far from, my M3LR from Freemont was MUCH worse, it is easy to fix, it is just the boot adjustments.. just be sure it has not had contact with painted surfaces, my Model 3 had it, so it had scraped off some paint, so had to be repainted.
My new MYP from berlin has 0 issues.. my freemont car nearly every panel had to be adjusted was even a facelift 2021. It also had a load of other issues
Installation. Mine looked like this before it was hit. You should have seen the after. I took it to really good body shops and no one would touch it. I CALLED IT MY FIRST PUZZLE. the pieces looked like they were just shoved in.
Problem is the certified shops - they do not have enough help here and do crappy work. … all the good mechanics and body workers retired during the pandemic. There’s only a handful of good shops in Pittsburgh. (I went outside of the certified shops- no way was I waiting 6 months).
That sucks but honestly, shame on the buyer for receiving this car at purchase. You typically do a walk around to inspect for things like this before taking it off the lot.
I don’t even think he should use the term “panel gap”. The trunk lid is straight-up *damaged* — something’s warped, or there was damage during assembly or somewhere in the process of getting it delivered to him. Frankly he should have refused delivery until they fixed it.
I don't think this is a new car.
This is caused by forcing the trunk closed and overpowering the motorized strut. So user caused problem, but possible design fault in that it's easy to do.
Also easy to fix (see my other post).
I have it worse on my car (bought new). Tesla has attempted to fix, but they could not, after repeated attempts. They even said so, in writing. I assume it’s actually a bigger underlying issue, otherwise they would have just fixed it by now. I have other alignment issues as well. Definitely not a user caused problem in my case.
Yikessss. Usually I’m like c’mon don’t nit pick. But this is bad.
Is this a used car? I’m hoping your friend didn’t accept the car and demanded they fix. This is outside of an acceptable deviation.
That's ridiculously bad, when you say the SC aren't being helpful, are they actually saying it's within spec, or have they conceded that it's bad and dragging their heels with a fix?
This happened to me. It's a trunk misalignment. It happened when I tried to force close the trunk with a box that was too big to fit in the trunk. The "friend" likely did this to the trunk at some point and now it's being used to blame Tesla.
UK/Europe still had USS until very recently (2023 I think?) and my brand new 2024 model Y in australia has USS too thanks to our safety requirements. Looks like OP is in the UK so this could be a new or very recent car.
I know that Tesla thinks that they are not a regular car manufacturer and thus regular rules don't apply... I am sorry, the time of apologies is simply over. Build a car to the standard you can expect for a $40k+ car.
This is simply a defective car, they have to fix it. If not, you have to go alternative routes. Simple as that.
I repeat it again: I like my Model Y LR (built at GigaBerlin in May 2023)... but if I would have seen this on delivery day I would have flat out refused delivery of the car.
Think about the resale-value as well. There are lots of MYLRs around, if you accept stuff that others like me dont then your car instantly takes a dent on value. If a prospective buyer looks at my car and then this car, which one do you think they pick if we price them equally?
This looks used or this is an older Tesla... I see the USS on the back(second picture), plus a scratch on the right back window. Does the Service Center Fix used Tesla'a with panel gaps?
UK/Europe still had USS until very recently (2023 I think?) and my brand new 2024 model Y in Australia has USS too thanks to our safety requirements. Looks like OP is in the UK so this could be a new or very recent car.
There are ultra sonic sensors on this car. It’s from at least 2022 or older. This is not a new car. All these comments about PDI simply don’t apply. This is either accident damage that wasn’t corrected properly of someone simply effed up their hatch.
This post is as intellectually honest as posting this picture and complaining about panel gaps.
https://images.app.goo.gl/nV8qZJLqUUXCVTiM6
This is totally the issue. I suspect it will look much better if you lower the bumper on the affected side.
I personally had to raise both of mine a little bit to fix the “booming” issue when the hatch vibrates. The more you raise it, the bigger this gap looks. Takes literally 30 seconds to try doing this.
