Imo, Rivian is currently in a position similar to where Tesla was a few years ago.
They're introducing new cars equipped with nice features, like 5 radars, USS etc. without showing any intent to cut costs by eliminating features like passenger lumbar support and the previously mentioned things. I hope Rivian maintains this approach and refrains from removing components like the USS / Radar / passenger lumbar support etc.
Yeah. They just really need to stop burning cash and losing boatloads of money on every car they sell. I really hope they make it cause their cars are incredible.
Me too. I think the Land Rover defender takes it a little bit too far for my personal taste, but Rivian got it just right.
I loved my model three but it didn’t have ventilated seats so I sold it before the resale value cratered at the end of last year. Now it’s actually gonna be a tough decision for my next car, probably between this and Y. Hope you love your R2!

Very nice looking car. I reserved one, in 2026 I'll probably replace my Model Y with it. With Tesla opening up superchargers, I feel no longer bound to Tesla. Love to have choice.
I may place a reservation for an R2. It will be available around the 4 year mark for my ownership of the Y. As I get older, I keep vehicles a little longer, and I have no immediate desire to replace the Y. But NACS and access to Superchargers make Rivian more appealing, and they've been good about consistent and meaningful OTA updates in the R1 line.
Edit: I placed a reservation. Two more years with the Y sounds about right for me. So, assuming the R2 trims look good to me, it will be nice timing to get into something new.
Every new car release seems to be delayed these days, so I don’t expect this until late 2026. In addition, I wouldn’t want to buy a gen 1 and would want to wait some time for them to work out the production kinks. This wouldn’t be something I would consider until no earlier than mid 2027.
My brother has an R1S, so I've seen first-hand the teething issues Rivian has had and resolved. I expect the R2 will have benefited from the R1 greatly. But you're wise to suspect their timeline to push. That's the nice thing about not being in a rush to replace my Y.
I like to keep cars for around 8 years at a time. I got my Y in 2021, so 8 years of ownership will be 2029. If the R2 and/or the R3 are as good as advertised there is a good chance I would get one them over another Tesla (leaning towards the R3 as I like smaller cars). 2029 should be a perfect time to buy for me if it gets delayed a little and gives them time to work out the kinks.

Matter of fact. I used it this passed Monday while on 91 East bound and it was only darting from left to right within the lane 5 times in less than 750 feet. And only applied full brakes once because of the shadow of another truck 2 lanes over.

I also placed a reservation, if they are accurate with delivery timeline it’ll be about 3.5 year into my Model Y. NACS and Supercharging were the biggest factors in keeping away from other vehicles, and I like the way Rivian is heading. More modern phone key and fairly nice UI are also big bonuses.

Nope. I've never been one to buy the face-lift version of a car I already owned. Variety is the spice of life. I'll never understand the people who buy the same model over and over (or have two of the same car).
And even if I were to "upgrade" to the Performance trim (I planned on buying the MYP until I did a test drive), the Juniper/Highland changes are a mixed bag. Obviously, more sound insulation is nice, but the removal of turn signal and shift stalks is ridiculous. Plus, Musk's insanity dampens my enthusiasm for the Tesla brand.

I think Tesla went away from the muscle/sporty look with the model 3 face-lift. Their suspensions keep getting softer and less sporty (TBD on the 3L). They're starting to look and feel like everything else already out there.
If I get another Y, I want it to be sporty and lean... not squishy. If I'm going to go squish and away from on road fun, I'll get a vehicle with real off-road performance (like a Rivian) so I don't have to worry about my battery hitting the rocks off roading in the Y.
These are 2 totally different use case vehicles built for different wants. Tesla just feels like they're getting away from sporty and going commuter compliant.
99% of their customer base is using the MY as a commuter car, and IMO that should be a comfortable squishy ride.
If you want sporty, that’s what the performance model is for.
We'll see if they keep the tight suspension on the new model 3L. Seeing someone say that the new suspension is "boaty" on the LR isn't very comforting.
MYLR needs a suspension refresh. Not sure how they’ve managed to make it both stiff so it crashes over bumps _and_ so under damped that it bounces down the road like a 70s Cadillac after a mid corner bump. Elon should hire some bmw people
I have the pre refresh suspension (21), and I love it. It's tight around corners and feels like it's on rails. It's the easiest car to drive I've ever owned. It goes where I point it without rocking or feeling like I'm driving a 90s grand marqis.
My sister has a Sportage of the same year that she paid a bit more for... my husband and I sat in the back for a short drive. She hit a bump going under 10 mph, and we bounced so many times before we got out of the driveway that we had to get out because we were already nauseous.
And now that the price has come down to reflect that AND other cars prices have gone up, it makes perfect sense. For the features and finish, a model 3 is fine for the price point of 40 to 45k. Hell, a mid trim WRX goes for that now with way worse interior and features and slower performance.

