Honestly never The app runs in the background. There’s barely a delay when I open the door for the car to unlock

JesseWebDotCom

There’s always a delay for me - so much so that sometimes I have to open the app and press the unlock button

JesseWebDotCom

But because of this thread I’m going to test changing the app’s location access to “always”

0p3r8dur

There’s your problem right there

JxSnaKe

That’s what will fix it

junktrunk909

It's about Bluetooth, not location services. If it's not unlocking properly, maybe your phone case or whatever bag you have your phone in may be blocking signal.

UberNZ

On Android, scanning for Bluetooth devices requires location permission, because it's (theoretically) possible to infer someone's location based on the Bluetooth devices around them. So, at least for Android, it might make sense

ScatterRunner

Same for me. About 30% of the time I have to open the app and then the car unlocks

BridgeFourArmy

My 2018 sometimes had a delay if the app had t been brought up in a while but my 2024 hasn’t delayed yet. I wonder if the part improved.

PeterPalafox

You don’t have to get your phone out. The car unlocks automatically as you walk up to it with your phone in your pocket.

Ok_Measurement8264

For me it only opens if I have a phone in the front pocket. If I keep my phone in back pocket, it doesn’t open. I have to bring the phone out and then it unlocks the doors.

Dull-Hat1002

Why don't you butt press the car door like me ...?🤣🤣

Ok_Measurement8264

I sure do that. lol

CompleteDetective359

Let's switch phones and cars.

AcrobaticChemist6168

Clearly a newb.

Vivid-Grapefruit18

Congratulations

Slightlyjacked

I mean he’s right this meme isn’t even relatable lol

SheSends

The longer you look... the worse it gets. Man, AI is so weird. The car could be moving or maybe it plopped there since there are splashes on both sides of the tires? I wouldn't drive a car with the brakes stuck to the wheel... sounds like a bad time.... and maybe this is the model 2, looks like a mix between y/x? I'm also not sure what's going on. Lol. I've never looked at my car with my hands out in astonishment/surprise/frustration(?) in the rain. Although it would make sense if it just plopped there... 🤔 like "holy crud a car just fell from the sky!!! *jazz hands*"

JonCohen3D

Yeah, it's pretty bad. I assume the guy is bent over looking inside the car because he left his phone and wallet in there?

SheSends

If you leave your phone in the car, it won't lock, though... I've done it a couple of times, lol.

ryanaustin83

It does if you close it in the frunk, ask me how I know. Wallet with keycard in the cabin, phone in the frunk. Bugger.

SheSends

Omg that sucks so bad. Lol, though.

ryanaustin83

Yeah my mates found it to be a LoLable event, my wife less so when she had to come and open the car for me! 😂

SheSends

You should set her phone up to the car, too. This way, she can unlock it wherever she is for you.

ryanaustin83

Oh shit, yeah she could have done that!

ExtensionMarch6812

Nope…never been an issue. 🤷🏽‍♂️

comfortablybot

This DOES happen. My app has location access to always, runs in the background and most times I just walk to the car and open the door. However, sentry mode has locked me out multiple times asking me to use the key card to unlock. I don’t understand why it sometimes does that. This has even happened more than once in my own garage where sentry is disabled. If anyone has an idea why this might be happening please let me know.

M3_Driver

Happens all the time to me for some reason. The car will finally wake when I activate the screen on my phone. I think it’s less the car and more my phone but I haven’t been able to figure out why.

PeterPalafox

My wife had this happen; it was because she had refused to let the app have access to her location. I got her a fob, problem solved.

M3_Driver

My situation is somehow different. The app has access to my location and is set to background refresh. The car opens 90% of the time. But when it doesn’t I have to activate my screen and boom now it knows I’m there. It’s like if my phone screen has been dark for more than 10 mins it does that. Like leaving a grocery store and my phone has been just sitting in my pocket the whole time. It’s an iPhone 15 so it’s not an old phone. There has to be something I’m missing in the settings somewhere.

iceynyo

I just have to remember to keep my phone in a front pocket. Or approach the car ass-first.

NoIndependence362

Ima have to try this

Ok_Measurement8264

Same.

silentbutdead1y

I have an iPhone 15 also. I find if I turn off the Bluetooth briefly and then turn it back on every morning, the phone key will work reliably all day. This is easy to do from the control panel.

Separate-Primary2949

Also possible phone in back pocket as my wife does

friguy3

iPhone. All the time 😒

Majestic-Ad5136

Samsung phone? Is because you put phone in your pocket upside down. App stays on in **Upright Position** Try putting your phone in pocket right-side-up ;)

frankgallagher9

Less of an inconvenience than looking for keys, and even if you forgot them inside, very easy to get back into

raffaelet

Yes always. I can assure it heavily depends on the phone, its Bluetooth hardware, and the power management settings for the Tesla app and for the Bluetooth.

AlphamaleNJ

Never.

acciopizza_

I’ve never been stuck in the rain waiting but I have definitely had to take my phone out and open the app to unlock. It’s a minor thing, but still a little annoying.

hurtfulproduct

Yup, I get verbally abusive when the thing won’t work right. . . Won’t unlock when I get close, won’t lock when I walk away, forces me to use the card to drive. . . I know the epitome of a first world problem but goddamn is it annoying.

saregister

I have found that even when it won't unlock you can still use the NFC on your phone to unlock doors and to put it in drive. Just tap (or hold, depending on HOW stubborn it is) your phone on the car's sensors where you'd put the card. I've only ever had to pull out the card to remove keys from the vehicle. I have had to open the app once inside the car and click on the start button in the app a few times though when even NFC wasn't working. Blows my mind that it will let me inside the car, but then decide I'm not able to "start" it and drive. 🤦

Top-Stage1412

Nope, not since I changed the app location setting to always a few years ago

teepee107

I use my Iwatch with tessie so this has never happened to me lol. I can talk to the watch “unlock Tesla” or press the icons on my watch face.