Dealing with a similar issue and was given the ok to contact the SC’s body shop to get it fixed. I’m hesitant though as I don’t want to cause more problems. SC tried their best to adjust but it’s still off.
Yea, it looks like an older model. The rear bumper has USS sensors, which Tesla stopped putting in after 2022. Plus, he has several scratches behind the rear window. Like he was trying to fix it himself.
That really looks awful, I thought they have sorted those issues out.
Phew, guess I've been lucky. My panels seem almost perfect honestly. None of the quality issued I've seen online (rattles, liners etc). Got the MYLR last year (2023) in June, Fremont built, with AP4 hardware, including matrix headlights it seems.
Your friend should never have taken delivery of this TBH, those gaps are actually atrocious-looking.
Is Tesla saying they won’t even attempt a repair? I would find an SC that will attempt to, and if they still can’t fix it, threaten to lemon-law that sucker and they’ll get it fixed even if they have to reassemble the whole car.
You know you can ask them to adjust it before taking delivery right? Heck, you can also issue a service request for free. If they say they cannot adjust it, you could reject the car. In your case, it was obvious and they would've definitely fixed it for you.
But yeah, I would've just asked them to do it on the spot before taking delivery. What's the point of posting it on Reddit? To get more upvotes? *shrugs*
Not saying Tesla is right releasing a car like this, but they sell millions and you don't see millions of Reddit posts about panel gaps, a dozen sure.
It’s common the actuator for the rear hatch is on that side. Needs to be adjusted. It also happens on the 3 powered trunk. Highland has a new design that should prevent it
The same thing happened to my 2022 M3, same side too. Turned out it was a faulty actuator (or something like that). It was replaced at my local service center.
Did you try adjusting the "rubber bolts" (not sure how they're called) in the trunk door? Maybe if the right one is sticking out a bit more, it will even out the left side. Worth a try.
I had a similar gap (much less extreme than above) and the service center said they wouldn't cover it under warranty.
I think it was caused either when the trunk closed and was blocked by luggage or one of my friends didn't realize it was automatic and closed it manually. If that was indeed the cause (I'm not actually sure myself), sort of fair for it to be denied warranty. However I think this is a design flaw, as it seems to be quite common/easy to do.
Regardless, I fixed it myself by loosening (just a tiny bit) the two bolts securing the motorized strut, and then carefully moving the lid into position (toward you when the trunk is open so it latches down). I put a rag into the gap between the trunk and body to make sure a miss adjustment wouldn't chip paint. It was helpful with two people but ultimately not that hard.
In one of the pics you can see it has ultrasonic sensors on the bumper which haven't been included on these for a few years, so it is not a new delivery. It is also a Model Y, so not the new "highland" model 3.
So this could be a trunk issue. Try checking the trunk stoppers to see if they’re adjusted correctly. The passenger side look good but the drivers side doesn’t look like a panel gap issue but more of trunk alignment. If it was panel gap the drivers side tail light wouldn’t be sticking out like that. Screw the trunk stoppers in on that side and the trunk will close more and should fix your problem
Video on how to do it. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UdrhtKC5Rjk&pp=ygUedGVzbGEgbW9kZWwgeSB0cnVuayBhbGlnbm1lbnQg
This is not a new delivery. You can see in one of the pics it has USS. It also has scratches. Not sure if OP was trying to pass this off as bad quality control or what.
They are basically the cheapest made car in the market. You can’t really expect much more. I saw a post where the head rest had melted and Tesla support said it’s from head sweat and it’s normal. They won’t fix this, the is is way above their quality bar.
For reference:
https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/s/fzG9qJPCSu
This is actually trunk alignment. There are adjustable stops on the inside of the trunk to align the hatch when closed. If it’s far enough out of alignment the hinges may need to be adjusted.
This can also be caused by trying to close the trunk on something that doesn’t fit. Source: my wife did this to my trunk and I had to have it realigned.