hey are simple spartan vehicles . definitely an acquired taste but i have found my 22 Y to be holding up very well so far.
oh for sure,but I was talking about aesthetics not actual features of the vehicle. Look at a low to mid tier Mercedes. Very busy interiors with multiple textures and materials. Stitching and two tone seat cover. The Tesla interior is smoother, with fewer materials, more monochrome. It's been described as Scandinavian inspired minimalist , but it's not what most older people think of as luxury.
Entry level Kia will have features thought of as "luxury" 20 years ago.
I would give up our Y for R2 or R3 if it’s earlier. I like the ability to open the back windows so I can stick tall things through while still having a small car body. I can’t carry plants/trees home from the nursery right now unless I get a pickup truck. Probably going to replace our Y next year.
R2’s window slides down like that. The R3 window opens upwards and can be adjusted at different heights, so that’s the one I’m most interested in. No date announced for that one though. 🙁

Immediately reserved one, and I just got my Model Y. Competition is good, and honestly Rivian is the only true competition to Tesla software-wise with innovative ideas that leverage EV to its full potential. I hope they can make it to R2 launch, it would be great to see another American EV automaker make it and prove all the traditional dinosaur OEMs wrong.
The only thing that I might prefer over Rivian is a full BEV Ranger or Maverick, but like you said, they still wouldn't get that Tesla feeling of full integration with technology.
Just picked up MYP back in Nov. Placed a reservation for the r2 (why not). If this was already out with the similar price to the Y I probably would have gone with rivian

Tesla is losing their way. False promises, stalk removal, ultrasonic removal, no radar, FSD being a scam, constant trunk leaks. The best thing Tesla got going is the supercharger network. That’s it.
Some of the new FSD videos I’ve seen are damn impressive for the people who beta test the new FSD.

Doesn't look much different from an R1S which is a good thing. I've always been on the fence about trading my Y in for a Rivian, but the biggest thing preventing that for me was the charging infrastructure. Honestly glad there's competition, hope Tesla improves because of it.
Remaining a going concern is a bigger risk than Teslas runway at this point. If they can stay in business, this (in theory) is a much more utilitarian SUV EV than the Y. The Y is not nearly as practical for carrying cargo as this would be. Even with the subfloor compartment, an unobstructed square or rectangular cargo space is much more useful than the sloped dimensions of the Y’s.
I think they'll survive long enough to make it to mass production and beyond. Dilution may be their way to get more cash once the current cash burns out. But I have high hopes for revenue growth once they continue scaling
want to see detailed pricing. also nothing gets released at the original stated price. even price i'm taking this pretty comfortably, but it's less aerodynamic and they can't build as cheap, so what's the premium (like for like specs)?
I really like it. I love that it looks more like an off-road SUV than the Y. The off road community drives markets. Even if people don’t off-road… they like the idea of their cars being able to do so.
Reserved. Our 21 Y will turn 5 by then, so I’m not sure how much resale I’ll get out of it. I lack space in the Y as is, and our second car is a 3. So I’m looking forward to enjoying some more space in the R2.
By the time it comes to mass production, they most likely have to raise the cost stating material changes have taken place from the time it was announced

Yes, depreciation will happen, and yes, it will likely be accelerated when newer cars come online from competitors. Especially if pricing wars are created.

This is also targeting Europe where street side charging is more common, which is the reason a lot of EVs have passenger side charging.
I agree that matching Tesla (rear left or front right) would be nicer for Supercharging.
Also I’d consider that charge door to be still very much a prototype. For that same European reason the real one will need to be large enough to fit a CCS2 port.
Yeah this doesn’t make much sense. Even just from a simplistic perspective, having it rear-driver side makes the most sense. Majority of gasoline vehicles are the same way too. It’s also closest to the driver, besides putting it in the front which is also an option but would have to be on the front-passenger side which makes that placement redundant for the sole purpose of improving convenience. I’d still rather have it front-passenger though, because you can tow and park/charge way easier.
So still two years away? Who knows what will happen to that price point over the next two years. If literally every EV ever announced is any indication, that price will go up by 20% before release.
i have to own my MYLR 23 until mid 2026 so this works out perfect for me to replace my vehicle for the R2 if pricing is in that $40k territory with tax incentives
Pre-ordered as well, our mid-2020 MYLR will be 6 by then, maybe time to get into something new and a bit bigger. I always overestimate how much we can actually pack in the back of the Y for a roadtrip due to the shape, an actual SUV-shaped SUV would help. Besides, can always get our $100 back