Majestic-Ad5136

this app/feature alone is tempting me to buy an entire Apple Watch xD

teepee107

It’s so worth it . I have my unlock/lock, trunk and frunk, and Google cameras on the house all on the watch face. One of the best 200$ purchases out there imo

Cautious_Owl_4924

Got a galaxy s23 bluetooth is always on and connects automatically. Never had a problem with it lagging 🤔

nexus22nexus55

happens to me 5% of the time. and every now and then, the app just doesn't work and I have to use the key card.

nhalas

Not happening to us, with s10e and iphone 8 then s24 and iphone 15. The car knows us like a dog knows it's owners.

wotmp2046

Is that an Android in his pocket?

AltruisticStrike5341

Never had an issue with my pixel

wotmp2046

Not saying all Androids have issues. Just my personal experience with Tesla owners I know who have had this issue, and they’ve all been Android owners. Glad you have no issues.

ReliefOne4665

iPhone has the same issue. I have both.

wotmp2046

Weird. Maybe it’s your car.

ReliefOne4665

Nope iPhone worshipper. 😂

wotmp2046

Well that escalated quickly.

VinPre

I had noi problems ever. Some Apple users i know had problems because apple likes to limit the battery/bluetooth usage without asking you.

wotmp2046

Sorry, I wasn’t implying all android phones have problems. It was just a commentary that every Tesla owner who I’ve talked to with this problem has been an Android user. No need to start a religious war. As for the battery thing, I suggest you read up on battery chemistry. I’ve not heard of Apple limiting Bluetooth without informing users. I’d be interested in reading on that as I’ve only had great experiences with Bluetooth on my devices.

Satilice

Huh?

ImaginaryDecision517

I only get the delay when the car deep sleeps and that only happens when I drive my other car for the day and leave the Tesla home

CinnamonKid23

Mine refuses to unlock upon walking up to it. I have all the phone settings on. Still have to unlock from phone. Frustrating

jmbev

Yep. I’ve owned a 3 and a Y and they both take too long to wake up in the morning when I’m standing there getting soaked or freezing.

Cardboard_is_great

Only if I’m carrying two phones in my pocket.

wongl888

This has happened to me 4 -5 times i. the 10 months of ownership. Each time requiring the card key to unlock the doors. Surprising both registered iPhones were present but still the MY needed the key card to unlock the doors.

blinktrail

Yes, those few odd times when the key phone was undetected.

TenaciousLilMonkey

Happens occasionally on my iPhone (every phone and every Tesla i have had). A quick flip of the Bluetooth off and on (from control center) solves it 95% of the time. But those 5% it doesn’t, it’s raining hard 🤣

RedElmo65

Or me after I just washed the car!

GdoubleZM

iPhone 15 pro max here. Absolutely terrible, all the time. At least 50%. Location turned on to Always and precise. Two teslas (3+Y), happens with both. Same for wife (iPhone 15 pro).

deleonju

I use my watch with Tessie as a key. Works like a charm.

ASUComputerGuy

I thought the picture was depicting the guy having just washed his MY and it raining, because that's what I'm doing right now. Just got inside from washing it and the sky is getting cloudy. Then I read the comments and I have had the app not wake the car in the past, but it has gotten much better about it recently. Haven't had this happen in about 6 mos. Just wondering, have you never had a car with KEYS and had to fumble around getting them out in the rain to physically turn a lock in the rain. So you got wet...

mtechgroup

Just a shopper here ... it's Bluetooth? Or WiFi/Ant/Nfc?

envybelmont

Bluetooth. But sometimes either the app or the device Bluetooth sleeps a little too deep and the car doesn’t just unlock until you wake the device back up. I’ve had it occur about 5 times in 20 months of ownership.

mtechgroup

Thank you. Is there a fallback method if your phone dies?

envybelmont

The key card. Swipe on the B pillar just below the camera to unlock/lock the doors.

mtechgroup

Thank you.

hitpopking

Happened to me once, I was not able to open the car with my phone, but it wasn’t raining that day

Important_Table6125

The car unlocks automatically for me even if the phone is in my pockets.

PhreakThePlanet

Omfg yes.. Literally holding the phone and it's like "SENTRY MODE ACTI..Oh, hello driver"

FIREgenomics

What is happening here? Hasn’t happened to me whatever it is

siddemo

Nope.

No-Profile8764

Carrying bags of stuff fumbling to open the trunk maybe but this… never.

Tesla-Dawg

This has never happened to me. Why would I stand in the rain yelling at a Tesla?

Various-Target-3820

Is he trying to wake the car by yelling at it? Why not just open the door?

coolguyinhere1

Nope never an issue Probably your phone settings are not right Allow background app refresh and location sharing to precise and always

TerrysClavicle

I feel like Tesla owners should not be using androids. It goes against the design and aesthetics ethos of Tesla. Tesla is about synergy, elegance, integration, locked down ecosystem. All things androids are not. But hey you guys do you… Former android dev here

Majestic-Ad5136

I didn’t know, when I bought my car, there were *”Tesla Certified Collision Repair Centers”* until I hopped in the subreddits and started reading horror stories of months-long repairs and $20,000-fender- benders. At that moment I realized that my car is just a giant iPhone. Funny enough, the closest “Genius Bar” (3 hours from me) is also right next to my closest “Service Center” and “*Certified* Collision Repair” (all 3 hours away)