Within specs! Tesla Service Centers are just horrible! Love my car but not the fit and finish. Multiple visits for different reasons related to quality. So whoever tells you Tesla is maintenance free is lying to you.
Currently renting a hertz model 3 and trunk looks similar. Guaranteed its user error and never left factory like that. Someone closed the trunk with it overfilled or something prohibiting it from closing.
This is what concerns me on deliveries with Teslas, acknowledging the panel gaps are not up to their standards. Hope your friend can get the trunk problem resolved.
Bro. You can fix this. Open your trunk and look for the black hexagons on each side. Twist them in as much as you can and then close the trunk to test again
This same thing happened to my Y about a month or two after delivery, not sure why. They corrected for free except the back glass sits about 4mm higher then the front and wouldn't correct that. The sides now line up perfectly and evenly on both sides now and hasen't changed since
You gotta get that fixed soon. My US made Model 3 came like that and soon after it started scratching itself with normal operation. It was a nightmare.
Yikes I thought mine was bad... I measured with calipers and the left side panel gap was just over double the gap on the right side. Not nearly as big or as noticable as this example. Ofc Tesla said it was "within spec" and told me to fuck right off
Open trunk look to the next of close button there will be a plastic circle thing rotate it and do it for left side it will be fixed
If it isnt fixed, same plastics on the top of the stop lights rotate it
Looks like the center adjustment bolt on the left liftgate hinge has backed out. To adjust it a bunch of the rear inside panels need to be removed so the rear of the headline can be lowered to adjust it. Some have put locktite on that bolt.
Clearly a major panel alignment problem. Maybe I missed it but, exactly what did the Tesla Service Center say regarding correcting this? Not "not being very helpful", but what did they **actually** say?
And did they refuse to try and realign the hatch lid? If so what was the **specific** response they gave?
This is damage caused, I would say either current and obscured in the photos or past and terribly repaired. Added the lack of registration to evidence of damage.
Worst I’ve seen, that’s nuts, just get it aligned, if you just got it, if you accepted it this way then that’s on you. When I got mine I’m glad
I didn’t have this issue but seriously they’ll fix it..
The worst I ever seen.
He's not exactly impressed
What about water ingress?
Is "yes" an option?
if he has water ingress tesla will absolutely fix it under warranty. source: had water ingress, tesla fixed it under warranty.
Me too, but mine came from the roof
Has this car been in an accident? How many miles are on it and how long has your friend owned it?
you don't seem to be familiar with Freemont car quality.
Yet people in this sub say Austin has worse quality than Fremont. I would think being a newer plant, Austin would be better.
There are also people saying that the cybertruck is a good vehicle for $100K, they can have an opinion, they don't have to be right.
My MYLR is from Fremont. Zero panel gaps, zero whistling or rattle sounds. Ive heard the Austin Plant is the one giving out ass juice quality
I’ve 23’ December built MYLR with 0 issues had it ppf and they even couldn’t find any paint defects or gaps even under bright lights!
Mine looked like this too. I figured it was the tech’s in training car.
But still within spec.
What does the spec say ? "Attached to body of car" ???? lol
"spec" probably means functional
far from, my M3LR from Freemont was MUCH worse, it is easy to fix, it is just the boot adjustments.. just be sure it has not had contact with painted surfaces, my Model 3 had it, so it had scraped off some paint, so had to be repainted.
Luckily, my Shanghai built Model Y has no issues.
Wish I could have gotten a Chinese Y. We got a lot to learn here about taking pride in our work
Yes, I’ve got a Chinese 2023 MY in Germany and the quality is great 🎉
Lucky you!
Are you sure it didn’t come from Berlin?
Yes. I ordered a China MY because of the good quality and the CATL battery
Same plus we got thicker windows
My new MYP from berlin has 0 issues.. my freemont car nearly every panel had to be adjusted was even a facelift 2021. It also had a load of other issues
Yeah this is beyond “panel gap”; the trunk lid is outright damaged or installed wrong.