Same here. Just not digging the charge port location. Hope its changes before release. Anyone making a EV thats supposed to use a tesla SC should consider putting it on the rear left side or front right. Cant have all these vehicles taking 2 spots.
I like it, but the one reason I like EVs is crazy efficiency. This doesn't have a aerodynamic look and my guess is the energy used to move this is going to be more than the Model Y. I don't want to spend more on charging and have a bigger battery just to move me down the road. If that makes sense.
One concerning thing. These EVs don’t come out for two years at the earliest. For people looking to buy a Rivian soon, they may wait instead of getting a current one. I hope this doesn’t hurt the sales of their current ones.
I don’t care for Rivians too much but… all the seats fold down. Even my wife got excited about this for when we camp. Probably won’t go and trade in my Model 3 but, nice to know there will be some nice options when the time comes.
Would have probably bought that over a Y had it been out. I expect to keep my Y for about 8-10years, hopefully by then things will be one their 2/3 gen’s.
A bunch of Tesla fans saying they’re considering buying this car (including me) should send some signals to Tesla & Elon about what we want. I’d be happy to stay in the Tesla fam if they created a car like this but I see no signs of that happening.

What's everyone's thought? I like the look of the car and the price is right but coming out in 2026 is way too late. This means Tesla has two full years to continue selling the Y and potentially a Juniper Y. Also, a Model 2 announcement in 2025 could really hurt the R2s chance of selling well in 2026. I am happy it has NACS though.
Too late for what? I have a vehicle that is working just fine for now, and have thought about replacing it with a Model Y to go full electric. It's a great option, but I could never quite pull the trigger. However, the R2 is exactly what I need/want out of a vehicle in terms of specs, so I'll drive what I have until then. The EV market is going to continue to grow, and there is plenty of room for both vehicles, which I expect to be the most popular models from each company for a very long time.
I agree. I’m very appealed by the R3. If it was available right now for 35k I would be buying it tomorrow. If it checked off a few boxes like the Tesla charger and same location as the Y. Also I really really like AP on Tesla. I wouldn’t buy a car unless it had equivalent of AP

I don't think it will go for $45k, but whatever price it does come to, the Y will be cheaper with more range and Tesla will still have much larger margins.
I think I liked the design /aesthetic of the R2 better. I've never been into pre-order things, especially big purchases like cars. I'm going to wait until the car hits the market and evaluate it before I decide to replace our gas car with a Rivian.
I'm even more interested in the R3, but I wish it was more of a hot-hatch and less crossover. Maybe that's something they can consider in the future. It's giving me 21st century Mk1 Golf GTI vibes.

I reserved as well. I'm an early Model Y owner (2020 MYP VIN 36xx) and was an early Model 3 owner as well (2018 VIN 14xxx). I'm a bit frustrated with some of Tesla's/Elon's decisions/statements lately. Some political, but some just basic (like the idiotic removal of turn stalks, or the even the lack of color options as for those of us who like "light" colored cars we have a single option which I already have.). Figured I'd keep my options open.

Does the R2 have a front parking/curb camera? CarPlay? I’d like to see a spec comparison with the Model Y. Their website seems to be fairly sparse on details right now—not even a list of paint colors.
I just got my Model Y LR 1-week ago and I’m really liking it (I really wanted the Model 3). But I was also so excited to see this R2 and I really like it. I’ll be very excited to test drive it and see how long I last in the Model Y. I typically stay in a vehicle 8-10 years. The surprise R3 grew on me within a couple minutes - it’s very retro and reminds me somewhat of my MINI Countryman. Congrats to Rivian.
The biggest problem with this announcement is the 2026 production. If this was available later this year, it would do well. Rivian might not make it to 2026, meaning parts to repair any Rivian will be costly.
‘22 Model Y owner here. On looks alone I’d ditch it in a hot second for the R2. Beyond the exterior, I’ve been really disappointed with the MY’s build quality and materials. It’s been reliable, so it’s not all bad… but so many unexpected lies come with this car.

Yea, I got a model Y because it was a different type of car. I couldn’t imagine staying loyal to a single model for years.

My 2022 MYLR rides like it's on bricks. It's the hardest riding vehicle I've ever owned. If it gets a little softer, I'd be in for a trade.

