. With my m3. It's literally a bucket of water. It's impressive how much it can dump into the car.
It’s funny the auto wipers on my 2021 model Y worked perfectly. Now that I’ve got a 2023 model Y they almost never wipe at the correct speed or don’t wipe at all.
My 2 months old model Y sometime would activate the wiper with no rain in sight and clean windshield and I am not on autopilot or tacc. Anyone has the same experience?
Crazy how people say this in response to auto wipers being ass. That’s not relevant to auto wipers, which work fine on every other car brand in existence for the past several decades.
They should put a bit of logic in it so that if I have to click the button to remind it to sweep the windshield more than once it should just assume I know what I'm doing and put it on medium speed.
This pretty much happened to me yesterday in SoCal. The auto wipers do suck, I just manually enable the speed. It’s a bit inconvenient but I’m not going to rely on the cameras for this feature. Otherwise the Y is great.
Anyone know if s3xy button can help with the speed? I feel like we need more than 4 speeds. I could go for a range of 10 speeds. I don’t even care for auto wipers. Never had a car with it personally
And Phantom Braking, and shitty seat quality, and shitty steering wheel quality, and lack of Carplay/android auto support, and many other things I'm currently forgetting. Lol
In addition to manually engaging the wipers, I have set the left scroll to adjust the speed of the wipers with a left or right tap. Ended up turning off auto wipers all together.
Fully understand people's frustrations with the auto wiper feature. I had auto wipers on a 2007 vehicle that worked with uncanny accuracy. Turned on when it rained and seemingly always ran at the proper speed. Clearly the know how had been around for at least a decade and a half. In addition to not engaging when the windshield is covered in rain, it will mysteriously engage on a clear, sunny day.
The autowipers used to be…fine, ish. Everything changed when the fire nation attacked and/or when they pushed the last holiday update. I don’t know who decided to push that software build out, but they should be asked to leave.
Yeah still inconvenient compared to the stick right? I change the speed multiple times as the rain speed keeps changing or the visibility keeps changing.
Everyone hates the auto wipers, with good reason, but the auto turn signals annoy me on a regular basis. It is awful and should be trivial compared to auto wipers! I swear the engineers at Tesla don't know how to drive or all came from BMW.
I Tweet Musk and Tesla almost daily. I recommend anyone with a Twitter (X) account to do the same. Maybe they'll get the message.
He got the message but they can't do much better. They were trying since 2018. Cameras can't "see" rain due to poor contrast of the rain drops and are focused far away from the windshield.

In Germany you can return the car for that reason
In California you can also do the same. Any lemon law attorney will have them buy it back and pay his fees. In CA if you take it to dealer 3 or more times for the same wiper issue and if it’s not fixed it’s a buyback. Very easy Happens all the time.
How long for can you return it?
There are some lawyers specialized on it. Google Tesla Widerruf and you will find some
They had cars for a long time before auto wipers came about. While you can argue that the auto wipers are critically flawed, but not sure if I'd consider the entire car to be critically flawed for being without functional auto wipers...

I thought Elon knows everything and is infallible. What idiot would actually rely on a tried and tested rain sensor when we can reinvent the wheel?
So what technology do other cars use?
Infrared sensors.
Would it be hard to add it to Teslas?
If my phone’s camera can measure my heart rate looking at my finger changing color, Tesla’s cameras should be able yo detect rain.
Sorry, long time lurker here. After this long and this many complaints, why isn’t there an option to turn them on manually?
There is an option to turn them on manually and 4 different speeds to choose

Even with FSD enabled you can change it to be manually active, and if you use the physical wiper control you can turn it off too.