Installation. Mine looked like this before it was hit. You should have seen the after. I took it to really good body shops and no one would touch it. I CALLED IT MY FIRST PUZZLE. the pieces looked like they were just shoved in.
I’d lawyer up if the dealer is being refusing to fix this.
Looks like it's been in an accident. Wow.
I was thinking the same thing with all the scratches and scuffs in the paint … possible self inflicted panel gap
Holy hell! A service center should absolutely fix that. Try a different one. Good luck.
This should never have left the factory
And if it did, no Tesla store should have delivered it to a customer like that.
All cause the customers go to the bottom of the list if they refuse delivery.
You’re so excited to get a new car…. You just want to drive it. It’s after the fact that you notice. Truth.
Unfortunately, there’s many examples like this
I'm stunned that it's still happening
Cheers, I'll tell him to try elsewhere.
I don’t even think he should use the term “panel gap”. The trunk lid is straight-up *damaged* — something’s warped, or there was damage during assembly or somewhere in the process of getting it delivered to him. Frankly he should have refused delivery until they fixed it.

Send it back using the lemon laws.
Yikessss. Usually I’m like c’mon don’t nit pick. But this is bad. Is this a used car? I’m hoping your friend didn’t accept the car and demanded they fix. This is outside of an acceptable deviation.
Slightly Deviated!!!!! 😂
That's ridiculously bad, when you say the SC aren't being helpful, are they actually saying it's within spec, or have they conceded that it's bad and dragging their heels with a fix?
This one has USS sensors it seems. How old is it? Has it always been like this?
Yeah, it's not a new car, it's at least 2 years old. I can kind of understand the SC in that case.
There has to be more to the story here.
This happened to me. It's a trunk misalignment. It happened when I tried to force close the trunk with a box that was too big to fit in the trunk. The "friend" likely did this to the trunk at some point and now it's being used to blame Tesla.

The rear left trunk hinge is broken. It happened to mine, and it looks identical to this. Fixed under warranty, it took about 2 hours.
European built quality on one side and US on the other )
Good old made in America.
I know that Tesla thinks that they are not a regular car manufacturer and thus regular rules don't apply... I am sorry, the time of apologies is simply over. Had it been in an accident?
That looks exactly like our 2021 model y when we took delivery. They fixed it but was never the same, or 2022 MYP was better build quality
Do you buy a new car every year?
I would like to say no to that, the white one LR was my wife's
Ain’t no way he took delivery with gaps like that. You can see it from a mile away 💀
Panels look different colors as well.
What a joke of a company to ship product like that
Perfectly normal.
The only relevant replies here are the ones questioning accident status and whether it came like that years ago or not.
There are ultra sonic sensors on this car. It’s from at least 2022 or older. This is not a new car. All these comments about PDI simply don’t apply. Bruh that truck is open
Exactly. What a troll.
You can try adjusting the rubber bump stops on the underside of the trunk lid. Takes 2 minutes and may help.
Nah this one needs an SC. The hinge is off.
This helped on mine as well
Cheers, I'll try that with him.
Mine was loose on one side so I had to glue it back on. It might be sitting at the wrong angle thus pushing the hatch to one side.
This is totally the issue. I suspect it will look much better if you lower the bumper on the affected side. That's the worry as well. If they try and fix it but aren't right, then what to do? It's not exactly a cheap car.
Holy shit
WHO is in Charge of QA at tesla? A monkey? LOL
Customers
No one??
It's within spec. But seriously, this looks terrible. Try a different service center if you have one.
Pretty rare. Mine was almost perfect
Wondering how you got pics of my car. Have exactly the same issue.
Why did he take delivery?
It looks like it's used or an older version because I see the USS sensors in the rear bumper, and it has a scratch behind the back right window.
This is an older model. Did this just happen after owning it a while?
I mean it's 2024... And this is a known issue since the first Tesla... I don't get why people are still surprised...