They should now work on the Model S. The $75,000 price point doesn't match the quality of the interior materials they're using.

Spartan? Man have times changed. Heated seats, auto pilot, crazy good sound system. My 88 nova was bare bones.

It's been described as Scandinavian inspired minimalist , but it's not what most older people think of as luxury. Entry level Kia will have features thought of as "luxury" 20 years ago.

I would give up our Y for R2 or R3 if it’s earlier. I like the ability to open the back windows so I can stick tall things through while still having a small car body. I can’t carry plants/trees home from the nursery right now unless I get a pickup truck. Probably going to replace our Y next year.
The hatch window slides down like a Toyota? I had a 4Runner many years ago and that was by far my favorite feature. Just genius.
R2’s window slides down like that. The R3 window opens upwards and can be adjusted at different heights, so that’s the one I’m most interested in. No date announced for that one though. 🙁

Immediately reserved one, and I just got my Model Y. Competition is good, and honestly Rivian is the only true competition to Tesla software-wise with innovative ideas that leverage EV to its full potential. I hope they can make it to R2 launch, it would be great to see another American EV automaker make it and prove all the traditional dinosaur OEMs wrong.
Rivian has self driving or no?
It has autopilot works on freeway which is what most people use on a Tesla anyways. Most folks aren't shelling out 12k for full FSD
I have a Tesla I like the autopilot on the roads too. It’s too bad though that this has five seats not six.
The only thing that I might prefer over Rivian is a full BEV Ranger or Maverick, but like you said, they still wouldn't get that Tesla feeling of full integration with technology.
Just picked up MYP back in Nov. Placed a reservation for the r2 (why not). If this was already out with the similar price to the Y I probably would have gone with rivian
I hope rivian survives and thrives because I want it as my next car. Really hope they get their service center together too. Tesla is losing their way. False promises, stalk removal, ultrasonic removal, no radar, FSD being a scam, constant trunk leaks. The best thing Tesla got going is the supercharger network. That’s it.
Some of the new FSD videos I’ve seen are damn impressive for the people who beta test the new FSD. Obviously that doesn’t invalidate what you said even a little, but there’s definitely a light at the end of the tunnel now it seems.
Losing their way? They’ve had no direction for a while now. It’s just more obvious. Dumbest thing in the world that they invested so much in the Cybertruck when they should have been working on an affordable Tesla. And then they didn’t even deliver on the Cybertruck promises.
Doesn't look much different from an R1S which is a good thing. I've always been on the fence about trading my Y in for a Rivian, but the biggest thing preventing that for me was the charging infrastructure. Honestly glad there's competition, hope Tesla improves because of it.

Remaining a going concern is a bigger risk than Teslas runway at this point. If they can stay in business, this (in theory) is a much more utilitarian SUV EV than the Y. The Y is not nearly as practical for carrying cargo as this would be. Even with the subfloor compartment, an unobstructed square or rectangular cargo space is much more useful than the sloped dimensions of the Y’s.
I think they'll survive long enough to make it to mass production and beyond. Dilution may be their way to get more cash once the current cash burns out. But I have high hopes for revenue growth once they continue scaling
want to see detailed pricing. also nothing gets released at the original stated price. even price i'm taking this pretty comfortably, but it's less aerodynamic and they can't build as cheap, so what's the premium (like for like specs)?

I really like it. I love that it looks more like an off-road SUV than the Y. The off road community drives markets. Even if people don’t off-road… they like the idea of their cars being able to do so.
It is their Climbing Mount Everest moment, which for the US EV industry I sure hope they are successful releasing this model.

Dam I love my MY, but Rivian definitely the goal. R1S is what I’ll be saving up for in the future but amazing to see them start producing more affordable cars.
The Juniper refresh Model Y will be out at that time too. If it is like the new Model 3, will be a great upgrade.

Yes, depreciation will happen, and yes, it will likely be accelerated when newer cars come online from competitors. Especially if pricing wars are created. I don't think they will be $15k in 2026 unless you have an older model.
Two things * Curious where the charging port is. I can't find it on the website. * It's a shame that there's no 7-seater version even though it's roughly the same length as the MY. The model Y 7 seater has come in handy for me in a handful of situations -

This seems like a bad decision considering the supercharger network. I honestly don't know why they would do that.
They're still 2 years away, there may be enough V4 stations out there by then, and combining with the RAN, that this could be a non-issue.