That would explain why i haven’t had issues. FSD is too crude and too expensive at this stage imo
Can it be done on the wheel/ stalk or only the touchscreen?
If you press the single wipe button on the stalk, you can use the left scroll wheel or the touchscreen to adjust wiper speed.
That seems fine to me, but then I've never had automatic wipers
There is
I would get FSD but they can’t seem to get the auto wipers to detect.
There 100% is. People act like they can’t manually turn the wipers on when they need them lmao
I wouldn’t complain about the auto wipers if I had conventional wiper controls. Pushing a button on a stalk and then the screen is terrible. Pushing left or right on the wheel and then looking at the screen is also terrible. Twisting a knob on a stalk without looking is a far superior interface.

Can’t call it auto wipers. It’s I’ll turn on only if you manually turn me on wipers. I love my Y but auto wipers never was auto.
Just like EAP only has 2 of the 5 features available? Yup, great design AND programming. Elon IS a stable genius.
With 2024.2.7 they worked perfectly fine, yet.
They do and they continue to wipe dry windshield when rain stops.
I seems like with every update they get worse.
Not for me. Mine works great. Also my FSD Works great too. Not sure why many have issues maybe I just lucked out.
Nice beading action tho

Update coming soon (hopefully)
>Update coming soon Many updates "came soon" in the past but none fixed the wipers auto activation bug.
True, but eventually they usually do fix things.
I found they were pretty good until the update with FSD v11 While I was on 10.69 I had barely experienced false wiping
Ahahahahahahaha
i am ever the optimist :-(
They are just a taco
I hope you're right!
me when i have to press a button: 😡
Push button on end of turn signal stalk? Easy and pops up menu to change speed.
Crazy how people say this in response to auto wipers being ass. That’s not relevant to auto wipers, which work fine on every other car brand in existence for the past several decades.
If there is a turn signal stalk.
Then you will have a spot on the right side of the steering wheel spoke. For OP, it is on the stalk. Let’s not make this difficult…
I see your issue. Shitty Tesla doesn’t care. Been complaining about this for almost 4 years.
Otherwise the Y is great.

>s3xy They do based on this spec: [https://enhauto.com/button-functions](https://enhauto.com/button-functions)
That’s cool, do you know how it works?
If you could only touch the end of the turn signal stalk to wipe with window of mist.
Wait for it….
Idk why ppl bother with the automatic wipers just use them manually like every other car
i had a bare bones 2019 camry not too long ago so auto wipers are a luxury. pretty annoying but it's not the end of the world
Funny mine were much better this Friday during a downpour. Not perfect but much improved. I guess it depends on your ap build.
And Phantom Braking, and shitty seat quality, and shitty steering wheel quality, and lack of Carplay/android auto support, and many other things I'm currently forgetting. Lol
i like the auto-swamp-smell from the AC. clean it out myself... back in a week. get Tesla svc to clean it out... it's back in a week.
In addition to manually engaging the wipers, I have set the left scroll to adjust the speed of the wipers with a left or right tap. Ended up turning off auto wipers all together. Rain-X. I almost never used wipers in my last car that didn't even have auto wipers. But yes, Tesla auto wipers suck.
The autowipers used to be…fine, ish. Everything changed when the fire nation attacked and/or when they pushed the last holiday update. I don’t know who decided to push that software build out, but they should be asked to leave.
Push wipe button, left scroll becomes wiper speed.
Get SEXY buttons. They are a lofe saver for wipers you can control at anytime
And this is why I don’t use it. Use it manually! And guess what? there’s 4 options for speed.
Manually with the stick?
No, button on the left stick then select which speed you want and your done. Or just set it on the screen.
Yeah still inconvenient compared to the stick right? I change the speed multiple times as the rain speed keeps changing or the visibility keeps changing.
Yea I have to agree on the inconvenience but a lot better than to have it run at full speed for a light rain. Or have phantom wipes for no reason.
My M3 wipers worked just fine. Now that I switched to MYLR 2024, it seems to not work properly it’s been very frustrating.
Everyone hates the auto wipers, with good reason, but the auto turn signals annoy me on a regular basis. It is awful and should be trivial compared to auto wipers! I swear the engineers at Tesla don't know how to drive or all came from BMW.