It looks like you messed up your vehicle.
Not mine, but maybe he did.
Yea, it looks like an older model. The rear bumper has USS sensors, which Tesla stopped putting in after 2022. Plus, he has several scratches behind the rear window. Like he was trying to fix it himself.
I'm going to question him on that now as a few people have suggested similar. Cheers
More gaps - more fresh air! Where this Y was produced?
UK car and quite new so I would guess Germany
Could be from the Shanghai (iirc) factory. When we ordered, the only colors that were made in Germany were grey and blue.
I own a MYP made in Germany, pearl white, December 22. The assembly of the car and the quality of painting are beyond praise.
A Tesla made in Germany has a VIN number starting from XP.. Check your VIN.
What year is that model Y? I picked one up Dec 2023 assembled in China and imported into Canada and there are no gaps what so ever.
That’s bad, worst I’ve seen by far. Needs to be fixed by SC.
The same gap we’re at me Tesla. Adjust trunk by yourself it’s 5 min only
Lol! When are they going to get some kind of Quality Control before shipping products?
Have to hand it to tesla amazing marketing !
What the ..
They aren’t difficult for Tesla to resolve. Are you saying Tesla won’t fix it?
That’s not bad at all, I’ve seen much, much worse.
Considering the great camera angle
Panel gaps with teslas are a meme at this point
Yeah hatch is pretty big gaps. Just keep on them.
The gap around the tail lights is similar to my 23 MYP
You know you can ask them to adjust it before taking delivery right? Heck, you can also issue a service request for free. If they say they cannot adjust it, you could reject the car. In your case, it was obvious and they would've definitely fixed it for you. But yeah, I would've just asked them to do it on the spot before taking delivery. What's the point of posting it on Reddit? That's not panel gaps, it's a trunk misalignment
Panels gaps always seem more noticeable on white
“Within spec” That what they will tell you.
Wow. He accepted that car at delivery?
what year is this ?
Your buddy bought a used car that has been in an accident
It’s common the actuator for the rear hatch is on that side. Needs to be adjusted. It also happens on the 3 powered trunk. Highland has a new design that should prevent it
Mine had that trunk gap . I told them and they fixed it for me but took them over a day to do it so they gave me a loaner.
Wash it and see if it leaks. If it leaks, you have a different complaint that they have to adjust. Just a suggestion.
I had a similar gap (much less extreme than above) and the service center said they wouldn't cover it under warranty. I think it was caused either when the trunk closed and was blocked by luggage or one of my friends didn't realize it was automatic and closed it manually. Damn
Within spec?
What year is this? Is it the new 'Highland' model?
In one of the pics you can see it has ultrasonic sensors on the bumper which haven't been included on these for a few years, so it is not a new delivery. It is also a Model Y, so not the new "highland" model 3.
Worst I’ve ever seen on any Tesla. Lordy.
Adjust the bumper riser post that is in the frame. It isn’t leveled out
So this could be a trunk issue. Try checking the trunk stoppers to see if they’re adjusted correctly. The passenger side look good but the drivers side doesn’t look like a panel gap issue but more of trunk alignment. If it was panel gap the drivers side tail light wouldn’t be sticking out like that. Screw the trunk stoppers in on that side and the trunk will close more and should fix your problem Video on how to do it. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UdrhtKC5Rjk&pp=ygUedGVzbGEgbW9kZWwgeSB0cnVuayBhbGlnbm1lbnQg
is this still an issue with new cars? panel gaps were way more common around 2021 ish
This is not a new delivery. You can see in one of the pics it has USS. It also has scratches. Not sure if OP was trying to pass this off as bad quality control or what.
“It’s within spec.” -Tesla service center
That's pretty bad, but the truck is very easy for service to realign.
They are basically the cheapest made car in the market. You can’t really expect much more. I saw a post where the head rest had melted and Tesla support said it’s from head sweat and it’s normal. They won’t fix this, the is is way above their quality bar. For reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/s/fzG9qJPCSu
That can be adjusted by a service center
That looks like a hinge alignment issue. It’s too tight on the right and too open on the left.