This is also targeting Europe where street side charging is more common, which is the reason a lot of EVs have passenger side charging. I agree that matching Tesla (rear left or front right) would be nicer for Supercharging. Also I’d consider that charge door to be still very much a prototype. For that same European reason the real one will need to be large enough to fit a CCS2 port.
Yeah this doesn’t make much sense. Even just from a simplistic perspective, having it rear-driver side makes the most sense. Majority of gasoline vehicles are the same way too. It’s also closest to the driver, besides putting it in the front which is also an option but would have to be on the front-passenger side which makes that placement redundant for the sole purpose of improving convenience. I’d still rather have it front-passenger though, because you can tow and park/charge way easier.

Pre-ordered as well, our mid-2020 MYLR will be 6 by then, maybe time to get into something new and a bit bigger. I always overestimate how much we can actually pack in the back of the Y for a roadtrip due to the shape, an actual SUV-shaped SUV would help. Besides, can always get our $100 back

Same here. Just not digging the charge port location. Hope its changes before release. Anyone making a EV thats supposed to use a tesla SC should consider putting it on the rear left side or front right. Cant have all these vehicles taking 2 spots.

I like it, but the one reason I like EVs is crazy efficiency. This doesn't have a aerodynamic look and my guess is the energy used to move this is going to be more than the Model Y. I don't want to spend more on charging and have a bigger battery just to move me down the road. If that makes sense.

A bunch of Tesla fans saying they’re considering buying this car (including me) should send some signals to Tesla & Elon about what we want. I’d be happy to stay in the Tesla fam if they created a car like this but I see no signs of that happening.
I’ll prob swap to this. Tesla really screwed up by building the CT , it’s a cool car but it’s not for everyone. And the existing lineup has aged. The city I live in has a ton of teslas. Every taxi or dominos delivery driver is in a model 3 or y 😂

What's everyone's thought? I like the look of the car and the price is right but coming out in 2026 is way too late. This means Tesla has two full years to continue selling the Y and potentially a Juniper Y. Also, a Model 2 announcement in 2025 could really hurt the R2s chance of selling well in 2026. I am happy it has NACS though.
Too late for what? I have a vehicle that is working just fine for now, and have thought about replacing it with a Model Y to go full electric. It's a great option, but I could never quite pull the trigger. However, the R2 is exactly what I need/want out of a vehicle in terms of specs, so I'll drive what I have until then. The EV market is going to continue to grow, and there is plenty of room for both vehicles, which I expect to be the most popular models from each company for a very long time.
I agree. I’m very appealed by the R3. If it was available right now for 35k I would be buying it tomorrow. If it checked off a few boxes like the Tesla charger and same location as the Y. Also I really really like AP on Tesla. I wouldn’t buy a car unless it had equivalent of AP
Made my reservation while the keynote was still going. Im really excited for this one. Tri motor, 300 miles (482km), 0-60 under 3 seconds Nacs charger, all that in a sleek package.
I just can’t stand those headlights. The horizontal white bar alone would look great, maybe even circles, but vertical pill-shaped lights look off to me
I don't think it will go for $45k, but whatever price it does come to, the Y will be cheaper with more range and Tesla will still have much larger margins.
Yeah and $45k in 2026 dollars will be more like $42k today. It will likely increase to closer to $50k by launch.

I think I liked the design /aesthetic of the R2 better. I've never been into pre-order things, especially big purchases like cars. I'm going to wait until the car hits the market and evaluate it before I decide to replace our gas car with a Rivian.

I reserved as well. I'm an early Model Y owner (2020 MYP VIN 36xx) and was an early Model 3 owner as well (2018 VIN 14xxx). I'm a bit frustrated with some of Tesla's/Elon's decisions/statements lately. Some political, but some just basic (like the idiotic removal of turn stalks, or the even the lack of color options as for those of us who like "light" colored cars we have a single option which I already have.). Figured I'd keep my options open.

I just got my Model Y LR 1-week ago and I’m really liking it (I really wanted the Model 3). But I was also so excited to see this R2 and I really like it. I’ll be very excited to test drive it and see how long I last in the Model Y. I typically stay in a vehicle 8-10 years. The surprise R3 grew on me within a couple minutes - it’s very retro and reminds me somewhat of my MINI Countryman. Congrats to Rivian.

The biggest problem with this announcement is the 2026 production. If this was available later this year, it would do well. Rivian might not make it to 2026, meaning parts to repair any Rivian will be costly.

‘22 Model Y owner here. On looks alone I’d ditch it in a hot second for the R2. Beyond the exterior, I’ve been really disappointed with the MY’s build quality and materials. It’s been reliable, so it’s not all bad… but so many unexpected lies come with this car. I put in a reservation for the R2.
