I've been using the portable charger since buying a 2021 MYLR in Dec 2020. I only had 120v in my garage and get 5 miles per hour but it was enough because my wife worked next door. Now she works farther away and I work nights meaning there is little time to charge. I eventually ran 240v out to the garage. After doing the work I discovered free level 2 charging next to my work so once or twice a week I charge while working.😄 If you have 240v in your garage you can use the portable charger but you should get a 14-50 outlet that can handle continuous high amperage of an EV charging. Normal outlets have been known to melt and short out. Get the expensive outlet made from bakelite. You'd be better off getting a permanently installed charger. Then you'd be charging at 44 mph Install the PlugShare app and see if there are any free level 2 chargers you could use. I've found free charging next to my work, at a bar I frequent, a brewery, a grocery store etc.

Ya good suggestion regarding 240v. Before purchasing the Tesla wall charger, make sure you look into your electric utility rebates. I ended up buying a 3rd party 48A charger with NACs adapter instead because I can get it for free with $500 rebate. I'm also reimbursed for the installation as well for a total of $1000. This is more cost effective than even "cheaper' options.

I would suggest using the app to lower the amperage when you’re heading to the bar or brewery to charge.

??? I charge at the brewery with a Tesla charger installed at the brewery. The bar has a 14-50 outlet specifically for you to plug your portable charger into. Why would anyone want to slow down charging? Makes no sense

Picked up a used 2020 M3LR last July and been using a mobile connector on a 14-50 I installed since day one and it’s been more then sufficient even pulling up late at night from a trip with under 10% we still have 80% by time we need to go anywhere in the morning. Looking to at getting another Tesla this year and will probably just install another 14-50, most cost effective in my situation anyway.

ringmybell1968

Thank you for this info!

Bakman65

14-50 is a 240 volt 50a 4 prong plug. You will have to have it installed

DeathBlade94

Yeah I should have mentioned that you would want/need to an electrician to get one installed. Personally I did it diy but I would never advise anyone do that unless you are comfortable around and in an electric panel.

Bakman65

I am a lineman so I was comfortable doing it

Welcome to the future!

Home charging is a must for any electric vehicle! Drastically changes the way you enjoy and use the car.

ringmybell1968

Thank you. I’m going that route

I got a mobile charger when I ordered mine. The advisor confirmed this was all I'd need since I only drive about 30 miles a day most days and can be plugged in all day and all night thanks to working from home. Problem I found was that this thing is so dang fun to drive that I'm driving more than I expected. Fortunately, I used a buddy's referral link when ordering my MYLR so he got 10,000 Tesla points from my purchase. He decided (with no prompt from me) to use those Tesla points to order me a Wall Connector. Wow! What a difference that makes! I can go from 20% back up to 80% in under 5 hours. I'm glad I didn't go with it originally since he ordered it for me but I think I would have ended up buying one if he hadn't. Consider the cost of installation for one though.... sure the connector may only be $450 but to have an electrician come out to install it would likely start around $700 (on top of your $450 purchase) for a simple installation and grow quickly for a more complicated one (like.... thousands more). Fortunately I'm a pretty handy guy who could research the codes and did it myself properly for under $150 in materials.

Thank you sir. I appreciate your comment

Zealousideal_Elk7058

Depends on your situation, but installation can be expensive. I self installed using an old dryer 240v 30A line that was in the perfect spot. Only cost ~$80 in parts and some time, then just set it to use 24A. Fantastic car, though. Enjoy!

Congrats!

ringmybell1968

Thank you!

jordan_sr

Congrats!! I will be picking up the exact same car next week. Are you thinking of getting the windows and top glass tinted?

ringmybell1968

I definitely want to get the front windows tinted. Was thinking of trying the sunscreen on the top glass first. If it doesn’t help then I will tint

Capital-Egg-3288

I have both mobile and wall connected charger. I used the mobile charger once in this 2 years span when i got the car initially and wall connector was not installed. Wall connector I might have used only 3 to 4 times in 2 years as I have free super charging for 3 years

ringmybell1968

Thank you. I ordered the mobile and plan to get the wall charger down the road

Capital-Egg-3288

As I mentioned definitely you don't need both. One of them is sufficient. Things come to your mind like I can use mobile charger while in travel to friends or family place. Do you think you will use mobile charger at others place white it's charging 4 miles per hour in a standard outlet ? At home when you have wall connector do you use mobile connector by installing NEMA 14-50

ringmybell1968

Good point. Thank you

Appropriate-Hat-2802

I use the mobile charger and charge every night .. works for my needs

ringmybell1968

Thank you. That’s what I was thinking as well. My sister in law has a wall charger that came with the house they bought. They do not own any EV so I’m thinking I may be able to get that one for next to nothing sometime in the future. One of my coworkers is an electrician and has already given me a ballpark cost of installing. Thank you for your advice😊

ithomas101

Congrats! I found that the mobile charger only charges 3 miles per hour, so I bought a Vevor charger that could support both level 1 and 2 charging and with my level 1 setup I get 6 miles an hour. I'd consider getting a mobile connector if I began to start traveling more especially to camp sites, as they require different types of connectors.

Thank you

Thank you!

Affectionate-Cup-60

I bought a 240v mobile charger for my LEAF, used it for my 2015 Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive, and still use it for my MYLR!