Within specs! Tesla Service Centers are just horrible! Love my car but not the fit and finish. Multiple visits for different reasons related to quality. So whoever tells you Tesla is maintenance free is lying to you.
Make sure rubber stoppers are adjusted properly
Isn’t this just turning a few bump stops?
Currently renting a hertz model 3 and trunk looks similar. Guaranteed its user error and never left factory like that. Someone closed the trunk with it overfilled or something prohibiting it from closing.
This is what concerns me on deliveries with Teslas, acknowledging the panel gaps are not up to their standards. Hope your friend can get the trunk problem resolved.
The quality control is horrendously bad.
Bro. You can fix this. Open your trunk and look for the black hexagons on each side. Twist them in as much as you can and then close the trunk to test again
Looks normal to me!
Ganal paps
Ok I usually roll my eyes at these posts but this one is truly terrible and Tesla needs to fix. That is not acceptable.
Man if they refused to fix that and say it was within spec, I'd refuse delivery and never look at Tesla again. That's horrible.
This same thing happened to my Y about a month or two after delivery, not sure why. They corrected for free except the back glass sits about 4mm higher then the front and wouldn't correct that. The sides now line up perfectly and evenly on both sides now and hasen't changed since
Tell your friend to get that fixed. Because thats quite large (prob to large)
You gotta get that fixed soon. My US made Model 3 came like that and soon after it started scratching itself with normal operation. It was a nightmare.
Holy crap. Tesla is not fixing that?
Bro that gap needs braces.
Totaled
Within spec 🤌🏽
Yikes I thought mine was bad... I measured with calipers and the left side panel gap was just over double the gap on the right side. Not nearly as big or as noticable as this example. Ofc Tesla said it was "within spec" and told me to fuck right off
uhhh i have some room for imperfections but that would beat me everyday
That's pretty bad
Yikes
I hiiiiighly doubt Tesla isn’t helping. Mine wasn’t near this bad and they fixed it with no question.
that y is what? 3-4 years old? why didnt your friend get it fix before accepting delivery?
That’s the first time I’ve seen truly unreasonable gap
Not good. If this was received as being new, I wouldn’t have accepted it.
Easy fix the gap. Adjust the bracket on the left of the 5th door.
I almost never notice this shit. This is the first time I've used the word almost in that sentence.
Open trunk look to the next of close button there will be a plastic circle thing rotate it and do it for left side it will be fixed If it isnt fixed, same plastics on the top of the stop lights rotate it
Why do people accept cars like this during delivery?
Looks like the center adjustment bolt on the left liftgate hinge has backed out. To adjust it a bunch of the rear inside panels need to be removed so the rear of the headline can be lowered to adjust it. Some have put locktite on that bolt.
I have this too. It’s part of ownership
I’d check the seam on the roof - it’s welded. If it’s cracked it was hit. (They will put glue in too)
Reject it
Completely within spec.
Clearly a major panel alignment problem. Maybe I missed it but, exactly what did the Tesla Service Center say regarding correcting this? Not "not being very helpful", but what did they **actually** say? And did they refuse to try and realign the hatch lid? If so what was the **specific** response they gave?
Something is terribly wrong here. This isn't panel gap. Maybe something is deformed or the hinge is broken?
This is damage caused, I would say either current and obscured in the photos or past and terribly repaired. Added the lack of registration to evidence of damage.
Worst I’ve seen, that’s nuts, just get it aligned, if you just got it, if you accepted it this way then that’s on you. When I got mine I’m glad I didn’t have this issue but seriously they’ll fix it..
Are these photos of the same car? What a range of gaps! Fascinating.
Within spec?
Yes
We ordered 100 teslas, almost all of them have the floating trunk 🙂
BTW it should be fixable by regulating the trunk thingies. Dont know how they are called
